Doing the right thing

The presumption is an average high school student does not have to pay for his education, food, shelter, clothing or basic essentials. Anything more — dates, movies, cell phones — is paid by parents/guardians or by getting a part-time job.

An FBS scholarship covers a player’s education, food and shelter. But the essentials — toothpaste, soap, AXE, laundry, backpack, haircuts, etc. — aren’t covered. And the other expenses that make college life enjoyable also aren’t part of the scholarship.

The thing is, while regular college students can get part-time jobs, scholarship players already have a full-time job — to train and play football — while receiving the same compensation they did as high school students, except without basic essentials. (It also is a job in which only 1.6 percent of NCAA players go on to play professionally, according to a 2013 NCAA study.)

Cost of attendance makes sense — from fairness and competitive standpoints. As Nevada coach Brian Polian told reporters at the MWC media days: “What happens if a Mountain West school says, ‘We can’t (pay COA)?’ You have no chance to compete. Not only can you not pluck recruits from a power five (conference), you can’t compete in your own conference. You might as well be in the Big Sky, and that’s the harsh reality of it.”

As Ferd Lewis reported, UH will announce its COA plans today. Of course, there probably could be more that should be included, such as the initial flight from a player moving from the mainland, but that’s a discussion for another time. For now, this is a major commitment for a school that has a hole in its bottom line.

While at practice the other day, we heard the voice from the man upstairs.

It was Anthony Pierce, a former UH cornerback who was on the high-rise platform shooting video of practice.

Pierce, Mike Andrade and Kiha Sai received medical retirements. They remain on scholarship, and are on track to earn degrees this coming academic year.

In the meantime, they are working for UH video coordinator Dory Kong.

By the way, it’s Pierce’s birthday.

Pay the max. Look at it as any investment. You put $$ into the right places and see bigger returns. If Hawaii offers the most $$, we can go back to recruiting legit D1 players vs guys FCS guys and start winning again. Wins = $$. Wins = donations and interest from the state. If this University wants to start seeing our debt decrease, spending more in the right places is a good start. Getting cheap will only dig the hole deeper.

Speaking of haves and have nots, Hawaii’s first opponent moved into some shiny new digs:

#1, If it was that simple everyone would be able to handle the increased cost.

  4. nutmegger August 11, 2015 10:23 am

Is it against NCAA rules to have a company donate services to UH athletics and advertise it? If Hawaiian Airlines gives a discount to UH and advertises as the official airline of UH athletics, would that be a rules violation?

Steven Wright’s journey to overtake Scott Karl’s title as the Greatest Hawaii Rainbow pitcher ever to throw in Major League Baseball continues today against the Miami Marlins at Tropicana.

Why Scott Karl and not Derek Tatsuno?

    3. Never said it was simple. But this is an opportunity for Hawaii to to rise above mountain west competition. That’s if this state cares to put a good product out there.

perhaps the AUSH spokesperson put it best: they will support COA, but the cost cannot be from the State or other UH students.

this attitude weighs heavily and could be the major reason for “who cares about what happens to UH sports”

Hawaii will NEVER receive the support seen at Power5 schools — sell out after sell out even with losing seasons or mediocre ones.

  14. Warrior Dave August 11, 2015 12:13 pm

If the decision for a blue chipper to attend a top 10 school with no COA or Hawaii with COA, I think 99 of 100 will go to Top 10 school. I don’t think the $4K would make a difference. However, it may come into play if choosing between mid major schools.

    1. Good point but going into year four we are still floundering near a 105 out of 128 ranking and it will take a good two to three years to dig ourselves out of this predicament. Will fans still be there after a six or seven year drought.

  19. nutmegger August 11, 2015 2:44 pm

#14 Warrior Dave makes a good point.
However you look at it the mid majors are behind the money ball.
I still think that June Jones’ idea to move the mid major season from the fall to the spring to get better TV contracts may be the best solution I’ve heard.

  20. hilorain August 11, 2015 2:59 pm

ST, does the institution need to cover all athletes when paying COA? Does this count athletes with full scholarships, partial scholarships & walkons?

  22. 3-Prong August 11, 2015 5:21 pm

Seems like we are beating our heads against the wall in trying to compete with the Power 5 Conferences in the financial arms race. Today is a good example. Waterhouse gives us a million dollars. We will use $250k of that per year for 2 years to help fund the COA. Total COA funding this year about 1M to pay about $1,000 per athlete. Even Boise is pay $5,000/year.

Agree with nutmegger and JJ. If you can’t join ’em, beat ’em by moving Mid Major football to compete with baseball. Football year ’round! Networks would buy it….where else is the money to compete going to come from!

  23. islandman August 11, 2015 5:59 pm

NCAA is granting/ giving $55,000 to UH for COA this year. How is the amount determined by the NCAA ?

  24. Tempmanoa August 11, 2015 6:32 pm

I think it is a mistake for non-P5 conferences to provide COA stipends. The P5 schools are getting $millions every year in TV money and ticket sales and they should share this with the players. However, where there is no big TV money, it is crazy to try to pay the stipends– a lot of schools like us only have money to pay stipends for a year or so, then what will they do? It also draws a line between the athletes and the students on financial aid and scholarships who are also not allowed to work but but do not get cost of attendance stipends.

  25. A-House August 11, 2015 7:49 pm

little, no, very confused here about the COA. will Matlin show exactly how the $$$ will be distributed/divided among the athletes?

every scholarship athlete, full or partial, receives a COA? thus, covering sports that have to “share” a few ( 5 or 6 ) scholarship $$$ among 15 players?

there still seems to be, IMHO, inequities and ripe for a civil action against the NCAA, UH, UHAD, etc.

and, tempmanoa has a point – why do the mid-majors and lower have to play with COA? how often does a “blue chip” chose UH over a Power5 school? yes, there have been a few, but enough to warrant COA? someone is pulling the wool – it’s all a facade!

  26. lawaia August 11, 2015 7:53 pm

Mahalo Nui Loa to the Alec Waterhouse Charitable Trust. Imua Na Koa Anuenue.

  27. 3-Prong August 11, 2015 8:07 pm

What basically happened was the P5 forced the NCAA to allow them to pay players. If it wasn’t allowed, they were willing to leave the NCAA all together. TV money is the root of all this. With the inability of most mid majors to fully fund COA the inequity is enhanced. Mid majors supposedly have a chance at winning a natiinal championship. The cards continue to get stacked in the P5’s favor.

The bigger they are the harder they fall. LET’S GO BOWS!
