Ursua set to join Warriors

Forty-two months after signing with the UH football team, playmaker John Ursua will be joining the Warriors.

Ursua said he earned admission into UH, and will participate in training camp.

The initial plan calls for Ursua to redshirt this season.

Ursua signed with UH in 2012 with the intent of going on a two-year church mission. But there were procedural snags, and Ursua did not start the mission until 2013. He returned this past spring. Ursua said he and UH coach Norm Chow exchanged letters during his mission. Chow reserved Ursua’s scholarship.

Ursua can be used as a running back, receiver and returner.

Its been so long, I kinda forgot just who is John Ursua. Well, to my surprise, as a 3-star athlete out of Saratoga Springs, Utah, John was also recruited by BYU and Utah. I am thrilled that he has stayed with his commitment to the Warriors.

Great news on Ursua. He reminds me of Gerald Welch. A slippery guy to tackle.

A-House, I don’t think there will be unwanted attention regarding Title IX since all schools know about equal opportunities and benefits for men and women students.

I think the schools would need to figure out how to balance out the COA between male and female student athletes. The balancing of the $$$ could be 85 stipends for the football team and stipends/scholarship $$$ equivalent for the women student athlete/team.

So if the football team has a COA total of $340,000, then an equivalent amount can be divided among the women’s team.

    That’s how I see it.

  14. amela July 30, 2015 9:36 am

I’m glad that Urusa stayed committed to the Warriors.

  16. kevin July 30, 2015 9:52 am

I hope Ursua will have an opportunity to play basketball as well. He was a pretty gifted basketball player in high school.

  17. Maddog50 July 30, 2015 10:20 am

Nice to have Ursua make it. New Media guide is out-nice effort really nice job now on another topic the remaining folks expected to arrive? And the new Uniforms, any body got insight?

  18. Manoa Mist July 30, 2015 12:06 pm

If I was Chow I’d use Ursua this year. There is no tomorrow. People will go nuts if UH doesn’t do well this year. I’d use every tool in my bag to stay alive if I was Norm.

  19. H-Man July 30, 2015 12:20 pm

Thanks for the link, Shoko. It was quite interesting that of all the offensive players,
he mentioned Dylan Collie. Now he’s got my interest.

  20. kapakahi July 30, 2015 12:25 pm

Noticed that #18 (from last season) not listed in the new Media Guide nor on the UH website football roster.

    Hmmm……

  21. ai-eee-soos July 30, 2015 12:40 pm

    off topic …….

You wanna bid for the The Refrigerator’s Supah Bowl Ring ?

Heritage Auctions will oversee the auction at this week’s National Sports Collectors’ Convention in Dallas, Tex., reports Shutdown Corner. Bidding, also available online, will start at $16,000, but estimates indicate the one-of-a-kind ring could garner upwards of $1 million should the competition to procure it heat up.

  22. bowwar July 30, 2015 12:44 pm

I agree with Manoa Mist, they should use Ursua versus redshirt…The time is NOW to make things happen and not keep talent on the shelf unless they can’t break the “two deep.” There is an urgency to show some improvement in the program or start folding the tents.

  23. bowwar July 30, 2015 12:47 pm

Yes, Chow should use Urusa this year.
After the first four games, there will be injuries.

  28. SteveM July 30, 2015 1:46 pm

It was a long road, but Welcome to the Warriors, John Ursua!

  29. Derek July 30, 2015 2:01 pm

Best news of the summer. Ursua made it. Stay healthy John. Stay thirsty, my friend.

  30. haka July 30, 2015 3:41 pm

The late additions to the roster fill it out nicely. The big back and tight end, the DB’s, the touch back kicker; but the literal biggest surprise was on the DL where I see a transfer from Kansas State at 6’1 340. Granted it’s all on paper, but nice additions nonetheless.! Go Warriors!

  31. haka July 30, 2015 3:42 pm

    Forgot about Ursua too! Nice!

  32. Willie July 30, 2015 3:48 pm

News flash, 4 Ohio State players of significance suspended for football opener versus Virginia Tech. So far one game suspension noted. Unofficial chatter mentions due to marijuana and/or academics.

If this was UH, probably would see a much longer suspension period. I guess different standards do apply to the top tier programs compared to the rest of the country.

  33. st. anthony trojan July 30, 2015 3:53 pm

Maybe they should have all players smoke a joint before a game.. be a interesting game huh…

  34. Bryson July 30, 2015 5:23 pm

Haka who was the transfer from Kansas St?

  35. H-Man July 30, 2015 5:26 pm

I also don’t see #31 PK Kainoa McDonald. Did he transfer?

  36. cappie the dog July 30, 2015 5:33 pm

The next Wright start will be on ESPN.

    Can’t wait.

Thanks for the mo-…I mean, memories, at UH.

  37. kahuna July 30, 2015 7:15 pm

I read that two DL leaving KSU…..CJ Reese and Terrell Clinkscales….but read nothing about them coming to Hawaii.

Neither of them 6-1 340 so not sure who Haka talking about. Hope its Reece cause he will have a longer career being only a freshman.

  38. Abunai July 30, 2015 7:27 pm

    #34

I believe he’s talking about Tyson Beaune. He played at KSU the last three years I think.

  39. zuiqiu mi July 30, 2015 7:28 pm

Tyson Beaune DL 6-1 340 Jr. Studio City, Calif. / Kansas State .
Check out this dude. Wide and heavy and seems to know how to play.

  40. kahuna July 30, 2015 7:33 pm

Hm….still read nothing about him coming from KSU.

  41. kahuna July 30, 2015 7:44 pm

Googled his name and all I get is he is a Chatswotth High grad from 2012. Nothing about him being from KState.

  42. el burro sabio July 30, 2015 7:57 pm

The glass is half-full. Hagger, Butler, Davis, Sanchez, Cameron Hayes, and 6-2 320 Kansas St transfer Tyson Beaune are now on the roster.

  43. zuiqiu mi July 30, 2015 8:01 pm

Tyson Beaune DL 6-1 340 Jr. Studio City, Calif. / Kansas State .
He can play two way. I would call him Mr. Pancake.
    Hope he can start…

  44. kahuna July 30, 2015 8:08 pm

My guess is he attended school there but never played since I went back to look at K State’s roster for 2013 and 2014 and did not see his name on the rosters.

Probably a pickup for scout team practice player. Don’t see how someone like him is going to help. No record of him on roster nor record of him playing in games. Even if you a mop up player you still get credited for playing in games….like Sai Tummala when he was a bench warmer for ASU.

This dude has ZERO record of him doing anything at KSU….as far as I can find.

  45. HawaiiMongoose July 30, 2015 8:08 pm

I checked the 2012, 2013 and 2014 KSU rosters and Beaune isn’t listed on any of them.

  46. kahuna July 30, 2015 8:22 pm

The most impressive of the late comers have to be Hagger. 6-6 230 with WR speed and also a double digit scorer for his jc’s basketball team. How we going keep this dude out of the lineup?

Guy is a matchup nightmare and could be the TE UH can finally use as a weapon instead of a decoy.

  47. Maddog50 July 31, 2015 3:09 am

Regarding the K-State transfer I am glad someone else did the research. I looked at several sites and found nothing but HS stuff. Norm Chow does have a long relationship with Bill Snyder so I am sure something got checked out, but no evidence on any roster, although roster typically go 2 maybe 3 deep. Should be interesting who shows up this weekend, as far as I can tell its 5 or six coupla OL a DB an RB and a TE. Hope it all happens
