Team has moved practice to the arena (yay) today. Pretty miserable in Gym I Tuesday afternoon where my car said it was 109 at 1:30 p.m. But they wanted to run three courts and the arena only has one as it is set up for this week’s matches.
UCLA in and getting in an early practice. They were scheduled for Gym I at 1 but may move to the arena.

Cindy, besides saving on favorites for Internet Explorer, how can I look at previous threads posted. Maybe a link on your present thread would be helpful, thanks.
American University may pose a bigger problem than UCLA. American, as a team, is as tall or taller than the Wahine and they pushed Florida before losing. UCLA’s middle blockers/hitters are 6-5 & 6-6, but were swept by LMU. Both should be good matches.
american always has a mix of international players on the roster too. and in recent years, they’ve shown that they’re not afraid of playing ranked teams. they still have players on the roster from their run to the sweet 16 in 2013. their tough serving got florida in passing trouble over the weekend (but i’m not sure if that was more au’s tough serving, or uf’s unstable passing). they’ve got an experienced setter (smidova) too.
ucla looked good and bad over the weekend. i watched their win against uva, and saw a little of the loss to lmu. passing was an issue for them, at times, and also terminating on the pins (with efficiency). despite the size in the middle, the setter, chandler, is undersized, giving something greeley/olevao to exploit.
iowa i dunno what to think of. on VT, some fans have mentioned iowa as a “sleeper team” in the big-10. they’ve traditionally been near the bottom of the conference standings. the only thing that’s kept them from the bottom-bottom is rutgers and maryland joining the big-10. but i don’t know too much about them. i tried watching the replay of their match against niu over the weekend on espn3 (which iowa lost), but it was like watching a high school match (imo). still though iowa has some size at the net. hawaii matches up equally or are bigger than them at every position, except setter. local loxley keala is 6’1″ … so conceivably they can put up a decent block against hawaii’s OHs in every rotation. and this team is coached by bond shymansky, who has been known to rejuvenate programs (this is his 2nd year at iowa). hawaii fans may remember shymansky’s georgia tech team which came to honolulu and gave hawaii a tough match in the 2003 regional finals.

3 I seem to remember that Georgia Tech ran a very fast offense, and as you said, gave UH a very tough match. If Iowa does the same, it could be very interesting.
#5. Yes, that offense that Kele Eveland ran was very entertaining. The match itself, being a Regional Final, made for an already electric atmosphere and then the crowd was introduced to Shymansky’s Ramblin Wreck offense! The middle, Alexandria Preiss was so versatile and gave Hawaii fits. I remember Moster being effective and I believe they said Lauren Sauer was recruited to Hawaii, she had a heavy arm. What a fun match to reminisce about.
Anyhow, should be fun seeing Keala running Shymansky’s offense, not sure what they ran at Mizzou other than the “My-daughter-and-you-will-run-a-6-2-and-we’ll-both-set-Carly” offense. But in her final year at ‘Iolani (2011) under Kainoa Obrey and his GMS offense, she may feel right at home running a quicker tempo.
Another ‘Iolani (’13) grad, Amnesty “Hoakalei” Dawson will be featured in this tournament playing for American. She’s listed as a Setter. I haven’t watched any of their matches, but her stats make her out to be a DS and possibly for an Opposite hitter as she either was not apart of the serve-receive formation or did not have a reception error til the four against Florida.
This will be a more entertaining tournament to watch as the competition rises (compared to last week) and with the homegrown talent returning to the Stanley as well as our annual visitors in UCLA.

5. GT did run a very quick offense, very much a touch-set by Kele Eveland.
We’ll see how Loxley Keala has adjusted to the offense. A little different than what she ran at Missouri. Keala’s dad said she is very happy with the move.
I don’t think it will be long until Shymansky makes his mark at his alma mater. But it’s going to be tough to move up in the Big Ten with its 14 teams.
I like the green socks that a couple of players are wearing today. (see added photo above)
Hall injured his right hand during a blocking drill. not broken but he’s not going to be setting any time soon.
Practice over. they worked on a few things that Iowa runs.
