Quinton Pedroza
Quinton Pedroza
Quinton Pedroza could have been a “whatever happened to …” subject.

Three years ago, an underaged drinking violation led to a suspension and then departure from the Utah football team. It was a disappointing parting for a player who played in 14 games in two years and was projected to be the Utes’ starting wideout and kickoff returner.

Pedroza then reconnected with UH coach Norm Chow, who was the Utes’ offensive coordinator in 2011. Pedroza transferred to UH in August 2013, where he was reunited with Luke Matthews, a former Utah wideout who was the Warriors’ graduate assistant coach at the time. Matthews and Pedroza were road roommates with the Utes.

Pedroza redshirted in 2013, in accordance with NCAA transfer rules, and rotated between wideout and slotback in 2014. Matthews also was promoted to full-time assistant coach last year.

Earlier this week, Pedroza received full medical clearance from a foot injury that limited him during spring training.

On Saturday, Pedroza, who has a year of eligibility remaining, will earn a bachelor’s degree — with honors.

Pedroza is the testament to the adage: It’s not how you start but how you finish.

Not only graduating but with honors. What an accomplishment. Q, good luck in the future and hope you have an injury free year.

    Alright, Q!

  6. Stephen Tsai May 14, 2015 8:30 am

It should be an interesting competition at slotback with Pedroza and Dylan Collie. I think Ryan Pasoquen gets added to the mix, too.

  7. Da Punchbowl Kid May 14, 2015 8:41 am

    Good for Mr. Pedroza!

Looking forward to seeing him on the field next season. Where is Stubblefield going to be playing at?

  8. Ipu Man May 14, 2015 8:44 am

Way to go Pedro-za. Bet the NFL will like you, too.
You should call yourself: iq …then we can say “Hi, iq!”
    🙂

  9. Stephen Tsai May 14, 2015 8:46 am

From what I understand, Stubblefield will be playing left wideout.
They did away with X, Z, Y and all those other letters.
Now it’s simply, left, right, tight end, slotback.
From what I understand — and I could be wrong, plus I have selective ADD — it’s Kemp and Stubblefield on the left, Ewaliko and Barker on the right, and Pedroza and Collie in the slot.
UH is supposed to release a depth chart this afternoon. There probably will be a lot of and/or on the chart.

Am I the only one that doesn’t see all the new posts on the main Warrior Beat blog page? The latest one I see is the Graham one, so I had to go to the bottom of the page, click ST’s link to the new blog, then do it again for yesterday’s blog.

Here’s the main Warrior Beat blog website:

    Good morning everyone!

Congrats to Quinton Pedroza for graduating…and with honors!
Great to have one more year to give football the “old college try”.

  12. Da Punchbowl Kid May 14, 2015 9:38 am

rage777 – I get the same problem. Must be a tech issue.

  13. jm2375 May 14, 2015 9:40 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Congrats to Mr. Pedroza and all those graduating on Saturday.

    rage777 – #10 – I thot it was jus me. 🙄

  14. rage777 May 14, 2015 9:47 am

OK, thanks DPK and jm, I also thought it was just me. Probably the reason why there are so little comments these days.

  15. A-House May 14, 2015 10:11 am

here I thought my lap top was slow because we are in Orlando – visited Universal Studio and both Harry Potter attractions.

hot, humid, BUT no rain when it was projected to thunder storm the past 4 days with the same tomorrow – sore legs for walking so much – had to take a much needed “nap” each afternoon back in the room

On Tuesday, 2 younger ladies yelled out “UH” when they saw my Warrior shirt – both were students at UH and visiting Harry Potter World at Universal Studio

Today, ran into a husband/wife who moved to Austin, TX about 9 months ago – they were also purchasing “zodiac” sign pendants – Mrs A-house bought 2 pendants

like any main attraction on the mainland, prices are out of sight for everything including food – where is Vegas when you need it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hoping we will miss the severe thunder storms in Houston tomorrow – our connecting flight departs at 11:30 am CDST – on the way over, we were on the tarmac for 1 1/2 hours waiting for the thunder storms to clear out of Houston

tired, but happy that we got to visit each Harry Potter attractions for 3 days and purchased all that we intended and some – whew, what will the plastic card amount be at the next billing cycle????????

that’s OK, this will probably be our once in our life time for me and Mrs.

great news about Joey, Pedroza and Lisha and all who were recognized – we do not forget all their team mates in 2014-2015 season!

  16. BigFan May 14, 2015 10:24 am

rage777, got the same problem. Tried different things but didn’t work. I hope it gets fixed. Otherwise, if it continues and we have 10+ daily blogs to backtrack to get to the current topic, you will lose everyone.

  17. jeezy33 May 14, 2015 10:27 am

Honestly don’t know why Kemp isn’t a slot. I know its kind of late now but I would rather use his big catch radius in the middle of the field, and have more speed on the outside to stretch the field. He can move outside for red zone situations, but he’d be more effective in slot. With Stubblefield thriving on hitches, and ewaliko stretching the field deep.

  18. PONO May 14, 2015 10:38 am

Congrats to Pedroza. Now he can work on a Master’s degree while playing football in paradise.

  19. lopaka43 May 14, 2015 11:03 am

agree with those above reporting tech problems. Star-Advertiser main page and blog page stuck on blog about Graham. Only way to get to current blog post is through end of blog message with link to the new blog post. Without trying that most probably assume there has not been a new blog post since the Graham post.

Everyone deserves a second chance, when no one wanted to recruit Pisa Tinoisamoa because of legal issues, June Jones gave him a shot. From the looks of him speaking at the NFL Draft, Pisa not only turned into a superb football player but he also turned into a fine human being.

  25. Stephen Tsai May 14, 2015 1:02 pm

    OK, blog is acting weird.

  26. Stephen Tsai May 14, 2015 1:03 pm

    Re: #9

    ST,

    What’s up with Vasquez Haynes?

  28. st. anthony trojan May 14, 2015 1:11 pm

Yea Inyoface….some are lucky when young n not get caught for their transgressions…but the really lucky ones get caught….n have to pay… n are given a second chance like you mentioned….n make the most of it…n like you say…”turned into a fine human being.”….

While others…that get away with it…eventually get caught…n then have to pay dearlt…cuz they think…the world owe them a living…Hernandez….the USC QB .FROM THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS AGO…..the cleveland quarterback…etc…etc…sports pages are replete with these examples…those who think…they can get away with it…cuz they never got caught…pisa n Q should be happy they were giving one more chance when their infractions were small time…
and stepped up n made their loved ones n friends n coaches proud of them…

I hope that she can properly write coaches contracts, without UH being ripped off.

The former chief attorney for the city is expected to join the University of Hawaii as general counsel.

UH President David Lassner is recommending the appointment of Carrie Okinaga as vice president for legal affairs and university general counsel. She currently is general counsel at First Hawaiian Bank and serves on the board for the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation, a post she would step down from if hired by UH.

    SA news.

    Stephen –
“I couldn’t even find today’s post at the office.”

Would that be the “Post Office”? 😆 Try checking back tomorrow – sometimes there’s a one day delay before we see the posts.

    WTG Q!

Congratulations to all the graduates this weekend and a BEEG MAHALO to all the Seniors who are finishing up their careers at UH at the close of the school year!

  36. kapakahi May 14, 2015 4:29 pm

    ST,

Any chance that SB John Ursua (former UH signee) can still qualify to be eligible for this coming 2015 season?

  37. FCWarrior May 14, 2015 5:40 pm

Good story on Pedrosa. Good luck this year

  38. mytake May 14, 2015 7:21 pm

Some of UH’s best players were on the wrong side of the law. Besides Pisa there was Davon Bess, Colt Brennan and, Attrice Brooks I believe his name was. All June Jones recruits. UH couldn’t recruit guys like this in there wildest dreams. Chow has to get off his higher than holy horse he sits on and start going after these talents. You can go after “good kids” but if they can’t win you games than what’s the point. Football’s a nasty sport. You need nasty guys. I’ll take the Miami Hurricanes with Jimmy Johnson and all the boyz in the hood if it means winning games. “Good kids”, give me a break!

  39. el burro sabio May 14, 2015 7:57 pm

    See Luke Shawley

Guud Evening…RIP BB King…lost another legend

Fantastic Softball playoffs…Kam goes down 14-2-1 season not to shabby.

  41. beans May 14, 2015 10:29 pm

    MYTAKE #37
So”nasty kids” should take preference over “good kids”? I don’t buy in. I guess I sit on a high horse with Chow too. I would rather have my son play on a losing team with solid young men as teammates and coaches than on a winning team with hoodlums. Just my perspective. And may I add that I respect Chow as he relates to his players.

  42. Maddog50 May 15, 2015 3:34 am

A true legend has departed with the passing of BB King. Saw him several times along with many of the Blues Greats. Had a chance to go to Theresa’ Lounge in the mid 70’s Buddy Guy Junior Wells BB King Muddy Waters you name it they played there. Theresa Needham was the “godmother” of the Blues. Taught and coached her grandson so we had front row seats for the best—if you are ever in Chicago Buddy Guys “Legends” or Kingston Mines would be the venue of choice for this entertainment. Late in the evening Buddy shows up and does his meet and greet-have a shirt signed by him that will never see the light of day!!!

  43. Don Weir May 15, 2015 6:37 am

    Maddog50,
I located a throwback jersey with the number 50 on it.
It will be in the package for your UH soiree this summer.
