Warriors: Construction costs

Defensive coordinator Tom Mason had mixed feelings when he watched cornerback Rojesterman “Roe” Farris II score on a pick-six and make an acrobatic pass breakup against the first-team offense this morning.

Farris, a freshman from Coral Springs (Fla.) High, is projected to redshirt this season.

“I’m thinking: ‘Why are we redshirting this guy? He’s making plays.'” Mason said.

Farris is among a group of freshman redshirt possibilities that includes quarterback Aaron Zwahlen, punter Alex Trifonovitch, linebacker Solomon Matautia, and offensive linemen Austin Webb and J.R. Hensley.

“If you want to develop a program, you have to redshirt freshmen,” Mason said. “That’s the way it is.”

Farris took a turn as a second-team cornerback with the regular defense. Matautia has not played this season, but he was on the past three trips as an emergency linebacker. The hope is not to use Matautia, enabling him to count this as a redshirt year.

Still, with the growing list of injuries, it takes restraint not to play potential redshirts.

“You’ve got to bite the bullet,” Mason said.

Play em. In my business world you take care of today and take care of the future when it comes. It’s here now, win now and future is secured! So many teams play true freshman/doesn’t bother them-do what you gotta do when you gotta do it period-Go Warriorrs

  3. jimmy the lock October 7, 2015 11:13 am

What? If you’re good you play. Recruit to win.

  4. st. anthony trojan October 7, 2015 11:20 am

They sorely need people on the field that can make plays…on both sides of the ball..

There are 8 games left…if he plays or ne other play now…that much more experience they will bring to the table next year…he is mature enough to make plays now…should be mature enough to play…

By the way…who was the QB…in them examples you stated above…??

Wasn’t one of Chow’s comments regarding freshman is that we do not recruit to have redshirts sitting??? Hope Tom Mason realizes that if they do not win and play respectfully tough football, he will not be around to enjoy the fruits of freshman Roe Farris II’s labor.

Very interested to see if my memory regarding Chow’s stance on redshirting is correct?

  7. nutmegger October 7, 2015 11:46 am

In business you use whoever can get the job done. Play ’em.

  8. st. anthony trojan October 7, 2015 11:54 am

    Yea…that seems to be our problem…redshirts freshmen…

Seems to me sumone should have told the Boise coaches..they have redshirt their “freshman” QB… that is the way it is…

Better spread the word to Tennessee n Mariota n Winston…both “freshman rookies”…While sum will make n impact others will not… (manziel) but u try ne way…play to win like maddog50… says…no need save for JJ….next year…he go find his own..
    HE HE HE

  9. Shoko October 7, 2015 11:55 am

Not positive but I thought Chow saying not redshirting players that can play now applied to his first year as head coach when he was building from scratch. Great that Mason is thinking about the future of the program but we might be facing a totally regime next season where he’s on the outside.

  10. A-House October 7, 2015 11:59 am

all coaches say the best 11 will be on the filed, yet they will not play a true freshman – paradoxically – to save a red shirt year

hey coaches, you can also use a “red shirt” year later!!!

Coach Mason may not be around next year if Chow goes. Play’em coach!!!

  11. Wayne October 7, 2015 12:04 pm

I love the idea of building a program…when you’re a coach in year 1 or 2…but not 4. It’s win NOW for Coach Chow, who needs to make a bowl or will likely be out of a job. Especially with today’s student-athletes that may not want to stick around either.

  12. oneseason October 7, 2015 12:31 pm

It’s year 4 of program building. Red shirting to build could make sense. Maintaining red shirts to have something to hype for next year could also make sense, I guess. IMO, beating at least 4 MWC teams this year definitely makes sense.

  13. Arcumfortis October 7, 2015 12:31 pm

This Saturday’s game is big. Maybe the biggest game in the Chow era. Win and the rest of the season seems brighter. Lose and we have dug a hole we may not be able to get out of.

The Chow era has had a recurrent pattern. We start the season against tough opponents and play well enough to inspire confidence (even with losses the first three years). This year of course we won our opener. Then as the season unfolds we seem to play worse and look bad most of the time. This year is starting to have the same feel.

But, we can turn it around by getting our act together, playing well and winning against San Diego State. A win would at least implicitly announce that the drubbing we took at Boise State was heavily influenced by a ridiculous travel schedule that left the team exhausted. Not that we are that inept a team.

We win and maybe a few fans start returning. I know some here express their displeasure with the HC in rather hostile ways. And others call them out on it and call them “haters.” But there comes a time when even the most loyal fans have had enough. It seems that we are at that time.

To me it’s simple. If Farris can help the team win, play him. If not, red shirt him.

If you don’t redshirt freshmen, you will never build a team. The redshirt freshmen become the juniors and seniors that win championships and they use their extra redshirt year to grow, mature and learn the game.

If something was really on the line at this point, like a championship and that player was critical to success because an upper classman is injured, then one might consider it.

  20. Old School Dave October 7, 2015 2:31 pm

I remember back in 95, a desperate season for Bob Wagner with the pressure to win or get fired. People forget that he had a decent and talented recruiting class. Players such as George Ornellas, Stevie Laulu, Peter Salavea, Haoli Wong, Adrien Klemm, Kaulana Noa, among others. Sadly, players such as Ornellas (quit), Laulu, and Salavea ended up never playing much and leaving UH for one reason or another.

BTW, here are the coaching salaries at Boise State:

of two golfers on a putting green with one ready to putt.
But off in the distance they see a gigantic mushroom
atomic cloud. And his buddy says, “go ahead and putt.
The blast won’t hit us for another 3 or 4 seconds…

When was the last time UH beat San Diego State, either home or on the road? I rest my case, San Diego State 24, Hawaii 10.

  23. WWF October 7, 2015 3:28 pm

    20. Old School Dave,

The Boise State’s Football Coach’s salaries are a large part of their success and allows them to maintain continuous success. Boise attracts and retains talented Assistant Football Coaches with their higher salaries. Their salaries increase as they prove themselves in their respective coaching positions.

Members of the State Legislature could learn about how a football program can reduce a college’s expenses by investing in a successful football program to increase revenue.
UH Administrators could learn about how they could structure more favorable contracts for UH, so Coaches earn their keep, instead of having to buyout poor performers.

  24. amela October 7, 2015 3:36 pm

Save them for what, redshirt? Don’t need to save them for next year if they’re ready. Might not a have a next year to coach them. I don’t understand why the state can’t help build UH sports. Only join in when they’re winning.

If Farris has developed into our best (or second best) corner, he should play. We just started conference play, and 8 games seems to be a good use of a year of eligibility. 5th year seniors are valuable assets on any team. But so are talented true freshman who are able to contribute on the field.

Attended my first Seahawk game Monday night. A large majority of the fans were jerseys. We had no idea there was a controversy on a non-call in the end zone. We ate chinese food nearby to wait for the traffic to disappear, then when we got into Nicholas’ car, we heard on the radio about the referee missed call.

People are crazy over their Seahawks. Every friday is Blue Friday, and businesses everywhere allow their employees to dress showing their support of the team. Game day, you see Seahawks gear being worn everywhere, especially at the shopping malls. So glad the weather was comfortable that night.

It’s almost impossible to get on the list for season tickets. Nicholas has a friend that was put on the wait list and after a few years, he’s now around 10,000 on the waiting list. Because of this, tickets are expensive through third party sources like Stub-Hub. Our seats on the first row of the third level face vallue was $65, but we paid a lot more for them. Guess it’s just once a year, if even that often.

Before the season started, we were invited to a Seahawks practice. Tickets were free and distributed by the team to their season ticket holders. They’re transferable but not resaleable. If caught reselling, you would lose your season ticket status.

After Wyoming road trip, driving anywhere else seems short. Considered going to Boise to watch UH football game. So glad we didn’t, would have been miserable watching that performance by the Rainbow Warriors.

In 2011, Chris Gant was warming up on the sideline ready to go in and burn his redshirt year. Mack or Rolo or someone decided not to do the selfish thing and Chris had two more full seasons to play under a new coach. Play Roe or redshirt him? I say do what’s best for the team but also do what’s best for the player. It’s easy to have an opinion when you know nothing about the situation.

  47. Fei Jai October 7, 2015 9:35 pm

Norm one good recruiter. Das why he puts out winning seasons. Dad why we going win this week. Norm knows talent. He good at identifying and recruiting talent. He also good at calling a good game, das why he has one winning record at UH. We so blessed to have norm.

  48. rundown808 October 7, 2015 9:48 pm

Comes down to coaching. There are coaches who know what to do with talent and those who only know what they think they know. Some coaches will play the better man to win. Regardless of age or status. Walk on, scholarship, freshman, senior? Doesn’t matter. If you have an arsenal of talent on the team to get the job done then to redshirt a freshman makes sense. You have coaches playing freshman who beat out senior players for their spot. And they are killing it on the field. Because at the end of the day this is about money. Got to fill those seats in the stadium. This is about winning.

Tulsi Gabbard talked about Syria on “The Rachel Maddow Show”.

This is something to be proud about, unlike the time our former governor spoke at length to a scatalogical hand puppet on Late Night w/Conan O’Brien.

I actually voted for her because the UHPA endorsed her.

She is the last republican I’ll ever vote for.

Here we go…. is this a test? Or are you just saying what you think we want to hear? Stop, stop stop. If you had a good hand you would play it. It’s all about the OOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Lets keep it real. You should only be talking about redshirts who are WR, TE, SB, RB, OL, QB. Period. Lets hear about that. About what we have to look forward to.

  51. SteveM October 7, 2015 10:49 pm

ST’s blog entry today bothers me. The defense that held Ohio State and Wisconsin to 2 touchdowns at halftime got rung up for 55 points by Boise–and it could have been worse except for an unwritten Mercy Rule. Is Boise that much better than Ohio State or Wisconsin?…or is the D as beat up as the O after two body bag games in a span of 2 weeks?

Been watching what ST says…and doesn’t say… since day 1 and I suspect he is walking around with tape all over his mouth as far as the injury situation goes. Hope I’m wrong. Yes, burn the redshirt year if it puts healthy bodies on the field.

    Finally Luke Clements?

Hawaii last beat SDSU in 2005, 49-38. It seems like a long time ago, but consider these two teams did not play each other from 2006 – 2011. The next time they met was in 2012, Norm Chow’s 1st year as HC. SDSU won 52-14. SDSU also beat the Warriors in 2013 and 2014, 28-21 and 20-10, respectively. Not exactly blow-outs.

    cocobean,

The first thing that UH should do is hire away Keith Bhonapha from Chris Petersen at Washington. He was the first Assistant that Petersen took with him from Boise State. An awesome recruiter who is also a former UH Football alumni, who served as a UH Grad Assistant. He knows Boise State’s success model, as he served as their Director of Operations for a few years and could serve us well in helping to develop UH’s program into a successful winning program.

  58. Willie October 8, 2015 9:00 am

#51 SteveM. It is about style of play and match ups. Big 10 football is run the ball, power football. Not a lot of points typically on O. Now BSU is another animal, special packages with personnel, trickery/misdirection, lot of play action pass. Warriors had no chance on the blue turf.
