Staff transactions

Whoops. We forgot to mention these offseason transactions:

> Spencer Hagan, a grad assistant the past year after graduating from California, is an assistant coach at UC Davis.

> Donovan Raiola, who was helpful as an intern working with UH’s offensive line last season, accepted a GA’s position at Notre Dame.

> Brad Vonnahme, a GA who assisted the defense last season, followed Kevin Clune to Utah State. His new title is special teams/defensive administrative assistant.

> Justin Clapp, a former UH slotback, has been hired as a full-time academic adviser for the football team. Clapp earned a master’s degree a year ago before going on an extensive European trip.

    First

  2. Trunks420 April 7, 2015 7:08 am

    For first time ever

  3. H-man April 7, 2015 7:38 am

Congrats to Trunk420 for being first.

  4. H-man April 7, 2015 7:45 am

Okay, staying with today’s subject, I was unaware that Donovan Raiola was an intern on the team. I would classify losing someone with his background as a big loss. But Notre Dame, great opportunity. And welcome back to Justin Clapp as academic adviser.

  5. jeezy33 April 7, 2015 7:54 am

With big needs on the D line, doesn’t make a lot of sense that Hawaii signed a JC offensive guard.

  6. tom April 7, 2015 8:07 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!
You can only date the girl that accepts.

  7. Rodney April 7, 2015 8:42 am

Good comment Jezzy But Wow!! Love the new recruit!
Looks like his got some nasty.

  8. Lowtone123 April 7, 2015 8:49 am

    What happened to Jordan Wynn?

  9. 808warriorfan April 7, 2015 9:00 am

#8 “Lowtone123” … While it’s obvious Jordan Wynn is no longer on the Coaching staff I too would like to know what happened ??? This question has been asked quite a few times on this blog but it seems a certain Head Coach believes in censorship. The sad thing is that Wynn was very loyal to Norm Chow and was placed in a postion he was not yet ready for. Luke Matthews who came in w/ Jordan Wynn is still on staff and from what I saw on the first day of spring ball, my thought is we either need new WRs or a new WR coach. Like the past few seasons a lot of dropped balls.

  10. jeezy33 April 7, 2015 9:08 am

    7. I don’t see it….

  11. boolakanaka April 7, 2015 9:08 am

Tom–that is all so true. I was just telling my niece that same thing, as she was receiving her letters for college admission–mostly yes, but a couple of no’s.

Dance with the one that wants you…..

  12. Inyoface April 7, 2015 9:16 am

Dejon should move back to the D-Line.

  13. Ipu Man April 7, 2015 9:18 am

U.C. Davis has a football team?
    Maybe we should schedule them.

  14. H-man April 7, 2015 9:19 am

Just guessing. All assistant coaches are on 1-year contracts, so it is easy to enact a coaching change simply by not renewing the respective contract. In Jordan Wynn’s case, he became expendable when Norm Chow (finally) hired an offensive coordinator (OC). I suppose the new OC could have retained Jordan as quarterbacks coach, but it is clear that the OC intents to keep that function as well. I think that is a smart move. Luke Matthews was retained simply because he is the receivers coach, and my guess is he received a vote of confidence from Chow.

  15. H-man April 7, 2015 9:27 am

For all the talk about the need for a Juco NT/DT, and I am one of them, the greater need was to build depth at offensive guard with the medical retirement of Kiha Sai.

  16. tommui April 7, 2015 9:29 am

    BOOLAKANAKA Re: 11

I realize that we could use a bunch of D-Liners but …

College acceptance – true story. My kids are all pau college-wise but they had a friend that applied to Yale, Harvard, Wellesley and Stanford (and UH as a fall-back!)

Weight-listed at Wellesley and Harvard – accepted at Yale and Stanford. How you figgah?

  17. jeezy33 April 7, 2015 9:32 am

    15. No.. That’s false. Guard is NOT a need.

  18. boolakanaka April 7, 2015 9:33 am

Tommui—these schools are incredibly finicky. But, as they always say, they are trying to shape a class, and not just have 2400 SATs and 4.0s. So, there will always be losers and some surprise winners….

But, no sense feeling rejected, move-on and enjoy the institution that wants you—valuable lesson for life.

  19. What??? April 7, 2015 9:34 am

IMHO you can never have enough linemen on either side

  20. jeezy33 April 7, 2015 9:35 am

Jordan Agasiva can come in and start at Guard from day 1 and move over to Tackle eventually.

  21. Tiki808 April 7, 2015 9:37 am

Jacob Patek? What about him? #31 former player

  22. jeezy33 April 7, 2015 9:40 am

    19. linemen vs quality linemen…. Recruiting numbers doesn’t translate to much. Not when you have bigger needs in other areas.

Best case scenario as of now, we’re going into the season with Tulimasealii, Rasmussen, Lavaka, Faalologo, and Gifford at DT. IF Mason decides to use a lot of 3-4 sets, we are going to need more bodies. Shawley should be used off the edge as a pass rusher. If Tui Unga moves back over, then that works. But we are lacking quality depth on the D line.

  23. st. anthony trojan April 7, 2015 9:42 am

Is Luke Matthew the only one left from his original staff ?

  24. amela April 7, 2015 9:48 am

Use the new JC as a defensive tackle at 320#. Doesn’t look like he has a lot of speed but could plug up the center.

  25. NorthShoreFan April 7, 2015 10:05 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

    Great ball game yesterday.

    IMUA WARRIORS!

  26. NorthShoreFan April 7, 2015 10:17 am

Yikes! I understand wanting Marcus…but having to take Manziel too!?!? Maybe they can trade him away. not a fan of that kid..and he is a kid not an adult.

    IMUA MARCUS!

  27. Warrior Dave April 7, 2015 10:19 am

Sometimes opportunity knocks even when you are not ready. Jordan may have been a good guy and Showed potential, Chow needed more now. Jordan was offered a GA position but decided to move on. Time to move on already.

  28. NorthShoreFan April 7, 2015 10:23 am

Time il tellif Jordn would have been a keper”
not surehat is hpeningto y postin bt seem o be screwdup.

  29. H-man April 7, 2015 10:42 am

There’s also No. 67, Haani Tuimaiau, to add to the DT list. But I did find it distressing when Kennedy said he is now at 265 lbs and rather play in space. So he’s saying he’s a DE?

  30. SteveM April 7, 2015 10:45 am

    Good morning everyone!

While it appears the D-line is not deep at this time, why can’t a large body offensive lineman switch over to defense if needed? A lot of prospects are picked for their position but projected by the coaching staff to play another. What is the projection on Antonio Flowers?

  31. H-man April 7, 2015 10:45 am

Jezzy,, I think you’re wrong about the OG situation. There’s only two OGs with experience who currently can play the position, Elijah Tupai and Dejon Allen.

  32. jeezy33 April 7, 2015 11:04 am

What does experience prove? Only 2 guards start. So I wouldn’t want 4 guys rotating just to have “experience”. Tui Eli redshirted and supposedly was high on Naeole recruiting list last year. Koloamatangi, Hollis, Agasiva, and Waa are all capable even though waa looking like oyr next C. All of our OL minus Matt Norman are guards on most teams..

Jc kids are recruited to play immediately as Chow has been quoted.. not there to add depth. And this kid has 1 year experience total on the OL so the freshman class we have coming in probably have better technique and knowledge over a 3 for 3 kid.

  33. Maddog50 April 7, 2015 11:42 am

Stated here previously besides Lavaka I believe there are 1 or 2 more big bodies to Arrive JC guys I think. I do think this latest addition is OT to begin with and JordAn will step in and play.

  34. Boolakanaka April 7, 2015 11:46 am

For those Tsaikos that favor games of chance and are fans of golf–what’s the under/over of Tiger playing on Saturday?

  35. Rodney April 7, 2015 12:23 pm

Im sure we have a big DT comming
Spring is audition time for positions
and Dejon could possiable move to
other side. Gotta wait till hitting starts.

  36. Tiki808 April 7, 2015 1:40 pm

They need friends. Maybe they can learn more pc. I’ll be here cheering them on. Football is a rough sport. Many players in the past don’t have friends. I see their life. They were smart, now they’re abandoned by other players and friends. We’re here too.

  37. 3-Prong April 7, 2015 1:56 pm

boo: I think it will be Over for Tiger after 2 days….

  38. Boolakanaka April 7, 2015 2:06 pm

3-prong that’s it, no mo nice commentaries for da cats. Tiger plays on Sunday!! Just joking…

Tiki808, I know what you mean…recently found out one of my best boys from a UH and a helluva of a linebacker, just went back to prison. A life lost, so much potential, on and off the field, homie, you are not forgotten.

  39. H-man April 7, 2015 2:12 pm

I agree getting another NT/DT at this late date would be great. I always felt this was a top priority going into this season. Yet, it appears the coaching staff must have thought otherwise, as demonstrated by no DT recruit since Alo-Wily, even after he elected to sign with UNLV.

  40. What??? April 7, 2015 2:28 pm

#22 duh of course you want quality that goes without saying

  41. 3-Prong April 7, 2015 2:45 pm

boo, I am a Tiger fan myself, but Augusta is unforgiving if your short game is not on point. Remember his chipping on his last few outings…yikes.

  42. Boolakanaka April 7, 2015 3:46 pm

No worries 3 prong, I spoke to his GF, Lindsey Vonn, she said she get some special “relaxation exercises” for him calm down his chipping yips.

  43. oldtimer808 April 7, 2015 4:25 pm

Man Jeezy you should apply for a coaching position since you seem to have soo much insight as to our needs on the football team. Maybe you can recommend other players and how to best use the players that are currently on the team. I’m sure you can also recommend the best offense and defense for our home team.

  44. oldtimer808 April 7, 2015 4:27 pm

I wouldn’t worry about Tiger Wood. He looked like he solved his chipping and pitching problems.

  45. oldtimer808 April 7, 2015 4:29 pm

    Bo…Tiger is playing the weekend.

  46. Rodney April 7, 2015 5:10 pm

Well looks like basketball got a decommit

  47. kapakahi April 7, 2015 5:31 pm

    #12,

Dejon definitely better suited for OL.

  48. kapakahi April 7, 2015 5:34 pm

    #30,

Not listed on the Spring roster.

  49. Akamai Okole April 7, 2015 5:36 pm

    Great Afternoon All!

Best wishes to the Former Staff.

    GO WARRIORS!

  50. one fan April 7, 2015 5:43 pm

I like Jeezy comments. Although completely wrong, at least he has the balls to say why.

  51. st. anthony trojan April 7, 2015 5:50 pm

    Did… Chow…. decommit yet….he he he

  52. Trunks420 April 7, 2015 6:02 pm

Me want Jeezy for HC he is a way better Head Coach than Chow and a Proven Winner.

  53. Akamai Okole April 7, 2015 6:13 pm

    Heisman comes Home.

Marcus Mariota and his Ohana have brought the Heisman trophy back to Kalaepohaku for a brief visit. Very cool.

  54. Tanman April 7, 2015 6:37 pm

So sad, we may lose Beeman… She is a finalist for Utah’s job… But good for her!

  55. hitman April 7, 2015 6:49 pm

aloha everyone!! looks like we going end up with 2 new basketball coaches!! for the man and ladys team!!

  56. z April 7, 2015 6:51 pm

Utah is spending money to build up their athletic program. If Beeman goes she will get to work in Utah’s new 36 million dollar basketball facility. The AD there said that the new facility will set the bar for the PAC12.

  57. Winning April 7, 2015 7:23 pm

There should be a requirement for all Board of Regents that they put up 6 figure donations before being installed as a Regent. He He He! Then well see how many want to be regents to protect those donations. He He!

  58. Tiki808 April 7, 2015 7:26 pm

Here is what you can do. If you’re into computers and know people who have pictures of the players, as Tupu Aluuluu #5 UH football once, you can make an account for them and place it on Fanbase.com. It is a website built only for them, UH athletics and past superstars of the times. If this is you. Or just tell them put it on themselves. Really. It is for the kids and the show. Why not?

  59. pollypicador April 7, 2015 8:04 pm

    http://www.und.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/030215aag.html

Donovan Raiola going to Notre Dame is a huge feather in his cap.

Best of both worlds-football and schooling.

It doesn’t get any better than this…big city, big stage, big time…and working along side with a good seasoned OL coach ( Harry Hiestand-31 yrs. experience).

It also looks like he was hired prior to Notre Dame’s spring practices (smart).

I also realized my confusion of getting Donovan mixed up with his brother Dominic.

Good trajectory for DR. Too bad Chow didn’t grab DR before ND did.

  60. boolakanaka April 8, 2015 2:57 am

Polly, I agree with everything you said except big city. South Bend is just about 100,000, although it about 2 hours to Chicago.

  61. ALLAN April 8, 2015 4:04 am

I ALREADY DE-COMMITTED MY FB TKT RENEWALS. NOW, I WILL START THINKING ABT DE-COMMITTING MY BB ONES. NOT TO WORRY, THO…THEY ARE IN SUPER PRIME LOCATIONS; PROBABLY WILL BE SNAPPED UP 30 SECONDS AFTER THEY GO ON LINE.

  62. H-man April 8, 2015 4:21 am

I predict Jamie White, Fresno St.’s women’s basketball head coach, will get the Utah head coaching job.

  63. cappie the dog April 8, 2015 5:03 am

Arguably, Coach Beeman has of yet not recruited a player that is better than the players she inherited.

    Kamilla Jackson
    Shawna Lei Kuehu
Ashley Karaitiana(and her .339 FG%, albeit offset by good defense)

I hope this gives Jaimie White the advantage over Beeman. Fresno State’s roster is White’s alone.

Beeman’s best recruit, I guess, is Destiny King, a point guard who should have been a power forward.

The best thing to happen to this past year’s team was the addition of Ashley Huff. I think she elevated Connie Morris’ game.

Can’t get schooled by a volleyball player. Morris played significantly better after Huff’s arrival.

  64. boolakanaka April 8, 2015 5:58 am

That video of Michael Eletise on the SB this morning reminds me of a young Kifi!!!!

  65. NorthShoreFan April 8, 2015 8:15 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

I wonder if other programs are going through as much coaching turmoil as we are. Seems every year we got drama. Maybe the whole department and board needs to be replaced, not just people on the front lines.

    IMUA WARRIORS!

    Time to hula!

  66. Ipu Man April 8, 2015 8:32 am

Tiger should create some interesting tournaments of his own.
Play against famous people, maybe left handed…
    Maybe against Wie.

  67. jimmy the lock April 8, 2015 8:45 am

    Ashley Huff?

ALLAN, caps lock, + ‘mo bettah.

    GO STAFF! 😆

  68. Stephen Tsai April 8, 2015 8:45 am

    Allan:
Well, now you can use your disposable money to buy a newspaper subscription.
