Didn’t have time to get to this earlier but Hawaii is close to releasing its fall volleyball schedule
As always, they have to wait for football schedule and the MWC schedule makers apparently did the Wahine no favors.and neither did the Big West when putting a number of Wahine home matches in the same week as home football games
I haven’t seen the Big West volleyball schedule. I just know that Shoji not happy and is trying to work out the Friday-Sunday thing.
So, no, I don’t know how many matches that means Manu-Olevao misses if she again decides not to play on Sundays.
At the moment (because we all know how things change if TV wants to), there are football games on 6 Saturdays: Sept. 19, Oct. 10, Oct. 31, Nov. 14, Nov. 21, Nov. 28
As for the non-conference opponents, have mentioned several but think these are what you are going to get for the three tournaments
UCLA, American, Iowa; Oregon State, Wichita State (forget the third, wasn’t a huge name); and Florida, San Diego State and Eastern Washington.
there also will be two home matches with Cal State Bakersfield to fill a bye week. Interesting note, think I’ve mentioned before, that both Bakersfield and Sac State have made inquiries about joining the Big West, but their interest cooled after being told they don’t get the Hawaii travel subsidy. the agreement Hawaii has is that any new teams that joint either the Big West or Mountain West in football don’t have Hawaii paying for the travel here.
At first glance, not a strong schedule again. Florida match should be good, hope they are a top 3 team next season.
It’s not “strong” but it should be solid for rpi. American, Wichita state, Oregon state and ucla all shod make the tourbament, and Florida will for sure, and be seeded. And iowa in the b1g should be a help. Somewhat.

shows regional diversity and some good conference RPIs. UH can only control what UH can control, which is beating who they play.
The issue now is that people don’t want to play Hawaii because the Big West teams RPI drags numbers down.
Bakersfield matches don’t excite me. I guess better than HPU or Chaminade or Tokyo though.
I think UH should go out on the road like they did two years ago to the Wichita tourney , just my opinion.
cindy — if schools are saying they don’t want to play hawaii b/c of the drag that the big west teams will put on their RPI, then i would argue that those schools are being disingenuous. the boost they will get to their RPI from playing hawaii … far outweighs any impact that the big west conference will have on that school’s RPI. just my opinoin …
brandon — along the same lines, i don’t agree that playing iowa will help. they haven’t had a winning season in a long time (unless bond shymansky can work a miracle this season). but iowa having a losing win/loss record will hurt hawaii’s RPI far more than any boost hawaii will get from iowa being in the big-10. unfortunately.
i do agree tho with both of you that the schedule is shaping up to be a solid (but not overly strong) nonconference schedule for RPI purposes, due to the regional diversity of the teams that are slated so far.
for seeding purposes, hawaii maybe needs just one more team to be top 25 in the RPI, since that a team’s record against top 24 RPI teams is one of the considerations for seeding. but maybe hawaii’s RPI will be comfortably within the top 16 so that they will have a chance at being seeded no matter what. florida will be top 25 in the RPI, and ucla usually is (though sometimes their not). maybe one of the other teams like wichita or oregon st will surprise.
i also will agree that it’s appears to be getting tougher to draw schools here. if schools can make it here, shoji might do well to do what he did the other season, and go to the midwest (or someplace else on the mainland) to schedule some tough matches on the road. but as we know, there are always concerns about subjecting the team to too much travel during the regular season. i wonder if there are cost/financial concerns as well.

3. Cindy, I was referring to warriors comment saying it’s not strong. I haven no gripes with schedule. Wish could see some bigger names like wisconsin, stanford, nebraska or psu. But doubt anyone of those teams would come down.
I think i heard Dave saying three matches to be played on Sunday because of UH football games, on sports animals show.
Tiegs is a smart sand volleyball player, knows where to place the ball away from the opponent or whatever you call it.

The problem with taking trips out of conference is they lose too money that they could be making by staying home.

Hawaii seems like they’re struggling. Yet to get a single kill, and have 2 errors. 1 service error and one block error.

Teas up 21-13. Elliott had said he wanted to speed up the offense. And it is quick. Taylor getting set way too much, especially considering she played a long sand match last night, less than 24 hours ago.
Oh I don’t blame nikki at all. I would be tired too. Higgins needs to stop going to her. Distribute it a little more.

what a rally UH wins 25-23
HOLY COMEBACK. Even though play seems sloppy, that was an AMAZING comeback
Wahine were down 17 -23 at one point in the 4th set. Scored 8 straight points. Maglio had seven blocks, including one solo.
UH pulled it out. Higgins moved much better. She has to pay attention to the blockers on the other side. Passing was best in sets two and three. Kahakai was in mid season form. Maglio can be a weapon in the middle. Kolesch needs more reps on the right, she has fire in her belly. I am impressed that UH came back. I think Higgins can get fatigued quickly so hopefully there is a backup plan it that happens…maybe a modified 6-2 with both setters setting back row only which will open up three front row hitters at all times and a backrow escape valve with the BIC or Pipe hitter back row. That could happen if Higgins gets tired or if the front row needs more fire power. UH could be very deep come fall. Texas has better ball control than the last time they were here. Kat at libero and Preito at power was impressive as was the setter.
Didn’t see Higgins fatigued. She was bringing it on her serves until the end.
don’t know if they’ll go with a 6-2. Shoji had hoped to get Koelsch some setting reps but with Taylor tiring, they used Koelsch on the outside.
He said they would have brought Taylor back in if it had gone to 5.
Considering they only had 3 days or practice as a team before tonight, It was an impressive win. Texas coach thought UH was very good, very impressed by Kahakai. Shoji had said earlier that Maglio was the most improved from fall but said tonight that Kahakai was.
Kahakai said she felt much better not wearing the brace. said the brace also reminded her of the injury so without it see felt freer.
Thought Adolpho’s brief stint provided a spark. Her kill made it 20-16.
Texas wasn’t as deep as UH, only had eight available players. but I wouldn’t feel too sorry for them. they have a very good class coming in. As does UH, which is something Elliott also mentioned after the game. He was very aware of Granato and the rest of Hawaii’s new players.
Cindy I agree about Kahakai, and Higgins’ serves were popping tonight. I meant from last season, that Higgins especially at Washington, got fatigued and then it seemed UH lost momentum. So if possible, I’m hoping Shoji and co. will have a back up plan if he sees her tanking during the match. I guess the same goes for any player during the match. Taylor looked tired from the get go. IMHO.
So far, Karch, Sheffiled, and eliot have all made remarks about how talented Granato is. Thats spectacular considering how UNDERRATED she was by prep. That girl will be an AA by her senior year. Mark my words

Acually, i’m not surprised. The wahine could be playing at an open gym someon on this island and some psychotic fan would end up blasting them on this blog for not meeting their own expectations.
As great as Mendoza’s numbers were last year, the Libero position looks to be upgraded with Kahakai next year. She shows that “Hawaii VB IQ” and mentality.
if maglio continues to improve more than she has already then i could definitely see her playing middle opposite magill.
this is the lineup i hope to see come fall, a 6-2 should be utilized with all the talent we have.

i’m sorry but i don’t think tai is going to last in the starting lineup with granato and mitchem coming in. i’m sure she’ll start the first couple of weekends but when she is out on sundays, granato is just going to prove that she’s more than capable of holding her own.
57. sorry don’t see that lineup but it’s not a bad one. We’ll see if a 6-2, modified or other. and we’ll if Maglio stays there or if they move Mitchem to MB.
but Shoji has said that the setting needs to improve. The good thing is Koelsch does bring a lot when she comes in. liked her on the right last night.
