Game day: Air Force

Sure, Air Force is a misnomer.

The Falcons run 85 percent of the time.

Of course, that means they also can lull defenses into packing the tackle box, opening the way for play-action passes — Karson Roberts is very good with the bait-and-switch — and the double passes.

The backs hit the dive very quick. When defenses contract, then it opens the perimeter, particularly with cut-blockers leading the way. Know how difficult it is to slow the jet sweeps? Imagine three guys heading in one direction. And remember playing Hawaiian-style football? Air Force football is three guys heading in one direction with the ball not always staying with the original ball carrier (Roberts).

Don’t forget it’s a 4:30 start today, and it’s on free live TV.

That’ll leave enough time for the Halloween parties.

It’s also storming in the valley.
What the heck, Guy Hagi, where was the warning?

Blake Decker is a pretty good QB.
(Sorry, I’m watching the UNLV-BSU game.)

Just remember the Air Force head coach is the third-highest paid federal employee.

Back in the Von Appen days the joke amongst our seasons tickets hui was that we could no longer be bothered by anything that happened on the field. This orientation was necessary to survive what we chronically witnessed on the field. My experience has been heading in that direction again with the sense of foreboding when attending Chow era games. My beloved Warriors have become a sure remedy for happiness and peace of mind…..effective almost every time with gloom sure to replace any hint of a smile.

But I still have a stubborn streak of optimism. Let’s win this one!

  11. warriorsanddolphins October 31, 2015 10:55 am

Our fearless weatherman Hagi said it was going to be a hot a muggy halloween. So much for the so called experts.

  12. NorthShoreFan October 31, 2015 11:00 am

me could be a bit nutz but me want to see what the team can do with a stable coaching staff. too many one and done coaches to have any kind of continuity. got to be able to get them kids on the same page. me remember when JJ came and installed his O. took a while before everyone learned the O. took a while before everyone learned the D. we need some stability in the coaching ranks. only “da hui” up at UH can ensure this.

  13. NorthShoreFan October 31, 2015 11:01 am

right now, not too hot but muggy…got it half right.

  14. Willie October 31, 2015 11:05 am

5th time I have watched UNLV on TV. Noted several times that both UNLV and SJSU have looked pretty decent and will not be the easy route to a win as thought of before the 2015 season began. Both teams have shown improvements as the season progressed. UNLV’s coach first time leading in college but many years as the head coach of a national HS power. Think this is pertinent that you have been there before as the captain of a ship, regardless of level. Going to be a battle in the Las Vegas dessert when the Warriors visit. At least Hawaii fans will be able to gamble, eat and enjoy the sights too.

  19. kev-1 October 31, 2015 12:14 pm

There is a reason that teams that run the triple option have a ceiling in college football. Decent offensive production to get a two score lead combined with discipline on defense will shut it down.

Triple option offenses prey on poorly coached and undisciplined teams.

Who are you going to be today, Warriors?

    Go get em!

  24. makai October 31, 2015 1:48 pm

#17 haven’t you watched any games? Chow has his hand in the play calling for sure. I’m sure he has the last say before Matthews, Woolsey and Reilly signal the play in.

  25. st. anthony trojan October 31, 2015 1:51 pm

Well willie…yea at least they scored sum points.. n was not at like the 4th quarter when it is mop up time…Boise will catch up though in the long run…

Well I know we will do better today…our ‘spirited d-fence’ will shut them down… but is the o-fence me worry about…

Wish all those going to the game in ‘sin-city’ next week…at lest come home with full pockets…like led says…’just press’…he he he

  26. Former UH Athlete October 31, 2015 2:05 pm

At this point UNLV might have something with their new HC Sanchez. Although they likely won’t make a bowl game this season, they are playing considerably better than years past.

My parents live in Las Vegas and during his first month or two on the job. They said diehard fanbase were making mention of the quality assistant coaches he was assembling. Since he was coming from the high school ranks, it is critical for Sanchez to choose his assistants wisely, and it appears he has.

Of course, this is UNLV I’m taking about and they, like UH, are financially challenged with the FB program in regards to spending on coaches and facilities. If Sanchez finally gets UNLV to a few bowl games, it’s likely he and/or his assistants will be lured away to bigger jobs.

REMEMBER ONE TIME VERY LONG AGO…

Derek Tatsuno was pitching n attendance was almost 19,000 …was a record that time for a regular season game me think…me is sure it is still record at Aloha stadium.

  31. st. anthony trojan October 31, 2015 3:27 pm

  33. Makai October 31, 2015 3:33 pm

Nobody wants to support Chow’s paycheck! Well I guess I already did by buying season tickets but will not attend I will watch from the AC. It’s hard to have fun at the games when you feel like your being punched in the stomach all the time.

  34. oneseason October 31, 2015 3:40 pm

An old cold war joke … Party leader: “Comrade, we didn’t see you at the last Party meeting.” Man: “If I had known it was the last Party meeting, I would have attended.”

  35. Markazulu October 31, 2015 3:43 pm

Wish the university really embrace the spirit of ohana. Listening to the pre game and I love hearing the idea of the alumni section.

  36. rundown808 October 31, 2015 3:43 pm

ST, Guy Hagi? Lol. If he says no rain. You expect rain. That’s ok. Rain means blessings. Brings life, growth, and renew. So, we can only hope that the Warriors bring it tonite. For the players sake. Change in inevitable. But at what cost to the players, program, and the university?
We not only are losing money but great potential prospects. How are we suppose to keep our fan base, our local athletes, and top recruits, if we can’t even sell a damn ticket to the game. Most importantly, the head coach matters. Nobody is going to want to play for a head coach with that kind of record. Let alone that kind of personality.

I hear people talk about Coach Sarks from Huskies to USC. Then got fired. Doesn’t surprise me. He is also the reason why Taz Stevenson got recruited to WA. Taz was offered a full ride by sarks. First school to give him an offer. Gave an ultimatum on a home visit. Sign now or all deals are off. Any head coach who is going to strong arm a player is one you don’t want to deal with. Remember, at the end of the day. This is a business. There are good coaches and bad coaches. They all have personalities. Some good leaders and some not. They are human. I say this because I have witnessed sarks personally coaching on the field and from the onset I didn’t like him. Found him to be rude, arrogant, and full of himself. this was before the scandal or anything I’ve heard. I didn’t know anything about him except he was the HC for WA at that time. I know this is football. The usual cursing., rough housing, in your face kind of mentality. But him. Perception is reality. It’s the intensity and disrespect and arrogance that made me quiver. This is who is coaching these young men? Not a great leader. Did not surprise me when he got fired. I think Taz made the wrong choice in schools. Wrong coach.
How do you lead a team to battle with a leader like that. Who’s going to lay down his life to play. Who’s going to give up his body to catch the ball. Who’s going to block his QB at all cost. Who’s going to give his heart n soul for the team. Takes a great coach to make it happen. We can’t chase away talent we have to embrace it. It takes a great coach to identify with that talent, embrace it, and push it to its full potential. Because you never know who might be in your presence and in your locker room. Could be the making of one of the great ones.

Agreed. 2nd TD way too easy. Warrior D dispirited from the start.

  45. Fei Jai October 31, 2015 5:09 pm

Thanks norm. Run, pass, pass, punt.

You one genius coach and motivator.

    Looking like another loooooong day.

  47. Willie October 31, 2015 5:10 pm

On the Mainland watching the game. AFA playing at a high level, hitting on all cylinders. UH defense looks lost, real lost; if the DC doesn’t do something this is going to get real ugly real fast. They look awful on Narional TV right now.

  48. z October 31, 2015 5:10 pm

    He fumbles again.

  49. heluhelu October 31, 2015 5:11 pm

Can’t win for losing. Nice throw, catch. Then fumble.

  50. Willie October 31, 2015 5:12 pm

That was not even a hard hit, just a tap from the side and #5 coughs it up, appeared real weak on his part. Don’t they have any receiver with decent hands?

  51. Inyoface October 31, 2015 5:15 pm

Pedroza holding the ball like a loaf of bread, good receiving coaching.

  52. heluhelu October 31, 2015 5:17 pm

  56. oneseason October 31, 2015 5:22 pm

  57. z October 31, 2015 5:23 pm

Receivers open. Why run? Just pass.

  58. Willie October 31, 2015 5:23 pm

As I said any receivers with decent hands? #9 running all by himself with no defender within 7 yards, ball hits him right in the middle of his two hands and he drops it. Even the announcers said this.

  59. heluhelu October 31, 2015 5:24 pm

Alright! Break, finally (punt, fumble recovery)

  60. heluhelu October 31, 2015 5:25 pm

Uh-oh. Replay shows AF return guy’s knee down before ball coughed.

  61. Willie October 31, 2015 5:26 pm

Why didn’t Chow challenge on the TD? It was not a score from what I saw. Anyone else see this, or are my eyes deceiving me?

  62. z October 31, 2015 5:27 pm

    Nope.

  63. mytake October 31, 2015 5:27 pm

UH receivers should give back their scholarships

  64. heluhelu October 31, 2015 5:28 pm

mytake October 31 2015 at 5:21 pm D is accounting for the dive, qb but, not the pitch guy.

True that. Bad reads 2nd level. Seems Falcons can turn corner at will.

Good series for Warrior D. Air Force punt.

  81. Buffoman October 31, 2015 5:49 pm

I feel for our qb. The receivers can’t catch or hold on to the ball and now the running backs can’t hold on the ball. Terrible.

Now it’s the qb throwing interceptions.

  82. 808 October 31, 2015 5:49 pm

Maybe Chow is researching for his new book he is writing:

“How to dismantle a football program in less than 5 years.”

UH again is getting embarrassed on national TV.

  83. heluhelu October 31, 2015 5:50 pm

  84. heluhelu October 31, 2015 5:50 pm

  86. Willie October 31, 2015 5:50 pm

  88. mytake October 31, 2015 5:53 pm

  92. XxFaithxX October 31, 2015 5:56 pm

Ok. Haven’t posted in forever and I have stated my support and have been trying to give Coach Chow the benefit of the doubt that is has just been bad luck or whatever for the loses.

But, after watching this game with AF so far, I can no longer support him.

I still LOVE the team and will always cheer for the players, but this coach has to be taken out of his role.

Now will the powers that be have the eggets to be proactive..I hope so.

Forfeit the season like McKinley already…

  102. heluhelu October 31, 2015 6:17 pm

UH can’t afford to buy him out. Even for his last yr. If boosters put up $ commensurate to their influence & mouths, no problem. But UH boosters are $mall time, big egos. The laugher is Chow’s mantra that he’s “not a quitter”, i.e., not gonna sacrifice a year’s salary to help the school, program, state.

  103. Buffoman October 31, 2015 6:20 pm

This looks like a beaten team. The qb is frustrated and pressing. That produces bad decisions and as we see turnovers. May be good to bring in the entire second team as the first seem to be going through the motions at this time.

Fans must be going nuts in the stands. Wow, such a bad performance by the key offensive players.

  104. mytake October 31, 2015 6:21 pm

I hate to say it but i think the fairhful have to boycott not only foing to the game but, also boycott going to the bars that bought the pay per view. And yes that includes you retirees who go to the KB bars as an excuse to see your buy me drinky girls. We have to send a message to those power people to let Chow go now.

  105. mytake October 31, 2015 6:24 pm

I pose this question to all of you faithfull and caring fans. If Chow is not a quitter, does that make him selfish?

  106. warriorfan October 31, 2015 6:25 pm

Look at the stands, looks like people are already boycotting. the crowd is pitiful and I don’t blame them, put Chow out to pasture!!!

  107. cappie the dog October 31, 2015 6:26 pm

    No more search committees.

    PLEASE!

    Give the AD full autonomy.

Sift through the applications and pick the best one.

A college football program is not the supercollider.

  108. greenthumb October 31, 2015 6:30 pm

All tricks no treats as of halftime, on the gridiron and off. Spoiling dinner with the Halloween candy … and no trickortreaters to be seen.

  109. greenthumb October 31, 2015 6:38 pm

    101, good question.

  110. Inyoface October 31, 2015 6:38 pm

Chows biggest mistake was keeping that kid as receivers coach.

  111. Hon2255 October 31, 2015 6:40 pm

Fire Chow now!! Totally embarrassing we are down 34-0 and Chiw still hasn’t changed the quarterback. Further shows the stubbornness

  112. Inyoface October 31, 2015 6:44 pm

Don Bailey wishes he stayed in Idaho State.

  113. Paper Crane October 31, 2015 6:45 pm

Norm Chow is down to his last trick or treating like again he’ll finish with an empty bag of sweets and also not enough for State of Hawaii pension;…time to punt Norm like gotta be honest and call it all pau;…anyway mahalo for trying,…next?

  114. Buffoman October 31, 2015 6:46 pm

Why do we keep Pedroza in the game? I can’t understand that. He has attitude with nothing to back it.

  115. seewhy October 31, 2015 6:46 pm

    No sense of urgency whatsoever.

  116. z October 31, 2015 6:47 pm

2 hands Pedroza. Use 2 hands.

  117. Not Sean October 31, 2015 6:58 pm

I have been a season ticket holder since the Dave Holmes era…50+ years. I don’t recall ever seeing crowds this small at Aloha Stadium…not during the Larry Price years and not even during Von Appen’s time. This is so pathetic. Over 50 years and this is the most dis-spirited I have ever seen the players and the fans in the stands. I guess it’s time…I won’t be coming to the games next year unless…

  118. Bring back JJ now October 31, 2015 7:06 pm

He needs to be fired tonight, let the players go home and then call him in and fire him!!! What other proof do you need that he is dragging this program in oblivion. Watching it here on TV, you cant see more than a few people in the stands, it is pathetic!! Waiting till the end of the year makes no sense unless you want to see this type of performance for the next month. Need JJ Now!!!

  119. mytake October 31, 2015 7:07 pm

We have hit rock bottom. Lets get another search committee made up of our finest whos who in Hawaii (no football knowledge) and pick another well connected head coach. I believe Rockne Frietas was the only football guy the last time.

  120. seewhy October 31, 2015 7:09 pm

NUFF WITH JJ ALREADY!! You delusional fans keep living in the past! More worse than Miami U fans. We need up and coming coaches. Enough with the has beens!!

  121. Moocher October 31, 2015 7:12 pm

There is huge difference between quitting and knowing when it is ok to be excused.
Mr. Chow, I think most people want you to know we excuse you, it’s ok to step down. We don’t think you are a quitter.

Like I said before, if Chow steps down people will still respect him, frankly Chow might be respected even more. However if Mr. Chow stays, he will surely depart a very hated man.

Not to mention it’s quite obvious the confidence in the new but same ol same ol AD is just about zero.

  122. Tarheel warrior October 31, 2015 7:16 pm

I’ve resisted in calling for Coach Chow’s resignation, but after this performance, this should be a done deal. He has to go!!! Now.

  123. Buffoman October 31, 2015 7:17 pm

#116 that is probably correct. I also agree, no past coaches. If there is a change start fresh.

  124. Bring back JJ now October 31, 2015 7:18 pm

This program is broken and the only one who has shown that they rebuild it without getting paid a million dollars is JJ, that is fact!!! No upcoming and coming coach is going to come here for what we can pay them. That’s the reality, keep dreaming about getting some big up coming coach, its not going to happen. Has been, really, what are you smoking, his record here speaks for itself. this shadow dressing west coast crap offense wont work here, it didn’t for Van Appen and it hasn’t under Chow.

  125. cappie the dog October 31, 2015 7:18 pm

Didn’t Jim Donovan tap Dirk Koetter to succeed Greg McMackin?

Wasn’t it Rockne Freitas who pushed for Coach Chow?

  126. Derek October 31, 2015 7:20 pm

    One word, PATHETIC.

  127. Inyoface October 31, 2015 7:21 pm

I think people will pop fireworks if Chow gets fired. I don’t think UH athletics will fire him though, they’re horrible with decision making & money budgeting.

  128. Buffoman October 31, 2015 7:23 pm

Hey, play the next home game at Ching Field. They may be able to fill the stands.

  129. Moocher October 31, 2015 7:24 pm

Rockne frets in my opinion was probably the head bozo that pushed aside JD’s plans. He basically steered UH in the mountain west and chow. He was part if not the main reason we have crap deals with the MW and sorry but a crappy coaching situation.

Get rid of freitas for putting UH in this position. Gang green, greenwood, apple…they all gone….freitas played a huge role if not the main role in getting chow perhaps thinking Chows experience and MW experience will help navigate UH in the new conference…Freitas disregarded everyone and he just wanted UH to get in the MW and threw the rest to the wind…well, we sure got a hurricane now swirling around the state and Manoa.

hey yeah i could be wrong, but thats my opinion. it is soooooo frustrating to watch this team. A lot of good and great players, but coaching that just cannot polish them up and get them in synch.

Please bring back Von Appen….yes thats how bad i think the coaching is.

  130. Iwonderwhytheyhateme October 31, 2015 7:24 pm

    Send Norm hoooome.
    Send him hoooome.
    Back to where, he beloooongs.
USC, BYU, just send Norm hoooome.
    Far from us gooooooo.

    (The new 4th quarter song)

  131. greenthumb October 31, 2015 7:24 pm

Please, Coach Chow, for the players who are leaving it all on the field … it is time to think of an orderly, dignified transition.

  132. Balko October 31, 2015 7:26 pm

It takes a special level of inept coaching to put on this kind of display.

  133. Moocher October 31, 2015 7:26 pm

    #120…..THANK YOU!!!!
    yes it was.

Like always frets will work in the shadows….only roaches and undesirables shy away and stay away from the light. You will not hear a peep from freitas

  134. Inyoface October 31, 2015 7:27 pm

    We still get chance!! LOL

  135. Old School Dave October 31, 2015 7:28 pm

Beau Baldwin – Eastern Washington, Bruce Barnhum – Portland State. Get on the phone with them, tomorrow. Ikaika in EWU’s offense will bring back the fans.

  136. Derek October 31, 2015 7:29 pm

Why is Wittek still in the game at 0-44?

  137. Moocher October 31, 2015 7:30 pm

Amazing to think Sean Shroeder has been the best QB or at least the best QB to control our offence and we have gotten worse.

But hey, I always liked never SS and respected his play 🙂

  138. greenthumb October 31, 2015 7:31 pm

Freitas announced intention to retire at end of calendar 2015.
    http://www.hawaii.edu/news/2015/08/18/uh-west-oahu-chancellor-rockne-freitas-announces-retirement/

  139. Moocher October 31, 2015 7:31 pm

can’t wait to hear the call in show after the game….the producers must be wondering what to do hehe

  140. Buffoman October 31, 2015 7:31 pm

I believe that the announcers have it correct. “The offense is inept.” For someone to s a y that is telling.

  141. Moocher October 31, 2015 7:32 pm

133…best news from UH in a while….thanks greenthumb

  142. Iwonderwhytheyhateme October 31, 2015 7:33 pm

    Derek,

The answer starts with a “C” and rhymes with Plow.

  143. greenthumb October 31, 2015 7:35 pm

Defense must be beyond gassed at this point and they are still trying. I have nothing but respect for our players. C’mon UH admin, please act like you do, too.

  144. kakaako kid October 31, 2015 7:37 pm

I am impressed at how we are able to dress up so many students to look like football players. They even have guys who look like coaches.

  145. Old School Dave October 31, 2015 7:38 pm

Players putting everything out on the field. Just don’t want any serious injuries. Radio crew said the coaches are emotionless in the booth.

  146. papayalips October 31, 2015 7:38 pm

The front porch of the University of Hawaii is an embarrassment to the State of Hawaii? Opposite outcome of President Lassner’s stated goal. Failure start at the top.

  147. greenthumb October 31, 2015 7:39 pm

Did the announcers say Hawaii would be lucky to get 40 offensive plays off?

  148. Moocher October 31, 2015 7:41 pm

frustration taking over players i guess….mr. chow we excuse you

  149. 3-Prong October 31, 2015 7:41 pm

Hard to put a silver lining on this one.

  151. Moocher October 31, 2015 7:45 pm

anyway…..being in singapore, if the AD wants to capture the asian market you won’t do it with football. top asian sports the UH offers would be soccer, volleyball, basketball, golf, swimming…those are more international and geared for the asian market. football won’t really make too much traction here.

  152. greenthumb October 31, 2015 7:45 pm

    THANK YOU, KEELAN EWALIKO!!!

  153. seewhy October 31, 2015 7:45 pm

    EWALIKO TO THE HOUSE!!!!!

  154. Trunks420 October 31, 2015 7:46 pm

    There’s our silver lining.

I give chow two more games to win if no win then he Shaw be fired on spot.

  155. Moocher October 31, 2015 7:47 pm

see what happens when you let playmakers play….

  156. westwind October 31, 2015 7:49 pm

The powers that be need to take responsibiliy for what Chow has done to Hawaii’s team. What say you people that “Chow needs to be able to recruit and put in his own people”. Some people are not meant to be a head coach. These past 4 years have only confirmed this.

  157. greenthumb October 31, 2015 7:49 pm

So this is a “reviewable play” (kick) but the “noncompetitive” situation on the point after in the AF touchdown is not reviewed?

  158. pokesquid October 31, 2015 7:52 pm

I believe Coach Jones can do it again….Hey remember, Chris Ault from Nevada came back a 2nd time after taking over the AD job at Nevada…He came back and brought Nevada and the Pistol offense to fame.

I believe Coach Jones has some new wrinkles and ideas to bring Hawaii back…This time off he took I believe helped to a clear vision of what he can do this 2nd time around.

  159. kakaako kid October 31, 2015 7:55 pm

Shame on Air Force. Up by 50 and they keep running the ball.

  160. Moocher October 31, 2015 7:55 pm

someone call CNN…..timothy mcvey blew up aloha stadium. it was an inside job using the air force.

…come on, good or bad, just a little humour at this point 🙂

  161. Balko October 31, 2015 8:00 pm

Got empty boxes? Drop them off at the coach’s offices to help with them pack their things.

  162. z October 31, 2015 8:01 pm

    Refs no like Chow.

  163. pokesquid October 31, 2015 8:02 pm

    I agree with #119

All you people wishing and hoping for someone from the mainland to come here and fix our team fast is wasting your time…No one can fix our team fast except for someone who did it before…doesn’t need the money and who also already stated that he would like to coach Hawaii one more time.

  164. kakaako kid October 31, 2015 8:02 pm

Coaches hoping we can holdAF to a FG so we can run the kickoff return again.

  165. Inyoface October 31, 2015 8:03 pm

Refs are racist against Chow cause he’s Asian.

  166. oneseason October 31, 2015 8:03 pm

Chow supporters should sponsor each UH punt for $500.

  167. z October 31, 2015 8:07 pm

    Put in Ewaliko.

  168. Dwayne October 31, 2015 8:10 pm

Hire Miano & Rolovich and make them co-head coaches. Pay them $200,000 each. Hire assistants who are local and live here. Pay them $50,000. Don’t need no mainland coaches who no can pronoun local players names.

  169. pokesquid October 31, 2015 8:12 pm

This is another reason WHY Chow needs to go….Why put in Woosley?….We all seen him play and WE all know he is NOT the answer…..Why not give Reilly a chance?…..Damn, what did you give him a scholarship to make him sit on the sidelines….I know Zwahlen is going to be redshirted…..and you don’t want to waste that year….But C’mon…..Give Reilly a chance….What do you have to lose?

  170. kakaako kid October 31, 2015 8:12 pm

    Did we make the spread?

  171. 808 October 31, 2015 8:13 pm

If Freitas was behind the decision to hire Chow, his retirement announcement is welcome news.

Who really knows the intricacies behind the decision making at UH. In the end they have a ready made fall guy in the AD.

I’m sure behind the scene, there is another Freitas in the mix looking to push his weight around.

UH warrior football got embarrassed on national TV again!

  172. Inyoface October 31, 2015 8:13 pm

Put us out of our misery already.

  173. z October 31, 2015 8:20 pm

I remember how when we weren’t that good teams would come here to play us but when JJ came they avoided us. Maybe now is the time to fill out the schedule. Call Texas.

  174. Maddog50 October 31, 2015 8:23 pm

Rockbottom. No matter what happens after this it can go no lower-literally sick

  175. Sapper October 31, 2015 8:27 pm

Aloha Stadium was a Haunted house tonight. The ghost and ghouls came dressed as the Rainbow Warrior football team. The scariest was the had a ghost that look just like Norm Chow. Trick o Treat.

  176. azwarrior22 October 31, 2015 8:27 pm

The only good that can come out of this is if Chow is fired.

  177. greenthumb October 31, 2015 8:31 pm

Game attendance 15,118 according to game recap on SA breaking news. Maybe that will get someone’s attention.

  178. pokesquid October 31, 2015 8:31 pm

Sorry to say this…but it seems like the only thing to do now is hope our beloved Warriors lose the rest of the games so we can be sure that Chow will not be retained….I would hate to see him get extended because he won some of the meaningless remaining games.

  179. z October 31, 2015 8:32 pm

Even Bobby Curren gave team F for tonight.

  180. Old School Dave October 31, 2015 8:32 pm

Need a successful head coach. Someone from the FCS level would be up to the challenge. Remember Dino Babers? Eastern Illinois, to Bowling Green, and likely to the SEC or Big -12 next season. Successful local high school coaches are known here, but not on the mainland. Just my 1 cent.

  181. azwarrior22 October 31, 2015 8:34 pm

How about UH buy back my tickets to UNLV game cuz I don’t want to go, if Chow is still in charge?

  182. st. anthony trojan October 31, 2015 8:35 pm

In all of this… me truly feel sorry for all the bad vibes n comments against this ‘so called’ Chow team….for the parents …relatives…n friends… must be very horrible to see n hear…

Keelan Ewaliko…Baldwin High School led the track team to 2…count that 2 state championships…for a neighbor isle school Even take one is AMAZING…he won the 100 n 220 races n anchored the team 4 x 100 relay…(the fastest man in HS FOR 2 YEARS)The story goes….after that performance…chow calls his mom n says…”I want him”…then does it again second year….They won the MIL football also… n beat Farrington…with him at QB…he is in his 2nd year now… n from a coach” we don’t know where to play him”
RAN BACK ONE BEFORE THIS GAME WAS CALLED BACK CUZ OF PENALTY….n coach criticize him for running other one back…n he fumbled i think.. not sure.. but here is a warrior…trying to make sumthing happen.. n gets thrown under the bus…by his coach…

Parents …relatives.. n friends…OF THE TEAM must hurt more then us.. mere fans…they deserve better…

Mr. CHOW….RETIRE NOW..N ASK UH TO PAY YOU UR NEXT YEARS MONEY OVER 5 YEARLY INSTALLMENTS WITH NO INTEREST…IF HAWAII MEANS NE THING TO YOU…

  183. st. anthony trojan October 31, 2015 8:38 pm

My comments have been bad at times also… me is not ABOVE THE REST…SORRY 4-GOT TO SAY THAT…

  184. azwarrior22 October 31, 2015 8:39 pm

Maitlin – listen to the fans or should I say ‘no fans’ at Aloha. It’s time to make a coaching change. Fire Chow now so hope can be restored for the remainder of the season.

  185. kaleiguy October 31, 2015 8:39 pm

    It’s time for a change…..NOW!!

  186. MattO October 31, 2015 8:40 pm

Coach Chow, please do the the honorable thing and step down. No shame. You tried your best. You had limited resources and tough schedule. Taking this team, so far away from any other school in the country is always a daunting and difficult task.

But tonight I saw something I’ve never seen before in all my years watching UH football — the players quit mid-game.

No effort. No pride. No care. And consequently, no fans.

For the good of the school, the team, the boys, the fans and the state, please step down. We genuinely appreciate your efforts. It was nice to have a head coach from Hawaii again, and we’re glad you were able to come home.

But now it’s time to let someone else lead this team. Help the boys out, and let the school start that process sooner rather than later. Mahalo.

  187. 808 October 31, 2015 8:40 pm

You would think UH football moved from the WAC to the Pac 12 conference with all the L’s in the past 4 years.

They went from the WAC to the MWC. All of the teams in the MWC were former WAC members.

Let’s hope Chow time is over.

  188. Da Gr8 808 October 31, 2015 8:40 pm

Please end all of our suffering. Do the right thing and make the announcement on Monday.

  189. H-Man October 31, 2015 8:41 pm

I can’t wait to see whether Matlin does anything this coming week. This loss has pushed the situation to critical mass where something has to be done. Matlin has to say something. If he doesn’t, then maybe he should be pushed out the door along with Chow.

  190. st. anthony trojan October 31, 2015 8:47 pm

KAKAAKO KID… ME LIKE UR HUMOR…GOOD ONE… HE HE HE

We will beat the spread next week…you watch…n wait he he he

  191. azwarrior22 October 31, 2015 8:49 pm

The breaking news on the loss says that…

Chow will learn his fate from UH athletic director Dave Matlin as early as Sunday. Considering this was the most lopsided loss for UH at Aloha Stadium in school history, no one should be surprised if it is Chow’s last game.

    Let’s certainly hope so…

  192. seewhy October 31, 2015 8:56 pm

    RE: st. anthony trojan #174

I still remember when the Bows traveled to Maui for their spring game and Chow invited Ewaliko and Jordan Hoem (then Oregon commitment but retired from football senior year) to watch them play. Then afterwards gathered the whole team and said Ewaliko and Hoem are the future. Well… so much for that.

  193. Da Gr8 808 October 31, 2015 8:58 pm

Please end of suffering now. Do the right thing and make the announcement on Monday.

  194. st. anthony trojan October 31, 2015 9:00 pm

Thanks 4 that azwarrior.. n the person responsible for the 6 points…well we not know where 2 use him.. throw him under the bus.. just say…he can’t remember plays…n don’t know the nuances of his position… n yet he was a QB for a championship team ‘Baldwin’ from Maui…

  195. heluhelu October 31, 2015 9:07 pm

Matlin’s full plate lunch now overflowing with bad mac salad.

Wherever he is, Matlin needs to revise his action plan for UH football posthaste. What do recruiting targets who saw tonite’s nationally televised game think of Hawaii now? Maybe some think, “That’s on them, not on me. I’ll help Hawaii turn this around.” If so, good. Others? 57-7 thrashing in year 4 of coach’s contract featuring 10-36 record does NOT promise continuity. THAT, and a whole lot more, should bring Matlin home asap. Matlin knew all about the football “problem” before he took the job.

*IF* Matlin was the right man for the job, then Matlin also knew waiting out Chow’s contract would cost UH MORE money in the long run based on the damage to recruiting, season ticket sales AND pay-per-view rev. You’d hope he developed options to close the Chow chapter without another upper-campus buyout. You’d hope he could scrounge $550k from UH boosters, future sponsors, marketing opportunities — somewhere, anywhere — to stem the hemorrhage of optimism and good will putting UH football in cardiac arrest.

Eliminate UH football? Fine. If you do that, might as well start sooner than later. Why incur millions more in red ink on another brand-destructive football season just to outwait Chow’s contract? Else, if you DO decide football is worth saving, no better time than NOW to cut your losses on Chow, to give recruits, ticket-holders and tv partners ANY reason to stick around — before it’s too late.

  196. not Sean October 31, 2015 9:08 pm

You know when you’ve hit the rock bottom of pathetic-ness when mediocrity would be a HUGE improvement. What a sad state we’re in. I’m going to be in Vegas next week and was planning to go to the game Saturday. I’m thinking the 120 bucks for a pair of tickets would be better spent in the casino. Actually get more chance win there.

  197. heluhelu October 31, 2015 9:10 pm

    Scuse. 58-7.

  198. hitman October 31, 2015 9:45 pm

games are getting hard to watch !! feel for the kids trying there best out there !! but you could see it on the side lines !! coach need to try other players at qb !! not saying max is bad !! but sometime a move can get a team going !! but max shouls been on the side lines for the 2nd half !! score was way out of hand aready !! why no bo at qb yet ? that my question !! i could see saving him last year !! but this year come on !! been blow out way to much aready !! for him not to play !!
next week start like a new season time to play some youg one and see what we got for next year !!

  199. A-House October 31, 2015 9:46 pm

we left just before half-time and cannot believe AF coaching staff called a time out with 17 seconds left before half and leading 34 – 0; IMHO, this is shameful!!!!!!!!

philosophically speaking: offense terrible{ play calling; dropped passes; missing blocking assignments; passes that are way-off target, etc }, but it’s the defense losing the game as they cannot stop most of the offense.

with UH spread DLine, AF guards were shooting the gap to clobber the ILBers on most plays rendering them ineffective

is a 3 down linemen the best way to defend the triple option? keeping the ILB nearly 5 yards back the best strategy to stop running plays? like SDST, the sweeps were killing the OLB who did not have the speed to stop the RB; or, was it “slow reaction” to counter the RB speed?

If Chow does not step down, will Matlin relieve him of coaching the team making Chow an “also ran”? let him occupy the office – they did for Ben Jay!

say, if UH cancels the last 4 games, how much do they have to pay? or, because it’s a conference game it’s ZERO? lets see, $175,000 x 3 = $525,000 nearly enough $$$ to buy out Chow

for the fans, we just suck wind or you want to watch the slaughter at Aloha Stadium? is it worth us doing this???

  200. Darren October 31, 2015 9:50 pm

No matter how frustrating these games have become watching, I still want to see the boys succeed every week. Go Warriors!!

I think maybe all us fans that want change never mind bitching against and bashing Chow. I think maybe we just simply say thank you for trying your best Coach Chow. Thank you for keeping the kids in school and doing well and giving them opportunities and memories. The only thing you didn’t give the kids were wins on the field, but your leadership and experiences will give them wins in life…

I think in the end this is something Chow and all of us can feel good about as we must now take a step in a new direction with a new mix of people to continue giving the kids new experiences and life lessons…and yes, a few wins too.

  202. Come on, man! October 31, 2015 10:04 pm

Yes. Because apparently Norm Chow was hired to give college athletes “positive experiences.” He’s a $500k+/year life coach. Thank you, uncle norm. You may be presiding over the collapse of the UH football program as we know it, but hey, at least the college students are attending class.

They couldn’t do that without you.

  203. Dano October 31, 2015 10:07 pm

it was nice to see alot of air force fans in the stands tonight. they bring a classy feel along with their team, the same way you would find when the likes of Alabama, Oregon St., USC would bring to Aloha Stadium. It would be great to schedule a service academy every year to play here.

  204. kev-1 October 31, 2015 10:08 pm

Hands down one of the most pathetic performances I have ever seen. When they fire Chow, they should send those two sorry a$$ coordinators with him.

Players don’t get off easy this week either. They should be ashamed of the performance they put on tonight. Really pathetic.

  205. JustAsking October 31, 2015 10:09 pm

Thanks, Coach Chow. You had a great resume and created much hope when you arrived. Perhaps it was just too late in your career? So many little mistakes added up to bigger failures. not everyone is meant to be the head coach.

  206. kev-1 October 31, 2015 10:10 pm

This team just got embarrassed by a service academy team. That is sad. It’s one thing to lose, but to get worked like that? WEAK.

  207. kev-1 October 31, 2015 10:12 pm

Pfff … I’ll let Chow off the hook this time. He got hung out to dry by a defense that couldn’t stop anything and an offense that has no clue how to score points.

  208. Arcumfortis October 31, 2015 10:18 pm

Well at least some excitement has been generated on this board tonight.

  209. ai-eee-s00s October 31, 2015 10:20 pm

    wow laulau

  210. Arcumfortis October 31, 2015 10:20 pm

Worst game I can remember watching at Aloha Stadium in a long time. Stadium mostly empty and fans clearing out by the third quarter. Very sad.

  211. hitman October 31, 2015 10:20 pm

changes need to made we all know that !! time to see where we stand and what we need and have for next year !! and to all the player on the team thank you for playing your heart out every week !!keep your head up because only going to get better !! some time a coach can only take you so far even when he try’s his best !! some time we get use to someone we one thing that he is or was the answer ! then some times change can might be what we need all along just to get you over that hump !!
all i know i would love to all uh play maker on the field at one time !! a 5 wide out set would be nice !!

  212. ai-eee-s00s October 31, 2015 10:21 pm

    we get em, next week

  213. kev-1 October 31, 2015 10:27 pm

At least the game didn’t interfere with me taking my kids trick or treating. I was glad to leave the house even though UH wasn’t pau getting lickens.

Yes Warriors, you got dirty lickens by Air Force. Air Force! !!!!

  214. cocobean October 31, 2015 10:47 pm

Football is a game of emotions. We had none. We were flatter than………

The 15k hard core that showed up the majority I suspect were a lot like me, old enough to qualify for medicare benefits. To old and too Asian to generate much crowd noise to create a home field advantage and too polite to voice any displeasure – no audible moaning and groaning. We gave the coaching staff a pass. We didn’t pump up the team.

  215. We Tried October 31, 2015 11:06 pm

We sure gave Chow a chance. For sure, it can’t be put all on Chow because there are many underlying problems that will still be there after Chow, but it’s time to move on. Chow can’t do it. Next up.

People who hate Chow, don’t think of this as a win. We all lose. Even you. Same problems exist. Even if a new, exciting, capable young coach is hired and he wins, he will be gone for a bigger program and for more money soon enough. Then we are back to square one. We need to fix the underlying problems.

UH Football Facilities need major upgrades. They need a legit practice facility where students don’t complain about the noise. Practicing in the sun is no benefit for the UH Athletes. It makes them tired. Drained. Also it keeps prying eyes out. UH has space issues, but time to suck it up or shut up. Some things need to be moved to make room for proper football facilities. Looking at UH Athletics area, they can fit a football facility in there, but some things need to be moved.

Stadium Authority / UH Athletic Finances / Legislature

Better College Game Day Experience (didn’t UH Band learn anything at the Sugar Bowl?)

P.S. To the next coach: recruit more team speed please

And quick-to-forget fans, please stop with the JJ nonsense. He left UH high and dry and even left when he knew the talent was gone and little in the pipeline. He didn’t do much at SMU while being smack dab in the middle of one of the main football recruiting markets in the nation. Texas. SMU has money too. Not like UH. So where was the magic? NO COACH WILL SAVE HAWAII FOOTBALL…unless all the underlying problems are fixed first. Remember JJ complained about the problems at UH? Well, what has changed since then? Besides that. JJ worked his magic in the WAC and a whole different time. The BCS (Power Conferences) has super evolved since then. The talent pool is even thinner because of it for the mid-majors. Our local talent leaves for the Pac-12. They have the money. The name. The exposure. Even shitty Oregon State and Washington State have tremendous facilities (compared to UH) because of all the money they got from the BCS games.

Also we need a better college game day experience. The Band and Dancers have to change their routines. Being gone for an entire quarter is unacceptable. Forget the dancing during the games. Just cheer for the team. Lead the crowd in cheers. The whole game atmosphere needs to be changed. I watch mainland games and it makes me so jealous how awesome their games/band/fan experience is. Watching Georgia at the Sugar Bowl was awesome. Not the football team. The band, the crowd, the cheers, the whole experience of real college football.

Right now, I feel bummed for the student athletes who train hard everyday. They deserve better from the people who can fix things. Will those people finally put away their egos? Get off their butts and actually fix things? New coach doesn’t fix the underlying problems. It only masks the real issues for a short while.

Right now, these are the coaches that will apply for the UH position.
    -High School Head Coach
    -Division II (FCS) Head Coach
    -Division I (FBS) Assistant Coach
-Old Coach that wants to make $500k a year for retirement
So let’s not expect miracles. If a young, up-and-coming awesome coach gets hired, he will be gone in a few years. The program needs to be upgraded in a major way so that UH is a better destination for good coaches and not a stepping stone. (I’m not even sure this is even possible in this day and age of limited hardcore football fans.)

At least my Lakers still suck. I watch their games and think Byron Scott is just like Chow, but even worse. He has the #1 NBA organization at his disposal and the product still sucks. All the money. Prestige. Legacy. And he puts a crap product on the court. Chow has many disadvantages working against him Byron Scott doesn’t have so Chow isn’t as bad. Not even close. Is that even a consolation? LOL

    Go Lakers!

    Go Bows!
(but you people who can fix it, please get off your butts and fix it!)

    Ugg.

    Tomorrow is a new day.

  216. Bryson October 31, 2015 11:15 pm

There was no way the actual attendance was 15K…

  217. Markazulu October 31, 2015 11:15 pm

I honestly believed chow should finish this seaSon BUT after this performance chow should be let go immediately.

  218. oneseason October 31, 2015 11:21 pm

We were ready for a loss, but to see AF dial back their game so they wouldn’t run up the score was sad. Had Coach Chow not consistently brought up the mistakes of his players to avoid blame, I would feel sorry for him. As it is, I hope AD Marlin will act soon so that the next home game won’t see even worse attendance.

  219. Hodad October 31, 2015 11:28 pm

This was a Pathetic showing by any count. The worst I say was Oct 29,2004 in Boise. JJ just stared at his hands. Game was over in first five minutes. Final BSU 69 Hawaii 3.

  220. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 31, 2015 11:39 pm

    oneseason,

I’m so punch drunk I lmao over your typo. AD Marlin lololol.

  221. Moocher November 1, 2015 12:49 am

when you watch old UH games on you tube you can really see how bad things have gotten with the fan base of today. I think the talent is there, but it seems the coaching just cannot get everyone on the same page with the same attitudes and pushing each other to play at another level. its not a knock on the kids…its telling of a leadership/management style. You can like your boss, but depending on how he leads or manages, directly relates to your following his directions and his motivating you to want to slack off, do your job, or do more than your job required.

this is the way i look at chow and his team…basically every team in his tenure. they will give their all, but if you are not leading or managing them right, you will not get all to give above their all or push each other to a higher level.

anyways, my opinion. I really do wish chow the best and respect what he has done in his lifetime.

  222. oneseason November 1, 2015 1:14 am

iwonderwhytheyhateme … poor execution on my part 🙂

  223. Shoko November 1, 2015 4:39 am

Chow saying that he’s not worried about his job is another way of saying he doesn’t care about the present state of affairs.

This should be an easy decision for any athletic director. I see no reason not to make an announcement today. If there isn’t one, I would say the UH failed in selecting a competent athletic director.

  224. warrior fan November 1, 2015 4:43 am

Well I guess this should be Chow’s last game. He gave it his all, but it just didn’t work out. Please people stop with mentioning JJ. We need someone else that can revive this program. I believe we do have enough talent on our team, we just need a good coach to put it all together for us. I’ll still support our team no matter what.. I feel for the players though who play their hearts out every game. But I think last night is probably the only exception.. I think the players have gave up on the coaches. Question Is who is out there, that would want to take over this program??

  225. Tempmanoa November 1, 2015 5:11 am

From the media it seems like Chow will be fired today with an announcement this week, with statements like Chow has probably “coached his last game for Hawaii”. Seems like the logical thing to do even if a little late.

  226. Maddog50 November 1, 2015 5:22 am

Watching every phase of this game it was a true team debacle. From OL to DL to LB to RB to QB to Rec. every player and every position coach had there hand in this.
QB is the most important position and is supposed to make things happen. When they are bad things that should be it. Defenders tackle and receivers receive-heard this recently either learn humility or life will teach it to you-life is a painful teacher. History says there will be a coaching change. Please take into account number one is ability to recruit-number two here is to engage the public and generate excitement and support. The head coach does not have to do all that but has to bring in people who can. The only people who can be considered are those that actually apply. Outside of June Jones I do not see a candidate who is resident that can fill that description. Regardless of your feelings for him or about him he does have the resume along with blemishes. Forget a lot of those mentioned here because unless something changes the money will not be offered. When around 60 to 70. Percent of your annual budget of 1.5 billion dollars goes to salaries don’t look for the academics to share-that’s their money!

  227. Akamai Okole November 1, 2015 5:31 am

    Great Morning All!

I see no reason to believe that the sun will not be rising again shortly.

Nor do I see any reason to believe that things will not be changing very shortly for UH football.

I will continue to support the football program BUT ….

  228. Maddog50 November 1, 2015 5:44 am

#227 you are right after chilly temps and 24 hrs of rain in Chicago bright sunshine and a 3 day run of 70 plus degrees. Not your weather but for here it’s great in November!!!!
Interesting words used by KT in this mornings paper. That kid is one of the few bright spots this season. We need more like him to restore the program. I hope help is on the way cause this is. Awfully painful for fans players and the families of those kids. Rise up baby!!!!

  229. Old School Dave November 1, 2015 5:46 am

Tom Mason likely to become an “interim head coach” for the 3rd time in his career? Got a feeling an announcement is coming soon. No reason to celebrate as someone needs to pull the team together. Players fighting on the sidelines is not a good sight or sign. Still 4 more games to play. Players who have quit or caused trouble will only jeopardize their status when the new coaching staff cones in. Really feel for the seniors, though.

  230. cappie the dog November 1, 2015 5:55 am

    214.

    Great deadpan humor.

I’m not from your generation, but I am Asian and am old enough to have bought REM albums on vinyl from Harry’s Music Store.

What cracks me up about the women’s basketball games is how the cheerleaders go into the stands and try to motivate people of your age group to make some noise.

    Have a great day, sir.

  231. Old School Dave November 1, 2015 5:57 am

Good comments #215. If the underlying problem of the lack of support and the “Just win with what we give you” attitude among administrators and legislators continues, it’ll be more of the same for UH football. If UH wants to go cheap, there will be ample candidates to fill the head coaching job, but the same problems will remain. Just look at the football facilities and COA stipends Boise State has. Still remember when they were a Big Sky power.

  232. cappie the dog November 1, 2015 5:57 am

    215.

Byron Scott probably thought the Lakers would improve by getting rid of Jeremy Lin.

    28 pts. for Ricky Rubio?

The Lakers won’t win more than 25 games.

  233. Satgliders November 1, 2015 6:04 am

Hawaii’s football program will always be saddled with structural problems that most fans should know if they know anything about D1 football.

Let’s go over the glaring 3:

    • The obvious geographical disadvantage that forever will put UH football on too late in the evening for anyone in the East to even stay up for,

    • No competent coach like Dick Tomey and June Jones, will stay. They are recruited up and out.

    • We can’t even keep our own best talent. They are off to either to PAC12 schools or the other 2 Utah schools, or Boise State or almost anywhere but at home. They can’t afford the non-exposure if they hope to play on Sunday.

Unless UH is ready to grossly overpay for a real D1 coach, or hire some disgraced character like Sarkisian, and still overpay nothing will really change. I’ve been following Hawaii football for 41 years. These are the facts guys. God herself won’t change this.

  234. tom-warriornation November 1, 2015 6:35 am

“Chasing Championships”? We keep chasing last place in the MWC.

You are not keeping your promise to us; so you resign NOW should give us back your salary! We demand a refund since you did not fulfill your end of the “deal”.

  235. kakaako kid November 1, 2015 6:48 am

Coach Chow will return next year. He was given orders to drive attendance down so we could play home games at TC Ching and pocket all the revenue. Travel subsidies for St. Louis and Punahou would be minimal. We could add a surcharge to bring in Mililani, Kahuku and Waianae. Maybe Herman Frazier wasn’t so bad afterall.

  236. azwarrior22 November 1, 2015 7:12 am

It’s 7:12 a.m. in Hawaii…I’m waiting for the Breaking News.

  237. 808 November 1, 2015 7:14 am

    Chow time: 10 – 36

When will the UH announcement and press conference be held?

The game on national TV last night was horrible. If that game didn’t convince the people in power at UH, then I don’t know if anything can convince them that Chow is not the answer.

  238. Ipu Man November 1, 2015 7:38 am

Close down the University. Fire all the professors.
Sell the property. And give all the money to Rail.
P.S. Fire the state government, too. That would
save a lot of money for Rail.

  239. Markazulu November 1, 2015 7:52 am

It’s one thing to perform horrible on the road…. But a whole different scenario getting slammed by 50 points at home. No disrespect to Air Force they’re good but their not a powerhouse like Ohio st or Wisconsin and a 50 point loss at home is horrible.

  240. Come on, man! November 1, 2015 8:04 am

If the players really believed in the program and the coaches like people here say they do, they wouldn’t have lost by 7 tds at home to a mediocre conference opponent. You can say all the right things in press conferences like “we just need to execute better” and “we will continue to work hard” but the proof is in the pudding. And it’s not looking so good.

Chow is now running a broken football team. The time to go is now.

  241. Raider Dogs November 1, 2015 8:07 am

We need a change in our head coach no question. But all you so call fans that left before the end of the 3rd quarter should just stay home and stop complaining you too are the problem. It’s so easy to stop playing when your fans leave the stadium because why care if they don’t. Its hard to quit when so many show faith in you. So with that being said fans that leave early need to look in the mirror you too are the problem and do us all a favor don’t show up if you threaten to give up your tickets donate them or give them back to the athletic program. The good programs the fans stay to near the end no matter what. Our’s the leave to avoid traffic or to get home to complain. Sorry many of you need a gut check like Norm.

  242. 3-Prong November 1, 2015 8:09 am

The answer is sitting right in front of our noses. If Matlin and the higher ups and god forbid another committee, can’t figure this one out………

Hint: His name rhymes with Tune Tones (hehe) and 5,000 minimum new season tickets will be sold.

  243. 3-Prong November 1, 2015 8:11 am

Need to keep the commits to date interested and give us a fighting chance right off the bat for new ones next year.

  244. 3-Prong November 1, 2015 8:12 am

    …Go Bows!

  245. Warrior Fan November 1, 2015 8:13 am

    #FreeEwaliko

He’s got speed, why is he only on special teams? Last night’s game with the only points put on the board. Doesn’t that tell you something?

    #wakeupchow!

  246. Come on, man! November 1, 2015 8:28 am

Raider dogs: be careful what you wish for. A very large majority of UH fans are fair weather. JJ admitted this when he first got hired and said that Hawaii’s fan base is more of a pro type fan base than a college one, which presents unique issues.

So when you say “all you fair weather fans stay home and don’t buy tickets. The hard core fans (I would guess these fans are from a much older generation) will go to the games,” I hope you realize you’re talking about the death of the UH football program.

  247. Derek November 1, 2015 8:29 am

Lock of the year. Take UNLV over Hawaii. They will give no mercy. Line will probably around -14 to -17.

  248. kev-1 November 1, 2015 8:33 am

#240 … I agree that a program needs to have fans support regardless. BUT, I don’t think I can disagree more with your comment about why should players care if the fans don’t.

If there are players with that attitude, I don’t want em. Being a football player is tough. One minute the fans love you, theyou hate you the next. You still have to have the intrinsic drive as a competitor and will to win. If you’re quitting because your feelings are hurt over fans, you will have a very tough career.

  249. Old School Dave November 1, 2015 8:36 am

Water cooler talk story: This guy is a successful head coach at the FCS level. He also knows the “old WAC” as the DC at Wyoming under Joe Tiller. A successful head coach from the FCS level could end up like Craig Bohl at Wyoming (think the jury is still out on him), or he could turn out to be a Dino Babers, who went from Eastern Illinois, now successful at Bowling Green, and soon to probably be coaching at a Power-5 school.
    http://goredbirds.com/staff.aspx?staff=28

  250. Come on, man! November 1, 2015 8:36 am

Players should care because they’re division I athletes and to get to that level, you have to be ultra competitive and WANT to win. They also should care because they’re on scholarship (or want to be). That means, for all intents and purposes, the school is compensating them (poorly) to play football and win.

    This isn’t high school.

  251. Trunks420 November 1, 2015 8:39 am

I give the old ball coach this season and let it play out from there.

  252. Old School Dave November 1, 2015 8:42 am

Regardless of what happens today or tomorrow, there are still 4 more games to play. Hats off to UH players such as Ben Clarke, Keelan Ewaliko, and Jerol Garcia-Williams. These guys are still fighting in spite of all of the doom, gloom, and pilikia. Time to turn loose Ikaila? He’s only a junior and will be back next season as the likely starting QB.

  253. Come on, man! November 1, 2015 8:43 am

    UNLV game will be ugly.

  254. kev-1 November 1, 2015 8:49 am

Someone said earlier (something like) that no matter who you hire, even if it is someone that turns the program around, they will leave and UH will be in the same rebuilding position.

I disagree. You have to go the Boise and Oregon route. When the head coach leaves, you put his on staff prodigy in his spot. I think that was the idea when they replaced JJ with Mack, but they chose the wrong guy. He couldn’t carry on what JJ did. Could Rolo have back then? Idk. Now may be too late for Rolo.

  255. st. anthony trojan November 1, 2015 8:50 am

Warrior fan….you are correct…100 times over… me feel especially bad for his mom…

From track star for 2 years….QB that takes his team to states n wins a semi game..
to just running back kicks…makes no sense.

Chow is a run…run… dude…n recruited sum receivers with ‘no hands’.

But me is sure we all agree…we always get good punters huh…he seems to excell in that dept…

  256. Old School Dave November 1, 2015 8:54 am

Everyone go read this morning’s article on the late Rap Reiplinger and get a good laugh. All dis pilikia and hamajag stuff with the UH football team not good for da blood pressure.

  257. kev-1 November 1, 2015 8:55 am

And why do people keep saying “Tom Mason for interim coach?” His defenses have been getting torched. We have a very talented defense that keeps getting burned. That’s coaching and scheme people!

  258. st. anthony trojan November 1, 2015 8:56 am

Me feel bad for the parents also of Max…he sure tries… but he just does not have it with this team…because of pressure maybe…or he really not 100%…but time to admit…sumthing has to be changed…coach n QB…FANS CAN BE BRUTAL AT TIMES..INCLUDING ME… BUT IS THE REALITY…what else is there 2 do…just keep waiting for another loss…n go through the same pain over n over again???

  259. Old School Dave November 1, 2015 9:00 am

I think that Chris Naeole is the next in line as Assistant Head Coach, to take over the reins, should Chow be relieved with 4 remaining games. Could be wrong.

  260. moocher November 1, 2015 9:14 am

Cal lee head coach, JJ OC, Miano DC, ….keep gouveia, coach Abe, coach naeole…local or UH ties top to bottom with continuity.

I don’t think I’m a mason fan, obviously not a Bailey fan…but I think a coaching staff like the one above would keep some kids home and put fans back in the stands and get wins. Anyway that’s my two cents. Not perfect but doable.

  261. Akamai Okole November 1, 2015 9:15 am

    Need a guy who:
    1) can mastermind the biggest turnaround in NCAA history;
    2) is available now (maybe even has a bye week). Even if only volunteer coaching this season;
    3) wants to be in the position.

    heheheh

  262. moocher November 1, 2015 9:28 am

I’m am in Singapore…3 in the morning, where’s the breaking news.. *yawn if Hawaii wants big time football it starts with people willing to make some big time decisions and calls. First call should be to Mr chow to thank him. Second call to naeole or Mason to tell them take over the team. After that once people know, I bet fans and players will feel a lot of heaviness being lifted….just make the call and turn the page.

  263. Da Punchbowl Kid November 1, 2015 9:31 am

Hey! 🙂 Good Morning everybod… oh, nevermind. 🙁

    Akamai Okole – 260 – yes.

  264. Old School Dave November 1, 2015 9:32 am

Never easy to fire someone, but it goes with the job. Probably having the UH lawyers double-check Chow’s contract to avoid any unseen compensation before relieving him. Just speculating, but I think that Dave Matlin, like any AD, would like to bring in his “own guy” as football coach. The question is will there be meddling from those “unseen” local power brokers?

  265. Inyoface November 1, 2015 9:33 am

Chow for one more year! He will be bringing in 6’5 qb transfer from a big conference that’s just like Carson Palmer that will lead us the way!

  266. kev-1 November 1, 2015 9:39 am

And that QB transfer is going to run an up tempo offense that will put up 75 touchdowns.

  267. Akamai Okole November 1, 2015 9:39 am

    Could be worse.

    We could be Honolulu Blue

  268. kev-1 November 1, 2015 9:40 am

We should all just face the facts. We have been duped.

  269. kulawarrior November 1, 2015 9:41 am

New coach should be AD’s decision.

  270. st. anthony trojan November 1, 2015 9:43 am

inyoface u sure of that…. he he he…

    Raider Dog #240:

I take offense to your comments about those who leave early, etc.

We left before the first half ended, yes, but will still go to the last 3 home games. We are NOT fair weather fans!!!!!!!

As a UH student, the YMCA and YWCA, back in the early 60s, we were 200-250 strong at Termite Palace and the largest group attending games.

In 1968, after returning from military duty, I became a season ticket holder and still holds true today and will do so until I die. WE gave up men’s basketball, men and women v-ball, and baseball. Yet, today, our cash contribution to the non-revenue sports may far exceed yours. If you give more than $20,000 cash, then I bow to you.
