Bounce-back Tuesday

Inspired by tight end Harold Moleni’s speech, the Warriors went out and had an animated practice this morning.

The defense, in particular, was loud and riled. The practice ended when defensive tackle Ka‘au Gifford raced the other way with a turnover. Earlier in practice, Gifford appeared to have suffered a knee injury. He was helped onto a cart, and as he was being driven off the field, the other d-linemen razzed him. Gifford yelled that he was just getting ice and, sure enough, he was back in action several minutes later.

Ailing wideouts Marcus Kemp and Quinton Pedroza took reps without any difficulty. Quarterback Max Wittek also took all the first-team reps.

    Good morning everyone!

“[injured players] …took reps without any difficulty” is about as encouraging as it gets this year. Mahalo for the efforts!

  5. H-Man October 27, 2015 10:56 am

Really happy to read the players are animated and excited to play. Go Warriors !!!

  6. Warbow October 27, 2015 11:07 am

If we were playing any other team besides Air Force this week, Chow would have been let go after the Nevada game. Games against Air Force at Aloha usually draw a nice crowd with the military population on Oahu. So having Chow coach that game wouldn’t have any effect on the attendance of that game. Expect him to be let go after that loss.

  7. ML Warrior October 27, 2015 11:12 am

Just not the defense needs to get “up” but the whole team needs too play “with a chip on their shoulders”, this should have started when conference started. I hope it’s not to late…

    GO WARRIORS!!!

Animated = ???…. A win…or more excuses from the coach in charge ??

    Turn them loose… n see what happens…

At this point…not to much faith in Max….2 many int’s…

Fan interest is at an all time low. While we are at it the UH soccer team is just as bad. Do we make a change there too?

Niumatalolo has said he wants to come home. Does he want to be the next coach? Or do we go after Ivan Jasper who is OC, QB coach under Ken at Navy?

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:

While this blog is about Warrior Football, in my opinion, contrary to many who are calling for getting rid of Coach Chow, I believe that he has been relatively successful in assuring that the “Student” part of student athlete is fulfilled. UH is not a football factory where it pumps out a plethora of potential professional athletes. The example being, on the extreme end in basketball where Kentucky and North Carolina are under scrutiny for the “one and done” type players. Like any good coach, I am certain that Coach Chow and his staff when speaking with a prospective student athlete’s parents, the most important thing he/they promise is to assure that the player graduates. Any loving parent wants their progeny to succeed in life. The diploma is forever and is a key to fulfilling potential. Football is but a temporary thing unless you are an elite athlete and player. But even those know that at the professional level their careers are relatively short.

Is the coach wrong in fulfilling the promise to parents to get their sons’ to graduate? Or is winning games of such critical importance to the overall health and well being of the athletic program. Past football coaches have had their share of academic casualties. Coach Chow appears to be working hard to get the players the education needed for the their future lives. Am I too altruistic about the student athlete, or should I join the babel of Chow haters?

So I have heard conflicting reports in regards to Luke Shawley. So does anyone know what happened to the guy?

  14. nomu October 27, 2015 11:58 am

There’s a lot of talented and good guys on this team. No matter what happens down the road, hope these guys continue to support the program and things keep improving going forward. Hope they win this weekend. They can prove themselves on national tv and as you say, write their own story.

  15. Maddog50 October 27, 2015 12:00 pm

Just listened to most of the hearing with Dave Matlin and RBV. I thought I was watching ill advised Chicago Alderman! Matlin is way smarter than the inquirees. Double dipper Matt LoPresti had to take his shots and then announce he had a class to teach so he had to leave-please give me a break with politicians! Matlin did a good job but still no one wants to recognize what sports do for the entire state and economy. Hopefully someone can wake some of these guys up-and yes I can say without cause clause ten x without stumbling! Go Warriors!!!!

  16. kanak October 27, 2015 12:04 pm

Great news to hear that the team’s animated in the middle of a disappointing season. But the spirit/morale has never been in question, as these boys come out to play every game. However, the execution or lack thereof has and will continue to be the concern. We need to hear about the crispness of route running, timing of throws, seamless pickup of blitzes, etc. Will keep holding on until the team’s not bowl eligible and we can hopefully then look forward to the future… GO BOWS!

  17. Old School Dave October 27, 2015 12:07 pm

Still want the team to win, regardless of what happens at the end of the season. It’s for the players.

  20. Stephen Tsai October 27, 2015 12:46 pm

Mack wasn’t let go because of attendance or record. He was let go because of personal reasons.

Here is a link of the final candidates in 2011: http://www.staradvertiser.com/sportspremium/20111218__Interviews_begin_in_UH_coach_search.html
Of this list, I liked Brian Norwood. I don’t believe salary was a criteria in the final selection because both Akina and Norwood were anxious to get the job. If the ;job becomes available this season, I am hoping both apply again.

  22. Boolakanaka October 27, 2015 1:07 pm

Brian might be the available and dollar friendly. Duane, I’m told makes more than Chows base, and Stanford has already endowed their athletic scholarships. Kenny if he comes home, it’s to cruise, sole made plenty kupe at Navy. Jasper is his heir, so he is not going anywhere….

    # 10…like ur comments….but have to look adda side of the coin also…when coach comes calling for my son… as a dad n mother…you promise as a coach to care for his good health…physical n MENTAL…FOR ALL SPORTS…NOT ONLY FOOTBALL…
so please care for his mental health…in footballs case as a parent I expect a competent coach…not one to make blunders after blunders n lose games…yea…we all make mistakes..in judgement sum time…but tactical error on the field is really not acceptable…

    As for quitting… remember when you quit n retire…ur not a loser….Barry Sanders…QUIT…Bo Jackson QUIT…Rocky Marciano…QUIT… George Ornellas…QUIT…there is a difference between quitters… n QUIT….

#11 hitmanhart…yea many banged up….lets hope they rise to the occasion on Saturday n win…in spite of a lousy head coach…yea Haina park was the place to be when Midas came to town…nice community there… remember a very still in high school Luzken…pitching there…n JJ Andrade…so always helpful n always supporting things in the community…remember them teams from the mainland come over for the tournament…that always used to be a battle with them n Midas…remember one year they had a pitcher that played football for the 49ers…forgot his name…he was really good…remember was a one horse town.. but never did see ne horsies…think wal-mart stole them all he he he…where u stay now ?

  24. Old School Dave October 27, 2015 1:15 pm

Not a fan of the payout to the former BB Coach, but I find it laughable for a group of State of Hawaii Legislator to get all “huhu” over that, while some $30o million of tax payers money has been wasted by the State on the failed Hawaii Health Connector, and don’t forget another $14 million on a failed computer system for the DOT. Eh,….business as usual in paradise.

  25. Whats up October 27, 2015 1:16 pm

I think most of the Hawaii Football players would love to play for June Jones or Dino Babers and who ever the Defensive Coordinator is next or if Tom Mason keeps the job. There is a lot of D1 talent on the roster that Chow’s and his staff recruited, it’s not the Hawaii Football players fault that Chow has been able to provide them with a experienced QB coach or WR coach or a experienced Offensive Coordinator until this season. I mean seriously, remember when Chow dismissed coach Price and could replace him because UH had to pay coach Price for the entire year even though he wasn’t even coaching as OC at UH.

Then the Hawaii Football players had to put up with the rookie student GA Jordan Wynn as the QB coach/Offensive coordinator because of Chow not letting go of the offensive reigns and dismissing coach Price. Lets not even talk about WR coach Matthews inexperience, Defensive coordinator Thom Kaumeyer porous defense and the O line was incredibly horrible before Naole got it playing a little bit better.

The good that Chow has done is hire Strength and Condition coach Beemer with the boosters paying Beemer salary not UH and hire LB coach Kurt Gouviea. Clean up the lacking in discipline from Macks tenure, such as way many DUI’s, fighting in Waikiki night clubs, not making grades to play in games, etc. Chow has recruited the local boys way better than Mack and got some of them to commit early or just to commit of stay home at Hawaii.

So, I don’t blame the Hawaii Football players or say negative things about the Hawaii Football recruits/players because I have watch these young men play their okoles off and represent the University of Hawaii and there families proudly. So, lets keep in mind that we shouldn’t talk bad about the Hawaii recruit/players because it’s not there fault that Chow has not put them in ideal situations to receive proper coaching from certain coaching positions and for poor game management and play calling provided by Chow.

Seriously, that means Hawaii Football had 2 head coaches (McMackin and Chow) in a row that had the same game management, play calling problems. That should be a lesson learned that hiring coaches that have never been Head Coach hasn’t panned out well for Hawaii Football in the past 2 Head Coaching regimes.

  26. Old School Dave October 27, 2015 1:25 pm

In spite of all of the gloom, I like what I see in young players like Dany Mulanga at safety who is only freshman and has good size at 6.3 200 lbs. Same with Devan Stubblefield and Dylan Collie at WR, also freshman. Tui Eli has started all 8 games at center as a redshirt freshman.

  27. Fei Jai October 27, 2015 1:26 pm

Eff chow! Just cheering for the institution, the UH, and the young men on the team who give it their all everyday and at every game.

    Go Warriors!

  28. Arcumfortis October 27, 2015 1:30 pm

#10 AD….I agree that one of coach Chow’s most valuable contributions to UH football has been his emphasis on his players getting an education. If I was the parent of a D1 athlete I would be very reassured by this.

But one doesn’t have to be a “Chow hater” to recognize we have a major problem with the football program and that the economic viability of all UH sports depends on finding the solution. People don’t pay to watch players do well in math class. They pay to watch entertaining and well executed football. When the football is not well executed and entertaining their interest turns away.

I don’t think it is unreasonable to expect our next coach to both prioritize education and also create a football team that the community can embrace and support. Yes, some will be hateful in expressing their discontent about coach Chow. But many more are simply being level headed, observing a sinking ship and wanting send in the coast guard before it is too late.

  30. Shoko October 27, 2015 1:45 pm

I dunno if Matlin’s trying to be clever but this sounded like a cheeky reply. Not a good idea when you’re seeking additional funding from the State. Then again, I don’t know the context of the discussion that led up to that.

    Ferd via twitter
Sen Kim: “Gib Arnold’s contract took over year (& Ganot 6 months).” Matlin reply: “So, we’ve improved.” #HawaiiMBB

  34. Boolakanaka October 27, 2015 2:09 pm

#25, Dino will be in the Big 12 or SEC next year as a head coach. His success be hooves him to take the next conference up, not down.

All to athletes, especially football players getting in trouble, not sure if I agree. Plenty pilikia and hijacks in my day–the 24/7 media cycle is not a friend to young men with questionable decision making and tons of testerone….plus, HPD, can’t give breaks or warnings, like back in the day…..

Go warriors and the coaching staff!

  38. nomu October 27, 2015 3:04 pm

Have never seen the numbers published anywhere, but just how much did UH Football make last year? Maybe if we can get a better idea of just how much UH football actually made after all expenses last year, and how it’s shaping up this year, we can make better educated conclusions of how much it affects all other UH sports programs (the entire budget)? I’m sure all other UH programs are up to the challenges we currently face, but just for the sake of knowing, maybe it might help explain some things? Anyone know where we can get those numbers?

  39. islandman October 27, 2015 3:08 pm

“Pres.Lassner sez he is confident “we do not have (contract) language that catches us by surprise again.”
So how come Gib’s contract was written like that ?

    Here’s reassurance (?) :
” Choy says chancellor’s statement that he will personally review every head coach contract is bothersome. Asks if he’s qualified?”

So what did the chancellor (Hinshaw) and AD (Donovan) that were in power do when Gib’s contract was being executed in 2011 ? Read with their eyes closed ?

  40. george October 27, 2015 3:19 pm

Annoddah Dave – No, don’t lower yourself to the Chow haters. I want Coach to retire so he can rest. I respect my elders and I think he deserves a nice retirement. It’s hopeless to deal with the SOH and UH.

“Cali – Stephen Tsai makes me sick, if losing is the standard, then i guess its acceptable.” – Watch your Mouth!!

  41. pokesquid October 27, 2015 3:29 pm

First off…I am not trying to bash Coach Chow…I believe he is a good man with great integrity…I believe he earned all his previous credentials…However, I also believe that his time as head coach should have occurred 10 to 15 years ago when the game was still being played the way his strengths align.

Today’s game is a different animal…Again, I respect Coach Chow and believe he deserved this shot at being a head coach…I am sad that it isn’t working out…I am completely behind local Braddah, Uncles, Sistas, etc, trying to make Hawaii sports great…But it is what it is and it is time we move on.

Now with that said…All you people need to stop fooling yourselves with all these other coaches on the mainland with local ties, dropping everything they built and coming back home to Hawaii…They are not going to leave their P5 schools to come back to Hawaii to coach…The ONLY 2 people who could help stop the bleeding fast is June Jones or Rich Miano or both…They both understand Hawaii and they both have the knowledge of what “type” of football we need to run here to win…Remember now, these 2 former coaches live here, work here, have homes and families here…They are invested here…And that makes a big difference then someone coming in from the mainland, who doesn’t know or hasn’t been living here in a while.

One thing I like is the fact that if June Jones does come back he already has a familiar face in DC Tom Mason, DB coach Eliminian, DL coach Samuseva and LB coach Gouveia on the defensive side of the ball to keep on staff…That right there will keep the continuity on that side of the ball going…Now, on offensives side Jone’s should keep OL coach Naole but then hire someone like Timmy Chang (QB coach at SMU under Jones & Jackson St OC) to possibly run the offense as OC or at least be QB coach…For WR coach, well try getting Stutszman (sp) back home from I believe Portland State…These guys all know Jones system and they all know Hawaii football and especially the mentality of what it means to the Hawaii people, community and state…No way that is going to happen quick with any transplanted mainlander.

Still, another thing I don’t want to see is coach Jones surrounding himself with the OLD coaches from the past…No offense to the Lee brothers, Mouse Davis, etc…But we need young blood with new ideas…Jones needs to create the buzz again and then get someone ready to step in when and if he decides to leave.

Yes we all know that Jones left us and then quit on SMU…but so what?!…He has stated several times that his wish is to coach Hawaii one more time…I say, from what he did previously here, he deserves another shot…Hey, remember a Hall of Fame coach named Chris Ault?…Yeah he helped build Nevada up and then took a step back to be their AD…then when others couldn’t keep it going he came back and took over the job again, and brought the Pistol offense to fame and Nevada back to respectability….I believe that Jones can do this for Hawaii as well.

Anyways, in my opinion, this is the lineup I see that can help to fix this situation now and fast….BTW, I like the recruits that Norm did bring in…I just feel they will be better suited for Jones offensive schemes…especially on offense with all these young talented players like John Ursua, Dillon Collie, Ewaliko, Isiaha Bernard, Stubblefield…RB Harris, Davis, St Juste, Lakalaka…QB Zwahlen (11 rated QB in the ESPN 300 coming out of HS and also an Elite 11 QB as well) and recruits QB McKenzie and WR Kalakaua Timoteo from Mililani, just to name a few.

We shall see Gang…I am just like all of you guys, when the Warriors lose or are down…I feel like crap all day all night…Thank God for the Rainbow Wahines…BTW, speaking of the Wahines, just watch the recruits coming in next year…like arguably the 2nd best setter in the nation in Norene Iosia and another 6’2 OH in Kirsten Shibley.

  42. nomu October 27, 2015 4:10 pm

If you ever wondered why UH is taking so long on this issue, you might want to read this link. http://www.civilbeat.com/2015/01/uh-report-uh-manoa-athletics-big-part-of-hawaiis-economy/

Puts everything in perspective as to just how much UH athletics impacts the entire economy. Read the full report link in PDF on the above link. Seems to me that the better UH Football and other key programs do, the multiplier effect as described in the above article is huge on the impact on the state’s economy. If you explore this report, you’ll begin to see what is meant by “the powers that be” you always hear about. The more we take the time to learn about these things, we can make better educated suggestions and conclusions about UH athletics. Once again, thanks to Civil Beat.

With all the money these politicos squander to say nothing of the administration they should be climbing all over one another to find a way to double and triple these figures. If…..if……they were smart.

  50. H-Man October 27, 2015 6:50 pm

I wonder why State Sen. Mercado-Kim posed UH Athletics’ employment contract questions to AD Matlin when the Office of the Senior Vice President for Legal & General Counsel reports directly to the Board of Regents? Maybe she doesn’t know to address contract language concerns/questions to that department or to the BOR?

And here’s a reason why getting a new head football coach in the first week of December is important – “The (new 2013 NCAA) rules will be made effective immediately and mean that no in-person recruiting can take place from Dec. 16 through Jan. 15 — a month-long period that occurs during bowl season.” Top prospects need to be contacted/met by the new coaching staff in December, not after January 15th when national LOI signing day is on February 4th.

  51. A-House October 27, 2015 7:01 pm

I love UH sports and will support them to the end, but Air Force will prevail on Saturday – why? — cause they are more disciplined that UH – – from coaches to players

there are times it appears that the player knows that he will NOT to take out no matter what infraction he causes — either the position coach does not have the “”allas”” to do it or someone above told him that will not happen

it only goes to hurt the “team” effort to win a game.

  52. A-House October 27, 2015 7:04 pm

    “not to taken out”

what da hell kinda lingo is dat?????? change it to “not be taken out” —jeez, and you wen grad UH? no wonda Y

Donna Mercado-Kim, Isaac Choy and the other legislators: How about the $300 million you guys just flushed down the toilet for the Hawaii Health Care Connector? How about some accountability on your end before making “big body” in front of the TV cameras? You legislators are ultimately responsible. And how come the roads in your district “so junk?”

  60. papajoe2 October 27, 2015 9:32 pm

One of the criteria of being a head coach is knowing ALL the rules of the game no matter what sport. If you are truly a smart coach, you could take advantage of rules and know what to argue and not to argue. A rule was explained to me about the “jumping on” during field goal/extra point attempts. There is a buffer zone of 1 yard on the line of scrimmage where you can jump, but you cannot run from behind the zone and jump with a running start and cannot land on the center unless blocked into the player. I’m not sure exactly what is written in the rule but can someone find out for sure? Jezzy? FUA? 3-Prong? Boola? ST? Anybody? In both cases, our head coach was wrong and even cost us a penalty which led to a field goal and momentum change and, ultimately, the game.

Once again, I’m going to be like Perry & Price when they participated in Pigskin Picks.

    Hawaii 34
    Air Force 31

That 10-year-old girl who sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the outset of the Pelicans/Warriors game must be the most soulful Asian ever.

At UH games, my inner Randy Jackson thinks: “Kinda pitchy, dawg.”

    RE: #52
Old School Dave — I only read the S-A breaking news on the hearing, but I would like to think that it was more a public outrage reaction to the situation where– simply put, Gib Arnold was fired “without cause” for expediency due to NCAA violation allegations and as investigation later revealed, he could have been fired “with cause” and the whole thing turned around to bite us in the posterior. Not Bley-Vroman ‘s fault–Arnold had to go but there was no proof of the violations at that time. Lousy contract wording notwithstanding, it is outrageous we get screwed doubly even if it’s legally.

I would like to think it is similar to the Wonder Blunder case, where the senate questioning was to express the public sentiment and outrage over President Greenwood throwing Sheriff and Donovan under the bus and refusing to reinstate Donovan after commissioning private investigation and paying legal fees that totaled over $1 million. Of course, the $200K loss was the official reason for the inquiry.

#10 It is the student athletes job to fulfill his academic duties not the coach. It is the coaches job to push the athletes potential so that he can apply it on the field. To get each player to perform at the highest level possible. Because when they strive to become better they do better. Not just at football but life. you described from start to finish that Chow IS the problem. Maybe unknowingly? But
I say, when you were given 4 years to turn the program around. A high turn over of coaches. Poor recruiting. players not performing to their potential or players not being utilized properly. Coaches not living up to a standard or being better executed in their roles. And the lowest turnout of fans and tickets sales down. It is insane not to think the coach bears the burden of responsibility. Again, performance is crucial. At every level. From head coach to players to admin. Perception is reality. Good luck with recruiting decent players let alone the elite. No money, no facilities, and no real HC. A head coach knows how to lead, implement, and excute. So far, he has the record to show it. I feel for the players and program. But change is necessary.

I am not a resident of your great state. I am a life long resident of Illinois and most of my life Chicago and other politically corrupt ports of call. Dave Matlin hands down conducted himself professionally and with certain conviction. He clearly is a very intelligent and measured guy. I just was amused by one reps inability to verbalize the point he was attempting to extract. Another one is the classic double dipper State Rep, business interests and full-time job, oh wait it can’t be full time with all the other irons in the fire. Simply put totally frustrated with this inability to see the value of UH athletics economic impact and overall community impact if this is supported and done right. I taught for 11 years and walked away because of what I saw as people who just showed up for their job (teaching) and were protected by an organization. 30 years in fortune 50 company and believe me when I say accountability on a daily weekly monthly basis-I liked that!!!! So snuff of that crap now I just want a win for my beloved Warriors!!!! Let get this one somehow someway-Go Warriors!!!!!

I think the “Wonder Blunder” fiasco would have hit the national news wire if it had not coincided with the Penn State scandal.

    No Penn State scandal?

A whole slew of slow news days.

Something borderline absurdist like this would have made ESPN.com,

Every day I would check, hoping the story wouldn’t be picked up.

To put things in perspective, at least Norm Chow hasn’t put the football program on probation.

    C’mon, Max Wittek.

    Find Kemp.

    Hit Kemp.

Marcus Kemp looked so good in the Colorado game.

I thought he was going to be Jason Rivers.

I think there are problems with the SA server.
    It seems slow.
As for posting on SA stories, it won’t allow if you’re not a subscriber.
