While there is the seemingly endless debate on Aloha Stadium’s viability, we have learned — through Tom’s daily reminders — that UH has more pressing concerns on the Lower Campus.
Because of construction, a staircase and the main entrance to the athletic complex are closed, at least through spring break.
Gym I, used for volleyball practices (as well as a badminton club), appears old and worn.
What appears to be the original wallpaper is disintegrating.
There are three scoreboards that have not been operable for years.
A-House’s once gorgeous rock garden is in disarray, like a sore loser’s Scrabble board.
The sand volleyball courts look nice. Let’s hope they remain that way in a few years.

Mahalo to Rainbow Cliff for the coming up with the encased-jersey display that will serve to honor the memory of Reggie Carter and other UH athletes who have passed. Former UH basketball player Henry Hollingsworth will house the display. That relationship shows the bonds of sports. Carter was a New York City guard who also was a skilled rebounder. He might have been the program’s second-best player (behind Tom Henderson). Hollingsworth joined after competing in an open tryout.
Not sure what your calendar says, but today is tax day. I’n meeting with the CPA today. If a guy with a bowtie, pocket calculator and horn-rimmed glasses knocks on your door, just say, “Yes, I’m Stephen’s dependent.”

He’s such an obscure player, I can’t really find anything on the Internet, but I’m pretty sure that he has passed on. I remember him, because he shot free-throws like DeMarcus Cousins.
When news broke on Reggie Carter, I had thought Reggie Cross died. Did that happen to anybody else?
Why didn’t Cross just go to the 76ers rookie camp, and just play…He was a second-round draft pick, but the Sixers first pick, so he mistakenly believed that he had some leverage. Watching UC Santa Barbara’s Alan Williams dredged up fond memories of Cross on senior night, when the future looked so bright for him.
On another note, Keith Shamberger’s career died in Missouri. In the SEC conference tournament opener, he didn’t even start.
I could root for Arizona State’s Bo Barnes, Valparaiso’s Jordan Coleman, and Seattle’s Manroop Clair, but not Shamberger, who seemed to pull a team insurrection, mid-game, by not passing the ball to Christian Standhardinger in that Big West conference tournament opener against CS Northridge.
Alissa “I Can Run Really Fast, But That’s My Only Skill” Campanero played one season for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, then disappeared. I thought she should have stayed with the program. Monica DeAngelis was not exactly a considerable upgrade at the point.
ST, I must have forgotten that fact of Hollingsworth joining after an open try out. I’m surprised he wasn’t recruited because he was a good guard and great shooter. Too bad Reggie Carter didn’t get to finish his career here.
It’s 23 days until my annual call to tell my CPA to file my extension letter.
#13. Don’t remember anything about open tryouts but I do remember HH started out on the JV team. Can’t recall who the JV played but HH was scoring 30+ points a game before he was “promoted” to the varsity.

My little birdie (as opposwed to AL’s Big Bird”) says:

I honestly don’t know what they (Facilities and Maintenance) do but complain about lack of staff and resources.
I’ve tried to convince our current AD to at least turn landscaping back to Upper Campus, but obviously he has other pressing issues. Upper Campus facilities & maintenance would love to have landscaping back because Lower Campus lack of care for landscaping reflects on the Upper Campus. I will continue my quest when the new AD comes in.
As for facilities such as walkways and old broken scoreboards – I don’t know why these things continue to go unattended and maintained. Me and Charlie Wade have a Stan Sheriff exterior landscaping project scheduled for April 4th – we’ve already started prepping by powerwashing and spraying RoundUp around the arena, and ‘yes’ it’s just me and Charlie doing it till April 4th…it’s sad, but if we want this place to be presentable to recruits, recruits parents, fans, supporters, etc we need to do this stuff ourselves.”
The “I” is a staffer and has to remain Annoymous but does point out a lot of staffers do contribute their own time and effort doing things that F&M should be doing.
Example: Coach Coolen raking and maintaining the softball field; Coach Shoji looking for a machine to maintain the volleyball courts, Coach Wade powerhosing the area and weeding etc etc etc
We got knuckleheads running the Hawaii program. There should be 2 local TV deals for UH sports, 1 for football only and 1 for the other Big West sports. Put them up for bids. The MWC is benefiting from non-football sports as it is now by them telling us we can either be a part of the MWC deal or keep your own deal. Should there be 2 local TV deals, Hawaii should give the money to the MWC for the football TV only and take its share of the MWC TV deal instead. We should make out more that way. Then keep all the money for the Big West sports deal. It doesn’t take much to figure that out.
Why is it so hard for state built facilities to factor in maintenance costs? Especially at schools at every level especially at UH and the high schools. At my sons’ college in the midwest the gardens are dug up and replanted every year because of the weather and the grounds are immaculate with trees trimmed and leaves raked. The facilities from classroom buildings to dorms to gyms and fields just sparkle. Maintenance of the facilities never seemed to be compromised because of costs. And he’s been there for seven years now for grad school. It’s frustrating to see even the UH parking garage with large oil spots left untouched for what seems like forever forcing people to dodge hazardous areas. As usual it will take someone to slip and file a lawsuit for things to change costing much more than if they simply had a maintenance schedule.

Deferred maintenance is rampant in the public schools as well.
It is a very short sighted way to budget because deferred maintainance causes serious problems over time that become serious and expensive repairs or even go past the point of no return to where they need to be replaced or renovated. Even expensive landscaping goes unmaintained and plants die, lack of paint leads to deterioration of buildings that leads to water intrusion and serious repair costs, loss of air tight seals on windows leads to strain on HVAC and mold growth, water enters electrical equipment and fixtures causing shorts and dangerous faults. Roof leaks turn into water in walls, ceilings, and floors. Doors and window frames deteriorate so they are no longer secure leading to theft. You get the picture.

I bet with all these issues going on around campus and upper campus, having a few of you diehard Tsaiko’s on board would help get things DONE around campus….pretty sure there’s some powerful people on this site, there’s always good ideas being tossed around…me, i’m just a troll so no help here as my brain isn’t physically strong enough for logical thinking…just randomness. But i do own season tickets and yell like hell when at the games if that counts. Put me in coach!!! smokemup

In years past, around spring time, I recall volunteer clean-up day in the lower campus. A-House proudly manned the pressure washer and the Tsai-ko Wahine softball supporters help Bob Coolen with sprucing up the stadium and area. I personally have not noticed any announcements this year.
I know there was some discussion about it being frowned upon because of potential personally liability/injury issues. I think the A.D. has to approve…or at least not forbid it. Perhaps Pomai, the Wahine Softball booster club leader, can share his insights here.
Also, jm2375 , an avid booster for the Men’s Volleyball team, might have some observations.

Deferred maintenance is nothing new. Sometimes they get to the point when it gets to be a health hazard. When I worked at School of Public Health back in the 90s, the carpets had gotten flooded more than a couple of times before they were finally replaced after several years. In the meantime, mold grew (and I’m not talking about the faculty 😆 ) The Lab School/College of Ed bldg that burned down in 2006 still had lead paint. Not sure if it’s still the case, but Kinau Hale (Dept of Health) still had asbestos in the ceiling as late as 2000.

Sorry to hear about Carter’s passing but don’t think he deserves recognition as a UH player as, if I remember correctly, he only played his freshman year with UH than packed his bags and left as the roof caved in on the program. Could have been a star here – he chose not to gut it out – he don’t deserve any special honors at UH.
12. cappie –Shamburger played the most minutes of any other Missouri player this season. I think he started every game, except the last one. Maybe the coach wanted to let the freshman guard start in the last game. He also had a very good last home game, 21 pts., 7 of 14 FG’s; 3 of 6, 3 pt FG’s; 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 TO; 1 blk ; 1 steal in 36 minutes. He made the winning basket with 10 seconds left. Though the record was 9-23, 3-15.

Get plenty UH athletes who only played one season. Bottom line is they earned their letter and will always be recognized as a UH athlete. ST said that Henry Hollingsworth will house the display.
31. A-House —How do you know Jim used his own money and didn’t get reimbursed later ? He spent a lot of UH money on food, etc. for various reasons.
Generally, any public money spent is supposed to be for a public purpose and authorized by law.

Good evening Tsaiko Nation, If I may set the record straight on the jersey honoring Reggie Carter, as Mr. Tsai is partially right with the story. The jersey was to go to Reggie Carter’s mother who never saw her son played for Hawaii. It was a request made to me from Henry Hollingsworth, a teammate and friend who played along with Reggie during that tough year 1975-76 when UH sanctions came down after the cutter ford commercial. Unfortunately due to a glaring error from a uh athletic official the jersey never came in time for Mrs. Carter as she passed away with no lasting memories of her son ever playing as a Rainbow Warrior. When this story went viral on this blog it got attention from a lot of good uh supporters here in LA and Hawaii who wanted to turn this wrong into a right. The Hawaii jersey came to me Saturday with the #13 to honor Reggie Carter children as it will be mailed to his best friend and teammate Henry Hollingsworth who will present the jersey to Reggie’s children in honor of their father playing for UH. The reason Reggie Carter did not finish his career at UH he was just 18 years of age with NCAA investigators threatening his eligibility and Bruce O’ Neal being dismissed as head coach from the team, there was no one he could turn too for support and advise. Lawyer Tom Mui who is a blogger on this site stood toe to toe with NCAA investigators stopping their harassment and intimidation tactics not only to Reggie Carter but Henry Hollingsworth and George Lett who also was involve with the commercial. With all three being young and confused with no direction from the athletic department they all decided to transfer to other schools in which today their are regrets but when your 18 and 19 years old decisions at this age can be for the better or for the worst. Bottom line before Reggie Carter dying of a heart attack at 42 years of age they enjoyed playing for Hawaii and have fond memories of die hard Hawaiian fans and blaisdel arena being the sporting spectacle for some great games. In closing being a former player at Hawaii with many former bows leaving this earth so tragically because of medical illness or poor decisions in life I find it heart breaking not only their lives are gone but their memories playing for Hawaii left empty with their love ones never knowing their GREATNESS wearing the Rainbow uniform of their era. The Hawaii jersey going to Reggie Carter’s children comes from desire and love to turn a negative into a positive as the aloha spirit will always rise to the top. I am proud to have this spirit for my 5 years playing at UH and when I can inspire it to aid my fellow rainbros and share it with their love ones then I know what it truly means to be a “proud rainbow warrior”. Always the best to you GREAT folks of Tsaiko Nation as I continue to represent the 808 with pride, dignity and respect !

To this day the 2 game series in 75′ between the Bows featuring 6’3″ Reggie Carter, 5’11” Henry Hollingsworth, 6’7″ George Lett, 6’9″ Melton Werts, and 7’0″ Tommy Barker verses and the San Francisco Dons featuring 6’6″ Winfred Boynes, 6’8″ James Hardy, and 7’0″ Bill Cartright is as epic a battle that has ever played out on the Blaisdell Center Court.
UH AD show should be business mindset also. Popular and marketable.
Rainbow Cliff, thanks for setting the record straight, and acting to honor Reggie Carter. Turfwar’s account of the game in 1975 brings back memories of Klum Gym days trying to find some way of winning a pickup one on one game against some of these same Rainbow basketball players. Of course, if I was having a good day hitting my outside shot and got the score close, they would start playing defense, and taking it hard to the hoop at which point I realized how outclassed I was.

Absolutely those games that 75 year vs. the Dons were truly Classic !
I was not there but I saw them both on beta in the coaches office the following year and as you well stated it was an epic battle of games that a sell out blaisdel arena will ever watch live of two GREAT teams going head to head. UH winning the first game 81-80 with my guy Henry Hollingsworth going for 24 and then the second night a double overtime thriller with UH losing 105 to 103 as Tommy Barker taking home the leading scorer honors with 24. That 75-76 season was brutal with a schedule not only of the ranked San Francisco team but Missouri, Oregon, USC, Arizona, ASU, St. Johns, Seton Hall, U Mass, Washington, Stanford, UNLV and Pan- American. The program played an independent schedule and with out a doubt all of us agreed to this day we would not have it any other way. Playing the best competition around the country with sell out games every night in front of some LOUD adoring Hawaiian fans I can’t tell you it made me and my fellow bows PROUD wearing the Hawaii Rainbow uniform. We played with our HEARTS every night and left it all on the floor giving our best efforts. That 75-76 season was a test of will as the NCAA just kept coming with violations and literally destroyed the team. But through will and determination those players stuck to the course finishing out that season as Tom Mui will ALWAYS be a UH basketball hero standing up for many of those players who had no legal defense (pro bono) as during that time NCAA was barracudas as many investigators flying over just intimidating the entire roster as then there was no compliance department in which we have now with other support groups PROTECTING our athletes. That is why Reggie Carter and that team will always be great bows as they endured such tough times being so young. His children will touch that jersey and hang it in their home knowing that their Father played for a State that truly admire his great play. May his soul and other fallen bows always rest in PEACE !

Yeah, those pick-up games in Klum gym as you re-collect were some outstanding play. It was who’s who from all the local and inner Island colleges just dazzling their skills on the side courts with many former GREAT bows coming down for a competitive workout as I never forgot John Pennebacker playing one time as his jumping ability was legendary. Hearing about the Fab 5 was all you heard and to finally see one my curiosity was at it’s highest peek. JC transfer John Moore who was on my team said to me quietly “he was going to dunk on Pennebacker” as being just a wide eye young freshmen I just listened attentively as when there was a run out throw him the ball and IF Pennebacker was back he was going to ram it down his throat. Well during the scrimmage about 10 minutes into play I was leading on the break and Moore sprinted out for the release as I threw him a perfect pass as John Pennebacker sprinted back as the moment was to arise as John Moore who had hops got up but there was no ball when he finished as Pennebacker PINNED the ball off the glass and kept control of it going the other way. We just stopped with disbelief with what we just saw as John Moore had to sprint back with his shameless face during a dead ball giving Penebacker a pat on the back knowing the stories on his jumping ability was true. That is when I knew Hawaii had truly GREAT players !
Lopaka, that reminds of a pick-up game, at Klum, I think early 80s, in which two local boys, were giving all they could take to then-current members of the UH b-ball team. The two local boys if I recall correctly were Chico Furtado and Bruce Mann (all-state at Kalaepohaku).
I was standing by Red Rocha, and he commented, ” a couple of those boys are about to lose their scholarship”

As a child, I used to imitate Larry Jones’ funky free-throw stylings.
My favortite player was Antoine Goodlow. I remember he had his breakout game against College of the Ozarks.
I was very young.
I didn’t know any better.
These were my heroes.
One of the best BB games I ever saw was in 1960 at Klum gym when UH beat Oregon St who was ranked #3 in the country
Our center was Tony (forgot his last name) of 6′ 11″ and thin as a rail – there was a “gunner” guard from Jersey – Norman Ching and Norbie Mendes – a 6’8″ forward named Green who always came into our dorm room to borrow comic books – a 6’7″ part Asian player named Al
my roommate was a post doctoral student from India attending the East West Center – one, after class, I returned to the room and he was gone – 3 months later another India student told me that he was a Captain in the India Army, was sent to the border in their dispute with China and died a the border.

Played against Penebacker when he was working as a special assistant to the State Librarian and he was way past his prime. Unfortunately for me, his out to pasture talents was beyond my athletic ability. Reality sucks.

Henry Hollinsgworth was listed as 5’11″+
I was standing next to him one day and looked at Henry in the eye or even slightly looking down at his eye and said “Henry, you are no 5’11” He smiled and dribbled away.
I was then about 5’8, 5’9″.
That’s the 2″ rule. Same rule in the bedroom. 😆
