Iosefa: “Keep working”

Joey Iosefa returned to Honolulu this morning with one thing on his mind:

“It’s time to go back to work,” Iosefa said.

Iosefa left nearly three weeks ago to participate in UH’s pro day in San Diego. The Cincinnati Bengals sent three representatives, including running back coach Kyle Caskey, to personally work out Iosefa. The Green Bay Packers also praised Iosefa’s pro-day workout.

That evening, Iosefa and agent Aaron Gordon had dinner with an official from the Kansas City Chiefs. Gordon has three friends in the organization.

Iosefa remained in Los Angeles to be with his sister, who recently gave birth to a girl.

Yesterday, Iosefa was invited to what essentially was a day-long interview with the Oakland Raiders. Iosefa reviewed videos and football strategies with running backs coach Bernie Parmalee. He also met with general manager Reggie McKenzie.

The Raiders, Bengals, Chiefs, Packers and Seattle Seahawks have shown the most interest in Iosefa.

For now, Iosefa said, “I’m going to keep working.”

Did you know my late cousins, Rodney Kubo and Todd Kubo?

On a side note, I wonder why Hawaii and Wisconsin changed the date of their Aloha Stadium meeting?

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!!

Hope everyone has a great day and a Happy Easter!!!

Commented on the last post but comments closed.

Aloha Stadium has its charm. We can built another, more modern facility and keep that charm if it’s done right. However, I have my doubts as to whether it can be “done right”….LOL 🙂

    Best of luck to Joey!!!

  6. Naks8 April 2, 2015 9:43 am

Good luck Joey. We would love to see him rumble in seattle

  7. boolakanaka April 2, 2015 9:57 am

ST..there was also a scouting report this week, that the Lions were also seriously interested in using a late round to pick him up. It further stated, that thought from both film and recent workouts that he was much quicker thane expected

    Good morning everyone!

    Good luck to Joey Iosefa!

In this day and age of “the salary cap”, a guy like Joey who will either be a late round pick or free agent will be a huge asset to a team w/ his talent and low salary by NFL standards … GOOD LUCK JOEY !!!!!

I believe Marketing has to start with UH Athletics. Matlin, with a strong marketing background, may get more oomph into promoting, not just football, but all of the programs. Now is the time to strike on the heels of successful basketball campaigns, and the men’s volleyball run at a national championship.

  13. seewhy April 2, 2015 11:54 am

Just a thought. Has UH ever tried marketing their products and apparel on the mainland? Particularly in Hawaii hot spots?

  14. oneseason April 2, 2015 12:40 pm

UH Athletics is accepting Rainbow Wahine volleyball season ticket renewals through April 27. Same 4 payment option as with Football. Online renewal is quick and easy.

NEVER SAW THE PEANUT GUY SELLING PEANUTS AT ALOHA STADIUM, NOR KNEW HIS NAME, BUT I USED TO SEE HIM IN THE EARLY 50’S SELLING NEWSPAPERS AS I RODE THE TROLLEY ON KING ST., GOING HOME FROM SCHOOL, THRU CHINATOWN VIA HOTEL ST. TO KALIHI IN THE WKDAY AFTERNOONS. THE BUS USED TO PASS BY AALA PARK, WHERE KING & HOTEL MERGED, AND HE WOULD BE SELLING PAPER NEXT TO THE STORE THAT OPENED TO THE KING ST. FROM AALA PARK.

Looks like the Leahey and Leahey Show on PBS has ended its run according to Rob DeMello and Kanoa Leahey.
Too bad, I really enjoyed that show.
Hopefully, they can hook up with someone else!

#15. Howard Egami was the gentlest soul I ever met. His day job was at Aloha Motors. Vending at the stadium was his part time job. I met him at a tail gate in the late 80’s and took him home from football games there after.

As a teenager I used to make fun of him. He had a severe speech impediment where he could only utter sounds but not speak. I’d try to imitate the way he sounded and have a good laugh with my friends. That made him angry and he’d yell things we couldn’t understand and laugh harder. One night driving him home I told him I was one of the young punks who use to tease him at the old stadium and I was sorry I did so. Tears welled in his eyes and said what sounded like “thats okay, that’s okay.” I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for him.

  18. townieboy April 2, 2015 2:06 pm

    Go Joey GO!

  19. Derek April 2, 2015 2:12 pm

Maybe Leahey X2 will reappear on K-Five.

  20. seewhy April 2, 2015 2:13 pm

    RE: cocobean #17

Very touching story. I’m glad you made peace with him. I remember reading an article by Ferd about Mr. Egami a couple years back.

  21. 3-Prong April 2, 2015 2:22 pm

“Hotdogs, Peanuts, Chips, Cote!” Rest in Peace Mr. Egami…

  23. Warbow April 2, 2015 2:38 pm

ST……The Name Todd Kubo rings a bell. Almost sure I knew him in HS. Didn’t know he’s no longer with us. Sorry for you lost. And no, I’m not Homey. Another Waipahu old timer running around here?

    SPRING 2015 ROSTER IS UP
    http://hawaiiathletics.com/roster.aspx?path=football

    Some quick notes
Max Wittek is now #13 (his number he wore at Mater Dei & USC)
Keelan Ewaliko #12 (his number he wore at Baldwin HS)
Samson Anguay will wear #27, allowing Damien Packer to wear #21 in memory of a childhood friend who passed away.

  25. Warbow April 2, 2015 2:49 pm

    boolakanaka
Yep I’m a Waipahu guy. I think the really mean sole OT you are talking about was Manu Petaia. He was one mean sole from Samoa. We were stacked back then as 4 of that team went on to play D-1 football. Manu could have been a great one but had to learn the game first. I think he is no longer with us.

  26. Inyoface April 2, 2015 3:22 pm

    Dang, no L&L show anymore?

  27. Tiki808 April 2, 2015 3:27 pm

better than KIF. How much your pay? Really.

  28. Buffoman April 2, 2015 4:31 pm

Mr. Egami. Never knew his name as a kid. He was so much a part of Honolulu Stadium. An icon much like the Melim clock, Chuck Leahy and hot sweet bread from Bucks Bakery. He was a hard worker and endured a lot. I was one of those stupid young ones who made fun of him. As I got older and maybe smarter I too regretted being that jerk.

  29. cappie the dog April 2, 2015 4:51 pm

Jim Leahey and Rick Blangiardi doing UH football: that was a high quality telecast.

Even though he had a hard time seeing the shooter behind or over the three-point line, I miss the minimalism of Leahey/Wilson during UH basketball games.

Lori Santi is smarter than any of those women who cover softball on ESPN.

When I listen to Leahey on the KHET show, I realize that it’s his eyesight that has gone, not his mind.

  30. Akamai Okole April 2, 2015 4:54 pm

    Memories…funny things.

While I certainly remember “Howard” and his unique pronouncements. The memory of his face makes me remember lessons from my Faddah about not teasing and learning the meaning of “dorobo” will forever be associated in my mind with the face of one of his co-workers. 🙄

  31. Akamai Okole April 2, 2015 4:55 pm

…and of course, being “one manapua” short of the Goal Line!

  32. lawaia April 2, 2015 5:08 pm

I believe Howard Egami’s catch phrase was “Peanuts, Popcorn, Coke, Get Your Line-up”. He would be standing on the corner of South King Street and Isenberg Street prior to the game. He would give us 2 cents for every line-up we sold for him. When we tried to mimic his catch phrase, he would laugh at us and slap our head. Very fond memories.

  33. tom April 2, 2015 5:29 pm

    (Jessie)James:

Nice seeing your name on thwe blog again!

  34. Boolakanaka April 2, 2015 5:38 pm

Warbow–mahalo for that. It’s funny the things that stay with you, I just remember him just eating up one of my boys from Halawa. I was playing as a soph, and had plenty good looks from the sideline. Yeah, Waipahu was loaded in those days….Campbell too had plenty talent-Aylette Hauki, Johnny Dodge, Reggie Robinson (who letter played at UH)

  35. turfwar April 2, 2015 5:49 pm

Sheesh another search committee? This time for basketball coach. http://www.warriorinsider.com/2015/04/advisory-committee-announced-by-uh/

  36. BigFan April 2, 2015 5:54 pm

Johnny Dodge, ahh, great football name from the past.

Cocobean, Buffoman, you can understand how bullying gets started especially when you’re that age. We all get wiser, hopefully.

  37. SteveM April 2, 2015 5:56 pm

    Homey?
Was there a Homey sighting??? ?-)

  38. Boolakanaka April 2, 2015 6:01 pm

Bigfan-if I recall Johnny transfered from St. Louis to Campbell. He lived next to my boy John Piper two time state wrestling champ.

  39. Old School Dave April 2, 2015 6:48 pm

St. Louis had some talented players back in the early 70s who transferred to their respective public schools. James Holt (Waianae), Johnny Dodge (Campbell), Greg Saquilon (Waipahu) just to name a few.

  40. Trunks420 April 2, 2015 8:27 pm

I think if packers get him they may be a contender this season.

But also wouldn’t mind seeing him in go to Raiders think those two teams will be great fit for Joey.

  41. A-House April 2, 2015 8:33 pm

I do hope that Matlin will change the Colorado game back to Saturday – would be shame to open the 2015 season with a very small crowd – but, BJ won’t care as he will be long gone!!!!!!!!!

  42. beans April 2, 2015 8:35 pm

So am I sensing now that more of us are leaning toward fixing and keeping Aloha Stadium than build a new smaller one? I have heard a lot of positive opinions about the loveable rust bucket over the last couple of days. Well except for the vivid descriptions of the I.P.Freely fan(s).
Well if money wasn’t an object I would want a new stadium too. BUT money is an object. So let’s be real. Keep tweaking the rules to maximize the fan experience and let’s all have fun there. Deepen the troughs and shoot in some plumeria air scent and keep it going. After all, it has served us well for many years.

  43. 3-Prong April 2, 2015 9:06 pm

What’s really sad is the change orders alone up to this point in time, for the rail could have funded a brand new stadium. Anybody care to bet that this round of change orders is not the last. Wait until they have to deal with moving all the utility lines and telephone poles when they get into town.

  44. cappie the dog April 2, 2015 11:22 pm

On “The Herd” this morning, the host talked about how nobody in Southern California uses their billion dollar subway system.

  45. justsomeguy April 3, 2015 1:14 am

Joey’s a good guy, I hope he gets his chance. Toughness isn’t something you can measure on a stat sheet, but the kid’s got it in spades.

  46. Maddog50 April 3, 2015 3:15 am

Regarding the Spring roster……Kiha Sai? Also unless the weights are frozen in time merely numbers have been added, heights and weight have not been adjusted. This roster is a little light inOL and DL . Hope something is in the works or the incoming freshmen OL are going to see a lot of playing time. Was hoping a few ofthe JC guys would get here or at least a few more. Go Warriors and don’t forget to throw a bone at coaches choice or join NaKoa!!!!

  47. Glenn April 3, 2015 7:18 am

Imua Aloha Stadium . Thanks for backing up the stadium. What is needs is a winning Hawaii football team and it will be beautiful! Glenn Tango

  48. oneseason April 3, 2015 7:50 am

#43 … 3-Prong … that is great! And for a rail cost of $8B, UH could buy thirty-two $250M stadiums.
