Hawaii=Florida rewind

score

A very good win for a Wahine team that has been looking for the right combinations.
Shoji called it a complete team effort.
Said they served tougher at the end, that Koelsch and Mablio came up big, but emphasized the team effort.

box not up but you can look at the stats

http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=98957

Career-high 27 kills by Taylor, Manu-Olevao with 16. Kahakai with 19 digs.
Houston finished with 19 but had 6 hitting errors, 3 in the final 2 sets.
Racek 15 kills and Alhassan 10. Alhassan has not had a hitting error in the two tournament matches here.

I’m sure people will find something to complain about but it would be nice if this could be enjoyed until tomorrow.

Kendra is my MVP tonight she got the middles involved, her blocked slowed down Recek a lot, in the first three sets she was just having her way but finished with just 5 kills in the last two sets and a lot of errors.

Happy Tai finally got out of hitting negative and against the biggest block she has faced all year, hope this is a turing point for her for the rest of the year.

Great match on both sides of the net. Congrats to all especially the wahine of Manoa.

  3. z September 11, 2015 11:04 pm

Alhassan was the one I was worried about in the 5th set but UH did a great job with their serve. Higgins had a nice run. She is one of our best servers. I like how our block showed up at the end.

  4. noblesol September 11, 2015 11:07 pm

YeahHHHH Wahine! Good win, outstanding effort from everyone tonight. Including the crowd! You’ve got depth beyond your dreams when you’ve got 6,000 fans cheering for you like tonight!

  5. Cindy Luis September 11, 2015 11:07 pm

Couple of notes from the SID (thank you Kara)
-It was UH’s first win over a Top 5 team since UH upset No. 1 Texas on Aug. 30 in four sets in 2013
First time this season that three Rainbow Wahine tallied double-digit kills with Taylor hitting 27, Tai Manu-Olevao with a season-high 16 kills and Kalei Greeley adding 11.
Hawai‘i libero Savanah Kahakai popped up a career-high 19 digs
UH’s Emily Maglio came from off the bench to tie her career-high with six kills to go with three blocks

  6. warriorfan September 11, 2015 11:13 pm

Savannah had a great night digging wise, but she made a lot of errors on free balls that she shouldn’t be making, hope she cleans that up.

  7. Lei September 11, 2015 11:16 pm

Great game to both teams. No matter what the girls do people are still not satisfied. Hang it up already some of you never played volleyball before and some of you don’t know what is told to the girls on what and where they’re suppose to cover.

#7) One of the best lessons to learn in life is that no matter how tough or unfair criticism might seem to you, the only response, the best response, is Thank You! It’s one of the best lessons in anyone can learn in their professional life. Always be thankful for feedback, always strive to learn something from it, never respond negatively to it. Accept criticism gracefully, thankfully, and with an appreciative attitude, no matter how poor and unhelpful it may actually be. Always find a way to turn the negative into a positive!

Great match! Player for player (except for Nikki), Florida had the edge in talent, but Hawaii played better as a team. The crowd and Shoji’s coaching were the X factors. In the same way UCLA exposed our weaknesses, UH exposed Florida’s.

It will be interesting to see who starts tomorrow. I hope we see the same lineup that won that 5th set. That group had a nice chemistry and energy.

Polls don’t mean much this early in the season, but I wonder where Florida and Hawaii will place next week?

  13. darkfire September 12, 2015 12:07 am

To all the armchair quarterbacks that thought TMO should be taken out; and others should be thrown in ; sometimes you just need faith. Although this game is like a chess match, you cannot arbitrarily take people out just because they hit a couple of bad shots. Faith and character wins more than sometimes the apparent “skills” and “kills”. I will end with a quote from Calvin Coolidge.

“Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”

UH was a bunch of persistent and determined wahines!!! GO BOWS!!!

sure Hawaii had some things to work on through out the match, but let’s leave that out and enjoy this victory. i for one was keeping my fingers crossed that this would turn into a major upset. i think this is the Wahine team we have been waiting to see show up this season. this Florida team is stacked with a whole lot of talented players, and i was terrified at how tall their middle was. but again, gotta give Hawaii props, they played with a lot of heart. enjoy this victory Hawaii fans, i know i will. let’s leave the complaining for another day.

  15. Not an Expert September 12, 2015 1:10 am

Having Kendra the setter and finding a steady and consistent left side hitter will make UH dominate the average teams. When the libero starts being like a Longo they will be good as any team in the top 5. Kendra is like a batting practice pitcher, she makes it easy for the hitters to hit and place their kills. Obvious she does a better job with the middle hitters. As I stated before some don’t show good in practice but when the lights go on they take it up couple notches.

  16. JustAsking September 12, 2015 1:26 am

Wow—–Fantastic match! The team was fantastic and the crowd amazing! The ladies played hard throughout — many congratulations!!!!

  17. warriorfan September 12, 2015 1:38 am

Really hope the wahine win out, leave no doubt about hosting, it would be a real shame for the last home match to be on November 1st!!

  18. Lei September 12, 2015 1:43 am

#11 Thank you and you’re absolutely right..

  19. darkfire September 12, 2015 2:30 am

Kendra was key toward the end of the game. Not because she was better than Higgins, but, her height gave the Bows an advantage. I hope the Bows will play with the same intensity against Florida as they need to play against Washington. GO BOWS! NCAA here we come! :o)

  20. ignaciosaid September 12, 2015 2:39 am

WOW—-have seen Fla. before , but did not realize how balanced they are (so what can I say about the Wahine?) I will definitely watch this game , over and over again! All my Mahalo to the coaching staff and especially the WAHINE , for a job well done. Do not rest on this one game , but use it for inspiration for the rest of the season and the FINAL FOUR!!! GO WAHINE

“The Little Train That Could….” and did.

  22. LanaiBoy September 12, 2015 5:17 am

Kendra Koelsch in the front row and Taler Higgins in for serving was very successful tonight. Will Shoji replace Higgins with Koelsch after the serve? That is the question. Higgins is quicker in the back row and a better defender. Koelsch seems to have a better connection to the middles and has a beautiful back set. Or will Higgins again be the starter and Koelsch come in only situationally? Will be interested in finding out. Last night we found out why Shoji called Tai Manu-Olevao dynamic. She had some amazingly powerful hits last night. She can bring the heat. However, hitting hard is worthless if you hit directly into the block. Seems like she learned how to hit smarter last night. Hope this continues instead of her reverting to bad habits of only hitting hard and harder. Savanah Kahakai continues to receive criticisms here and on VT. Admit she is probably the weakest libero of recent times with many longing for Longo. However, she too has a lots of upsides. She was an outside hitter in high school and perhaps needs a lots more experience and repetition to be more comfortable to be the Bow’s back-row quarterback (leader).

  23. haleiwacrossfitter September 12, 2015 5:30 am

Kendra is a gamer. Period. Finally got a chance to see her for more than a few points. She can flat out play and just looks confident out there, which is what you need your setter to be even when times are rough. If your setter looks confident and moves on to the next play, the team will usually follow, which is what I think happened tonight.

I know Annie needs to make herself more available to the setter and she needs to be more aggressive. But…only 1 set tonight? How can anyone prove anything with just 1 set? Same with Huff…just 1 set tonight. The team playing in set 4 and 5 looked good. Would love to see that team every night playing like that. Fun watching them.

  24. haleiwacrossfitter September 12, 2015 5:35 am

Oh, and Nikki took some great shots from the left tonight. I could see her hitting more on the left if TMO is having an off night and getting Huff on the right. Nikki looked good on the left tonight.

Kahakai was shaky, but she is still young. If Kendra takes the setting job, which I doubt, maybe Higgins can be given a shot at libero?

  25. 'ohanaInBellingham September 12, 2015 6:14 am

Can anyone remember if a Wahine has earned BWC PotW three weeks straight?

  26. Jkyoung03 September 12, 2015 6:33 am

I live on the east coast and didn’t get a chance to live stream the match. Does anyone know if/where I can catch the replay online?

  27. Wen September 12, 2015 6:43 am

The setter gets compared to a the quarterback in football but in the case of the Wahine it seems more like that of a pitcher where you have a opener and closer. Also which one you send in depends on who you’re playing.

  28. tongo September 12, 2015 6:58 am

Yes, you have to give it to the girls and Dave and company. Kudo ladies for the hard work, fight, courage, and believing in the team. Kudo to Dave for conceiving of the game some time ago and then identifying the pieces he needed to make it work. And as it was being developed and jelling, for standing by your game plan in spite of the call for your head – congrats coach. Yeah, you know what you are doing!

  29. Ron September 12, 2015 7:03 am

What was special about this win was that it was against a team that has no weaknesses and will challenge Penn St. for the Championship. We also have to be in that conversation. I would give Robin a lot of credit for her coaching up her charges. The three of them huddled up during each time-out. I thought Kahakai was fine and improving. The Florida libero was the best since Hagland (sp) of USC . No more real challenges until we go on the road later in the season A team win for the Wahine and the crowd.

  30. Pot of Gold September 12, 2015 7:32 am

Enjoyed that win, I could feel the energy from the crowd here, can’t imagine how electric it was live. Many complaints by posters on the UCLA game were more than answered by all, from TMO to Shoji and staff. Shoji adjusted as the match went along finally finding the right combinations to play both defense and offense. The bench strength is substantial and Shoji’s willingness to use the next man up crafted the victory.

Very happy to see the spark I mentioned had beenissing to date, it was saved for the best moment possible though. As I had wanted previously sets to the middles helped open up the outside hitters. Mistakes were still made, but they were forgotten for the next play, that will bode well for the Wahine’s post season march in addition to knowing the level of volleyball that they can reach.

Koelsh allowed the comeback to unfold, but I would be remiss if I didn’t mention how professional Higgins was about the switch. Her serving was crucial in the victory, true leadership.

Nikki Taylor is a joy to watch, I even noticed her showing some leadership before the second set, encouraging the girls to smile after points regardless of the outcome

Okay I have been saving this, but I will offer it up now. I am dubbing the middles as mmm mmm good, McGill, Maglio, and Mitchem. The more sets they get the better the team will do. Just think about how productive they were as Koelsh began using them against a team who has A caliber middles. Not only did they produce points, it forced Florida to play a more honest defense against the outsides. Like I said mmm mmm good.

  31. z September 12, 2015 12:16 pm

I”ll just let Dave do what he does. He sure did it last night. I was happy to see that the Wahine can do it in 5. Nikki was a beast. No doubt best player on the court.

  32. H-Man September 12, 2015 1:24 pm

Koelsch effectively set the middle. And contributed critical digs.

  33. menehune September 12, 2015 1:49 pm

    26. No, but if go to hawaiiathletics.com, you can watch highlights of the match. Incredible to watch, especially the long rallies won by the Wahine. GO BOWS.

  34. darkfire September 12, 2015 2:22 pm

    30. LOL! I love that mmm mmm good! Maybe Campbell Soups won’t come after you for that. You oughta feed that to Kanoa & Chris. You know how they like to come up with nick names like “McGill Kill” and “McGill the Thrill”.

Ok, everybody sing, “mmm mmm good, mmm mmm good, The UH Wahine Middles are MMM, MMM, GOOD!” ;o)

    Go Bows!

What a match! Hawaii’s surges at the end of set 4, and from the midpoint of set 5 … Gave me chicken skin!

Tremendous team effort! Props to Shoji and his staff too … They coached their butts off last night!
