The volleyball Warriors have loyal fans. The most dedicated appear to be the players’ parents.
Carole McKellar, mother of opposite Iain McKellar, follows every match on the Internet. Well, actually most matches. She often travels from England to attend UH matches.
Middle blocker Davis Holt’s parents donated volleyball equipment.
The parents of California-raised players host barbecues when the Warriors are on the mainland.
Middle blocker Taylor Averill’s father sang the national anthem and Hawai‘i Pono‘i on senior night.
Outside hitter Scott Hartley’s parents moved to Hawaii. (OK, that might be a coincidence, but that’s still kind of cool.)
Mike Ramos attends every home match, screaming away — even though his son Joby completed his UH eligibility a year ago.
Then there is Donna Kanetake, mother of libero Kolby Kanetake. Those fat-head pictures that fans wave at matches? Donna had those made. Then yesterday, she bought an entire section — 84 tickets priced at $16 apiece — for the April 25 MPSF quarterfinal match.
That’s terrific that there are such fan.
It’s great to see the fan support for Men’s Volleyball. Now the football team needs to start winning to bring back the fans to Aloha Stadium.

Fans will support when team wins. But a team that’s struggling probably needs support more.
At the volleyball banquet, one of the players noted that the team received the same level of enthusiasm and support from core fans when they were losing as they do now.
But, hey, it’s a capitalistic system. If you pay for a ticket, you’re entitled to an opinion. I do think that boycotts are stupid. I mean, if you don’t like the food at Fred’s Diner, you stop eating there. You don’t go on Web sites and tell others to boycott Fred’s.
…and 3-Prong and Family will be in the lower bowl on 4/25 too.

CBS Sports should move up kickoff an hour or so. A 1 a.m. kickoff on a Friday for East Coast viewers is stupid.
So UH will lose attendance and pay-per-view bonus. And that’s the still-not-yet-former AD’s going-away present.

Why does Bobby Curran keep insisting Hawaii is going to get banged up playing Ohio St. and Wisconsin??? If anything, these games might go by quicker.
1. Playing a better team does not mean your injury of risk goes up. All D1 football games are physical and and freak play can lead to injury.
2. Ohio St. and Wisconsin are run 1st teams that are going to work the clock in the 2nd half and possibly play 2nd and 3rd string guys. Clock is going to run and these games are going to move quicker. Time outs probably won’t be used to stop clock and not much passing on 3rd downs.
3. Hawaii doesn’t have to play starters 4 quarters. Back ups can also get game reps when game is out of reach.
I agree with your point about boycott’s ST. I respect those who have made the decision to stop going to the games. It has indeed been frustrating and usually far from entertaining these last years. So not showing up anymore is quite understandable. But many have chosen to keep showing up and have kept supporting anyway. I find the posters who like to trumpet their “boycotts” tiresome. I respect that they have made a decision and decided to move on. I am not very interested at all in their ongoing whining. If you don’t like the product on the field then don’t go to the games, it is your right. But stop the constant whining already. Or at least if you are going to whine do it somewhere else. Everyone knows we have had a bad football team these last years and that coach Chow has not been able to succeed so far. But there are more interesting things to discuss than the grandeur of some individual’s boycott. Anyone who can do simple math in the athletic dept can see that attendance is down and this is a problem.
Who is planning to see the bows at the horse-shoe aka..Ohio State this fall??

MWC may like the Thursday nite games for $$$, but UH, IIRC, gets NONE – no $$$ whatsoever because of PPV in Hawaii
don’t know about you, but we will NOT be in attendance – this will be only the 2nd time since 1969 that we will miss the first game – I say less than 10,000 fans will be in attendance – say 7 pm HST will be 10 pm PDST – tv rating will be POOR!!!

Bobby Curran is right. Guys will get Hurt! Let the 1 st string play for a half like a scrimmage. Then let the rest of team play. Remember, they gotta play Wisconsin.
Instead of boycotting, we decided to buy cheap seats season tickets, drop away-game PPV, and park for $5 a game instead of paying for premium parking. UH football lost out, but we put some of that back into other UH sports that have provided much more entertainment per dollar. You just can’t escape that this is year 4 under Coach Chow, and we just now appear to be fully staffed with coaches. For the first time since the middle of the first season, I feel that UH Athletics has provided the minimum level of support needed to hope to have a successful program. It is too bad that the Colorado game is on a Thursday night, but this should be a winnable game and (in my mind anyway) probably a bellwether for the season.

ST, I guess I am entitled to an opinion since I do attend football games at Aloha Stadium. I started going to Hawaii Rainbow games starting in 1967 and have continued to attend every year since. But I don’t believe that gives me the right to dog the team or coaching staff. I believe you misunderstood my comment. My comment only noted that winning will bring more fans to the game, just as in any sport at any school across the nation. Reality is that winning brings in the fans. I attend most of the home games. Last season I attended all the home games. And I miss the excitement when Aloha Stadium was rocking and there never was a team that we, the fans, though Hawaii could not beat. This football season brings much hope. And as I had written on this blog recently that I always remain optimistic during spring and fall practices as I predicted a 7-win season last year and predicted the same for this season. And I don’t see where you accuse me of boycotting the games. Huh? Where did that come from.

I don’t believe ST was accusing you of boycotting the football games. There have been several on the blog who have essentially said they were not going to renew their tickets or buy tickets for this football season because the games weren’t fun, don’t like losing, won’t go until Chow is gone.
I’m with ST I think boycotting is STUPID! This is a time when the football team and UH sports in general need all the support that we can muster. Neither I or my husband attended UH (nor did my children) but since we became a part of the Tsai-Kos 6 years ago we’ve attended just about all home football games and many of the other sports games as well. We have no vested interest other than supporting the student athletes (both men and women) and the University in general. I’ve gone through worse coaches and seasons where we both attended college but finally things did turn around. We’ve just got to believe and support and keep on supporting the teams not matter what their record. Yes, winning is more fun and much more cause to celebrate. I used to work in an college athletic department and I sat through some really bad seasons in various sports but I was still there to support the student athletes no matter what the won/loss record.
I’m just asking that we all support UH Athletics with our time, energy and money at whatever level we can.

Oh, by the way, I’m taking September 3rd off (and maybe the 4th as well) so I can Tailgate with the Tsai-kos (same location as last year) and then go across to Aloha Stadium to watch the University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors play football. Hope to see you all at the T-gate and game.
I had to resort to the installment plan, but I renewed my season tickets for the 38th time…My only hesitation is the poor judgement by the UH Administration in calling a “spade a spade” and literally killing the FB program by not demanding results. Well, I think it’s time to “fish” or “cut bait”, as I would like to see substantial improvement this football season…I don’t expect to win alot of games, but I do think 6 or 7 wins are achievable. I do expect a more exciting brand of football and better “on-field” performance due to improved coaching.
IF the FB program fails miserably this season, then I think it’s definitely time for change in many areas including the head coach. I hope Matlin can make the tough decisions that Jay could not…
Besides that, bring back the “WARRIORS” and retire the Rainbows to lesser sports. JJ started a winning tradition and we need to revive it…

Are you aware that 3 members of the BOR, in particular Jeff Portnoy, have apparently been meeting the student government regarding the future of athletics at UH to get a feel for how the students feel about UH Athletics as a whole, including the proposals to drop football down to a lower division and eliminating athletics all together?

A Board of Regents (BOR) member reached out to the Associated Students of the University of Hawai‘i (ASUH) at a meeting yesterday to gain student perspective on the athletics department and its budget.
Chairperson of the BOR Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics Jeffrey Portnoy and ASUH discussed the athletic budget for the 2016 school year, whether Division I athletics were important to students at UH and what students believe should be done with the athletics budget.
“Every year the athletics department was in a deficit situation, and it kind of was like ‘let’s not deal with it’,” Portnoy said. “But this board has decided, it’s got to be dealt with and it’s got to be recognized.”
ARE ATHLETICS IMPORTANT TO UH STUDENTS?
When Portnoy asked if ASUH members felt athletics were important to UH students, the majority of members said yes, while a few members said no.
Portnoy considered dropping the football program; however, most ASUH members did not think that UH students or UH community members would support it.
“We know that all of the Big West schools have dropped Division I football,” Portnoy said.
Portnoy said that he thinks the current UH football program differs from the past in that most of its fans seem to be older folk from the community, rather than UH students. He said, however, cutting the football program is at the bottom of the list of options for the athletics program.
RECONFIGURING THE BUDGET
One senate member said most UH students would oppose an additional fee attached to student tuition fees, that would be added to the athletics budget. Instead, he said he thinks students would rather see unnecessary factors in the athletics budget, like overpaid coaches, cut back or eliminated.
“The administration is committed to figuring out how to make this work,” Portnoy said.

I was under the impression that most of our coaches were “under paid” as compared to other institutions and that’s why we keep losing the good ones.

Alumni alone represent decades of graduating classes. Based on grade school math, it seems absurd to expect that a current year’s student body would represent the majority of fans.

Football games are good for the economy. Period.
One thing is eminently clear from what Portnoy has opined, and that he is not going to find a way to save UH athletics. Far from it. “The blind leading the blind.”
Drop UH football down a level — probably because of a misconception that it will reduce expenses. But, it will also likely reduce revenues. So, how does that address the deficit resulting from uncovered expenses from the non-revenue generating and Title IX sports?
Eliminate football, which is the only UH sport generating “positive” net revenue and follow the model of the Big West schools — who are subsidized by the State of California, means the non-revenue generating and Title IX UH sports will suddenly generate more revenue by ???? Oh, the Hawaii Leg. will take that as a sign that the BOR has come to their senses, and will now appropriate more money?
There is a screw loose somewhere. Ask a stupid question, expect a stupid answer.

Hmmn, on the surface this is a tad disheartening. I am hoping that he was either misquoted or the statements were taken out of context.
As to the BOR, I would have hoped in this advanced stage of the university, that would have tapped a former UH athlete or two with credentials in the community. A Shawn Ching or a Sam Moku, would provide a real world glimpse of not just sports, buts its juxtaposition within the university, but moreover the state. That said, I really can’t conceive from a basic nominal level of getting rid or going down a level, as it does not make any financial sense, other than than the very immediate future.
