As a season ticket holder to both the Wahine and the Warrior volleyball teams, can I watch the scrimmage tomorrow in the SSC?

So Ann Mitchem hardly had time to practice in camp, just two full days so far. We won’t expect to see her play unless one of the middle blockers falters or gets injured.

If Tai Mano-Olevao skips Sundays, whom do you think will play in her role?

  3. rayson August 21, 2015 9:07 pm

    2) If Olevao doesn’t play Sundays my guess is he moves Taylor to LS and Huff plays opposite for those matches.

  4. Cindy Luis August 21, 2015 10:15 pm

    1. I’m not in charge. I think season ticket holders should be among those who can attend but I don’t think they are included. I will suggest that to UH admin for next year.

    2. UH does not have a true OPP. The play book will include plenty of D and BIC sets
lots of options at the moment. should Manu-Olevao decide to not play against OSU in 9 days … I don’t know. Greeley not ready to be an L1. they might move Taylor to L1, Huff to RS. Eventually it will be hard to keep Mitchem off the court But In Her Own Words, she’s not ready for the speed of the offense at this level.

  5. HawaiiMongoose August 21, 2015 11:51 pm

I’ve posted elsewhere that I think Mitchem’s presence could push the Wahine back to the elite level… as in Elite Eight, if not Final Four. But even I don’t expect her to just step onto the court and dominate. I wouldn’t be surprised if it takes her half the regular season to get comfortable playing at this level. What’s important is that she’s firing on all cylinders by the time post-season play arrives.

  6. blunite August 21, 2015 11:55 pm

    @Cindy,
Good to know because I’ve not seen very many BICs from UH, but I thought Shoji preferred a plain vanilla offense? A simpler idea would be to sub out the libero and run a D left back. Do the coaches emphasize the 2 step and 4 step approaches to the BIC, D, 30, 40, 60 sets? These girls are capable of a far more sophisticated offense, if given the chance.

    4. Thank you Cindy for all your knowledge and info. Sometimes I wish you were in charge! 🙂 I definitely didn’t want to show up to the scrimmage uninvited! Go ‘Bows

  8. Ed Recto August 22, 2015 8:07 am

Dave Shoji needs to keep an eye on that 16 yr old, Paula Egonu. Try to get her over here to play for the Wahine come 2016, or 2017. She could just be the next Tee Williams, or Kanani Danoldson. Has a ton of international experience already. Will be on the Italian Olympic team come 2016.

    5. agree with you. her presence is obvious at the net and it is helping who ever is in the front row hitting to alter their shots and be smarter. She is very athletic and six practices in is learning quickly.

    6. They’ve run a back-row attack for years but think you’ll see more of it.
The women’s game doesn’t usually have a true opposite for some reason, unlike the men. Umlauft is a good example.
Taylor did do D’s last season but think that her injury slowed the process of getting more comfortable with it.

    7. Don’t think I’d want to be in charge.and thanks for the kind words.
You could contact the booster club president. Info on Hawaiiathletic.com
If you want to brave the approaching storm conditions. looking pretty nasty over here in Kailua.

  10. Cindy Luis August 22, 2015 8:09 am

As for today’s scrimmage, Shoji wasn’t sure what format he was going to run. At least that was as of the end of yesterday’s practice. Think it will depend on how quickly sets go and how much he wants to move people from one side to another.

    8. Egonu is amazing. she played against UH when they were in Milan. a wicked serve. The Italian coach told me that of the players in that particular match she was one of 2 he likely would have on the Olympic team.

I believe she has already turned pro so will not be playing collegiately.

Not sure where among the 54 pages of the link you sent that I’m supposed to look but is it from the story I wrote from Milan on May 20?

While official statistics were not kept, unofficially Italy had 18 aces in the 25-18, 25-17, 25-17, 25-20 win. (The coaches agreed to play at least four sets).

Eight of those aces were by rising star Paola Egonu, a dynamic outside hitter born in Italy of Nigerian ancestry who is just 16 years old. Her jump serve — reminiscent of former Wahine Jane Croson’s sky ball — often froze Hawaii’s serve-receive with its speed and knuckleball-like movement.

“The serves were coming in like bullets,” incoming senior hitter Tai Manu-Olevao said. “We started comparing it to (former Wahine All-American Emily) Hartong’s. Hartong has a mean serve, but this was something else.

“What did I learn? I definitely need to hit the weight room harder.”

When was the last time UH didn’t have walk-ons trying out for spots during fall camp? Did they have some last year?

  13. Cindy Luis August 22, 2015 8:25 am

With 12 scholarships and rosters usually between 16 and 18, they always have walk-ons.
No new ones this year. Still Ponce, Guinasso, Anderson. Huff on basketball scholarship

  14. Hot August 22, 2015 8:31 am

    13. Thanks, Cindy. I was referring to the new ones. It was pretty consistent that UH had new walk-ons trying out for spots during fall camp. IIRC, there were seasons with so many that Shoji had to cut some. Thinking about the 2003 and perhaps 2005 seasons. 2012 also, when they added Ponce.

The end of camp scrimmage and potluck are one of the few benefits allotted to Booster Club members. If you want to be able to attend, it’s simple–join the Booster Club!

  16. Cindy Luis August 22, 2015 10:40 am

    14. or they cut themselves. I remember one time where someone showed up for the first of two-a-days and didn’t come back that afternoon.

  17. Cindy Luis August 22, 2015 10:41 am

    15. Very true but if you look at some of the other programs it’s pretty impressive with their Fan Appreciate Day. Florida is a good example. they have a big to-do today, even celebrating Alberta’s birthday (that’s the mascot).

Iolani vs Redondo will be live streamed at 11 am

  19. Brandon August 22, 2015 11:43 am

Iosia currenlty hitting for Redondo. Her hitting isn’t too bad. No where near her setting level, but still pretty good. Excited to see her with the Wahine

  20. warriorfan August 22, 2015 12:04 pm

Iosia’s sets to rice are mostly money, If Rice was 6′ 3 she would be deadly in NCAA but glad she is not since she is going to be playing for the dink queens.

I really like Redondo’s freshmen middle.

  21. warriorfan August 22, 2015 12:36 pm

Iosia’s volleyball IQ is a lot like Aneli Otineru’s , just makes smart plays calmly.
Just too bad for her Redondo cannot pass, and Rice made lots of hitting errors.

  22. Ron August 22, 2015 1:31 pm

Iosia lived up to my expectations in the match with Iolani. WF pointed out that she is deceptively quick and I agree. She was hardly ever out of position, made very few errors, and like he said before “the middles will love her”. So will the outside hitters because she does not crowd the net with her sets like some setters do.
