    Spieler-Urban win 21-7

I know Cal isn’t necessarily a top team but Spieler is playing so well. 14 kills alone in that set is impressive. Strand-Ma’a mentioned she is graduating this year, hoping she comes back for her fifth year .

    Spieler-Urban win 21-7, 21-19. UH wins 5-0

  3. Cindy Luis March 22, 2015 8:14 pm

spieler finishes with 21 kills. She is Strand-Ma’a’s niece.
she might come back for another year.
Very smart young lady. high school’s scholar-athlete. believe she had enough AP credits to almost be a sophomore when she came to UH.
Cal does not offer scholarships. Feller hopes it will happen soon.

I can only imagine that UH would have been unsoppable if Ginger Long and Ali Longo returned…..lol

  5. Cindy Luis March 22, 2015 8:21 pm

Couple of great serves by Taylor. UH 1 wins 21-14

  6. warriorfan March 22, 2015 8:23 pm

Long/Longo were a solid pairing and would at least be number 4 flight this year, definitely would have made UH stronger.

I thought I heard Long might come back next year for her final year of eligibility though on the sand??

  7. warriorfan March 22, 2015 8:24 pm

Nikki is playing fastastic tonight. I love her jump float serve.

  8. Brandon March 22, 2015 8:25 pm

Nikki jump serve is nice. Its not super powerful like higgins, but its accurate and though. Wonder how it would be indoor.

Justine is a stud on the sand. I know she’s has a couple medals for it as well from her childhood.

With Sand Volleyball gaining NCAA sponsorship next season, do you see the big west conference awarding a championship for the sport?

  10. surfboy March 22, 2015 8:44 pm

At warriorfan…i hope Long does return

  11. surfboy March 22, 2015 8:45 pm

    Scores please

    9 no, hot yet

tied 21-21 in Set 2. Uh won Set 1

  14. warriorfan March 22, 2015 8:49 pm

Tied at 21 in second set.

  15. Cindy Luis March 22, 2015 8:50 pm

UH rallies for 23-21. held off two set points

  16. surfboy March 22, 2015 8:50 pm

    Nice

  17. warriorfan March 22, 2015 8:51 pm

UH won coming from behind . I’m surprised Nebraska won two flights. Hope coach Hall goes back to Schreiber/tucker and Chow/Boyan.

  18. surfboy March 22, 2015 8:51 pm

Nice win, but im thinking spieler/urban should be the number 1 pair as of now

  19. Brandon March 22, 2015 8:51 pm

Justine and ostrander are pretty good. Justine made some amazing digs. ostrander needs to work on shot selection, but they’ll be pretty good in the pairs championships.

  20. Brandon March 22, 2015 8:53 pm

Also, Don’t count nikki and tiegs out. They’re VERY VERY good, but they just started playing with each other. They need to get better chemistry and they’ll be deadly. Spieler makes people good. She could very well play in the number one flight based on skills, but her height is holding her back.

  21. surfboy March 22, 2015 8:57 pm

Yes it would be nice that both girls could be tall however in beach its not uncommon for the small to be a defender. Wong orantes is just above 5 ft herself and on #1

  22. surfboy March 22, 2015 9:03 pm

IMHO Urban/Spieler are playing better ball and should be #1 …when Tiegs and Taylor get more comfortavle together I agree that they will be UNSTOPPABLE!

  23. R.M March 22, 2015 9:10 pm

8 nikki actually jump serve against texas on Thursday and she had a pretty good run on the second set. And yes! I wasn’t as powerful as Higgins but it looks good

I like that Tiegs and Taylor is switching now giving Tiegs a chance to block ‘ coz i think that’s the biggest adjustment for her. I think she never have a partner as big as nikki before which makes her a primary defender.

  24. Brandon March 22, 2015 9:43 pm

    22. I agree that you can be short while playing sand, but you don’t want two short people. You need someone tall to make those crucial blocks and hard hitting kills.

    23. Thank you! Im excited to have 3 jump servers on the team in Manu, Higgins and Taylor. Along with granato, who’s serve is pretty good (possible starter). Hawaiis block and serving should be equally as tough this year.

  25. Cindy Luis March 22, 2015 11:21 pm

    17. why are you surprised?
Tucker’s back issues forced them to switch pairs. We’ll see who they use this week.
    19. it’s Ostrander’s second year in sand. Thought she played pretty well.

Tiegs-Taylor have a different style than Spieler-Urban for sure. And it was a different style than Spieler-Taylor from last year. Out of the four, feel that Spieler is the best of the group. very smart player.

  26. Brandon March 22, 2015 11:55 pm

Fully Agree cindy. If not for tiegs, taylor and spieler would be the number one pair. Also, make spieler 5’9-6’0 and IMO, she would have olympic potential. She made some spectacular plays. I didn’t think she would have much of an indoor career playing behind longo, but on the sand, she’s just a totally different player. She is truly a great athlete.

  27. setaone March 23, 2015 7:34 am

    Very impressed with Spieler.

Chemistry seems to be very important with women’s athletics. I remember once Al Scates said something along the lines that he could throw any 6 guys on a court and they could win (if they were good athletes/players).

I’m hopeful that Tiegs/Taylor can build that chemistry. Right now, it seems like they don’t have it yet. Still early though, but the Sand season is so short.

warriors are #1 in the first RPI released today … plenty of matches left though. let’s see if that holds up … three (ucsd, ucla & stanford) of the four teams that hawaii has left on its schedule have very poor win/loss records, including ucsd who is 0-15.
