Hawaii opens at 36th in RPI, up to No. 8 in poll

The Ridiculous Percentage Index is out
Hawaii at No. 36, behind powers Arkansas State (16), Missouri State (23) and SMU (35). One spot ahead of a bad San Diego (9-6) team.

Unfortunately, UH can’t take their ball and go play somewhere else. It is what happens when someone else controls everything and sets the rules from a far. It is like NextEra taking over HECO and having a Florida base management tell Hawaii what and how they are going to get their energy. (Forgive me for the political jab Cindy.)

  2. Cubicle1126 October 5, 2015 9:35 am

#36 in RPI. (it should be noted hawaii was just at an estimated RPI of 18 a week ago.) this is what playing playing fullerton and uc riverside gets ya. after playing fullerton (who is 0-15) and riverside (who is 6-10), hawaii’s RPI dropped like a lead balloon. ouch!

big west is down big time this year unfortunately. 6 of the 8 teams that hawaii will face in the conference have losing records. but hawaii can’t control who they play in conference.

have to hope that hawaii’s non-conference opponents fare better. but it’s not looking good for many of them.

-idaho is 4-12 overall, and 1-3 in the big sky. not great for hawaii’s RPI.
-wichita st is faring well. 11-6 overall, and 2-1 in mvc.
-oregon st is gonna kill hawaii’s RPI (even tho they’re in the Pac-12). they are 3-11, and 1-3 in conference.
-iowa has a great 10-7 record, but they may not hold up for long, as they are 0-4 in the Big-10.
-american is a bright spot! they are 12-5, and 4-0 in the patriot league.
-ucla is 11-3 (awesome!), but how many losses are they going to rack up in the Pac-12? … where they’re currently 2-2.
-san diego st won’t help. they are 4-12 overall, and 1-3 in the mwc.
-florida is 9-4 overall, but have taken some lumps. they are 1-3 in the sec, when many were thinking/hoping they’d be running the table.
-eastern washington will help hawaii more over the course of the season. they are 9-6, and a resilient 4-0 in the big sky.
-csu bakersfield’s record is a dismal 4-11. we can only hope they pile up wins in conference to at least claw their way to a .500 win percentage. they are 2-1 in the wac. (and remember, since hawaii played them twice, their record gets calculated into hawaii’s RPI twice… and the same for the big west teams, since hawaii also plays each of them twice.)

still half a season left to play … so not everything is settled, of course. we’ll just have to see how it all plays out.

  3. pouncer84 October 5, 2015 9:37 am

Or in local terms … having the local Target store have their AC temps controlled by the home office on the mainland. Manager told me this last Christmas when it was boiling hot in the store. They’re not allowed to change it. SMDH

  4. Cubicle1126 October 5, 2015 9:43 am

how bizarre is that going to look if hawaii ends up in the top 10 of the coaches’ poll, but NOT seeded come tournament time. sad that that’s the way the college volleyball world operates …. :-/

  5. jmy October 5, 2015 9:46 am

Interesting that Nebraska stayed at 4…I guess beating #1 then losing to #13 is considered a wash…I think Kansas is overrated, but we’ll see how they do against Texas on 10-23…also interesting that Missouri is unranked while Arkansas is 22…no love for Cal Poly either…

  6. H-Man October 5, 2015 9:56 am

Focus has to be on winning out. Period. Go to the NCAA and make your statement. Forget the RPI.

  7. H-Man October 5, 2015 10:01 am

Heaven forbid the Wahine get sent to USC for their regional. Going to Washington might not be any better. Someone mentioned Kansas? But why worry? Bring on the best!

  8. Vbfan4life October 5, 2015 10:40 am

How did the big east and other smaller conferences get so many teams ahead of us in the RPI?

Is there any movement to include the coaches poll into seeding at all

  9. misterfudge October 5, 2015 10:47 am

If they stay that low for the remainder of the season there’s gonna be a lot of nervous seeded teams hoping they don’t get the Wahines in the first round.

  10. Ashley October 5, 2015 10:48 am

i watched some of the Washington – USC game on sunday. honestly i don’t think USC is better than Washington, nor do i feel Washington is better than SC. they look pretty much like similar powerhouse teams in my opinion, but that’s just me. others may see it different though. do they look beatable? of course. i honestly rather see SC at number one rather Penn State, if there is any team in the nation who is completely overrated, it would have to be them. but being number 1 could spell trouble for any team that lands there, and i can’t wait to see SC play at Washington. as for Hawaii, i like that their hard work is showing, but still a lot of work to be done. hoping to see Higgins & Greely return Friday. any update on those two by the way???

  11. Cindy Luis October 5, 2015 11:04 am

    10. both Greeley and Higgins will see the doctor late this afternoon after class. won’t know anything until then or until tomorrow morning.

for the curious who asked earlier
Kahakai is the No. 3 setter but could not change to that position during a set where she was the libero.

If Greeley is out this week, Shoji said he may have Mitchem taking swings on the outside. likely would have her on the right and move Taylor to the left.

  12. warriorfan October 5, 2015 11:05 am

Oh well was expecting this, chances for hosting are pretty much shot unless the ncaa feels generous.
The preseason schedule was just not tough enough ( bakersfieldx2 didn’t help at all) and a crappy conference this year. If the conference does not improve UH will have to schedule much tougher in the preseason. They need to have at least a top 5 rpi before conference starts so it doesn’t drop to much when they play the riversides and fullertons.
Maybe even UH should go out on the road at Wichita State again, I would prefer UH hosts two matches in December anyway instead of two matches against a team like Bakersfield.

  13. kk808 October 5, 2015 11:12 am

Agree with H-Man; can’t do anything about RPI; just focus on winning each game.

  14. Maverick October 5, 2015 11:17 am

    Various thoughts…

On today’s #8 AVCA ranking: not surprising, although mildly surprised that a four-loss Stanford team is #7. With three of four losses against the current nos. 1, 3 and 5 teams (and all ranked in the top six when Stanford played them), I can understand the reluctance to severely punish the team. Florida, on the other hand, is losing to far lesser teams and now is at 17. Florida is a far different team than the one UH played…they may have peaked early.

On today’s #34 RPI ranking: no surprise here, based in the estimated calculation I’ve been tracking. As of today, UH has the worst strength of schedule (SOS) pct. in the top 73 RPI teams, and overall rated 211 out of 334 teams. It is the only SOS in the top 73 that is below .500. The more you win and the higher your SOS, the better will be your RPI. That’s how a team with relatively less talent can still earn a decent if not good RPI/RPI ranking. See below (team name, AVCA rank, RPI rank, record, SOS ranking):

    Arkansas St., NR, 16, 15-1, 62
    Missouri St., NR, 22, 12-4, 26
    So. Methodist, NR, 35, 13-3, 76
    Univ. Hawaii, 8, 36, 14-1, 211
    San Diego, 29, 37, 9-6, 19

On hope for a RPI ranking rise this week: hard to tell/it depends. CSUN and LBSU are a combined 17-16, so no real improvement in UH’s SOS. And UH must win both matches. A lot depends on how the teams just above UH in the RPI ranking fare this week and the records of their opponents.

On seeding (again): as mentioned above, UH needs to win out. Otherwise, UH gives the seeding committee a good excuse not to seed it (how can you say you are a top ten team if you can’t run the table in a weak conference?). For optics reasons, I will go so far as to say that UH needs to sweep all or nearly all those matches. Assuming UH runs the table and is ranked in the top ten, then it’s saving grace may be the fact that the committee will consider the AVCA poll in its seeding. As mentioned above, it would be odd to have a top ten AVCA team not get a seed…and that may lead to quite a controversy.

Last thought: Sicario a great movie. I highly recommend it.

  15. Cubicle1126 October 5, 2015 11:20 am

i think kansas is interesting. they’ve beaten some good (but not great) teams.

they beat arkansas (who just beat florida). beat wyoming (who was ranked in the AVCA poll just last week). beat gonzaga (a solid WCC team this year). beat missouri state (a solid MVC team, who also just beat wichita st, a common opponent of hawaii). also beat kansas st.

but yes, no real signature win yet. they’ve just played an excellent RPI schedule. big test is texas, but that match doesn’t happen until later this month.

  16. Vbfan001 October 5, 2015 11:21 am

12- I thought the nonconference schedule was tough enough. It’s playing those bad Big West teams that really hurt the RPI. Just look at CSUN, top 50 in RPI last year, now sub 200.

I don’t know if they will go on road trip in the preseason anytime soon. That’s a lot of revenue from ticket sales they would be giving up by having fewer home games. That’s very important for a penny pinching athletic department.

  17. OrbitalRipZ October 5, 2015 11:24 am

For the last several years, participants on Cindy’s blog have been praising Team Shoji for finally understanding how to manipulate the non-conference scheduling to strengthen the team’s RPI.

Yet when almost everyone on this blog looked at this year’s non-conference schedule, scratching of the heads began and questioning WHY? started.

Sure we played two top 25 teams — one from the Pac-10 and the other from SEC — but twice Cal State Bakersfield? But to say there’s nothing that can be done about the NCAA RPI is incorrect. Na Wahine can answer it by sweeping match after match after match. Sure the Bows will be snubbed again come Selection Sunday and probably be sent to Galen Center (USC) or Alaska Airlines Arena (Washington). What matters is RESPECT, and right now and with this first RPI ranking of the season, the Rainbows do NOT have any national respect. Look at the teams ahead of the Bows in RPI. No respect at all!

HAPPY HOMECOMING WEEKEND RAINBOW WAHINE VOLLEYBALL TEAM and DITTO WARRIOR FOOTBALL TEAM!

  18. nomu October 5, 2015 11:25 am

Just focus on getting better each week, obviously winning, and let’s see what happens by the end of the season.

  19. Maverick October 5, 2015 11:30 am

    17. Respect is a human emotion, and you won’t get that from a mathematical formula like the RPI. Given that UH is ranked 8th in the human poll, I think the team has plenty of national respect, despite its weak schedule.

  20. Not an Expert October 5, 2015 11:31 am

Why have 2 players move. Taylor is better on the right and has played the right a lot more. Mitchem should be given reps at the left. Should this happen and Mitchem can handle the left look for a more dynamic hitting and blocking team when Greely comes back. Shoji if willing to experiment with keeping Mitchem at the left and a taller setter may bring a big surprise to the upside and elevate the Wahine to a top 4 team.

  21. warriorfan October 5, 2015 11:33 am

    16. It would just be two missed games, and they did it before in 2013 and it helped get them a seed even with some disappointing losses in conference.

  22. warriorfan October 5, 2015 11:34 am

I’d keep Nikki on the right, her block is huge, she averages more blocks than most middles blockers.

  23. kalihifc October 5, 2015 11:35 am

Because a lot of teams don’t want to come here, a tougher preseason schedule probably means Na Wahine traveling at least one weekend. And if they did, the tournament would have to be really good. (I don’t remember how much they benefited from going to the Wichita State tournament a few years ago. Cindy?) And they would have to win. I don’t know how interested Coach Shoji is in traveling during preseason in the first place, but I don’t think the fans would like it — and, considering the expense/loss of revenue, probably the AD, too.

  24. Bleachercoach October 5, 2015 11:41 am

Like H -man, “just keep on winning”…I rather be disrespected and humbled now, but exhalted in December
than worrying about being snubbed year in year out due to our RPI or ranking. Nothing new under the sun! If we are really that good and deserving we will win anywhere! (although we have the #1 crowds in the entire U.S.)

  25. Maverick October 5, 2015 11:53 am

I am a big fan of pre-season travel for UH. One of the big knocks against UH is that its big wins come at home. To answer kalihifc’s question, here is more info about the three teams UH beat in 2013 at Wichita State’s tournament:

Creighton, 23-9, 18th RPI, lost in finals of Big East tourney, advanced to NCAA second round
Wichita St., 31-8, 38th RPI, won MVC tourney, went to NCAA first round
    South Dakota, 19-13, 130th RPI, no post-season

I think away wins against two top-50 RPI teams made an impression on the committee. And having high RPI teams in its schedule helped UH’s RPI. So IMHO, very beneficial for UH to go to Wichita St. and win all 3 matches.

  26. Cubicle1126 October 5, 2015 11:55 am

hawaii is now ranked #8 in the AVCA’ poll based on the strength of a win against a diminishing florida team. and hawaii remains ahead of the one team that beat them (ucla). in part, hawaii’s movement in the AVCA’ poll is based on the dynamics of how a coaches’ poll works (like moving up, because teams above you have lost) … but still though, that’s plenty of “national respect” … imo.

respect from the coaches is one thing … “respect” from the selection committee is something else entirely. and even then, selection and seeding is based on “criteria” given to the committee by the NCAA, regardless of how flawed they may be…

  27. warriorfan October 5, 2015 12:11 pm

    25. I’m with you I think going to Wichita again next year would be great, or maybe Coach Shoji can get something worked out with coach Wong at Pepperdine and have them come here for two matches. Or what about scheduling an out of conference match with a good team, during the league road trips, like Stanford or Pacific, during the davis trip or USC or San Diego on the Riverside/fullerton trip.

Losing a little revenue shouldn’t be their concern , womens basketball loses way more and they manage to go on road trips in preseason every year.

  28. Maverick October 5, 2015 12:14 pm

    27. The OCSports team said that the Wichita St. coach wanted to be invited back to the islands in two years because he believes his team will be very good. Why not do a home-and-home like football does. UH goes to WSU next year, and then WSU comes to UH the following year?

  29. T103 October 5, 2015 12:15 pm

Is anyone surprised by this? The dis-respect has happened before, year after year, so save all your emotions for a greater cause? UH has always been given the short end of the stick, and the only thing the ladies can do, is keep on improving and winning. It’s all G, given all the circumstances that we can’t control, I.E. traveling pre-season, other teams loosing or winning who shouldn’t be loosing or winning, doesn’t matter about them, we just gottah do what we gottah do! Lets stop flying around all this negativity, show the lades and the program choke love! GO BOWS!!!

  30. warriorfan October 5, 2015 12:16 pm

I think coach should do home and homes with top teams only honestly. Like Nebraska. Seriously would love them to come to the islands in a real match.

and as far as Wichita, I would only go there if they guarantee another really good opponent like Creighton in 2013.

  31. Cubicle1126 October 5, 2015 12:18 pm

i think the road matches in 2013 helped hawaii’s seeding chances. but more than that, hawaii just had a good showing against teams in the RPI top 25 and top 50. in 2013, i believe that heading into the tournament, hawaii had an RPI of 17, and a 3-1 record against the RPI top 25, and a 6-2 record against the RPI top 50. that’s the kind of nitty gritty that the committee will reward with a seed.

the challenge though, as you know, is to schedule those types of teams, and then have a winning record against them. right now, hawaii is 1-1 against the RPI top 25 (win over florida, loss to ucla). and hawaii is 2-1 against the RPI top 50 (win over iowa, who may drop as they start to compile losses in the Big-10).

and that’s it… hawaii just doesn’t have a schedule this year that does them any favors for seeding purposes. every now and then that happens… hawaii doesn’t play anyone else in the top 25 of the RPI the rest of the season. top 50 RPI teams are possible but a stretch at this point (long beach st and cal poly have RPIs in the 60s).

so the way it stands … hawaii will be unseeded. and will make whatever seeded team (probably a Pac-12 team) it faces in the subregional VERY nervous.

  32. warriorfan October 5, 2015 12:23 pm

    31. Agreed I don’t think USC, UW, ASU or UCLA if they get seeded wants anything to do with UH in the second round. Same with Arizona who will make a dangerous opponent in the second round for a non pac 12 seeed team.

  33. warriorfan October 5, 2015 12:27 pm

If I had my choice UH would get sent to UCLA so they can get revenge, but it’s very possible UCLA will play it’s way out of a seed.

So would prefer ASU, honestly they look a little over rated to me.

  34. OrbitalRipZ October 5, 2015 1:00 pm

    17. Agree that respect is a human emotion but disagree that “you won’t get that (i.e. respect) from a mathematical formula like the RPI.” The Ratings Percentage Index automatically bestows respect on its highest rated teams. Teams that may not be ranked in the AVCA Top 25 are suddenly given respect nationally if they have worthy RPI.

I stand by what I said: “What matters is RESPECT, and right now and with this first RPI ranking of the season, the Rainbows do NOT have any national respect.”

True, they are #9 in the national AVCA Coaches’ Poll. But that means little, and from the day the RPI is released, the AVCA Poll loses its Midas touch and the RPI becomes almost all powerful.

A team may not be ranked in the AVCA Poll but gains instant national respect by being in the Top 25 of the RPI. Like it or not, the RPI bestows respect. And at the same time, the RPI takes away respect. Nationally, just look what they are saying on VT. It’s as if the AVCA Poll doesn’t even exist anymore. Stats win out any day.

Having said that, we are reminded over and over again by the NCAA Selection Committee that the RPI is only 1 of the tools they use to select and seed. Presumably, the AVCA Poll is another of the tools available to them to use if they so choose.

    #24 100% agree

    GO BOWS!

  35. AlexM October 5, 2015 1:04 pm

It’s too late to do anything about the RPI now. Even if they win out, there’s no guarantees of hosting. The team needs to focus on improving, becoming a good road team and hope they get sent to a favorable region.

Regardless of where Annie plays (left, right or middle), I think she needs to be ready just in case Greeley’s knee will be a chronic problem this season. She already has had ankle and shoulder issues, so she may not be 100% for the rest of the year. I hope Higgins is not out too long. If Koelsch is sick or injured, we could be in trouble without Higgins as backup.

  36. setaone October 5, 2015 1:07 pm

Maverick….thanks for all the RPI insight. Did you mention a bonus for wins over top 50 teams? How is that calculated? Does the opponent need to be top 50 at the time of the match?

  37. Tipshot October 5, 2015 1:23 pm

I’m surprised that people are still hanging on to hope that Hawaii will be seeded come tournament time. Hawaii has an RPI of 36 right now and still has to go through the rest if the RPI draining conference schedule (playing Riverside and Fullerton again!) and many of the teams they have already played are expected to lose a lot more in their conferences (Ore. St. CSUB, Iowa, etc.) There’s just too much to make up to get to within seeding potential and I don’t see how it would happen.

I think it’s a given that Hawaii will not host this year which sucks since they will be on the road for the last month of the season and then again for the post-season. I’m just hoping that they get sent somewhere besides the ususal USC or Washington.

  38. kimo browner October 5, 2015 1:42 pm

What is, is. Move on. NCAA selection Comm. always gets their way. Im not convinced Hawaii will will not host a sub regional anyway, regardless of the RPI…we shall see.
If Shoji plays his best wahine, Hawaii has great potential to win on the road. But he must reshuffle. Go with the big block up front. That creates problems. I like the idea of Mitchem being moved into the OH/MB mix by coach. That is huge given Shoji’s conservative nature. Mitchem will play more. She is the real deal. Who cares what side. Shoji has a keen sense and he is in survival mode. He is prolly thinking it is easier for Nikki to adjust than Mitchem at this point. Moreover, we need our best on the court and he under utilizes his available talent in reserve. Ill take it. Time is NOW to make a move in conference play. Like to see more of Casey Castillo too. Truth be told these injuries have a silver lining. Non of the injuries are serious IMO. Both Tayler and Kalei will be back. Sooner than later. But, it forces Shoji to coach and juggle. My God, he is gifted with talent. Use it!

  39. Cubicle1126 October 5, 2015 1:43 pm

orbital — i don’t see how the shifting of the discussion on VT from the avca poll to the RPI has anything to do with the respect supposedly being given to the RPI. much of the discussion are (1) questions by those unfamiliar with how the RPI works, and (2) knowledgeable posters discrediting/criticizing the RPI…

how much “respect” are they giving the RPI, if they don’t have a clue how it works … or disagree with its use and application in the selection process?

they’re not talking about the RPI to afford it “respect” … they’re talking about it because, like or not, it’s what the NCAA has decided will be used for selection and seeding. that’s not “respect” … that’s simply acknowledging the cards we’ve been dealt.

  40. warriorfan October 5, 2015 1:57 pm

    37. I agree I Don’t see how the wahine’s rpi will improve much beyond the mid twenties. Like I mentioned it will take generosity by the committee to get them seeded, which they rarely show to Hawaii.

Oregon State had a good season last year but it was probably not wise to schedule them, they were bound to go back to the bottom of the league , same with Iowa who will probably always be a bottom dweller in the B1G. and It sucks cause Florida and UCLA have top 5 rpi rankings but the rest of the schedule really let the wahine down.

I think UH just needs to play one tournament on the road each year. Yes they will lose revenue but it will pay off with a seed in the tournament and a better chance to go to the sweet sixteen. Wahine soccer, softball and softball all go on the read in pre season. They don’t make revenue but I’m sure it’s not cheap for them to travel either.

  41. warriorfan October 5, 2015 2:05 pm

Of course it’s not just about playing out of conference opponents on the road, they need to play GOOD out of conference opponents who have a history of being top 40/30 rpi teams.

  42. AlexM October 5, 2015 2:19 pm

    11. “for the curious who asked earlier Kahakai is the No. 3 setter but could not change to that position during a set where she was the libero.”

I wonder if Dave will play it safe against LBS/CSUN and use Claire-Marie at libero just in case Kahakai is needed to replace Koelsch if she is injured. And, if Kahakai is the libero when Koelsch is setting, would Claire-Marie be the 3rd setter in this situation? Against CSF and UCR it wouldn’t be a problem, but LBS/CSUN are much better teams.

  43. Maverick October 5, 2015 2:21 pm

    34. People bestow respect, not formulae. If a person decides to bestow respect because of the RPI, that is his/her choice. But clearly not everyone does, including me, Cindy, and others on this blog. And if stats won out any day, the RPI wouldn’t be used, it would be replaced by a model that more accurately reflects and predicts team performance.

    39. Exactly.

  44. Maverick October 5, 2015 2:37 pm

    36. Credit for finding the bonus point info goes to AdmrVT. Go to the Volleyshots thread entitled, “Tues: Top 25 scores” dated 9/29, post #6. The source material for that post is below.

For more info, go to page 14 of the following:
    http://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/2015DIWVB_Prechamps_Manual_20150929.pdf

Interestingly, the AVCA poll is not a criterium available to the seeding committee (pages 14-15). If this remains, then UH probably won’t be seeded, IMO.

  45. Ron October 5, 2015 2:42 pm

It sounds like the fans on this blog would like to see something creative regarding the use of Mitchem. Put Magill on the left to be subbed out in the back row. She likes high sets that give her a chance to look at the defense and she has the hops and the “hang time” to modify where she hits it. She would be hard to stop with the right set. Just an idea probably not new and probably not do-able.

  46. kimo browner October 5, 2015 3:04 pm

@45. When a team has an abundance of talent like Hawaii, creative thinking should be an operative word, not wishful thinking.

  47. Shar October 5, 2015 3:17 pm

Changing the subject a lot but I was just (finally!) penciling in the games to my planner and feel “unsatisfied” with the schedule. It is feast or famine. I can’t think how this schedule is conducive to our athletes academic classes. I don’t want them to receive special treatment because they are athletes but wow! They are missing so much school. I hope their profs give them some leeway.

  48. Cindy Luis October 5, 2015 3:42 pm

far too many things to respond to but here’s a few.
Don’t remember the ‘praising of Shoji finally getting it when it comes to scheduling.’ he gets who he can get and hopes that the opponents have a good season. when you schedule 2-3 years out, you just don’t know.
Florida has lost its last 3 but still at No. 5 in the RPI.

As for moving people around, Shoji said today that playing left is harder than playing right and since Taylor has played in left in some rotations already, makes more since for her to move there.

    42. one option is to go without a libero and alternate Kahakai and Anderson at DS. but that would mean Koelsch is out too.

    44. yep, thought that the poll was going to be considered this year. apparently night. RPI used with the committee able to seed on geography and take into consideration good wins bad losses and head-to-head.

    45. Magill has never played OH so way too late to think about that move.

    47. Teams take academic advisors on the road on long trips. So much is done online these days that missing class ins’t a big deal except for those like Anderson who have several labs.
The week they are at LBS and CSUN, they miss two days then come back for over a week. The two weeks they play four in seven days, they miss one day one week and
    the entire following week.

Those are some horrible ratings for the BWC.

UH has to also hope that LBSU and Cal Poly win all their remaining games (aside from UH of course), which will bring up their ratings.

Interesting to hear that Shoji may have Mitchem hit outside if Kalei is out this weekend. I assume that coaches will first start Granato and/or Castillo at Kalei’s position – and have Annie as an available option, if needed.

In our current passing scheme, Kalei has serious back court receiving/passing duties while Nikki as OP, has minimal receiving/passing duties. Since Nikki is the more experienced D1 passer/receiver, it makes sense to move Nikki to LOH to take on the passing load and put Annie at OP as a way to gradually slide her into D1 back court duties. It’s a switch with interesting trade-offs.

For some reason, I am not real concerned about where this team gets sent this year. I have accepted the fact that the chances of them ever hosting is maybe a 1 out of 10 year possibility, maybe even that is iffy. Unless they are selected to host a regional, I would not expect the NCAA to give Hawaii a top 16 seed. It’s disgusting, but reality now days.

But this team…this team, I feel can beat anybody this year. Anybody, anywhere. I am going to have that feeling next year as well. This is a very solid core we have the next 2 years. And if everyone stays healthy, big IF, these next 2 years will be fun to watch this team. I think Dave will stick it out these next 2 years. I think 2016 will be his final year. I cannot say for sure, but I betcha any much he promised Nikki and Tayler that he will be here for their 4 years.

To the NCAA and RPI…I say BRING IT ON!!!

  54. haleiwacrossfitter October 5, 2015 4:49 pm

And….I don’t think Nikki should be switched to the left. Let Annie get the swings out there. Nikki is tooooooo good on the right. Probably the best Opp in the country. We would miss her there tremendously, I think.

  55. Volleyman October 5, 2015 5:50 pm

Wow Hawaii is #1 in the nation in blocks with 3.27 blocks

  56. z October 5, 2015 5:51 pm

Agree with 54. I really like Nikki on the right. Probaby the best right side terminator I have seen at UH. I don’t want her taking Hartong swings on the left. I don’t want to wear her out. Digging balls will take a toll on her.

  57. Ron October 5, 2015 6:26 pm

Concur with Crossfitter and Z. Keep the best Rt. side in the country on the Rt. Let Annie prove she is the player we think she is on the left. It has only taken her a few games to get up to speed in the middle so let this wahine play!

  58. rapid October 5, 2015 6:59 pm

    45. “…and probably not do-able.”

    😀

too much complaining and bitchin about rpi. ok so what do you think na wahine would have, had they been undefeated (ie had beaten ucla in 5)?

its time to ditch away with the fan ‘volleyball iq’ that sounds ridiculous in the first place anyways. its about talent. and na wahine dont need to be chillin and falling asleep at home for the fans. it is time they go out on an all out siege, rise of na wahine right? be the dark horse and bring sc, u-dub, and even penn st to their knees!

  59. rapid October 5, 2015 7:10 pm

    55. aint that remarkable? 2 years ago outblocked off the court, last year supposively ‘outblocked off the court’ and now the number 1 armored team in the nation. or so it seems for now…

all kidding aside, let na wahine go raze every opponents homecourt found. guided by “the all-around prowess of opposite standout Nikki Taylor” and rise of na wahine “up for the challenge!”

  60. darkfire October 5, 2015 7:24 pm

.53, 100% agreement. I have the same feeling too that 2016 will be Dave’s last year. By that time, he’ll have the 3 seniors, Nikki, Tayler & Annie complimented with Kalei, Mags, Castillo, Granato. I’d like to see them put Burns on the OH because we’ll have 3 MH. Of course, the rotation of Tayler & Koelsch seems to work pretty good for serving & blocking situations. Clare-Marie & Kahakai will be soooo solid. As someone has said earlier in these blogs, this may not be the year we make it into the finals, but next year may definitely be it. Although I’ve only been home 6 years, I’ve never seen the team this deep and this talented. What a way to end a career for Dave Shoji, an NCAA championship! GO BOWS!

  61. Cindy Luis October 5, 2015 7:26 pm

How about wait and see. All I said was Shoji said he may do that.

  62. darkfire October 5, 2015 7:27 pm

    Aloha Cindy,

    Any update on Burn’s condition?

    Mahalo!

  63. nomu October 5, 2015 7:28 pm

After wrestling with the RPI for so long, maybe we are placing too much stock in something that deserves less attention in the bigger scheme of things. Imo, it provides the NCAA a somewhat workable framework or something “tangible” to “start with”.
