Back to the lab

Well, that was rough.

We can all agree that the Warriors’ first three road games were expected to be difficult, although few imagined it would be 55-0 difficult.

But stuff happens. It was one of those nights when everything went wrong.

So, what’s next?

For UH supporters, if there’s any consolation, the hard part is over. The Warriors now need to get healthy, regain their confidence and, well, win. At 2-3, the Warriors are where many expected at this point. What happens the rest of the way is up to them.

Keep trying. There’s still a season!

  2. pakegolf October 4, 2015 4:24 am

Still think back to back road games is a recipe for failure. Hopefully the team will dig deep and come back charging!

  3. Arcumfortis October 4, 2015 4:35 am

Yes 2-3 was expected (as probably the best case scenario with 1-4 a reasonable possibility). But, in the fourth year of the Chow era it’s hard to imagine that there will be a turning point ahead. Our offensive production has been shockingly bad. I actually could not have imagined it would be as poor as it has been so far. So yes, there are 8 games left and we still have a chance for a decent season. But, for the few fans left, does it have to be this painful for so long? Probably the most interesting and inspiring move UH could make would be to announce that coach Chow will be replaced. This should be done the moment we no longer are bowl eligible. There is little consolation in knowing our remaining opponents do not have winning records. I remember a time when we looked forward to testing ourselves against winning programs not consoling ourselves with the opportunity to defeat opponents that may be almost as bad as us.

GOOD MORNING, WARRIORS! I have really watch the game last night. It was really seriously honestly sick to watch the University of Hawaii football team get they’re butt kick really bad!. What made it worst that? They show coach Chow really upset on the sidelines. It’s shows that it’s will be his last year at UH!. If that happened? I really seriously like to see what the new AD will hired for the new head coach at the University of Hawaii football program?!. I’ve just brought tickets for the game in Las Vegas!. I really seriously don’t know should, I sale it online or still go to the game?. Because, I really don’t want to see the University of Hawaii Warriors get they butt kick again!. Peoples over here already saying that? UNLV will kick Hawaii ass really seriously bad!. They’re saying the final score will be UNLV 80 and HAWAII 0!. I really that never happened at all or, I promise you that? I will never go to any Hawaii football game again! Because the best time ever happen?. When UH had Colts Brennan at quarterback and beaten UNLV at Las Vegas!. It’s shows how great the Hawaii football program was then!. But, I they start getting better the next game now on!. Because, I really know some fans are getting piss off or upset with the team!

Make sure your grandkids never watch Michael Moore’s “Roger & Me” because the viewer actually sees a rabbit being killed on-screen. The documentarian approaches a Flint woman who advertises roadside: “Rabbits: Pets or Meat”.

  6. H-Man October 4, 2015 6:48 am

I want to say something witty; something smart; something positive; something encouraging, but yesterday’s lass wax really hard to swallow. There’s still eight more games to play. I am just praying the team plays competitively. That’s all. Then it’s time to make a head coaching change.

  7. Old School Dave October 4, 2015 6:57 am

Just a thought in between the continued venting after going 2-3 and why we need to fire Chow and hire Rolovich, Miano, Jones, the Lee brothers, Mouse Davis, Rod York, etc. Well, maybe Boise State is that good. Like the article said, the Broncos could be moving to a Power-5 conference in the near future as they have developed and surpassed the other MWC teams. That’s the reality of the situation. Better players, better paid coaches (their position coaches earn more than UH’s coordinators), better facilities, better fan and financial support, a philosophy that players and fans believe in, and a cheap cost of living all add up and have pushed them to that point. I still remember them when they dominated the Big Sky back when.

Don’t forget that Boise State beat UH when we had the offensive mastermind coaching here in 2004, 69-3.

Hope that the injured players can get well and return to the field soon. Will still support and root for UH against SDSU.

  8. kev-1 October 4, 2015 6:57 am

For all of you that agree with the “well the hard part is over” mentality, ask yourself if you really believe that is the right mentality to have.

This is year four. All of the hype has been just hype. The offense is still the same old story. The defense is starting to show that they are inconsistent with good players in spots. The coaching stinks.

It is the mentality mentioned above that is the problem. You know that Chow himself probably expected to only have one win at this point, and is probably shocked to have two. I don’t want that to be what is expected.

  9. kev-1 October 4, 2015 7:00 am

We should not be satisfied by getting blown out week after week, squeaking by an FCS team (be real with yourself, that wasn’t a dominant performance), and not looking like we even belong on the same field as a conference opponent.

  10. kev-1 October 4, 2015 7:01 am

Start over already. Fire Chow Now!

  11. kev-1 October 4, 2015 7:05 am

By the way, I like how the post says that things are looking up for UH supporters. Somehow, anyone dissatisfied with the product that has been put on the field is not a UH supporter?

  12. Willie October 4, 2015 7:32 am

With the hard part of the schedule pau, are we finally going to see the rest of the 75 touchdowns that was projected by the offense?

  13. Willie October 4, 2015 7:35 am

Have you folks seen the Spartans and the Rebels play this year yet? These two games upcoming against SJSU and UNLV that many penciled in as “W’s” for the Warriors look like real dog fights to the end.

  14. Old School Dave October 4, 2015 7:38 am

I hope so, Willie. No one is happy. The team and coaches need to get to work to turn this around with 8 more games on the schedule. UH doesn’t have the athletes that BSU has. The Broncos are getting better athletes, now (3 and some 4-star players). QB Brett Rypien was a 4-star player out of Spokane, WA. Very impressed with his performance and poise. UH needs to make the best of what they have and play above their ability, I think.

Hope that Wittek, Pedroza, Kemp, and Ewaliko can heal up and be ready to play, soon. They need to regroup and beat SDSU this week. No byes to heal up.

  15. Come on, Man! October 4, 2015 8:08 am

stop bringing up the 2004 boise state game where UH lost 69-3. there’s no comparison. games don’t exist in a vacuum. at the time, UH was well into june jones’s tenure as head coach and was well established as a pretty good mid major program with a solid offense and could almost always be penciled in for the hawaii bowl. the boise team that year went undefeated and entered their bowl game against #8 louisville as the 10th ranked team in the nation and lost a very close game.

that boise state team was EXTREMELY good. much better, comparatively speaking, than the boise team that UH played yesterday.

UH also had chad owens, britton komine, and a whole corps of wide receivers who played extremely well throughout the season (and none of them blue chip five star high school recruits) and a Timmy Chang who spent most of the season throwing to the guys in the right color jerseys (38 tds 13 int). like all the june jones teams, that team had a solid offensive identity, did what they did well, and executed. it just so happened that year, when they played at boise, they ran into a top 10 team that was better than them.

June Jones led teams had some down years, but overall, they were a solid mid major team, put points on the board, and were consistently winners. there was no talk like “well. i mean, i know we haven’t scored a td since UC Davis, but if you look at our conference schedule, the other teams are so TERRIBLE, we have a chance to at least win some of them!”

so no. i don’t think there’s a good comparison between boise vs hawaii 2004 and boise vs hawaii in 2015.

  16. Bryson October 4, 2015 8:08 am

While 2-3 was to be expected at this point what wasn’t expected was being shutout in those 3 losses…our offense has looked horrible very little to no execution these coaches are gonna have to open up the position contest at every wr position not 1 wr has been consistent in catching the ball which tells me there is a problem with the fundamental aspect of looking the ball in and catching it…the WR coach has to go this has been one of the most under performing units for the past 3 years…enough is enough

  17. 3-Prong October 4, 2015 8:15 am

That swelling on Wittek’s knee looked pretty bad. I’ll be surprised if he gets the start next week. I think Ikaika is going to be the best option with his mobility.

    Go Bows…

  18. Markazulu October 4, 2015 8:20 am

I’m actually really surprise how horrible the wr/qb connection with either over throws, under throws, drop passes, miscommunication on routes it’s quite alarming… the most alarming for me is the blocking in the backfield.

  19. LizKauai October 4, 2015 8:24 am

I haven’t seen the game yet, but in general, I’m over anything that endangers young lives with brain damage and other avoidable life damages
    Life is precious.
    God Bless.

  20. el burro sabio October 4, 2015 8:27 am

The team that gave up 69 to Boise and 70 to Fresno also went to a bowl game, not that it matters now.
I disagree with the fire him now thought. A win is a win, a loss is a loss, and a 2-3 record is the best that most anyone thought it would be at this point. IMHO about the end of October should be the line in the sand to make a decision either way. If the decision is to let him go, it’s a head start on finding a new coach and a change in direction in recruiting if needed.

  21. Rodney October 4, 2015 8:32 am

Boys played hard but Didnt execute.
    Lets win one next week.!!!
    Go warriors!!

  22. Bryson October 4, 2015 8:33 am

Re 20: The fire him now opinion isn’t being based on 1 game though it’s being based on his body of work thus far which has been horrible…In comparison JJ had a much better looking body of work and had earned the faith that the fans put in him…there’s a huge difference between the 2…if you ask me till this day I still think Coach Mack was given a raw deal even his body of work looked much better than Chow’s…You can feel the lack of excitement in the stadium during home games trust me when I saw this is probably the worst it’s been since the Von Appen era…

  23. Old School Dave October 4, 2015 8:36 am

Burn that game film. Heal up!! Need to focus on SDSU. Go Warriors!!

  24. Da Punchbowl Kid October 4, 2015 8:36 am

Points, not Pukas. The real test is coming up.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  25. Old School Dave October 4, 2015 8:43 am

Yes, the 2004 team got smashed by BSU and FSU, but they still went to the bowl game. Boise Stae was just that good. With 8 more games, UH still has a chance to go a bowl game, too. Sadly, there are those who wish for UH to have nothing but games like yesterday’s against BSU (hoped for such scores against Ohio State and Wisconsin), just to get a new coach. Just saying.

  26. Come on, Man! October 4, 2015 8:51 am

You know, this “the only thing that matters is conference play” seems to be a pretty new thing. I don’t remember people saying this before norm chow drove this program off a cliff. but i guess at a certain point, in order to rationalize a team’s lack of success, you gotta shift the goal posts as to what “success” actually means.

The expectations went from “have a winning record and make the hawaii bowl. bonus points if you crack the national rankings!” to “i’ll take four wins. hell, i’ll take a completed 5 yard slant pass and a made field goal.” we went from “be competitive and steal some games from BCS schools (especially ranked ones!)” to “the only thing that matters is conference play.”

  27. kev-1 October 4, 2015 8:54 am

22… the problem with Coach Mack was how much he was getting paid. He rolled JJ’s success into a fat deal for himself.

  28. Come on, Man! October 4, 2015 8:55 am

“Sadly, there are those who wish for UH to have nothing but games like yesterday’s against BSU (hoped for such scores against Ohio State and Wisconsin), just to get a new coach. Just saying.”

probably because at this point, they feel the status quo is unacceptable.

  29. D-Bone October 4, 2015 9:11 am

It’s true the Warriors were definitely not at their best or full strength last night. Boise possesses a great deal of talent and it was on display albeit against a worn down, injured, and Jet-lagged Warrior team. The poor defense has been on the field the entire season, it’s time for the offense to muster some pride and step-up. Their performance has been nothing short of preposterous. Hopefully with a home game and even more homecoming on the horizon we can turn this thing around and get back to winning. Defense don’t hang your heads you have nothing to be ashamed of, you can’t do it by yourself…..points win games…..LET’S GO WARRIORS!!!!

  30. WWF October 4, 2015 9:12 am

Last night’s game shows us the difference between a school committed to a football program and one that is mired with political decision-making. Boise has been consistently good through the years, even with Head Coaches leaving for other programs.

The change for the better starts with financial support from the Legislature. The ask from the AD is for $3.5 MM just to break even. It should be twice that to allow UH to begin improving our chances to maintain a winning football program.

  31. Bryson October 4, 2015 9:14 am

Re 27:Who’s fault was that? He went to 2 Hawaii Bowls,Won a share of a WAC championship, beat a ranked team on the road…I can’t blame a guy for getting paid…

  32. st. anthony trojan October 4, 2015 9:25 am

Did we make the bottom 10 ?

  33. Old School Dave October 4, 2015 9:28 am

Hey, Dave Reardon mentioned the 2004 season, too in his column. But, anyway…..

Agree, that no one is happy this morning after yesterday’s game. WWF makes some good points. Just take a walk through Boise’s Football Complex, then walk around UH’s facilities. No excuses, but you can see why they get better athletes, better paid coaches, and has the financial support to win. I don’t think BSU will remain in the MWC for much longer. They are that good and have surpassed the other teams in their current conference.

More serious problem – no more Kim Chi fried rice at Taiyo Ramen for the time being due to the weather 🙁

  34. el burro sabio October 4, 2015 9:31 am

Bryson I agree on the “body of work” but IMHO the time to do it was either last year or in a month, not now. People wanted Mack out, look what happened. People want Chow out, it could always get worse, be careful of what you wish for. Matlin needs to be cool-head and make a good decision.

  35. cocobean October 4, 2015 9:38 am

kev-1. As I recall Hinshaw made Mack an offer he couldn’t refuse.

  36. Arcumfortis October 4, 2015 9:58 am

Our home game against San Diego State at Aloha this coming Saturday is pivotal in my opinion. San Diego State is more of a peer to us than Boise and we are playing them at home. Of course we are a beaten up and now probably demoralized team. But the HC job is to reinspire his team and have them ready. There can be no excuses for this game.

If we lose, I think coach Chow should do the noble thing and announce that this will be his last year of coaching. That he will apply himself to developing a smooth succession plan to minimize the impact on recruiting and try to contribute to the future success of the program.

Coach Chow has exemplified an orentation of persistence and determination. There comes a point where persistence and determination become stubbornness born out of a need to feed ones ego without considering the needs of others (in this case the program). It would be sad for a man at coach Chows age and after an esteemed career to get the bum’s rush out of the door. I had wished for coach Chow’s success. At this stage this looks quite improbable.

Coach Chow has preached responsibility and mature behavior to his players. It is now time for him to be mature and find a dignified way to support the future of program that has languished under his watch. I feel that the best way he can do this is to prepare the program for his departure. If he can do this (in the way I suggest or in another way) I will feel grateful and inspired by his humble maturity. If he cannot, from my perspective, he will go down as a person of limited maturity who talks a much better story than he walks. I wish him the best but my best wishes for him do not supersede my wishes for the program and its ongoing viability, at a very difficult juncture in its history.

  37. Inyoface October 4, 2015 10:01 am

Even though we’ve had the toughest first 5 games(even with UC Davis) in the nation, being outscored 121 to zero on the mainland is a hard pill to swallow.

  38. sfogate October 4, 2015 10:02 am

When you continue to play the same players; QB and WR, and expect something better, then UH has a problem. Time to make some changes and see what might happen.

  39. A-House October 4, 2015 10:06 am

I was taken aback by the creative offensive calls and execution by Boise yesterday and wondered silently if UH will ever see/use such creativity at any point in the future – only if the Boise coaching staff is hired intact and that would not happen in a million years! To see their stable of RBs slashing through the D; the WRs racing past the DBs; their OL and DL controlling the LOS.

Much credit to Boise’s coaching staff!!

If what we have seen, offensively, the first 5 games, continues I have to question if Bailey used the same offensive strategy/plays at Idaho State – if so, we are doomed to see a very “ho-hum” offensive strategy the rest of 2015. So simple, so mundane, so predictable, and on and on and on. Seems Chow never left!!!

Although we will continue to support the team, it will be most difficult to watch – totally hum-drum.

  40. Rodney October 4, 2015 10:14 am

    Go Warriors beat Aztecs
    Hawaii 31 SDS 28

  41. Eddie Man October 4, 2015 10:14 am

Next week Iʻm going to the game with a large sign with my Christmas wish come true:
    “Norm Chow all Pau”

  42. Markazulu October 4, 2015 10:18 am

I think everyone is surprised we lost but it’s how we lost that’s rubbed everyone wrong. Offense has practically been non existent. It’s not just scoring we can’t get first downs. I think bobby curran said yesterday in the 2nd quarter they have more tds than we have first downs.

  43. eMpTy October 4, 2015 10:20 am

The most glaring thing that I noticed was that the receivers need to learn to catch the ball with their hands. Catching the ball with their bodies leads to balls bouncing up into the air if they miss the ball. Makes it easy to intercept. Just my two cents.

  44. Casual Observer October 4, 2015 10:20 am

What’s frustrating is that we can’t score points…on the mainland…against good defenses. We hear about the small windows against the good defenses but how come Boise receivers are so wide open when they catch the ball? Our receivers are good athletes but don’t expect them to be superhuman to catch balls when defenders are crashing into them. And if Boise can run trick plays or execute plays that make sense, why can’t we? One problem may be that the Bows O is too plain and predictable. Having vented, what’s the difference between a 1 pt loss and a 55 pt blow out? Only pride.

  45. Manoa Mist October 4, 2015 10:39 am

C’mon man five games into the season and the QB and receivers still ain’t on the same page? Boise completely outcoached us, they knew what routes would be run and they consistently jumped them.
Chow’s “I ain’t making excuses but Wittek couldn’t plant his foot” BS is tired and conduct unbecoming. Coach you been making excuses for four years now and that’s why we 10-32.
And where’s the 75 touchdowns they was bragging about? Talk is cheap my friends, cheap.
Our boys deserve better than this. If we lose, we lose, but we look like we should be in the ILH not DI. And no excuses, Boise is in our league and they took us apart like we one Pop Warner team.

  46. H-Man October 4, 2015 10:56 am

Okay, the jury is still out. There are 8 more games. But there was so much talk about being patient and said it’s a rebuilding program. It’s now into the fourth year and all the players are Chow’s. And it’s not about the losses. These were expected. But it’s about the lack of offensive production. This was supposed to be the “line that Chow built.” I believed this line could produce a very effective running game. More so when the two JC running backs made it to camp. I thought,” look out MWC West Division,” we’re going to run on you! And, we have Max. But the offensive output is low. Anemic. The offense looks discombobulated, confused. Penalties are up. Unable to establish an effective running game. Porous. Max doesn’t have enough time in the pocket. Receivers always seem to be covered. QB seemed to be running for his life too often. Now hurt. Now this is the 4th year in the rebuilding program. I expected more; much more. So if I am frustrated, I should be. Patience is running thin. So okay, let’s see what happens in the San Diego St. game. But if things don’t improve….

  47. hitmanhart October 4, 2015 11:24 am

aloha everyone !! wow this was a hard game to watch !! talk about getting cracks !! coaching make this team UH team look so bad !! UH been put high school number all year !! running back gave up a free sack again by missing his block !! we got a qb that cant move and he locks in on who he going too !! but out of all this i question why no bo at qb yet this the type game to if he has game !! you save him last year for this year !! 3 blow outs and trying these young man out that poor coaching !!
bottom line time for chow to go !! da game has past him by !!

  48. ai-eee-soos October 4, 2015 11:26 am

but last 3 games are at home.

sfogate says it in a nutshell: “When you continue to play the same players; QB and WR, and expect something better, then UH has a problem. Time to make some changes and see what might happen.” They keep saying they have to play as a team. Then let the other players play! There are healthy guys hungry to get in the game and show what they can do. Go Warriors! All of you!!

Year 4: In addition to a grueling 2015 schedule, the Rainbow Warriors have had to adjust to a lot of key coaching changes. From the 2012 – 2015 UH Athletics rosters, Coach Chow’s current staff has a number of returnees, it must be rough with new offensive, defensive, and special teams coaches (and their other coaching roles). The next 7 conference games are the litmus test for Coach Chow’s 4 year laboratory experiment.

    Coaches/Staff…Years (total)…Current Coach Title

this game so hard to watch !! but i watch it to the very end just to see if we can score !! but we played the 2nd half like we had the lead !! run run pass !! then run run pass ,then pass, pass, run !! just try to get da game over with !! why not try the 3rd and 4th qb !! see if we got something there ? this coach chow as no vision or know or how to judge !!

  52. Maddog50 October 4, 2015 11:54 am

Not much you can say. 8 games. Assess the damage physically and mentally. Look over the roster and rethink. Can’t win if you don’t score points. Last night was like more than a few nights. They are 2-3 just as predicted-doesn’t matter how it looked-matters how it will look against SDSU. Players play coaches coach, it’s time to do both-Go Warriors!!!!!

  53. st. anthony trojan October 4, 2015 12:03 pm

No. 171 said it best yesterday…as to the reason maybe…why the
warriors are so dysfunctional…starting with the head coach…

  54. UpIrons October 4, 2015 12:23 pm

That was a big disappointment. As hard as that blue turf was to look at, it was just even harder to watch what they did to the Warriors. Ugh! I sure hope they rest up and get their confidence back quickly. This is a better team than what we’ve seen in the end results of these big games. Still a long season to go and they can win out and redeem themselves after this!

  55. st. anthony trojan October 4, 2015 12:30 pm

Hey Go (china) sorry me give u that link yesterday…
hope neva work 4 you… he he he

  56. makai October 4, 2015 12:31 pm

I’ve been disappointed with our team lately. I wanted to see what Chow could do and he got his chance. So shame to be a UH fan right now.

  57. Markazulu October 4, 2015 12:34 pm

How many times did we already see this season a receiver try to catch the ball and it gets deflected up in the air for a int?

  58. tom-warriornation October 4, 2015 12:51 pm

Start Zhwalen at QB; we need a spark real bad!!!

  59. Cali Warrior October 4, 2015 12:53 pm

Aside from a few brief moments against Ohio State, this team has been absolutely dismal in the three road games this year and really hasn’t looked that good at all – even in victory. Let’s be honest with ourselves. For the most part, the program has been in the gutter since the first snap of the 2008 Sugar Bowl. Have there been any marquee victories? Any big-time recruits? Impressive bowl appearances? How can the boosters stand for this type of disappointment year after year?

  60. Warbow October 4, 2015 1:01 pm

The definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over expecting different results. The slants to the wide-outs and runs up the middle is a prime example. Starting players who consistently drop passes and run the wrong routes another. Once again, it seems our punter will be the MVP of year. Time for Chow to do the honorable thing and announce his retirement for after this season. But I’m sure he won’t because he knows the way UH does things and won’t fire him the correct way and he’ll end up getting millions on some type of law suit. If Matlin doesn’t fire him, then he needs to go also.

  61. Warbow October 4, 2015 1:03 pm

#55 agree 100. Zhwalen was a better prospect coming out of high school than Ripken.

  62. Noio October 4, 2015 1:04 pm

Start Ikaika. That way he doesn’t have to clean up after someone else. And some different receivers. Barker, Bukoski, Pasoquen. At least try something different.

  63. Warbow October 4, 2015 1:06 pm

#58, been there done that. He is not he answer and will only make it worst.

  64. kev-1 October 4, 2015 1:12 pm

I’m not saying he’s to blame. The comment I was responding to said that Mack never really had a shot. My point is that as much as he was making, people expected more. That’s all. I’m not hating on him.

  65. Noio October 4, 2015 1:15 pm

I’m just saying it’s more realistic to start the healthy 2nd string guys instead of injured 1st string.

  66. FCWarrior October 4, 2015 1:33 pm

Replace the starters. I bet there are some hungry players that will excel and have seen what the issues are. The WR’s aren’t performing, perhaps the others will step up to the plate. I keep hearing “hope Kemp, Pedroza, etc” gets better.
This is the 5th game and it’s status quo. Enough

  67. UHfan808 October 4, 2015 1:40 pm

Great morning after Game Day, Tsai-kos!!!

  68. UHfan808 October 4, 2015 1:41 pm

Your entire post is correct, ST!

    Thanks!!!

  69. UHfan808 October 4, 2015 1:42 pm

Well it seems as though last night’s game

became the HUGE fork in the road

    And now the Team

    Just needs to figure out

How to climb out of it

    Mentally

    Spiritually

    Physically

  70. UHfan808 October 4, 2015 1:44 pm

    If they have good coaches

    And they themselves

    Are good ppl

They will be able to figure it out

    And will come out

    On top of the heap

    !

    GO WARRIORS!!! 😀

    That’s what I mean about

    “Figuring it out”

    😀

  71. Willie October 4, 2015 1:48 pm

Went on record early last week that UH chances against Boise were slim and none. Cited a lot of reasons, one main item was that BSU got superior coaching.

This week versus SDSU is going to be closer, a real bar room brawl. Don’t think results will change and Warriors with another conference loss. They have not stopped the run yet and the Aztecs got two thoroughbreds at running back. See a low scoring affair with Aztecs edging the hard trying Warriors 24 to 10. Forget the 75 TD goal, just getting one this week is a wish.

  72. st. anthony trojan October 4, 2015 2:04 pm

Ha Ha… maybe even get one this week be a miracle…

  73. Warrior Dave October 4, 2015 2:30 pm

2-3 is better than I expected at this point. However, the win again5t Colorado raised my expections. I sensed Boise could make the score ugly as their offense is better than OSU and Wisconsin right now.

Injuries need to heal. To all those Wittek haters, Ikaika was 4-14 against Boise reaerves. He didn’t do anything to earn a start or my confidence.

  74. Inyoface October 4, 2015 2:31 pm

People that say “I told you so”or “I have it on record” are either a bs’er or have to prove they were right only when they were right. Who cares!

  75. Arcumfortis October 4, 2015 3:04 pm

69 WD……Agree….the only way Woolsey should start is if Max is injured. I don’t believe we can win with Ikaika. I appreciate his toughness but he is not the passer Max is. I dunno what was with Max’s passes last night and why he was so off. But Max gives us the best chance to win. A pass Ikaika threw to Kemp late in the game is exemplary of his struggle. Kemp ran a good route and was open. By the time Ikaika threw the ball the defender had closed and should have had a pick six. The timing was late in a way that cannot fly in D1 football. If Max is hurt and Ikaika plays I wish him and us the very best. But we better have a better running game than last night or we are toast again. I am really not sure My fandom could survive another offensive shut out. I am actually not sure it can survive another loss. My patience has been long but there is none left.

  76. Arcumfortis October 4, 2015 3:13 pm

70…..agree with you also. Gloating now is a little like gloating when someone who smokes gets cancer……big deal you are right……actually those who want to be right that UH has not had a good football team have been right for years. I hope this rightness makes them happy. I find our continuing struggles frustrating and sad. Sometimes I wonder how possible it is for Hawaii to really compete in football at all anymore. The “mid majors” have become the JV league already and this will not change. The only way out is to be “promoted” to a power 5 conference. I don’t like our chances of this ever. Our travel burden is ridiculous (both the physical and financial part of it) and recruiting has never been easy. That doesn’t mean I am making excuses for coach Chow. He has changed the players and changed the coaches over the past three plus years. There is only one more change that makes sense to me.

  77. nutmegger October 4, 2015 3:30 pm

The announcers on ESPN commented last night about the 40,000 miles that Hawaii will be traveling on their away games this year with the observation that traveling west to east is harder than traveling east to west. I agree that traveling against the sun west to east is much harder to adjust to – leaving Hawaii in the evening and getting to your destination on the mainland the next day.

I know this is only one factor, but many on this blog discussed the benefit of staying on the mainland after the Wisconsin game rather than flying home for 3 days and immediately getting back on the plane to Boise.

The financial burden may be one reason for not doing so, but I think it is a factor that puts UH at a disadvantage. It would be interesting to see what the W-Ls are for the mainland teams on their home game following a trip to play away at Hawaii. I would venture that the Ls exceed the Ws.

How about this as a radical solution – UH make an agreement with a small Western school. Have the entire team relocate to that school for the fall semester. Play “home” games at that school but have K5 air the games (no ppv). Away games would be in the same time zone so little adjustment. Could have Homecoming played at Aloha Stadium. Players and coaches would return to UH for the spring and summer semesters.

This might help in recruiting – mainland players can play in front of families, but have the benefit of going to Hawaii for spring and summer. Local players would have the opportunity to experience a semester every year on the mainland. Coaches families wouldn’t have to be completely uprooted. Travel costs would be lower. If they make it to a bowl, it would be played at Aloha Stadium.

    Pretty crazy idea.

  78. A-House October 4, 2015 3:38 pm

for the sake of the future of UH football:
    1] Chow should resign
2] “acting” coach should look to the “future” and start the Colorado St transfer or Zwahlen – Witek is a senior and Woosley a junior ( move him to a slot receiver )
3] same with the OL/DL with some exceptions such as Kennedy T – just gotta play him an hope he can excite the underclass to step up

bottom line – UH would have a relatively experienced team going into the 2016 season – playing football is not like a union where seniority means everything

why say this? is there really any optimism that Chow will be back for 2016? and don’t give me the “lack of $$$” when upper campus just created a new position that would pay 6-figure salalry

bite the bullet and save the future!!

  79. A-House October 4, 2015 3:48 pm

    nutmegger #73:

“crazy idea” indeed, but I like it provided the “small western school” will offer upper level courses that are transferable to UH – also, the concern for “graduate” players and grad-assistants who are working toward a Masters degree

to circumvent the upper level courses, upper level students can take UH classes on-line to alleviate the above. Exams would be closely monitored. Technology is wonderful, but personally it frustrates me to no end!!!

I will assume that the small school would be a DII level.

  80. Come on, Man! October 4, 2015 3:50 pm

“How about this as a radical solution – UH make an agreement with a small Western school. Have the entire team relocate to that school for the fall semester. ”

practice facilities? training table? and i’m assuming that under this deal, all tuition money and funding for room and board for the fall semester as well as football related revenue, from body bag games, merchandising, bowl game revenues, tv deals and rights, and conference revenues goes straight to this unnamed small school on the west coast, right? also, gotta make sure that every credit that’s offered at this unnamed small school transfers one to one to the UH system.

and if that’s the case, why even have a UH football team?

  81. A-House October 4, 2015 3:51 pm

    #75 continued:

I would accept PPV so us old time season ticket holders can watch all the games – just like buying season tickets.

need to keep the income to sustain the non-revenue sports!

What about Aloha Stadium? Let the authority worry about the lack of use since they raked in all that “rent” money since 1975.

  82. A-House October 4, 2015 3:56 pm

    #76:

no, only a % of gate receipts would go to the unnamed school – perhaps even a D1 school without a football program could work

“out of the box” is better than sitting in small box without hope

  83. A-House October 4, 2015 3:58 pm

tour companies can still offer tours to certain Power5 games like now – it doesn’t matter if the team is located in Hawaii or on the West Coast – we would be there to support the team!

  84. Come on, Man! October 4, 2015 4:01 pm

A-House: That sounds like a GREAT deal for UH. and an extremely terrible one for the host school. After all, UH players will be using the host school’s dorms, cafeteria, practice facilities, classrooms, professors, academic tutors, assume liability for the student athletes while on campus for fall semester, basically the entire resources of the host school while only getting a percentage of gate receipts (which based on current attendance figures in the norm chow trainwreck era, will be pretty small).

if you can sell that to the host school, you should go into big business, and the admin of that host school who accepts should all be fired.

  85. greenthumb October 4, 2015 4:04 pm

Sadly I know a little too much about knee issues, and Wittek is decidedly in pain and his coordination is almost definitely affected by that much fluid buildup. In those shots of the bench during the game, it ooked like a physician could extract at least 80cc, easy, and there would still be swelling. Long flight(s) would just make that worse. Healing thoughts to him and all the other players. And thanks for not giving up.

So long as the players keep suiting up and playing, I will continue watching and hoping and supporting. Am I disappointed in the direction of the program, heck yeah. I hope the systemic issues get dealt with asap.

  86. Come on, Man! October 4, 2015 4:05 pm

Also, i’m sure the hawaii born players who have multiple offers but decide to stay at UH do so, in part, to play at home in front of their family and friends. If they’re gonna get sent to some small school with not very good facilities to play on the mainland for the entire season, why not accept a scholarship offer to the bigger mainland schools who are offering and not have to spend half their college career not even at the university they’re technically enrolled in?

  87. Akamai Okole October 4, 2015 4:11 pm

On a sad note, recall his son running the length of the field after setting a UH passing record to award him the ball. Chicken skin moment.

Aloha Oe to Levi Chang who many fans remember as the Timekeeper at many football games at the stadium. http://obits.staradvertiser.com/author/honolulu-star-advertiser-obituaries/

    RIP

  89. nutmegger October 4, 2015 4:33 pm

The crazy idea has a lot to work out. UH would have to pay for use of facilities, however the cost would be shared. Likewise new facilities costs could be shared. Contracts would need to be agreed to. Yes, local players might choose to go to another school if games are not played in front of their families, but that is already happening. The small western school would benefit in many ways – especially if it expanded the relationship with UH academically. There are a lot of students that might consider going there knowing that they could have a semester or two at UH.

Also, it could also serve as an away home base for the other UH teams that travel to the mainland. The other teams travel lighter and with fewer staff, so it could serve as a way station.

  90. nutmegger October 4, 2015 4:40 pm

Or another crazy idea is to build a University of Hawaii – Las Vegas….

  91. azwarrior22 October 4, 2015 5:01 pm

Let’s put the question to UH AD. It must have been painful to watch that UH can’t even qualify for their home town bowl, as Executive Director of the Hawaii Bowl. Now that you are the boss, do something that can restore the faithful and change the direction of this program. Doing nothing is not a recipe for success. Change is needed, NOW.

  92. Tempmanoa October 4, 2015 5:23 pm

SDSU will be one of only three games we will be favored to win over the rest of our schedule and we are favored by only 2.5. The rest of the games we are favored to win are Fresno State, and University of Louisiana Monroe– the margins will be in our favor but not by much. Some of the computer ratings like Sagarin are even more dismal.

  93. Bring back June October 4, 2015 5:37 pm

After 5 weeks we are DEAD last in the nation in scoring at 15 pts/game and that includes 47 against a FCS school. Take that out and we are average 7 puts a game. What in the world makes anyone believe that 1) we are any better than any of the other teams we are going to play because the last time I checked you actually have to score points to win. 2) that Norm chow will be able to turn this around, the game is do far past him. No need to wait, he needs to go NOW!

  94. Ipu Man October 4, 2015 6:04 pm

San Diego State U coach, Rocky Long, is in his 16th season.
Was 2-time Mountain West Coach of the Year.
Went to 5 bowl games recently.
And last Sat they beat Fresno Bulldogs spread attack: 21-7.
Before that SDSU lost 3 straight games. So they, too, are not happy campers.
Fresno got only 89 total yards whereas they averaged 342 yards and 25 points
per game before SDSU loss. And SDSU held them to ZERO 3rd down conversions. To keep Fresno offense off the field, they ran practically every play…

  95. Come on, Man! October 4, 2015 6:15 pm

yeah, you could make a waystation school and try to work out contracts and facilities construction, and having all academic credits transfer one for one in the UH system (good luck with that) and while we’re at it, solve the middle east peace process in occupied palestine, and dump tons of money, resources, and manpower for an unfeasible idea for very bad football program while the rest of the university still has a repair backlog that’as miles long and last i checked, had a hiring freeze for new faculty.

or you could do the obvious:

fire chow. find a new head coach.

  96. z October 4, 2015 6:17 pm

We broken. Can fix? Or no can fix. Rough.

  97. 808warriorfan October 4, 2015 6:20 pm

While I’m all in favor of the $2.2M we got for going to Columbus and Madison, there has to be some sanity while making the schedule. No bye weeks and all
that traveling will kill you. I expected the guys to be flat vs Boise; did not surprise me

  98. hitmanhart October 4, 2015 8:33 pm

best fix for UH is fire chow know !! very year you think cant worst then this year !! and wow he finds a way for 3 and 1/2 years !! sad part this team that has this is a dam good team !! coach is running this team to da ground !!
one way to see who running this team offence is to fire him how !!! when they can still save this season !! and about time to put the best player out there on the field !!

  99. nutmegger October 4, 2015 8:38 pm

“dump tons of money, resources, and manpower for an unfeasible idea for very bad football program” – yep, that’s true.

I’d venture getting a new coach won’t solve the problem. There are systemic problems beyond who happens to be the coach.

Waiting for the knight in shining armor or the second coming of JJ won’t be enough.

Never know, the Warriors could start winning and all this brouhaha will be for naught.

  100. el burro sabio October 4, 2015 9:30 pm

SMH. Just need a good spot to camp out for a week if the team stays on the mainland for consecutive road games, take tutors and proctors and set up class in the hotel conference room.

I don’t like the current MWC schedule because the three relatively easy road trips to Fresno, San Jose, and San Diego are in the same season, better if those trips were spread out.

  101. rundown808 October 4, 2015 9:35 pm

Politics, agendas, and poor money management. Never about pride, performance, and productivity. It starts from the top. Any school of this size, in this tax median, and geographic location, should not be in a deficit. Salaries of officials do not meet performance n production at every level. They are more concerned with their own personal agendas and not what’s best for the university. The football team is just one of many problems this school has. No school worth their weight would continue to keep a head coach on the program with this record.

Who hires a UH Ulumni basketball player to be head coach with no coaching experience but by passes a WNBA coach with experience. UH does. Who fires a asst. basketball coach who takes the reigns of the team as head coach after the previous head coach gets fired for NCAA violations and leads team to a winning season. They replace him yall. Who does that? UH does.
Case n point. UH football fans we got bigger problems and it’s not even on the field. But it affects the program. Comes down to choices. We have to choose better officials to make better decisions and choices for our university. We were fortunate enough to get June Junes and he’s a talented coach who made the program better. Used what resources he had and made it work. That took talent to overcome the many obstacles he faced with the program. He lost the rainbow and found the warriors. He rebranded the team and it’s pride. Now we are going backwards by using the rainbow warriors again? This is why JJ said at the last bowl, “I ve taken the team as far as I can go.” Period. Nuff said. Then the university is exposed for its lack of facilities and upgrades. Where’s the money going? Sad. Same politics. Same outcome. No money. No Quality Program period. We can complain all day but really there’s a bigger problem. It’s not about winning. The record and productivity speaks for its self. The university is not committed to building a solid program. As the saying goes BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME. Football is any universities money maker. But UH is not willing to invest.

  102. rundown808 October 4, 2015 9:57 pm

Arcumfortis, you said it all. You are very gracious and right.

  103. SteveM October 4, 2015 10:24 pm

I’ve waited a day to pass since our Boise debacle–yes, it was a debacle– but I think maybe our boys were a lot more physically injured than revealed. ST has been very mum about injury reports after Colorado. We might be in great physical shape, but you cannot get pounded on by two Big 10 teams in a 2 week span and be real healthy going the next week to Boise.

    RE: #96, 98, 99
808warriorfan, Nutmegger, and el burro sabio — I agree.

As for the waystation idea–good thinking out-of-the-box, assuming we plan to do a lot of back-to-back body bag road games for the money, there might be a solution with less logistics and moving parts:
    THE UH 747 CHARTER JET
    – All seats first-class sleeper types for the players
    – built in sick bay (medical facility) with two beds
    – plenty food–OK, airline food, but maybe a plate lunch on departure 🙂

No CONUS destination is more than a non-stop 10 hour flight away.
No waiting in airports or overnight motel stays in transit.

  104. Former UH Athlete October 4, 2015 10:50 pm

Can we please stop the June Jones coming back to UH talk.

He’s not coming back. Even if there is by chance a job opening after this season.

UH is 2-3, which is the best anybody could have hoped for. Nobody in their right mind gave UH any chance to beat Ohio St, Wisconsin or Boise St on the road. I think people made the mistake of getting their hopes up after watching an inspired defense hold their own vs OSU and UW. What people are forgetting is that OSU and Wisconsin played their C game at best. Both of those teams haven’t played to their potential this season with Ohio St not looking good vs easy competition and now Wisconsin failed to put up 7 points at home to Iowa.

Boise St firing on all cylinders is what made Saturday’s loss feel so bad. OSU, UW and BSU all have better talent across the board vs UH but Boise was the one team that was on fire. UH would have suffered similar beat downs if OSU or UW played better.

As weird as it seems after getting shutout on the road again, I don’t feel any better or worse about the team right now. UH flat out does not have enough good players to compete against the better teams. Once they get to teams closer to their level, things have looked better.

From next week on, the schedule gets easier. With Chow’s track record, there are no “easy wins” on the schedule, but from Saturday on, there are no more talent mismatches like what UH faced against OSU, UW, and BSU. If UH plays well, they will have a chance to win each game.

  105. st. anthony trojan October 4, 2015 11:11 pm

We have no proven QB now….if Max can’t plant…he should not start…Ikiaka
was 4 – 14 – 2 picks…he lost the job this year cuz he could not produce last year…
    Next in line is ______?????

  106. st. anthony trojan October 4, 2015 11:17 pm

“Former”…true…maybe the schedule gets easier…but the problem is ….we are not starting the same players as the first game… n as the season progresses…more n more replacements will be starting…how do we account for that ? ..and we have to also remember…the same will be true also “maybe” for our opponents…

Under 30 % completion is not going to do it…

  107. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 4, 2015 11:25 pm

Our WR coach Luke Matthews needs to be replaced or another coach needs to help him. We are nearly halfway through our season and the WR group is one of the poorest performing group out there.

I did not realize until reading his bio that he was another GA that was promoted to a full time assistant. Much like Jordan Wynn.

For what was supposed to be one of the brightest spots on our team, Matthews has not been effective in getting the WR ready and on par with the game plan.

  108. BigFan October 5, 2015 12:34 am

I guess everyone’s so upset that nobody commented on Akamai Okole’s post about Timmy Chang’s father passing. He was not my favorite QB but gave us many memorable moments.
    Condolences to the Chang family.

  109. hitmanhart October 5, 2015 12:39 am

with all this blow outs !! UH should have tryed the other 2 qb aready !! and other is JJ is coming !!

  110. JimmyB October 5, 2015 2:37 am

Sad to see the program in the state it is in now and what it was under JJ. Hawaii don’t seem to have made any changes to what JJ said needed to happen when he was the program head in those glory years, so its not all Chows fault and Chow is a very respected coach but 10 and 32 is no good. JJ now would just LOVE to be back at Hawaii! I,d love to see him running his system for a final run which could be used to bring in his protégés to continue after his eventual retirement. Having said that, even he would have a hard time at first turning it all around.
Good Luck Warriors……..you are going to need it!

  111. airsumo October 5, 2015 3:04 am

#49 and #59 pointed out that doing the same unsuccessful things repeatedly and expecting different results is insane. To get different results try a different cast of players. Wittek is hurt, try Reilly or Zhwalen, use different receivers. Use this next game to sub for dinged up players. I think just by doing something like this may provide a boost to the players.

  112. sofaking_blk October 5, 2015 5:33 am

We’re 2.5 points favored against SD St., how in the world are we favored when we can’t even score?

  113. sofaking_blk October 5, 2015 5:38 am

    #77
Chow doesn’t care about the future of this program and neither does Upper Campus otherwise they would’ve fired him two years ago. All Chow cares about is getting paid and all the Manoa Mafia cares about is “saving money”.

  114. Shoko October 5, 2015 6:03 am

Let’s see how the remainder of October plays out. If Chow can’t get three wins this month (SDSU, UNM, UNR or AF), I doubt Hawaii will be bowl eligible. Besides, I think November would be a good month to plan the search for a new head coach.

  115. rundown808 October 5, 2015 6:04 am

If you look at the OH game what was lacking with the receivers was they could not get open. No seperation. That is vital. Its all about seperation. No speed but most important no agility to break open. You have to have a skill set ability to explode off the line and seperate to catch the ball. Run routes crisp and clean meet the ball thrown on point or not. As long as it’s in the vicinity. To give up their body if necessary to catch the ball. That takes instinct. They have to be aggressive from the line. When a real receiver comes up to the line, the defendar will know who’s boss. It ain’t him. Lol. That is the kind of receiver should be recruited based on those atributes. Whittek has the arm. But receivers can’t drop balls. Like the saying goes, “if you touch it, you catch it.”

  116. boolakanaka October 5, 2015 6:05 am

Yup, I support them always, but the truth is, that was one old fashion okole whuppin–took our lunch money, our bus pass, and our best kikada doll.

That said, burn the film. Would not even do the traditional Monday film review. I still see 7 wins as doable. A right roll here, a tip there, and it still could be legitimately done.

  117. Come on, Man! October 5, 2015 6:16 am

Regarding this terrible waystation idea: You guys are making like the travel is the primary reason why UH is fielding a terrible football team. The travel is a factor but UH teams have been dealing with this for the entire existence of the football program. Now that we have an incompetent head coach and a mismanaged team, all of a sudden this factor is SO huge that people think (in theory) that it’s a great idea to dump possibly MILLIONS into this waystation idea (that, just looking at the academic side of the picture, is extremely unfeasible)?

    give me a break.

Improve facilities and so on is good, if we have money for it (which, throughout this norm chow trainrweck, we probably don’t/it would be hard to justify when the rest of upper campus, facilities and faculty, is in bad shape… and that IS the primary mission of the university, right? education? not fielding a team of 83 people throwing around footballs?), but a new head coach, provided he is competent, will do much more than looking to hijack another school to provide a satellite campus strictly for football players.

    priorities, gentlemen.

someone also wrote: “. It starts from the top. Any school of this size, in this tax median, and geographic location, should not be in a deficit.”

it’s possible there’s financial mismanagement, but also, if you’re talking about the athletic dept deficit, most schools, aside from the very upper echelon of athletic programs, are running deficits. sometimes MASSIVE deficits.

in this, UH is not alone.

  118. Come on, Man! October 5, 2015 6:28 am

Also, there were comments on saturday about how “gay” the retro uniforms looked, probably because of the rainbows on it or whatever. Come on, guys. It’s 2015. Homophobia and using “gay” as a prejudicial term is silly.

I think Ikaika can still help the Rainbow Warriors. Dink and
Donk. Do lots of slants. Block diagonally and run zig zags.
    Lakalaka can do that.
And oh yes, run the quarterback wide.
And when they are not looking, throw the long pass bomb.
    Boom. Hawaii wins 🙂

it’s possible there’s financial mismanagement, but also, if you’re talking about the athletic dept deficit, most schools, aside from the very upper echelon of athletic programs, are running deficits. sometimes MASSIVE deficits.

You’re right but UH’s deficit is mostly because of blatant INCOMPETENCE. The people at the top have absolutely no idea what their doing, at worst, they don’t even care. They kept Chow on board because they were “saving money” now the Univ. is even more in debt. IMHO, every member of the BOR should be fired IMMEDIATELY pending an investigation into fraud, waste and abuse.

Football is played by people. Their people are better than our people
Must recruit better people. Coaches must first and foremost recruit

Their people have been better than our people for the past 4 years. How can the coaches recruit when NOBODY wants to come here and play.

Please, no talk of JJ, Rolo, or Miano. IMHO if you’re going to resurrect someone, talk Dave Aranda.
