Big Hilo Fan 2
For the past week, I’ve been trying to find the words to capsulize the life of Gerard Lee Loy. I’m still trying. But there are too many stories, too many adventures, too many good deeds.
He was a champion for the underdogs, which was fitting because those were his peers.
He used his power as an attorney and glib speaker to fight for people and causes needing a voice. Much of his work was pro bono.
He believed in the four Fs — family, friends, food and, of course, football. The latter was how this blog first was introduced to BigHiloFan2. Tailgates, karaoke nights, football games …
There was a time when BigHiloFan2 was concerned about the athletic department’s shortfalls. He traveled to Oahu, marched into the AD’s office without an appointment, and came away with some answers. BHF2 and several other blog regulars organized a drive to raise money to purchase exercise bikes for the Warriors.
There was the karaoke night when I tried to sing falsetto. Afterward, BHF2 stared at me and said: “That was awful.” He was right, of course. And that was BHF2: Honest, blunt, purposeful.
He will be missed.
Lived in Hilo many years….neva met the man….but from what was n has been written…wish we had more like him..

God rest a truly great man in peace.
Big Hilo was big man, full of aloha for the world and those around him. There are any many folks in this world who owe him a debt of gratitude, and many many more are proud to call him a friend. He had helped my Hilo family on more than one occasion. He was also the patriarch of his family, a “power Uncle” to all of his kin.
Safe to say, the good Lord made him and broke the mold. Our world is greatly diminished by hiss passing

ST ~ You making me cry. Listening to Waika & reading about BHF2. Gonna miss the big guy. Didn’t he have the JUGS machine fixed? Just did it. Like the Nike slogan. Big heart. He’ll be cheering in the end zone in heaven. Aloha e ku’u hoa.
Does Mark Takai still read the blog? Eh, Mark, one of my hula sistahs gonna try meet up wich you at the Kamehameha celebration at the Capital next month.
Maybe I’ll get to see some of you next month. My son’s getting married! A hui hou!

Happy lunch hour. What a guy? I like Hilo Big Island too. Never met him, but yes, he will be missed. A fond farewell to you.
My sources have confirmed that Naole is gone. Chow pissed him off. Will nothing be said of his departure like the mysterious disappearance of Jordan Wynn? Lucky we got Stephen to at least tell us Wynn ain’t coming back. Maybe this is like the spring game we weren’t going to have but then they did have at No Aloha. Or the coaches telling Stephen they didn’t keep stats – yeah, right.
UH must rid itself of Mr. Chow. The sooner the better. Period.
I heard the paperwork for Naole Dismissal isn’t finalize and still working on an compromise on final paychecks.
That’s why no employees or Staffers can Discuss the situation.
It’s what a friend son who goes to UH told me.
It’s all rumas till someone employee at UH Says otherwise.
I think everyone who “heard” something isn’t “hearing” anything. They had an argument. People have arguments all the time. Nobody is going anywhere.
Naole sounds like he had enough!

I always enjoyed BHF2’s posts. Positive, passionate and often times humorous. He will be missed by many. Peace be with him.

I remember when BHF2 started posting comments, someone posted suggesting that there was another Tsaiko who already was using Big Hilo Fan nic. No problem…he simply became BigHiloFan2.
Azz how he was…no fuss ovah the manini stuff, just git er done! Aloha, Gerard. See you again someday. I hope we get good seats!
Mrs. Bighilofan2 announced on Facebook that the service for Gerard will be on Monday, May 25, 2015 at “the gym in Keaukaha”. Visitation from 9:00 am with his Celebration of Life at 11:00 pm.
Arrangements are still underway.
She shared an interesting story a week ago which we have no trouble believing: She and Gerard were on the sidewalk near home in Hilo when Gerard spotted the beleaguered Hilo mayor, Billy Kenoi, marching in a May Day parade. She was exasperated when he suddenly decided to join the parade, walking next to and talking with the mayor. He left the parade when it passed his office.
Bighilofan2 was not larger than life… he just lived large.
He now joins Long Time UH Fan and rasu begasu (las vegas)… what a reunion that will be!
Rest In Peace, Big Hilo Fan 2.
Without going into specifics, BHF2’s daughter posted on FB about the morning he passed.

Yes people do argue over many different things….but you would think by now…after 3 years…they would be both on the same page…n not have ne thing to argue about…
Sum people are not born leaders… n can’t be trained to be one…cuz of this or that…mostly that…guess being heavy handed…if so… is bringing more n more gloom to the once hallowed program…maybe is the great shibai put up by a older strong willed man…n trying to show strength…from the point of view with a very dismal record…n maybe another DR N NC SPAT LIKE START OF LAST SEASON ??….LET THE RUMORS CONTINUE.. Yes, lot of peeps have stories about the BigHilo. I keep seeing him in his foam Warrior helmet. The first time I saw him wearing it I thought, eh.. who da guy?
It was after a game and he came back to the t-gate wearing the helmet. Started talking with him and it was hilarious.

Yea ur so right nightingale….but in this case…many on here are wishing for a break-up…just most me thinks and the sentiment is for the OL coach… NOT …be the one to go…sort of wishful thinking for sum on here…
The thing is…ur so correct…arguments happen all the time…with friends n spouses…but in business it should never ever happen…if the CEO…was akamai…he would have head it off at the pass…it always takes 2 people to make an ARGUMENT…the boss man should never stoop down to that level….ever…as the CEO…he is losing ground…when he is involved with staff…n should have a common sense to step away…n arguments with fans or customers is even worst…
Have you ever heard 2 people argue…in a regular voice….usually one raises his/her voice….keep calm…. no talk loud…then ok…is called discussion…coaches have big time problems…especially if ur record speaks volumes of losses…n human nature being what is…coaches will start to jump fences…if not already…n align one way or the other…especially not good for OL PLAYERS…LOYALTY…is paramount for success…time for both to kuli kuli…
It’s hard to keep the chin up when our best Warriors are falling during these times when they are most needed. The ones who would rush forward to beat back the foe or solve the most difficult problems.
Big Hilo, you’ll always be big in our memories. Thank-you for being a huge part of the Tsaiko ohana and an inspiration for us all. bg

Couple tings—A Warrior fan will always be a friend of mine, that being said RIP BHF2-Regarding this latest bout of unnecessary drama as it pertains to the Coaching staff, learned a long time ago, discretion is the better part of valor. Hope it goes away and everything remains intact. Last ting, this nonsense of UH Athletics asking for a so called bailout-nonsense. If the study provided to the State regarding the impact of UH SPORTS and its direct tie to 60 plus million into the state economy all that is requested is a reinvest of a dime on the dollar! The travel subsidy money UH pays, a large portion goes right back in to the economy. Time to call BS on the whole deal and do the right thing! Other than that-Go Warriors!!!!
Don’t know is Big Chris is leaving or not, but there is a lot of speculation out there–and innuendo. For the many who have never been in a locker room, fights among coaches –even fisticuffs–is not uncommon. Think about it, working 24-7, in a pressure and testosterone filled sport with other competitive men–happens all the time. Nothing to see folks, move along…
It was a privilege to meet Big Hilo Fan 2 at the various tailgates and cattle calls and his company and musings were always a pleasure. I will sincerely miss him, though his spirit and memory will live on.
