Game day: The Ohio State

COLUMBUS — The Warriors woke up early — 8 a.m. ET (2 a.m. HT) — for their usual game-day walk.

There was drizzle and the temperature was 67 degrees, but the Warriors appeared to find the walk refreshing and unifying.

After that, the schedule called for breakfast, meetings, pre-game meal and taping.

It was just another pre-game schedule … in preparation for the nation’s No. 1 team in its home opener before more than 105,000 scarlet-and-gray wearing fans.

I had a dream that somebody changed around Hawaii Warrior World and I couldn’t find my blog posts.

Just got back from road trip to Lander, WY to visit friends. Also saw the relocation American Japanese camp in Cody, WY.

Excited to see Warriors football. Time to shock the world.
    Go Rainbow Warriors!

  25. Stephen Tsai September 12, 2015 6:05 am

It’s weird to come to Ohio for better weather.

  26. bowwar September 12, 2015 6:37 am

#24: Didn’t know there was a relocation camp in Cody…Mom was born and raised in Sheridan and I worked in Yellowstone in my younger days. Wish I was in Ohio watching the game today. Meanwhile, I have to find someplace showing the game in Kaneohe.

  27. Ala Wai September 12, 2015 6:43 am

Go Rainbow Warriors! Play hard. Play safe,

  28. cappie the dog September 12, 2015 7:01 am

This closely contested Jacksonville State/Auburn game gives me hope.

    Woo-hoo.

Titans just got a first down in Auburn territory.

If you save water by not watering your lawn, you end up with a lot of dirt spots, which turns into micro-lakes during intemperate weather.

My wife and I just came home after seeing the team off at the hotel. We held up a big banner that said We Believe and Go Warriors and it was great to see them on their way to the stadium. This is the game I have been waiting my entire life for as a Buckeye and ‘Bow fan and I am rooting for the ‘Bows all the way today!

    Go Warriors!!!

  37. 808warriorfan September 12, 2015 8:04 am

By the way Max Wittek’s father looks like he could play …

  38. heluhelu September 12, 2015 12:01 pm

So glad coach Chow found his new Schroeder. Wouldn’t be Chowtime without a QB who hurts more than he helps.

  39. heluhelu September 12, 2015 12:08 pm

Ok. Maybe Wittek better than Schroeder (converts 4 & 3). Maybe not (another near pick).

  40. heluhelu September 12, 2015 12:09 pm

Sack not Wittek’s fault unless he missed presnap read.

  41. heluhelu September 12, 2015 12:13 pm

Hawaii’s D playing tuff again. Too bad on field so long.

  42. st. anthony trojan September 12, 2015 12:17 pm

    help

  43. st. anthony trojan September 12, 2015 12:20 pm

    Ineffective QB…. very sad..

  44. st. anthony trojan September 12, 2015 12:23 pm

Seems like our middle is playing a very nice game against the rush..hope they not tire to much now down the stretch…

  45. heluhelu September 12, 2015 12:26 pm

Game announcers have propped Hawaii d/dline/dbacks thruout. All deserved. But true respect = d forcing Urban Meyer to call TOs

  46. heluhelu September 12, 2015 12:27 pm

Oh well. Buckeyes convert on 4th. Hawaii d on fumes.

  47. st. anthony trojan September 12, 2015 12:31 pm

Glad they are running.. n doing the chow thing.. n milk the clock…he he he

  48. heluhelu September 12, 2015 12:40 pm

QB turnover. Opponent scores. It’s WARRIOR FOOTBALL!!!

  49. st. anthony trojan September 12, 2015 12:41 pm

The TAKERS OF 38 + kinda squeezing now… hope it ends ..just like it is now…at LEAST WALK AWAY WITH CASH.. N LONG FACE…

  50. heluhelu September 12, 2015 12:44 pm

Ikaika in. Announcers credit OSU d for limiting Hawaii passing yardage. Do they know Chowtime not = spread?

  51. oldtimer808 September 12, 2015 12:48 pm

Hawaii did their best defensively but our offense just could not do anything against the Ohio State defense. Please no more score from Ohio State so we can be under the spread of 40.

  52. st. anthony trojan September 12, 2015 12:49 pm

RUN OUT THE CLOCK CHOW…RUN OUT THE CLOCK…

  53. heluhelu September 12, 2015 12:49 pm

Bucks score again but Phillips no fluke. Decent cover, wraps well despite size. Could see training camp invite at next level.

  54. st. anthony trojan September 12, 2015 12:49 pm

    MAYBE EWALIKO RUN ONE BACK

  55. oldtimer808 September 12, 2015 12:50 pm

Turn overs turn overs auwe that hurt.

  56. oldtimer808 September 12, 2015 12:57 pm

Ok OSU didn’t make the spread.

  57. Akamai Okole September 12, 2015 12:59 pm

    Shux!

  58. st. anthony trojan September 12, 2015 1:02 pm

Yea OT808… those turnovers would have given Sanchez 4 more punts he he he

  59. WarriorNY September 12, 2015 1:06 pm

I thought the guys on D played their hearts out. Only so much they can do alone. On offense, we’re not going to see corners or a front like that for the rest of the season. I think our team should be fine so long as Kennedy’s injury isn’t major.

    Way to play hard Warriors!

Even Urban Meyer said it after the game… Those kids in white played hard…

  60. st. anthony trojan September 12, 2015 1:07 pm

Hats off 2 the defense……they played like warriors…offense needs work…

Just can’t play a top team…with same old …same old plays etc…they have to good a scouting system…and lots of time…all summer…they are working..like we are.. just that they have more assets then we do…

Thanks..BJ FOR THE MONEY GAME…U SURE KNOW HOW TO RAISE FUNDS..

  61. st. anthony trojan September 12, 2015 1:10 pm

Hmmmmmm 2 games with scores in the seventies.. n Baylor not started yet…HI FLYING WEEKEND..

  62. UpIrons September 12, 2015 1:18 pm

I’ve mentioned before that I live in Columbus and normally root for the Buckeyes. I’ve been wanting to see the Buckeyes play The Rainbow Warriors for years and when Ben Jay left Ohio State and went to UH I sent him an email and asked for this game today. It was very special to go and see the team at their hotel before they headed to the ‘Shoe and then what a blessing to see the Haka! Those boys played their hearts out and made Ohio State work for every single yard – Hawaii should be very proud of The Warriors today and what a major national stage to show the world just how great a team you have. Aloha all of you and best of luck with the rest of the season. I think the Warriors will beat Wisconsin in 2 weeks and I think they have a huge opportunity to win their conference especially if the Defense continues to play like that – wow! So proud! Go Bows!

  63. Akamai Okole September 12, 2015 1:22 pm

    Heads High, Fellas!

That was the Creme dela Creme of CFB. They will make teams with far bigger budgets and resources look way worse before January.

  64. oneseason September 12, 2015 1:31 pm

Great job by the defense. Holding Ohio State to 17 points through 3 quarters was great. With 4 turnovers, hold OSU to 38 was really impressive. Bowl eligibility is the litmus test for Chow as far as the offense IMO.

  65. z September 12, 2015 1:35 pm

Okay tweak game coming up. Need to find playmakers and tweak the oline.

Colorado State goes down in overtime. Auburn barely beats mighty Jackson St. In overtime. Gotta love college football.

  66. cappie the dog September 12, 2015 1:59 pm

Hawaii didn’t embarrass themselves on national television.

    I like Tom Mason.

Being down 14-0 felt like being down 2-0 in soccer.
If I had money on Hawaii, I would have been thrilled with their offensive approach.

Matt Miller has no talent as a broadcaster.

  67. Rodney September 12, 2015 2:03 pm

    Good. Job warriors!!!
Boy what if we had JJ
    Run n shoot with this
    Defense!

  68. Tarheel warrior September 12, 2015 2:12 pm

Kennedy and the defence played lights out against the best team in the nation. Lots of upside for both side of the ball for the rest of the season. Rest up and get ready for the next game !!

  69. Ala Wai September 12, 2015 2:20 pm

Hawai’i survives Body Bag game with a few injuries. Good payday. OSU defense may be the best we face this year. Shut down corners and great speed to go with size. Our outside WRs had no room to make catches and looked overwhelmed. Several dropped passes. Max had no time to pass and receivers were covered. It was a home opener for OSU and the stands looked full. Their fan support is incredible. Did you see the student section? A sea of red players jerseys. Wish our fans would be so committed. Wishing a safe flight home for the team. It’s pau, now go rock UCD.

  70. Markazulu September 12, 2015 2:28 pm

I’m actually in quite a good mood. I thought it would get ugly like 60-10 or something like that but to hold Ohio state to 17-0 into the 4th all I can say is wow. Great effort I wish out offense played better but they showed very few burst of potential 29 yard completion to collie and the combo of Paul Harris/Mel Davis.

  71. H-Man September 12, 2015 2:29 pm

Warriors have to find an offense. Didn’t Bailey say 75 TDs is the goal this year? And I kept looking at the stats to make sure. Hawaii ran only 43 offensive plays for a total of 165 yds.

  72. hitman September 12, 2015 2:39 pm

aloha everyone !! what a game for 3 qts !! thank you Tom Mason defense for keep us in the game !! the offense just could not do anything and max was off big time !! way to slow for a team like OSU . chow should change the QB earlyer .

  73. Markazulu September 12, 2015 2:48 pm

Kudos also to the Ohio st fans who applauded the haka.

  74. UpIrons September 12, 2015 2:55 pm

I need to be able to watch more of the ‘bows… Anyone there have a good reliable online link for an Ohio guy to watch Rainbow Warrior home games?

  75. oneseason September 12, 2015 3:00 pm

Another positive … Hawaii defense frustrated Ohio State so much that Urban Meyer changed QBs. (from Jones to Barrett) in the first half.

  76. H-Man September 12, 2015 3:04 pm

Oops. Correction. Hawaii ran 61 offensive plays

  77. hitman September 12, 2015 4:01 pm

offense need a lot of work !! coach chow need to try other qb !! try something to get them going !! how much give aways max had !! that chow problem from past years he stick with a qb to long when there having a bad game or off !!

  78. Hilo-Warrior September 12, 2015 4:27 pm

Why are we blaming Max for? He was making the throws. The receivers weren’t making the catches. They dropped so many passes this week and last.

  79. st. anthony trojan September 12, 2015 4:36 pm

Well be nice to see on here how many EXACTLY passes were dropped…
to arrive at his right percentage…hope the coaches do that…but still he was ineffective for what ever reason…good defense on their corners etc… or other..
surely sum one will evaluate the game film…problem is… we never get the results…unless at Mondays luncheon sumone ask them hard questions… n reply here for all of us to know….

  80. Exiled September 12, 2015 4:39 pm

#74, UpIrons, the mountain west website will stream the conference games. Not sure about next week’s UC Davis game though, might be exclusive oceanic ppv.

  81. UpIrons September 12, 2015 4:43 pm

There are some preliminary stats here:

    http://buckeyextra.dispatch.com/content/stories/2015/09/13/0912-osu-hawaii/opponent-stats.html

  82. MattyBoy September 12, 2015 4:56 pm

Chows C.R.A.P offense…. Chow’s Run And Punt offense. Awesome defense. Horrible, horrible offense. Chow needs to go.

  83. WarriorNY September 12, 2015 5:16 pm

Have we ever played a great team like this so close for so long??? We were out matched talent wise at every position. More speed at every position…

You cannot blame Chow for this game. They were simply better…

  84. Tempmanoa September 12, 2015 5:21 pm

D was outstanding although with the score still 38-0 from turnovers the national press makes it sound like Ohio State shot themselves in the foot or did not have enough time to rest and prepare without recognizing how well the Hawaii D played. Just too bad OSU were able to get the cheap turnover scores late in the game. Offense just did not execute– passing game started well with protection for wittek, receivers getting open (as open as you get with OSU), but OSU shut us down with some adjustments or we just dropped passes.

  85. st. anthony trojan September 12, 2015 5:35 pm

    SOME POSITIVE FOR THE DEFENSE…

    • Ohio State did not throw a touchdown pass for the first time in 25 games, ending the school record tying streak of 24 games in a row with a touchdown (first set by the 1994-96 teams).

    • Ohio State recorded the fifth shutout under Urban Meyer with the 38-0 win over Hawai’i. The Buckeyes blanked Kent State (66-0) and Wisconsin (59-0) in 2014 and Florida A&M (76-0) and Purdue (56-0) in 2013.

  86. SteveM September 12, 2015 5:48 pm

Ka-ching! Tough job done and $1,200,000 into the Hawaii A.D. cash register!
Hurry home and heal up Warriors!

The $1 million payday at Wisconsin is not looking so daunting now.
    Ka-ching!
Boise State is not so intimidating now.
But let’s not look past UC Davis!

  87. oldtimer808 September 12, 2015 5:59 pm

Don’t be so tough on our offense because OSU will do this to many of the teams on their schedule. This is only one game as we move forward. I doubt the run and shoot would have done any better against this defense by OSU. If the offense doesn’t execute you just can’t expect much when that happens. Max just didn’t have a lot of time to get set in the pocket and our receivers were really covered. I stil think our team will end up with at least 8 wins when the dust settles. GO BOWS!! Up next Rainbow Wahine Volleyball.

  88. Les September 12, 2015 6:05 pm

defense played well, but let’s not get carried away here: Ohio state played extremely poorly. If they had a full week of prep after the Va Tech game, this would’ve been a blood bath. but credit the UH defense for coming out to play.

offensively, the receivers for UH were pretty awful, looked timid, and didn’t do much to help wittek out. you could really see the talent disparity on the field. compared to ohio state, UH players look REALLY slow. but that’s to be expected.

bobby curran or whoever kept saying that if UH plays like how they did against colorado, they’ll be a good team. I disagree. I think UH played pretty poorly against colorado, but i guess that’s how low the standard of play has become since norm chow took over.

UH football isn’t very good at all, but they showed heart today at colombus so hats off to them.

  89. 3-Prong September 12, 2015 6:23 pm

Defense left it on the field. My take is that other than a lot of dropped passes, it is hard to assess the offense because their defense it legitimate. Against lesser competition we should be ok. Overall proud of the effort.

Dissapointed in local tv “experts” attributing lack of buckeye offensive production to: 1) not enough prep time coming off a short week and 2) too many weapons to choose from. No excuses from our boys of having to travel 5,000 miles to get here. Um, hows about a Hawaii defense that flew around today guys! I think Urban saw that.

  90. Warbow September 12, 2015 6:31 pm

Joe Montana wouldn’t have done any better with the receivers we have. No separation and when they do, they drop a wide open pass. Wittek is the best we have, we got to ride with him. Woosley can’t even complete a simple flare pass. Enough with the changing the QB talk, be careful for what you ask for, you just may get it.

  91. 3-Prong September 12, 2015 6:32 pm

Great meeting Mr & Mrs A House and family and today meeting chawan-cut, Warrior Dave and my new hero Maddog50, who gave a passioate speach at the pregame tailgate! Go Bows!

  92. Dano September 12, 2015 6:42 pm

Matt Millen was the TV color man today. Millen was also the defensive teammate of Hawaii coach Kurt Gouveia on the super bowl champion washington redskins teams.

  93. Ipu Man September 12, 2015 7:03 pm

So proud of The Warriors. They played their hearts out.
Go Bows! Beat the crap out of the rest of your opponents.
    You can do this 🙂

  94. Markazulu September 12, 2015 7:11 pm

The alarming thing for me is the number of drops we had in the past 2 games. Wittek wasn’t perfect but I can’t blame him for this performance because I think Ohio state is just that good. If the offense lays an egg against uc Davis then that’s a whole different story though. I hope the boys just take it as a learning experience. Boise and Wisconsin is gonna be difficult but not Ohio st in the shoe difficult.

  95. Markazulu September 12, 2015 7:12 pm

I liked what I saw outta Mel Davis though he was getting pretty good gains against a stout defense.

  96. winning September 12, 2015 7:33 pm

Well, UH has 11 games to score 72 TD’s to reach their goal of 75 TD’s. Doesn’t look good with the same old O and a pressure out QB.

  97. amela September 12, 2015 7:53 pm

Dropped and over thrown passes again and again. TV commentators kept saying the offenses bad play due to short week over and over but nothing said about us having to travel all the way there. Just wished the offense could have scored some. They were way better than what the final score showed and that give away fumble for a touchdown really sucked.

  98. Shoko September 12, 2015 7:54 pm

    Five things learned today:
    1. No shame in a shutout against the #1 team in the country.
    2. Warrior defense proved it might be a force to be reckoned with in conference play.
    3. Might take more time for the QB and WR to build some chemistry to be effective.
    4. The MWC went 1-11 this weekend indicating its not as strong as last season.
    4. The media, once again, overrated Boise State.

  99. amela September 12, 2015 7:54 pm

Another thing that is irritating that after every lost Coach Chow seems like a really happy camper I would expect a more disappointing face.

  100. winning September 12, 2015 8:05 pm

Also, No speed receivers will be a problem again this year. dump the TE’s and go 4 wide already cause no mo speed-Dahhhh! But u know what? Too late already! cause receivers still running wrong routes. going be more worse-CHAOS!!

  101. hitman September 12, 2015 8:15 pm

Warbow what i was saying about changing the qb was because max cant run and he was having a off game !! would of been nice to try a other qb like Woosley who have better legs to roll out and save max for a other day !!

  102. st. anthony trojan September 12, 2015 8:27 pm

Well Ewaliko has speed… and is not being used…maybe a very good receivers coach…

  103. Markazulu September 12, 2015 8:56 pm

Also I wanna say pleasantly surprised our team didn’t commit to many penalties. I think the duo of Davis and Harris will be a good one. Hopefully Lakalaka and st juste get 100%. Very shocked that kemp only had 1 catch though.

    Well we had only 8 completions…out of 24… n 8 punts…n 4 turnovers…not to good..,.however….they never gave up…true warriors…lets hope for 72 pointsnext week…defense not give up 2 td’s next week…

We get speed but against a team like OSU they get more speed. We just need to get the team ready for conference games. I think we get chance.

Did anyone else see the play when wittek threw to our te I believe and he dropped it. Chow looked pretty pissed and slapped the ground lol. Any word on Pedroza didn’t really hear his name. Also any word on how gener is doing?

Pedroza….zero catches… not know about Gener..

i know Hawaii isn’t a big time program but I figured they’d be getting more props for the defensive effort. I mean after Monday’s game alone everyone expected Ohio state to hang at least 50 on Hawaii. I mean I get it they had a short week but everone kept raving how Ohio state was getting back the suspended players and how they would overmatch Hawaii. Defensively they overmatched our offense but I think we held our own against their potent offense.

Yea ur right Z… but the question is…do we put our speed n try to match up better…or do otherwise…???
