LB’s status still on hold

Outside linebacker Makani Kema-Kaleiwahea’s status remains uncertain — but hopeful — as the NCAA considers his appeal and subsequent response for an application to play this season.

Citing special family-related circumstances, Kema-Kaleiwahea is seeking an exemption to the rule requiring a player to redshirt after transferring from an FBS school to another. Kema-Kaleiwahea transferred from Arizona to UH in January. An amendment, which goes into effect this fall, initially disallowed any exemptions, even for those who transferred this past spring semester. But then the NCAA amended the amendment to consider the cases of spring-semester transfers. UH then refiled its exemption request.

While there is enough time, if cleared, Kema-Kaleiwahea would factor heavily in the Warriors’ plans this season. He is skilled as a stand-up rusher and cover defender. That hybrid position has been key in the program’s history. The linebacker who can align on the line’s edge was used in double-eagle schemes under Dick Tomey and Bob Wagner. In the 1999 Oahu Bowl, Jeff Ulbrich moved up as a fifth defensive lineman. Most recently, Paipai Falemalu, Tavita Woodard, Beau Yap and TJ Taimatuia played the hybrid role. Kema-Kaleiwahea, who is a lean 250 pounds, has impressive first-step quickness.

What are his chances to be cleared? Do we have a history asking for these exceptions?

    Buffoman:
Everybody tells me he’s got a great chance, and that they’d be shocked if he wasn’t cleared.
Butt this is the NCAA, so we’ll see. But the Warriors are counting on him.

is there a way to go back and review “closed” posts?

or, once it’s closed, it’s closed?

ST was that a typo error using the word “butt” vs the correct spelling of “but” or is that just your sutle way of describing the NCAA.

    ST,

    Where’s Agasiva & Lavaka?

  8. Old School Dave July 4, 2015 10:32 am

Come on, NCAA! Your regs say that, “Exemptions for 4-year transfers not having to sit out a season are typically granted for athletes transferring to schools closer to home for family or academic reasons or due to financial hardship.”

Do the right thing and let Makani play in 2015!
