Passi to finish career at Chaminade

I’m sure many have wondered where Passi would end up playing. the former Wahine Passi use her final year of eligibility to play for Chaminade.

She is part of the 2015 class announced by the school Tuesday.
Passi joins freshmen setter Skyler Curry of Westlake High and middle Daisia LaBrie from Norco High (both California schools). The Silverswords are coached by Kahala Kabalis Hoke,

re #19 on last thread. Cindy, you mentioned that Burns signed a “scholarship agreement”. Do you know if that is a universal term used by all universities or whether other schools might call it something different? The reason I ask is that I just read a release on the calbears.com site today that mentioned that their three 2015 recruits each signed a “Statement of Intent to Register”. I wonder if they are essentially the same thing.

  2. 808 April 21, 2015 4:34 pm

Good luck to Keani. I hope she does well with the Silverswords.

  3. hollycow April 21, 2015 5:14 pm

Cindy, continuing my rant on Shoji’s no evaluation comments on the 4 recruits for this Fall. I’ve read many comments on their college sites of the head coaches evaluation of their recruits for this coming Fall, signed NLIs, transfers or otherwise . What makes Shoji’s position any different? No bigge but I haven’t read or heard any specific reason, why not.

  4. Cindy Luis April 21, 2015 5:15 pm

    1. don’t know. Perhaps that’s what Cal calls its NLIs. Those three are all high school players and I believe it’s their first signing.
I just know that NLIs and scholarship agreements are different. you can only sign one NLI. if you transfer, then it is called a scholarship agreement.

  5. Cindy Luis April 21, 2015 5:24 pm

    3. you are welcome to rant but I wouldn’t put it on the coach.
Shoji can speak about the three who have signed NLIs. UH just never put out a release to officially announce the three, that’s when he would have had statements on them.
If you remember, the three didn’t send in their NLIs together, kind of were strung out. They waited for all three then apparently the release fell through the cracks as the season continued.
    As you said, no biggie.

  6. hollycow April 21, 2015 5:37 pm

    5. Guess this one is on the SID, lol.

  7. hollycow April 21, 2015 5:45 pm

continuing, just my interest and some other bloggers, questions answered of whether he feels the recruit is ready to contribute immediately, his opinion of the recruits present skill level or even a candidate to possibly redshirt for future development.

  8. Setaone April 21, 2015 7:11 pm

This is in response to the middles who can’t “hit out of a paper bag”….

Recent middles who were good hitters:
    Aldopho
    Magill
    Hartong
    Kaufman
    Prince
    Sanders

  9. A View From Afar April 21, 2015 7:37 pm

#1, I believe the UC “Statement of Intent to Register” has nothing to do with athletic NLIs. In the UC (University of California system) context, the “Statement of Intent to Register” just means that they intend to register at that particular UC campus (Berkeley in this case) and are thus surrendering their spots at other UC campuses they were accepted to. In other words, once you sign an “Statement of Intent to Register” for one UC campus, you can no longer register at another UC campus. You could still register at a non-UC school (e.g. Stanford). Of course if you already signed a NLI to go to Cal, but decide to go elsewhere, then the usual rules about transferring and possibly sitting out a year apply.

  10. warriorfan April 21, 2015 7:43 pm

Great get for Chaminade, I think passi will be dominant in division 2.

  11. oldtimer808 April 21, 2015 9:08 pm

Very happy for Passi playing for Chaminade to finish out her career in Hawaii. She will be very effective at this level.

  12. Cindy Luis April 21, 2015 10:18 pm

    6. Which is why I know the topic was discussed back in November and I gave the same explanation. People blamed the SID then as well. Remember pointing out that SID had just had men’s basketball dumped on him around that time and had to deal with the NCAA investigation, Arnold situation, Fotu leaving, etc.

  13. Cindy Luis April 21, 2015 10:21 pm

    9. but if you look at the Cal website, it is announcing the signing of these players and they use the phrase Intent to Register. with pictures of the athletes wearing a Cal hat.

  14. bouncingball April 22, 2015 7:19 am

#8, none of them were consistent power hitter, as I said “good” players. not “great”. All of them couldn’t stack up against top teams in post season which I actually saw (when it was here).

  15. bouncingball April 22, 2015 7:25 am

As for Cindy’s lame excuse about redshirting or riding the bench for future contribution – that tells you how much she’s out of touch with modern reality of top level athletics. Top programs do not bring in freshmen to redshirt (just completed men’s basketball is a good example). The days of freshmen sitting out a year two only applies to middling or bad programs who can’t recruit top freshmen athletes. Cindy, are you implying UH is this boat?

  16. tongo April 22, 2015 8:14 am

#14 On the UH Circle of Honor, and you will see the 1987 team that won the last UH national championship. The starting All-American MB on that team was Suzanne Eagye who was the most incredibly awkward volleyball player that I ever saw come into the program. At 6’3″, with a strong frame, her hitting was wimpy and pathetic. By her senior year, she was a powerful dominating All-American MB. No one knows whether Burns will become another Suzanne – not even Shoji. It is why we play the game! Watching the video of Burns, she looks naturally quick and athletic. She will be good one, and with a little luck – a great one.

  17. A View From Afar April 22, 2015 8:21 am

#13 Cindy, the UC Statement of Intent to Register is a UC system-wide form that ALL incoming freshmen must complete to indicate which one (if any) of the UC campuses they were accepted to they are going to attend. You can only send your SIR to one UC campus. The posting on the Cal website just means they can’t register at a different UC campus they might have been accepted to. And of course if they signed a conference athletic letter of intent they can’t change their mind and go to a non-UC school in the same conference (e.g. Standford or Arizona) without the NCAA transfer rules getting involved. And likewise if they signed a national athletic letter of intent, they can’t attend a non-PAC-12 school (e.g. Texas) without tangling with the NCAA transfer rules.

  18. Cindy Luis April 22, 2015 8:26 am

    15. it is not a lame excuse nor am I out of touch. you can only play 6 at a time. someone has to sit. Not implying anything. merely stating a fact.

And I never said she was redshirting. I wrote “she may redshirt, she may not. They needed another middle.’ My guess is she won’t but a lot depends on what they do with Mitchem. either MB or OH. And some of it depends on Maglio. She’s greatly improved in part to being with the sand team.

don’t understand your negativity. While you did say ‘good’ you started your post with:
Seems like another in a growing list of recent middles – tall but can’t hit out of a paper bag.

    17. thanks for all the info. I understand the selection of one campus. Back in the day you just checked a box when selecting your preferred UC campus.

the original question was about the difference in terms of NLI, Statement of Intent, scholarship offer.
again, just pointing out what Cal had on its gobears website when announcing the signing of the athletes.

  19. tongo April 22, 2015 8:53 am

#15 Are you serious? Top programs do bring in players to be red-shirted and the practice is common among top programs! Last year, PSU Russ Rose red-shirted 2 freshmen – Bryanna Weiskircher, an Under Armour High School First Team All-American, and Nia Reed, a Mizuno High School First Team All-American. Coach Rose said “Quite simply, there just aren’t enough spots in the rotation for them to contribute significant time … and You want to save people for the future”. (Source: The Daily Collegian, Sept. 19, 2014)

  20. A View From Afar April 22, 2015 9:08 am

#15 Cindy, yes back in the day it was much easier (and cheaper) to apply to multiple UC campuses. IMHO Cal’s mention of their 2015 class signing their SIRs was a friendly dig at the other UC campuses since (athletic letters of intent aside) it prevents these recruits from registering at the competing UC campuses. The UC admissions people I’d talked to years ago encouraged perspective students to sign their SIRs as early as possible in part to free up spots at the various campuses you were accepted to but weren’t going to attend. Those freed up spots could then be offered to students who are on the wait lists.

Oops, sorry. My last post (#20) should have been in response to #18.

UH Announces Addition of Natasha Burns

    http://hawaiiathletics.com/news/2015/4/21/WVB_0421151954.aspx?path=wvball

  23. oldtimer808 April 22, 2015 10:37 am

Say this bouncingball fella sure sounds like the old Steve…changed your name again huh. Always with the negativity, forever opinionated with no solutions except to expult his own ego.

  24. tongo April 22, 2015 10:40 am

Wishing you all the very best to you Keani! Life is about constantly making adjustments. Change what doesn’t work for you for something that will work for you. The challenge is on-going in life. It looks like you made the decision to move forward and complete your already stellar volleyball career on the high note. Congrats and best wishes.

  25. turfwar April 22, 2015 10:47 am

Bouncingball you still haven’t named players you think are top level players. If you can’t even name them how can you compare them? I think you’re Steve, Laura, whoever still trying to get people’s attention. But is being a jerk the only way you can get people to respond to your rants? But if you’re going to compare players then at least tell us who you are referring to. Who is your idea of players we should be signing. Anything else is just taking cheap shots of which you seem to take pride in. At least make an effort at a realistic argument. But then that’s never been a point in any of your posts.

  26. Cubicle1126 April 22, 2015 10:47 am

did someone just say that hartong and kaufman weren’t consistent power hitters? that tells you all you need to know about that poster’s observation of the game. lol

hartong was an AA as a middle, and kaufman probably should have been during her senior year. i would even include sanders as a middle who hit with power (it was sanders’ blocking that was a weak spot in her game, altho she made significant strides by her senior year).

  27. Cubicle1126 April 22, 2015 10:48 am

    good luck to Passi!

  28. Cubicle1126 April 22, 2015 10:48 am

and welcome to Natasha Burns … to the hawaii ohana!

  29. hollycow April 22, 2015 10:51 am

I guess Shoji can make comments on the new recruits without them enrolling in school. Maybe another write up in the SA on the other 3 recruits will shake up UH into making another official announcement on their site with comments from Shoji. Subject case closed……….

  30. Warriorfan April 22, 2015 11:08 am

I am happy with the addition of Burns. I notice she has a lot of haters on volleytalk.
It will be nice if she proves them all wrong.

  31. Warriorfan April 22, 2015 11:10 am

Some poster said, she is more a west virginia level player, that’s funny since WV just had two players transfer to Arizona and UCLA …. So maybe they do recruit talent that could play in higher levels.

  32. 808 April 22, 2015 11:16 am

re: #22. Wait, why is UH/Shoji announcing the addition of Burns? Does that mean she signed and NLI (but according to the discussion, she couldn’t have since she already had signed one with WVU)? Is it different because she got a release? I thought the word was that he wouldn’t be able to comment on her until she is actually enrolled in school at UH.

  33. Warriorfan April 22, 2015 11:29 am

Natasha has definitely seen the negative posts about her online, and I am loving her attitude about it.

  34. Cubicle1126 April 22, 2015 2:01 pm

have there been others posting negative things? i’ve only seen bouncingball on here do that.

most other regular fans have been welcoming…

  35. turfwar April 22, 2015 3:21 pm

Cube the other negative stuff has been on volleytalk. But one of the posters could be the same guy too. Steve, Laura, bouncingball…

  36. Warriorfan April 22, 2015 3:45 pm

One of the negative posters is a Nebraska homer ( who sometimes has inside info)
Why he feels the need to talk down on UH recruit, who knows. I just hope we Face Nebraska in the future and Natasha blocks them off the court and makes him look foolish.

  37. AdmrVT April 22, 2015 4:21 pm

#31. And WV described Natasha as being their top recruit.

  38. Cubicle1126 April 22, 2015 4:34 pm

thanks for the heads up, turf and wf …

  39. Cindy Luis April 22, 2015 6:00 pm

    22. the deal on Shoji, he had been told he couldn’t say anything. But was told yesterday that he could comment now that she signed the scholarship agreement.
Reminded them that they hadn’t done a release on the early signees.
Again, she did not sign an NLI. It was a scholarship agreement. but that is basically a technicallity.

From my experience, their compliance department is very good but sometimes too cautious.

    35. don’t think it’s that person.
