Wednesday checkin: latest on Burns (Updated)

For those who missed the previous thread Burns injured her right hand during practice yesterday going up on a routine block during afternoon practice. Appears to be the base of her right ring finger but you never know how far down the hand it could be. Don’t want to speculate.

She is seeing a specialist this afternoon, is doing some workouts in the training room that don’t involve her hand.

We’ll know more this afternoon. Team picture is prior to 3 p.m. practice

I did see the Xray she posted on twitter but until I know that she waived her HIPAA/FERPA rights would prefer not to repost it.

Cindy, thanks for all of your responses yesterday and for the up-to-date practice information. It’s obvious that there’s a lot of interest and excitement in this year’s edition of the Wahine, even more so than usual.

Sorry to hear about Burns, hopefully it’s not too serious and she can get back on the court soon.

Hopefully, Burns’ injury isn’t too serious.

Is Taylor staying at opposite? Is there any possibility of her moving to the outside to join Greeley, with Mitchem playing opposite? Assuming of course that Burns is available as the No. 3 middle.

  3. Cindy Luis August 19, 2015 8:43 am

    2. Taylor is not a true opposite. In the UH system, the right-side hitter hits right twice, once from the left. And the LSs hit left twice, once on the right.
Both Taylor and Huff taking most swings on the right but they hit left as well.

Heading into her 3rd practice, Mitchem is a middle. IMHO, of the four MHs currently listed Burns would be No. 4 on the depth chart.

What! Burns injured her finger during practice! What bad luck. But she’s a freshman, so she has time to heal and still be available this season. Does she have a redshirt year available?

  5. Cindy Luis August 19, 2015 8:45 am

    4. She’s a true freshman. so yes, RS year available but let’s not jump ahead on any decision. We’ll see how bad it is this afternoon.

Am looking forward to the day when maple trees are at both of the starting MH positions. Local Stan Sheriff Arena crowd will have to learn to sing “O Canada” in addition to “Hawai’i Pono’i – just kidding. Go Tasha! Hope your finger will be okay!

Cindy, read earlier in the other thread that Dave is going to make his decision on Mitchem a couple days into practice. Is she taking reps from the outside as well? So far im just hearing middle.

Cindy, this was brought up before, but is Coach going to run a true 6-2 offense this season?

I know it was asked last year during his radio show, and he mentioned that he was considering it, but really ended up not running it (but a blocking sub w/ Kendra).

With all their weapons, they certainly can afford it 🙂

  9. Cindy Luis August 19, 2015 9:06 am

They rotate players in drills, including having the middles set. Even the DSs and setters hit during warmups.

She’s had two practices. They’re looking at what she can do there because that’s what she had played and is most comfortable. She runs the slide well.

    will be back on later.

    8. quote from Shoji this year about a true 6-2 “not going to happen.’
but as mentioned before, that does not preclude the double sub with Koelsch.

updated the original post to reflect Burns. Appointment moved to early afternoon so she is in the weight room working out, stuff that doesn’t involve her hand.

Too bad about Burn’s ring finger, hopefully after an evaluation it doesn’t keep her out for too long. This may also delay Annie’s look at outside, being down to 3 MHs. Ditto to Ron, lot’s of interesting participation on this blog indeed. I guess we won’t see you at the scrimmage being on Maui.

  12. Cubicle1126 August 19, 2015 11:48 am

hope all is ok with burns.

if it’s just a linear fracture, then she might be ok. just tape it up while playing/practicing, and use a split when she’s not.

  13. Cindy Luis August 19, 2015 12:25 pm

We’ll know more in about an hour or whenever she gets back from her 1 p.m.

  14. Maverick August 19, 2015 12:38 pm

Cindy, can you provide some observations on the OHs? How are they looking? Taylor, Greeley, Olevao and newcomer Castillo?

  15. Kazu August 19, 2015 1:20 pm

Hope Miss Maple Leaf won’t be out for to long.
11 So when is the Maui scrimmage supposed to be taking place?
Will Shoji be on any talk show , anyone knows? All i hear on the talk shows is about the Football which is getting you know what.

  16. Ron August 19, 2015 2:07 pm

Roofer68 was referring to the fact I have moved to Maui and will miss the pre-season scrimmage for the first time in years.Roofer, I will really miss our discussions at the intermissions, you are a very knowledgable guy and I learned a lot from you.

  17. blunite August 19, 2015 2:44 pm

    Cindy,

Would you know who (besides Greeley, Taylor, and Granato) will play 6 rotations?
If Mitchem or Castillo can play backrow it will give UH 5 potential options (3 front, 2 back). Sounds like Mitchem could use a tutor. Back in the day Wahine had their own tutor (former Wahine setter).

  18. Cindy Luis August 19, 2015 3:03 pm

Burns arrived about 15 minutes ago, in time to do our photo shoot for the S-A and the team picture. she is in a soft cast with an apparent break and out indefinitely.

    17. not sure about who stays in or doesn’t. Shoji said he was looking at sub patterns.

  19. Cindy Luis August 19, 2015 3:07 pm

update on Burns: out at least 4 weeks, could redshirt. Shoji said it was an unfortunate accident

  20. John August 19, 2015 3:52 pm

Wow, bummer for Burns. She must be disappointed. Hope she can heal and get back on the court quickly. Unfortunately she might have to redshirt. This will probably keep Mitchem in the Middle. Unless she’s too good and does end up playing 6 rotations.
