Update: Mike Edwards
Former Warrior cornerback Mike Edwards always has specialized in returns.
In 2012, he led the nation in kickoff-return yards while also scoring three touchdowns. This summer, he will be back on the field as a member of the U.S. national team that will compete in the International Federation of American Football’s World Championship. The tournament will be played at the Hall of Fame stadium in Canton, Ohio.
“It’s a 45-minute drive,” said Edwards, who lives in the Cleveland area.
Most recently, Edwards played for the L.A. KISS of the Arena Football League.
“I rolled my ankle … and they weren’t willing to pay me on IR,” Edwards said.
He continued training and coaching at Glenville High under his mentor, Ted Ginn Sr. Edwards said he received a call from Thom Kaumeyer, a former UH defensive coordinator who was hired as assistant coach for the U.S. team. In extending an invitation, Kaumeyer told Edwards: “I want you to represent not only the U.S., but represent me.”
“I’m blessed with this opportunity,” Edwards said.
The U.S. team begins training on June 28. The tournament runs July 9-18. Thirty-one of the 32 NFL teams open training camp on July 21 or later.
“You never know what can come of this,” Edwards said. “Maybe somebody will give me a shot or a workout.”
Largely because of financial and family considerations, Edwards opted to forgo his senior season at UH in 2012. He has two children.
“I know it would have helped me if I came back for one more year at Hawaii,” Edwards said. “I don’t regret leaving Hawaii a year early. I regret not being mature enough to view the whole situation, if you know what I mean. I never regret anything. I’ve been blessed by all means. I still have a chance to play (football). Opportunities are still coming up.”
Whoops.
Forgot to mention yesterday that UH will travel 41,376 miles this season.

People gotta do, what they gotta do…Unfortunately, for Mike Edwards, he should have stayed for his Senior year at UH rather than leaving early. I think a good season at UH would have opened doors and UH may have had a better season as well…All water under the bridge, so I hope things work out for him.
With two children, it’s really hard. Good luck to Mike. Maybe something will come out of this opportunity. And much thanks to former UH OC Thom Kaumeyer for giving Mike this opportunity. Awesome gesture.

I finally figured out how to read the Warrior Beat without jumping through hoops. Now all is cool and I have it on my favorites list.
He has a family that he needed to support, which would have been even more difficult to do as a student. I would have done the same as what he done.
Mike Edwards – he was fun to watch. Wonder if he has considered the CFL. Chad O is doing well there.

I hope Wittek is good, because while at USC he was pretty terrible. A close up when he played at USC against UH and started he didn’t play particularly well, was pulled and Cody Kessler came in and did well to win the job the rest of the season. So as I said again, I hope Wittek plays well for us, but his first impression of him to me was not good. This is another year, almost 2 years, so the added reflection, maturity, and growth will help him and the team. We need him to give us solid production at the QB position and good passing efficiency numbers.

Sometimes a change in system can do wonders to a QBs performance. It’s unknown how he’ll do but I don’t think what he did at USC is necessarily what we’ll see at UH.

unfortunately for UH, the most recent QB transplants had impressive credentials out of high school, ranked 4 ****, but last one was not able to help with all his injuries
I too was not impressed with Wittek against UH 4 years ago – hope, as Derek mentions, that he will be a much improved player come 9/2/2015!!!

True it takes the whole offense for the QB to do well but it all starts with the QB. Last year was hard to watch when a wide open RB or receiver had the ball thrown to his feet or overthrown.

A few days ago, someone asked about a countdown clock to the UH season opener… is there such a thing? 😉
Mel Davis (Santa Monica CC) and Paul Harris (Ventura CC) are two JC running backs that are part of the 2015 signing class. Davis is a big back (6-2/235) and Harris was recruited primarily as a kick returner (5-11/190).
Kaumeyer is not listed as a coach for the National team. But Dan Morrison is, as the Receivers coach. Also, B J Beatty from Colorado and Kaawa, HI is on the roster as a LB.
Three games in 6 to 9 days, with two days of rest between games, is a brutal schedule for football.

#24 If the receivers drops passes in their hands from the QB it usually equals to having little faith in where the QB is going to hit them. Is it going to be high or low? Oh snap its in the chest! Drop.
Guess the coaches decided to name Wittek the starter given that they told Phil Steele this and everyone expected it. I am in the minority after watching the last few practices, where Woolsey performed well in the new offense, Wittek threw a lot of interceptions, and objectively, the two were near even in most respects despite Wittek taking twice as many reps as Woolsey. I thought the coaches should have kept the competition going and given a few more reps to Woolsey who also came out of high school in California as the 8th rated prostyle QB nationally (247 and CBS Sports). Not saying Wittek is junk, but he does not look like the clear winner yet.
What? No matter where it’s thrown, if it’s catchable then catch it.

Not saying he hasn’t improved or anything, but don’t forget last season where it was said over and over how well Ikaika looked during practice but it never really did translate to game day.

Steven Souza Jr. of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, who is leading all rookies in home runs, has a lot of family in Hawaii.
He is almost local.
His uncle, who I used to work with, told me that his sister is the only sibling who moved away to the mainland. Specifically, Washington state.
He seems to be a Dave Kingman-type. Lots of home runs, lots of strikeouts.
I’m surprised Washington let him go.
He caught the final out during the Nationals’ season finale, in which Ryan Zimmerman threw a no-hitter. It was a highlight worthy grab.
He is an AL Rookie of the Year candidate.
I’m surprised that Ian Kahaloa isn’t in Baseball America’s current listing of top high school prospects.
Unless some team thinks otherwise, it looks as if Kahaloa has fallen out of the first ten rounds.

after last year Ikakai was giving every chance by chow game after game !! at the end of the season u could see he was starting to grow as qb !!
with max as the 1st qb might light a fire in Ikakai to work harder !! would not be a shock to see as starting QB couple games into the season !! one thing for sure we know and chow know Ikakai has game speed !! for max he looks the best on paper and pratices field !! game speed that the one !! and one on one can teach is heart !! go bow best luck max chow and company !! let play some football!!
For once I am not second guessing Chow’s decision of him naming Wittek as his starting QB at this juncture (today) instead of him waiting it out to make a decision during fall camp. The less song and dance, drama and pressure gives his choice, Wittek, more confidence going into the season. A decisive decision by Chow, now, lets his QB to get mentally prepared over the summer, where it just might add to him giving it a little more extra in workouts and film study. Plus it fuels last year’s starter to have steam coming out of his ears so he pushes Chow’s pick of Wittek. This is win, win.
Chows been around the game long enough to see who’s 1 and who’s 2. And sometimes Chows been accused of not seeing the forest for the trees. But in this case Chow has seen Wittek throughout last seasons fall practices and the just completed spring camp to make the right choice. I agree. Take away some of the tentativeness and rust away from Wittek (I’ve seen him at one practice)…he is going to be okay.
In conclusion, Chow’s move frees up the media hounding of who his QB is going to be entering fall camp, allows the coaches faith in his QB to potentially grow and blossom and sends a message to the opposition that these are his cards and he is playing them confidently. I like this.
