Wait watchers

People in the know insist that the volleyball Warriors have a very good chance of earning a play-in berth in next week’s NCAA tournament if UC Irvine beats Pepperdine tonight.

Irvine, No. 1 nationally and in the MPSF playoffs, is assured an NCAA berth no matter tonight’s outcome. If Pepperdine wins the MPSF title match, it receives the league’s automatic berth and Irvine gets an at-large spot. If Irvine wins, the belief is that UH has a good enough “resume” — checkoffs in the nine-point criteria — to earn the play-in berth ahead of Pepperdine.

Of course, anything can happen when left to a selection committee. But the Warriors will attend tonight’s title match. If Pepperdine wins, the Warriors will head to Honolulu on Saturday. If Irvine wins, the Warriors will stick for the NCAA field to be announced at 7:30 a.m. (Hawaii time) on Saturday.

* * * * *

Former UH running back Joey Iosefa also will be in the proverbial waiting room as a hopeful late-round draft choice. Linebacker Aaron Brown was the last Warrior drafted, when he was picked in the seventh round in 2012.

UH defensive end Beau Yap hopes to earn a free-agent look. The thing is, with his build, speed and genes, Yap probably would be a pretty good fullback.

* * * * *

For those wondering, this is how yesterday’s first-round picks did against UH.

> Leonard Williams, DT, USC — (8/29/13): 4 tackles, 2 sacks; (9/1/12): 2 tackles, 1 sack, 1 fumble recovery.

> Danny Shelton, NT, Washington — ((8/30/14): 12 tackles, two sacks, 3 tackles for losses.

> Nelson Agholor, WR, USC — (8/29/13): 2 catches, 35 yards, 1 TD; (9/1/12): 1 catch, 6 yards.

> Shaq Thompson, OLB, Washington — (8/30/14): 4 tackles pass breakup.

I do like the college atmosphere in the Bren Center.
Smallish arena — something like 5,000 for court events — but it’s mostly a student crowd. Very enthusiastic. Then again, USC seems to bring out the best in crowds.

Here’s hoping for the best for our former Warriors.

It will be ironic if Beau Yap gets a good look as a fullback in the NFL, as his Dad (i.e. Boyd) was a great HS & UH running back. I think Beau would actually be a good fullback in the NFL if given a chance.

“Waves wash over Rainbow volleyball” cute headline.

    “Waves crash over the Rainbow”
    “Rogue Waves wipe out Rainbows”
    “Pepperdine Waves goodbye”

Oh well, have faith in others to get to the promised land. It’s tough when you lose control over your destiny.

    GO PACQUIAO!

Defense bill steers $469.7M to isles

  11. truegreen May 1, 2015 10:46 am

The Bren Center looks like a arena for its size. Although I spent half the match trying to figure out what that logo design on the court was supposed to be. Any idea?

  12. truegreen May 1, 2015 10:46 am

    *nice arena

#6 bowwar: *ding ding ding* Excellent use of the word “ironic.” That outcome would indeed be ironic because it’s the opposite of what you would expect–that his dad was the RB but Beau, a *defensive* player, would end up as a RB in the pros.

What a tough loss yesterday… I still feel “hungover” from the match. Anyways, good luck to the Warriors in the draft. I hope they get picked up today. If not tomorrow. Go Bows!

No matter what happens 2 day… my feelings is negative…they will not go ne where… but stay home…

Is their own doings…they had n opportunity at BYU… n proved to be disasterous sad to say…

The past is my insight…no bid will be coming our way….wish was not so…but better to cry now then later…hope u all pray that I am wrong again…he he he
JUST AS WELL CRY 4 THE PAC MAN ALSO…use same towel is ok…he he he

    Hawaiians say… mina mina…

    If Pepperdine wins…we are a dead meat…so sad huh…

But is ok….the promise land is in sight…2 out of 3 wins for foist 3 games is….excellent for me…our NEW QB…will lead us out of the doldrums….wooo hooo….
Happy times will be here again…

Not optimistic about mens VB and NCAA championship. We have lost 3 out of our last 4 games. It feels like we peaked too soon. Senior night was awesome. We played lights out and the ceremony was perfect. I don’t know if this sort of emotional and ceremonial “end” took the bite and hunger out of the team prematurely, but something seemed to. I hope we do get another chance to play this year. But if we do we will have to get our edge back quickly or the results will be the same. However it turns out it was a great season on the whole and it’s fun to have winner to watch.

  18. hitman May 1, 2015 12:08 pm

aloha everyone!! and good morning and happy aloha friday!!
    nb# 16 well said !!
nb#17 so true i was just thinking that too !! we peaked too soon !!
watching the game it so e z to see there no place like hawaii !! the fans are da best!! just like a extra man out there !!

  19. oneseason May 1, 2015 12:22 pm

16 wins in a row spoils us maybe. It does make a good case for the “body of work” argument for a post-season spot. I would like to see UH play in the NCAA tournament, but mostly can’t wait for next season.

  20. NorthShoreFan May 1, 2015 12:36 pm

    Guud Afternoon Tsaikos…bootiful day.

sun is shining bright but still in a fog. what da heck happened?!?!!@#@!?
hope we get an invite to the dance. me do not trust the NCAA. the organization is infected with cronyism and small balls. imho…
if we get invited, Warriors have got to take hold of their own game and play like they can….IMUA WARRIORS!

  21. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2015 1:02 pm

    It is a weird dance.
It actually is the NCAA final four (lower case), with two play-in matches that will be at the tournament site (Stanford) but not count as part of the tournament.
    Go figure.

  22. bouncingball May 1, 2015 2:28 pm

Yap as fullback, seriously? That’s beyond clueless. There has been no serious draft picks from UH the last 2 years under Chow and that string will continue as long as Chow remains the head coach. A damning indictment of Chow time and how he’s killing UH football and UH athletics as a whole.
Congrats to UH men’s volleyball, even with less than stellar end of season play. As a whole UH athletics did some really good things, too bad the overhanging stink from football diminishes all other accomplishments.

  23. Da Punchbowl Kid May 1, 2015 2:29 pm

Mahalo to the Men’s Volleyball Team for a great season. A bunch of good guys and great competitors. I hope they can get to the “Dance”, because they can shine there. Imua!

Crossing fingers for the rest of the draft. Good for Marcus Mariota!

  24. cappie the dog May 1, 2015 2:48 pm

    10.

    Two snubs come to mind.

    1. 1993-94 women’s basketball team.
This was the last 48-team tournament format. You would think they’d be
among the hypothetical 16. What I remember most about the fallout
following the announcement of the field, was tournament chairwoman
Judith Holland telling Coach Goo that Hawaii’s two victories against
nationally-ranked UNLV didn’t matter because the games were played at
home. When the WNIT came calling, Goo said something along the lines
of don’t insult my team; thanks, but no thanks. Goo also wondered aloud
if he was being punished for being a man. The Na Wahine had a
significantly higher RPI than San Diego State. That’s the team I remember.

    2. 1989-90 men’s basketball team
Only because BYU got in, but not Hawaii, a team we had beaten TWICE
    that season.

Good luck to the men’s volleyball team.

  25. NorthShoreFan May 1, 2015 3:08 pm

ncaa does what it wants. no rhyme or reason. just no piss them off then they get after your butt..unless you get plenty money, ie. North Carolina athletics…can do no wrong. use jocks who fake classes and pass, have professors who help out with bogus classes, recorded misdeeds for years, results?….nothing, no problem, carry on as usual.
ncaa got many reasons to do what they do….it’s called money and plenty of it.
does it sound like I’m disappointed with the ncaa?….nah…just amazed at the blatant bs that they dish out.

  26. HawaiiMongoose May 1, 2015 3:27 pm

I distrust the NCAA. I expect UH to be left out.

  27. cappie the dog May 1, 2015 3:52 pm

With bracketology, and all these on-line outlets projecting what teams are tournament-worthy, I think it’s getting harder for selection committees to pull any shennanigans. It keeps them in check.

Is there somebody out there projecting a men’s volleyball tournament field?

I was looking for a women’s water polo site after Hawaii got past their semifinal match against CSUN.

If there is a Joe Lunardi-type involved with men’s volleyball, Hawaii should get a fair shake.

Hoping for the best that my boys make the trip to Palo Alto next week.

  29. seewhy May 1, 2015 5:02 pm

Interesting pick from the 3rd round. Arizona Cardinals just drafted David Johnson from Northern Iowa. Yes, the same team that played at Aloha Stadium last year. In that game, Johnson had 46 yds on 18 carries.

  30. Inyoface May 1, 2015 5:07 pm

Not much news on spring training this year. Either that’s bad news or st is too busy covering the vowwybows.

  31. pollypicador May 1, 2015 5:48 pm

Bighilo held no biases. Was very passionate about his Warrior football. And he shared words with everyone-even the bad guys on this blog…and that’s why I liked him. It made me stop in my tracks, as I read about the sad news in #28. One can wish a Chow victory, but I would be content in meeting the Bighilo types in this world (this I promise). He had that effect, aura and image on me…an observant listener- as he was a speaker. He was a mover and shaker (see exercise bike contributions, neighbor island trips to tailgates and games). To the family and friends, my respects.

  32. H-man May 1, 2015 6:01 pm

Does anyone know if there will be a spring football practice tomorrow and what time if one is scheduled? The Hawaii 2015 Spring Roster handout, last page, shows a practice schedule calendar and indicates “TBA” for tomorrow, May 2.

Shocked to learn of Bighilofan2 (Gerard Lee Loy) passing. RIP

We learned this essentially from his daughter posting on Facebook. Apparently he passed away today under hospital care. His daughter, wife, and a few others were present.

  39. Da Punchbowl Kid May 1, 2015 11:46 pm

On the passing of my friend, Gerard Lee Loy, aka BHF2, it is indeed a sad day. A super supporter of Warrior football and the Tsaikos, he will be missed. To his family, relatives, and friends, I bow to you BHF2 on your passing and may your passion and traditions never be forgotten. Mahalo nui loa.

It was a beautiful day yesterday for a great Tsaiko, Big HiloFan 2, to move on to the great sideline in the sky.

Aloha Gerard Lee Loy! We will miss you cheering on our Warriors but will think of you often knowing that you are with las vegas, Florida Ted, Calvin from Kona and Longtime UH Fan yelling and hootin’ for all heck!

  43. 702WarriorFan May 2, 2015 6:10 am

    AUWE

Sorry to hear about the passing of BigHilofan2 (Gerard Lee Loy), a terrific guy and big booster of UH football. The budget for football was fairly limited – and still is – and I recall he was the forerunner of Coaches Choice and drummed up support from the Tsaikos for the exercise bike you see on the sidelines, the JUG machines etc.

He will be missed, not only by the Tsakos who knew him but by the legal community and the clients that he served.

    Aloha my friend.

Very sad to hear of BHF2’s passing. Best wishes to all family and friends.

  50. Hauoli_77 May 2, 2015 8:02 am

I hope that Charlie Wade has a truly unique, but NOT TOO far fetched game plan for this bout vs. Penn State. The post-season teams and coaching staff (game planning) tends to be much more “ready” for the post-season type competition than UH (e.g. women’s volleyball, men’s basketball, etc.). We peak during season and ride the high-ranking recognition throughout only to taper off when it really counts. I hope we can punch it in and get to the championship game with force and battle with fierceness…GO BOWS!
