West side story

Largely overlooked in Saturday’s loss was tight end Dakota Torres’ 9-yard catch. It was the sort of play receivers are coached to make — secure the football before pivoting, then grasping tightly while absorbing hits — but often forget technically in the emotions of the game. It was a smart play, a tough play. And then — boing! — the realization hit that Torres, like many who play smart and tough football, was raised in Waianae.

People of a certain generation — old farts like me — remember when there was no need for recruiting services, HUDL or combine camps. The best way to recruit was to keep going west until reaching Pokai Bay. Is it any wonder the Warriors’ best unit — the linebackers — is coached by Waianae’s Kurt Gouveia?

The number three is not a trend, but it should be noted that three of the toughest Warriors — Torres, Kennedy Tulimasealii and Ka‘au Gifford — are from the 96792.

Julian Gener did not win the MWC’s defensive player of the week award — the Air Force DB accounted for three turnovers — but his 19-tackle performance might have been the best Warrior performance in years. He tackled SDSU rushers for an average gain of 1.88 yards, including 1.43 in the final 10 full possessions. Gener was the rover in the Warriors’ 3-5-3 scheme. And he played most of the game with what appeared to be a cut on the side of his right eye.

    The Hawaii Public Library system is embarrassingly lacking in books that deal with the theory side of film.

    At UH, who has a film school, but not a formal film studies program, had film studies classes scattered across all the disciplines.

    One of these classes was in Women’s Studies.

    We had to write a paper on pornography.

    Linda Williams is the most reputable film scholar who writes on the subject.

    The book I needed to write my paper on “the male gaze”, “Hard Core: Power, Pleasure, and the ‘Frenzy of the Visible'” was available, not at the Hawaii State Library(where it is now), but at the Waianae Public Library.

    It’s a pretty nice library.

    I remember stopping off at the Longs and being irritated that they didn’t sell Samurai.

    I saw the Waianae connection and thought that Gifford did a really good job. Early on SDSU attacked the left side of our defense as Luke struggled against their right tackle. Gifford helped to shore up our dline.

    It is when Julien went out with an injury that Pump scored a td on the very next play. I had thought at that time that if Julien was in there Pump would not have scored. Julien was our best fill linebacker yesterday. He was everywhere.

    My favorite West Side player of all time is Levi Stanley. Pound for pound he was the most ferocious defensive lineman in UH football history IMO. When Kennedy committed to the Warriors I posted that he reminded me of Levi. Who can forget Levi’s performance at Husky stadium when the underdog Rainbows took down the heavily favored home team Washington of the Pac 10. Those goal line stands with him as the anchor are legendary, ones that we can hope that all Warriors can emulate.

    Also he was a nice guy, despite his reputation and stature he gave you the time of day. I remember talking story with him in the training room, he always made time to talk to a small fry like me.

    After the SDSU game, I basically just watched Groundhog Day all over.

    Coaches continue to show how incompetent they are. It’s quite obvious Bernard is the most gifted WR we have that SDSU corner could not stay with. Had 10 yard cushion opening up easy 7 yard hitch route and we continued to not go to it. Mel Davis was getting decent yards on the ground and should have gotten more carries when game was within 1 score.

    Naeole has been the biggest disappointment for me because his unit continues to make the same mistakes and can’t recognize a blitz the save their lives. He’s recruited poorly compared to prior o line coaches over the years and can’t get the guys to play as a unit.

    Chow has no idea what identity he wants his team to be considering he changes his scheme every single season. No consistency, constant turnover with coaches and players at key positions.

    keep doing the same stuff, keeping the same coaches and expecting a different result.

    Ok my rant for the day

    Wondering why San Diego was running where no one was, I remembered what Kifi told me about watching the line when the ball was snapped, rather than focusing on the QB. Then I saw No. 90 Kennedy Tulimasealii creating havoc. Getting triple teamed and pushing the pile back as the linebackers (especially Gener) zipped in. I could be wrong but I think most the SDSU running plays to his side never gained much since the ball carrier had to go wide and pursuit caught up.

    Matlin’s line that he gave to Reardon wasn’t anything surprising. He isn’t going to bash on Chow or give him a ringing endorsement. He could have basically said nothing with the same results but it would probably be a weird awkward silence.

    Lets just hope that the miso between his ears is full of potential candidates that will bring this program back up and the details of Chow’s release are being worked out.

    Had to comment on the asinine quote in Dave Reardon’s column this morning; “UH blamed the inability to stop Donnel Pumphrey on having no one that fast on its scout team”. Are your freakin kidding me!!! This is the explanation/excuse given???

    One, I’d like to know who the heck said this. Second, before saying this did you look at the film on that 1st Pumphrey TD run? Look at the film, the play flowed to SDSU’s right, the line and tight end punched the Warrior defenders 2 to 3 yards back, the two defenders on that side did not get any push upfield and were engaged with Aztec players, they could not get off the blocks and lost outside containment on that side. Looked like the Warriors were slanting to the strong side, SDSU’s left side. Yes Pumphrey is fast and rand for that 34 yard touchdown. But what the ???? did his speed have to do with the wrong way stunt, defenders getting pounded off the ball, not shedding the blockers and losing outside containment to allow him to skirt untouched to the end zone? Anyone else observe this?

    USC fired head coach Sarkisian today due to his drunken behaviors at practices and games. Pat Haden is looking to tap University of Hawaii’s head coach, Norm Chow, as new head coach. Even though Coach Chow has a overall losing records in his three plus years in Hawaii, they like him because he is mature like a rock, without any scandals and well respected. He had coached QBs such as McMahon, Young, Palmer, Rivers, etc. He will be able to work with Kessler to improve his performance. They also believe USC has a much deeper and more talented roster to allow Chow to be successful. In return, USC will compensate UH $5 millions and their endorsement for UH to join the Pac-12 conference.

    We got man-handled early on in the game. I thought that Aztec right tackle did a really good job blocking our left end. Our starting left end is too small for the position that they have him. We need a bigger more physical run stopper at that position.

    Navy has 2 oline coaches. One is the run game coordinator and also coaches the centers and guards. The other coaches the tackles. Their oline does a really good job against more talented teams. Seems to work for them.

    Just read that South Carolina head football coach, Steve Spurrier, age 70, announced his retirement today after his team posted a 7-6 record last season and is currently 2-4 this season. He led his team to three consecutive 11-win seasons from 2011 to 2013. They won the SEC East title in 2010. An interim head coach to be announced tomorrow.

    Hmmm, something to ponder. Maryland is 2-4, 0 -2 in conference; they fire the coach. South Carolina is 2 -4, 0-2 in conference; head coach retires. North Texas is 0-5, 0-2 in conference; head coach fired. Hawaii is 2-4, 0-2 in conference; “you fill in the rest”

    I don’t think Mason meant there were no speedy guys on scout. Pereese Joas is just as fast as Pumphrey. I think Mason meant that it’s difficult to simulate game speed. That’s because adrenaline and full-impact blocking increase the pace.

    My name is real because that’s how I roll. I’ve been reading everyone’s posts for quite a while and I just wanted to throw this out there….. I am not related to norm chow so whoever wants to run their mouth after my post can come see me at my tailgate which is right next to the Na Koa boosters tailgate every game…. Ask for me and I’ll step up.
    A lot of people want to trash norm chow. If your one of these guys then yaah you right on.
    The bottom line is he is here to work with what he has and who will come to play ball in Hawaii no booshet.
    Norm chow is a badass and he can show it if he has the right tools.
    A lot of players leave to the mainland because they just like you look at the little picture… The little picture shows a team who can’t win and don’t get national attention….. I say this…. If you want attention go sit in the middle of ala Mona with a pacifier.
    Hawaii needs HAMMERS!…. Bruddahs that are down to get DOWN!.
    That’s what Hawaii needs and that’s what Norm is looking for…..I’m not a recruiter or am I a kool aid drinker……. I wish we had the al nogas of yesteryear but no more…. What we do have is positive vibes that we all can project to the parents of possible recruits moving forward. …. Plenty guys talk about firing norm but seriously look at what and who plays for Hawaii…. Plenty guys not even from Hawaii, but they come because this is all they have, plenty guys who want to represent Hawaii even though they dont know our culture…. They may not be what you all want but they doing their best so give them some love!…..: the kids who are leaving Hawaii are leaving because they think they have a better chance to get recognition yet in reality they, like wittek will only see real action and get seen if they are HAMMERS if they put out from day one!…..     The team needs a win in the worse way. The fans need a win in the worst way. The physical pounding on the field and the demands of travel have taken it’s toll. The team and it’s fans need a morale boost only a win can provide. 3-4 gives everyone hope with six games remaining. I don’t want to think about the fall out 2-5 will bring.
    I liked the adjustments the defense made in setting the edges confining SDSU’s running game inside the tackles. I was disappointed the offense didn’t make adjustments in picking up the two blitzers. It’s frustrating watching the opposing defenses imposing it’s will against our offense.

    Anyone notice the shovel pass last game? I think I saw one…
    It was not immediately obvious to me because the receiver was running east-west and Wittek flipped the ball right behind the center position. The receiver caught the ball but could not turn the corner when taken down by one defender. If he could have slipped that, there was a lot of open space. I was thinking how dangerous that play was and how many ways it could go very wrong until I realized it was a shovel pass. Surprise!

    ST, thank you the quote. However, that is the very reason as commander, captain, general, or head coach. Of any brigade, ship, soldier, or team. You have to know WHY you do what you do. Your WHY has to be significant and greater than yourself. Because you lead a group of men who lay there lives down to fight for a cause. For country, for freedom, for your brother…. There is no leadership because he does not lead in a way to uplift, encourage, and love. Yes, the key to all teaching and understanding is love. I will share a quote by Aikido Sensei Shinichi Suzuki of Maui on Ki healing and teaching. “You’ve got to have love for your fellow man.”
    I believe Chow has lost his love of the game and the reason why he does it. Especially for the men in which he serves and teaches. To raise the next generation of leaders, coaches, players, and men with pride and integrity.
    He lost sight of what matters in coaching these men and his coaching staff. He needs to watch the documentary UNDEFEATED. Know your why?

    Thank you Balko, knowledge is power. But to the team and it’s coaches. You are appreciated. No matter the challenges you face it’s how you face them. Hold your heads up and play every game like it’s your last. Enjoy every moment because soon it will come to an end. Thank your parents and peers or those who made a difference in your life. Know your Why? In everything you do. Give it purpose. To the parents of these players and coaches, thank you for your support and sacrifice. As the saying goes, GOD, FAMILY, AND FOOTBALL…… in that order.

    It is whining. Repeating the same rant over and over…. day after day. Post your rant once and move on … think about why the whiners post their rants on the blog over and over … they have a captive audience, who would stick around to hear someone rant/whine about the same thing over and over ….. most boards would put the person on time out from spamming the board.

    aloha everyone !! nice story ST !! one thing for sure we all had high hope for this years team !! with all the changes in coaches and what style of play was coming to UH . then 3 road lostes and no point to show for it !! and the kids playing there hearts out !! then a other bad showing by the offence this past weekend really got to some of us UH fans !! we had to Vent aready !! asking change !! only because if you look at this this team on paper we got a dam good team!! plus this you cold see max is hurting and the heart he has to try and come back in !!
    and like i said the other day ST you and all the play by play guys got one of the hardest job know because how the season is going and you guys got be middle man !!

    saying chow’s time is up has nothing to do with supporting or not supporting the players. Try think little bit and see that thanking chow and moving on IS 100% thinking about and supporting the players. 2 sides to every coin.

    It’s the same as saying i support our soldiers, but we need new leaders who make policy to put our soldiers in harms way.

    yeah, same argument because chow is not giving any new results.

    Aaron K I like your perspective- so we should have scored at WI and made it more of a game, gave a huge effort at OSU for all but the last half of the 4Th. Have two wins and clunked on O vs SDSU. There were a lot of good things maybe the emergence of Torres, special teams played best game yet. So go get some O and start games in a fever pitch! I am willing to bet the losses we have we among those that we just are not yet ready to win. The upcoming portion of the schedule has the bulk of possible wins for this team as it stands. Gotta generate offense to the tune of a minimum of 4. Scores per game. By the way no excuse but Pumphrey is an

    exceptional back on most teams want to challenge that just check his history and stats-I am moving on to the NM game and a great time with the Dave Holmes era players about 15 of them. Barry Hale is coming from Ecuador where he lives to join us. I remain supportive and optimistic for the balance of the year. Go Warriors
