Matlin to be named AD

Ferd Lewis, Dave Reardon and Brian McInnis are reporting Dave Matlin will be the new AD.

Thoughts?

The top-ranked volleyball Warriors got an early start on a four-matches-in-five-days road trip. They departed campus at 5:15 this morning. That meant calling five cabs, a considerable savings from renting a bus for the drive to the airport.

COMMENTS

  1. H-man March 25, 2015 6:15 am

Going back to yesterday’s blog, I want to thank Hawaiimongoose for providing his comments based on the report/study regarding stadium sizing. I will certainly read the report; thanks for link.

  2. H-man March 25, 2015 6:16 am

David Matlin as the new AD. I don’t know enough to like or dislike. Only time will measure his performance.

  3. 1 March 25, 2015 6:28 am

    1?

  4. Shoko March 25, 2015 6:30 am

I think its a good hire. Time will tell if he’s the answer to UHAD’s financial woes but even if Amemiya was chosen he, too, would be faced with the same dilemma. At least with Matlin, he seems to have more experience and familiarity with college athletics.

  5. Maddog50 March 25, 2015 6:31 am

Congrats to Mr Matlin. So let’s get about the business of proper funding and fund raising. Relaunch this craft and get it going!!!!

  6. 1 March 25, 2015 6:31 am

One should not get too excited until the new AD comes out with his/her strategic business plan. Having a vision is key to success. Trying to actualize that vision is where the grunt work comes in.

  7. 3-Prong March 25, 2015 6:58 am

I hope he will concentrate on the AD position and give up his positions on the bowl and Diamond Head Classic.

  8. Shoko March 25, 2015 7:07 am

Is Bley-Vroman still the interim chancellor?

  9. Stephen Tsai March 25, 2015 7:11 am

    Shoko:
He’s still interim although he isn’t addressed as “interim.”

  10. 3-Prong March 25, 2015 7:13 am

    Amemiya for Chancellor…hehe

  11. Shoko March 25, 2015 7:15 am

Ah, only reason I asked was sometimes having that “interim” attached to the position can sometimes affect decisions.

  12. tom March 25, 2015 7:15 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED … (Save APRIL 4)

The Warrior Blog had a comment from one blogger: “if you guys have a upcoming date for general clean up ie. weed whacking, power washing, painting or general destruction, etc. give a shout. We might be able to get some people out. If any upper or lower campus peeps show up maybe we can teach them how to use a mop, rake, paint scraper, paint brush, weed whacker, back pack sprayer etc…”

I got answer back from Coach Wade, who was using the clean-up date of April 4 as a sort of team bonding, he would welcome help!!!

He asked Kimo Kai to coordinate the effort as he is leaving today with the team for the Mainalnd.

Kimo wrote: Let your blog know about April 4th, 8am, come ready to work. And per complainance they’re not allowed to buy charlie’s kids any drinks, food, lunch, etc.,

    SO, TSAIKOS, GIVE A HAND!
Kimo may be contacted at kimo.kai(at) uhfoundation(dot)com.

  13. boolakanaka March 25, 2015 7:28 am

Tom, let me know, if you need a home depot donation for supplies or things of that nature.

  14. Kalani March 25, 2015 7:55 am

UH Manoa campus has a fleet of vans and trucks. Pretty sure it’s free, or if not it’s a reasonable rate billed to the department. Seems like the team could get a couple volunteers to pick up the vans and drop them off at the airport.

  15. rage777 March 25, 2015 7:59 am

Where is Stephen Tsai’s name on that list of the breaking news?? Were you stuck on the Pali? Just kidding.

  16. innocent observer March 25, 2015 7:59 am

did amemia turn the job down?

  17. oneseason March 25, 2015 8:06 am

It took about 3 and a half months to find the right AD. A good first test will be MBB coach hiring. He will have already had time to review the public data, so hopefully it will be quick and correct.

  18. Obake-san March 25, 2015 8:12 am

    #12…

Unfortunately, that could be a compliance issue that is “not available” to other UH students. So it would be safer to just call a cab or in this case, cabs.

Anyway, good luck to MVB. Like the AD pick. Hey, he’s local, have experience running a sport franchise and sporting events, but have to wait (again) for the BoR to “give their blessings”.

    Go Bows!!!!

  19. Ipu Man March 25, 2015 8:17 am

    Congrats to UH’s new AD.
Matlin is the man…the new sheriff in town.
Hope he succeeds with his dreams.

  20. jm2375 March 25, 2015 8:26 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

    Congratulations to Mr. Matlin.

Obake-san – I believe the vans, etc from the motor pool could be used. I think the problem with the early morning departures is 1) motor pool not open yet and 2) someone to drive them to the airport.

    GO WARRIORS!
    GO WAHINE!

  21. jm2375 March 25, 2015 8:28 am

tom – I emailed the MVB booster club president. We’ll spread the word among the booster club members.

    THANK YOU!

  25. Da Punchbowl Kid March 25, 2015 9:13 am

Good luck Mr. Maitlin. May you have many great years ahead!

Tom and JM – I would be there, but don’t know if and when surgery on my shoulder is coming. Thanks for your generous support, Boola!

  26. Tanman March 25, 2015 9:16 am

We still need to wait for the Board of Regents to meet… Hopefully, there’s no problems approving hiring of Matlin. If UH had came up with a decision may be 10 days earlier, they could have made the March board meeting. Instead of looking of May or June to hire new basketball coach, we may have been able to look at April… I hope they hurry before Mr. Taylor gets any offers from some place else.

  27. bowwar March 25, 2015 9:23 am

Considering everything, I think Matlin was the best candidate for the job…I wish him well and the litimus test will be the selection of the next MBB coach. It it is Benji Taylor, I’m not sure if they can put “stipulations” in his contract to address the apparent “concerns” about his personal affairs and overall team discipline. If I was Benji, I’d definitely “shop around” and see if there are other opportunities if the UH position is offered or not…

  28. Ralph March 25, 2015 9:29 am

Our new AD needs to hand pick his own crew, namely, his assistant and associate AD’s- a vision and mission without support is simply words that fall on deaf ears.

Frazier, Donovan and Jay had the same staffing, only the heads were lopped off when the department flowed in red, sooner or later the next AD will ask the proverbial question, can I fire these guys and gal and hire people that will help turn the UHAD around.

  29. A-House March 25, 2015 9:42 am

I would have preferred Keith A as the UHAD, but will accept and work with Matlin; something I had great difficulty with Ben J.

Priority: hire Benji T as HC; change Colorado game back to Saturday; decline moving the UH/AFA game to a Thursday nite; ask Ben J to leave ASAP!!!!

Who will ESPN hire to replace Matlin as he cannot hold both positions simultaneously.

  30. Tiki808 March 25, 2015 9:59 am

Never heard of him. But ok.

  31. SteveM March 25, 2015 10:01 am

    Good morning everyone!

    Welcome aboard to Dave Matlin!

    RE: #25
Ralph — tradition has top level subordinates submitting their resignation to the new boss… who then has the option of accepting or declining. Not done today?

  32. NorthShoreFan March 25, 2015 10:10 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

Mahalo tom, sent off mail to kimo. waiting for reply. calendar is open so hope to see many Tsaikos there. party, party party….time to support and do something good.
asked kimo to post “things to do” so peeps can bring needed equipment.

    IMUA WARRIORS!

  33. NorthShoreFan March 25, 2015 10:12 am

#28, courtesy resignation….so new chief can select own peeps. usually submitted by “at will” peeps.

  34. Derek March 25, 2015 10:16 am

When I told my friend that it’s down to Matlin and Amemiya, he replied “either way, we’re screwed.” For what it’s worth, my friend said, Rick would have been good for the program. We’ll see what happens going forward, or backward!

  35. Tiki808 March 25, 2015 10:20 am

We came out of a time period where athletics was with Al Noga at UH. To some degree, Matlin is a person few know about. When they do get going, please remember, KIF is not it.

  36. jimmy the lock March 25, 2015 10:26 am

Congrats Matlin, hope the approval process is smooth. Go Matlin!

Derek, your friend boycotting UH football like you too?

  37. H-man March 25, 2015 10:27 am

Expect concerts at the SSC. Maybe even at Aloha Stadium to raise funds for UHAD.

  38. NorthShoreFan March 25, 2015 10:32 am

maybe Tom Moffet should be on the UH fundraising committee.

  39. ArcumFortis March 25, 2015 10:39 am

Matlin seems a good hire to me. I had a little bit of a “knight in shining armor” feeling with Keith Amemiya. Amemiya just seems like a very solid guy with good local connections and a track record of making things work. But on balance Dave Matilin has more relevant experience, so for me he wins by a nose. But either would have been fine with me. I wish them both the best. When hired anew you probably have the best chance to make meaningful change. I hope there is a decisive sense of moving ahead. This includes the men’s BB coach. I know I am not privy to all the details of Benjy’s life and behind the scenes performance but I was more of a BB fan this year than in a long time. This was largely due to Benjy’s ability to motivate his players to play fast pace and successful and entertaining ball. I say give him a good two year contract with the future wide open if the team is successful.

  40. islandman March 25, 2015 11:06 am

UH basketball coach job posted today, per another forum. Closing date of April 13, 19 days from today.

    http://www.pers.hawaii.edu/wuh/nadvert.aspx?rn=20866

  41. Tiki808 March 25, 2015 11:12 am

  42. primo March 25, 2015 11:29 am

    did they call, 422-tutu-tutu

  43. jimmy the lock March 25, 2015 11:41 am

The VB staff couldn’t get the transportation the day before from the motor pool and arrange for a driver? There was ample time to plan.

  44. jimmy the lock March 25, 2015 11:43 am

Hey Da Punchbowl Kid, is your avatar a picture of Tiki808?

  45. hon2255 March 25, 2015 11:43 am

Good luck to Matilin, the ad for the BB coaching position needs to be posted like yesterday !, Matilin needs to interview qualified candidates and also re BT and bottom line , lack of team disipline on off court and on court issues , his background check as well as with all the others that apply. Integrity, Experience, ability to Recruit , having students all academically in line ,will all be apart of this coaching qualifications.

  46. 808warriorfan March 25, 2015 11:50 am

Best of luck to new AD Dave Matlin…hopefully we’ll get some fresh ideas with thinking “outside the box” and not the “that’s how we’ve always done it” w/ the “good old boy network”. At least he’ll understand / know the local culture, people, and the passion we have for UH Sports. Job #1 lock up Benjy, Job #2 make sure Laura Beeman is happy, Job #3 sit Norm’s okole down and tell he’d better win this year. Should we get tot he point during the FB season that we are not bowl eligible, cut the ties w/ Norm and start the hiring process immediately. Of course there’s the fundraising part…..Good luck Dave

  47. Rodney March 25, 2015 12:03 pm

    #39 right on!!

  48. kev-1 March 25, 2015 12:25 pm

I don’t know enough about him to really say whether or not I like the hire. I am a bit disappointed that it isn’t Amemiya, but who knows how he would have been either.

One thing I will say is that if Matlin has been able to keep the Hawaii Bowl around even though the attendance has been poor and no one seems interested if UH is not in it, he may be a good get.

  49. Fei Jai March 25, 2015 12:26 pm

No surprise with hyphenated man naming AD man as AD. Similarity breeds liking, it is said.

More of the same old shiz.

A Yoshida would name a Amemiya. A Chang would name a Ching. Nothing new here today.

then why you keep hanging around?

  51. Inyoface March 25, 2015 12:38 pm

Doesn’t matter, probably have another AD in 2 years like usual when everyone is crying there’s no money.

  52. Inyoface March 25, 2015 12:42 pm

Hope Chow will loosen up the players and not micromanage every single play which makes the players robotic and overthink everything. Sorta how Benjy let the players play with the basketball team.

  53. Ya_think March 25, 2015 12:43 pm

I hope this guy had the smarts to tell them the only way he takes the job is if he can bring in his own staff of Ass’t AD’s, the last three where told they could not.

Also the first thing this the new AD should do is axe AKA the black hole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  54. A-House March 25, 2015 12:49 pm

seems football has taken a month off for 2016 and beyond recruiting

al – tom: what does your “birdie” tweet/say?

I do hope that beeman and taylor can be successful recruiting for 2016!

when does Ben jay depart???????? tomorrow??? or must wait until official sanction from the BOR – hey, acting chancellor – don’t wait for 4/16/15 – send a memo out today asking for their approval; OR must wait for official mtg?

  55. A-House March 25, 2015 12:52 pm

transportation to HNL airport – call airport service companies – may be cheaper than taxi

we can get service to our door step for 4 and only cost us $45 one way! w/ vans, maybe only 4 necessary for entire team and coaching staff.

  56. A-House March 25, 2015 12:55 pm

    #52:

what was so special about the current 3 associate ADs?

who made the decision that “current” staff stays in place?

  57. Derek March 25, 2015 12:59 pm

On the contrary, we will continue to support UH athletics and we will always root for our UH mens and womens teams. Our entire family attended and graduated from UH. You cannot deny that the UH athetic dept. leadership is sore lacking since Herman Frazier and forward. Not to mention the politics behind hit. I guess you could say that there has been a lot of frustration out there for many years. The fiscal problems, travel subsidies, the mounting football losses, the mounting baseball losses, etc. etc. But, every year we keep hoping this is the year. Hope is eternal. We won’t stop hoping that UH win a national championship, a conference championship. Yes, sir, we are going to chase championships! Hehe!
Pac 12? That’s another whole subject.

  58. st. anthony trojan March 25, 2015 1:09 pm

THINGS CHANGE CONSTANTLY UP THERE…. but they still stay the same…me can’t really understand…..why after years n years of getting a team to the airport…we are still having difficulty……getting them there….or just sumthing new this year…

  59. alamihi crab March 25, 2015 1:26 pm

  61. kev-1 March 25, 2015 1:45 pm

#51 … I think the basketball team would have had an even better season if Coach Taylor had managed them a bit more. I get what you’re saying though. In the case of the bball team, I think they could have used a little more structure. There were points in the season and in games that you could tell they weren’t doing what the coach wanted them to do.

  62. hitman March 25, 2015 1:46 pm

    aloha everyone !!
well here we go again !! they ask you help by giving time or money to them at the UH !! then they come again to us when times are hard at the UH !! they say it hawaii team !! the state team !! and the people give for the love of there home team!!
hoping for change and a better tomorrow !! and i believed that the people of hawaii was asking for Keith Amemiya or Rick Blangiardi as the new AD !!
and what did we get Dave Matlin as the new AD !!
this is the best for the job !! makes u think that run one football game a year and a basketball & Diamond Head Classic maybe 12 game in a week !! hard to think that this would be the best to be the new AD
hope that we not going be looking foe a new in less then 3 years !!

  65. Ya_think March 25, 2015 2:42 pm

#55 – Mr. House – I’m sorry it was the last two not the last three. Mr. Donovan and Mr. Jay where told they had to retain Calpp, McNamara and Moniz Kaho’ohanohano.

Now anyone with any management knowledge at all knows you bring in your own team, especially if your brought in to clean up a mess.

  66. cappie the dog March 25, 2015 2:45 pm

    Okay.

    Get it done.

Hire a basketball head coach, preferably Benjy Taylor.

    And start recruiting.

    Hurry up.

  67. Trunks420 March 25, 2015 2:46 pm

I already miss Ben Jay already sense the impending doom coming for UH.

    #50 totally agree

What can the new AD do that BJ hasn’t done or tried to do already.

  68. cocobean March 25, 2015 2:53 pm

I wanted Amemiya but I’m fine with Matlin. Amemiya showed his behind the scenes clout by getting into the final two discussion even though the search committee didn’t deem him qualified (didn’t interview him) and had recommended Matlin weeks ago. I hope Amemiya’s backers don’t get all habut and turn a cold shoulder when Matlin comes a calling.

  69. Trunks420 March 25, 2015 2:54 pm

Maybe work a deal with San Jose Idaho and Fresno State.

Play two or more home or away games with them and have them pay UH if they choose to host us for all games.

  70. jimmy the lock March 25, 2015 3:02 pm

    Da Punchbowl Kid,

Go to gravatar and change your avatar. Isn’t that where you created your current avatar?

  71. Turk March 25, 2015 3:09 pm

I hope Dave Matlin has a plan B for his career: recent history suggests he will be out of work in a few years.

The committee made the customary mistake of overlooking the need for someone who has extensive experience working inside the University of Hawaii bureaucracy for all things great and small. Any other ability is useless if the AD does not understand how the layers of each office’s bureaucracy impacts proposed actions.

The UH bureaucracy changes people; people don’t change the bureaucracy.

  72. Tiki808 March 25, 2015 3:14 pm

I think we should remember why they picked Dave Matlin. With all the local media and news hype on local players good enough to play in Hawaii, only some can play and will be on the team. Let’s remember the rule of thumb first, all the not so good players, try to kick them off the team on every effort or opportunity. We’ll have a better choice of recruits always available. One good hopeful thought they’ll remember. Especially football players, this is where money is spent and needed the most.

  73. cocobean March 25, 2015 3:18 pm

#67. I’m a life long UH fan or at least since 68′ my freshman year there. There have been times when I have utterly disgusted with the running of the UHAD and the performance of the football team. Don’t know how many times I’ve said “no mo”, “I give up.” I think Derek was having one of those moments.

Most people say hiring a men’s BB coach should be the first order of business. I agree. To me football season ticket renewals should be a close second. The dead line to renew is 3/30. That’s next week Monday and I’m still undecided if I should renew my tickets or not. I think there’s a lot of people like me who are feeling is it worth it or not. Matlin should make every effort to convince people like me to renew. He should extend it a couple of weeks. Let Spring practice get into full swing. Get the football juices running in my veins again. I know if I let my seats go I’ll never buy season tickets again.

  74. Derek March 25, 2015 3:21 pm

Jimmy the Lock, funny how people spend time to look up old blogs of what people said. I must have made an impression!!!!! Hehe! But, you know what, I can change my mind tomorrow as people do all the time. But, I haven’t changed my prediction, yet!

  75. Da Punchbowl Kid March 25, 2015 3:25 pm

  83. Tiki808 March 25, 2015 5:14 pm

KHON2 news has the Matlin story on now. 5:00 p.m. news show. I think this idea of Los Angeles to Honolulu, to being better than you is only true if you’re an athlete still. Everyone else falls under a different category. We work, we earn, we eat, we save, we spend. What else are you going to be classified as? It is one inclination from locals to mainland tensions. Our way of life. Culture in Hawai’i.

San Diego is a big area. I meant location and land mass area. If you can understand this thought. Tensions will arise. But nothing anyone can’t handle.

Can’t believe Boise States stadium only seats 37k throughout all the those great years. No wonder it always looked full.

We have highways and freeways. San Diego has I5 or I10 or interstate highways. We have Waimea Bay, they have Hunnington Beach. We have pineapples, they have apples. We have 40 stories buildings, they have 80 stories buildings. We have Honolulu zoo, they have San Diego zoo. We have high school sports, they have community ball, then onto wherever league they want. We have astronomy and space explorations, they have Intels and microprocessor chips. We have Oceanography, they have engineering and sciences. Do you see the comparisons? Pretty big, if you’re one who skips all of this and you’re in sports or academics at UH. We have lots of oceans, they have more land use. We have buses, they have rail roads and rail transits.

The return of the prodigal son.

We got to support the Bows, Wahine, Warriors whether we like the AD, Coaches, Janitors or whoever in the Athletic Department -= not just lip service.

But the opening of Grand Canyon is 1 mile and 277 miles of mountains cliffs. No where in Hawai’i they have this monument. Arizona state. 2 days drive.

@50. You must have graduated near the bottom of your class if you have to ask.

Reading the blog today. Last sentence.

Considerable savings or a bunch of bull?

    Bull.

Here’s the link to Robert’s Hawaii price list:

    http://www.robertshawaii.com/rh/docs/fact_sheets/Transportation_Oahu_%28Groups%29.pdf

Do the math. Which is cheaper-the cost of 5 taxis from UH or booking a Mini Coach (25 seats). Mini Coach is cheaper. Taxis run $30-$35 apiece to the airport, whereas one (I would think) could hire a Mini Coach for a better rate/savings than using 5 taxis. Plus I would think Roberts would have a discounted rates/one way trip prices/non-peak hour prices with UH (as a good customer). Where did the blog host come up with his information?

    Gotcha JM.

    Great Morning All!

It’s a New Day for UHAD.

Good Luck and Best Wishes to the new AD.

    GO BOWS!

  96. 3-Prong March 26, 2015 7:07 am

Has the BOR, Pres or Chancellor specifically mentioned that the new AD will have full autonomy?

Hopefully a new dawn in Hawaii Athletics. Let’s Go Bows!

  97. 3-Prong March 26, 2015 7:26 am

What? Per Portnoy, AD position won’t be confirmed until April 16 when BORs meet.

  98. 808warriorfan March 26, 2015 8:43 am

#70 “Jimmy the Lock” … Now that we know your halftime prediciton for the UH vs Ohio State game, what’s your prediction on the final score ?????

  99. 808warriorfan March 26, 2015 8:44 am

#86 “Pono” … Me too … if everyone who calls themselves a UH fans gives just $20 it could make a difference.

3-Prong #97 “Has the BOR, Pres or Chancellor specifically mentioned that the new AD will have full autonomy?”

    Dream on!

My hope is that he does have full autonomy. But the reality is that he would not – which was the problem that Ben Jay and Jim Donovan had faced.

    But one can only hope

  101. Boolakanaka March 26, 2015 8:48 am

JM, all of the designated matches were completed today.

  102. Shoko March 26, 2015 8:51 am

Wouldn’t waste anytime researching for a new head men’s basketball coach even if the AD is not officially confirmed. Lots of qualified, up-and-coming basketball assistants around the country are looking for their first head coaching gig.

Wait too long and UH might miss out.
