Wondering how Torres is. He slid hard into the table Friday and wasn’t quite the same after. He then hit the standard a couple times after taking off behind the 3-meter line. t’s tied at 6.
Hawaii up 12-8. TO Waves. Warriors hitting .500 to Pep’s 182. Good set distribution by Ramos, too. Running the middle well.
Pepperdine has rallied to 12-11. Timeout UH. all started when Wave setter stuffed Davis Holt when Holt tried to slam back the service over pass. Holt blocked again then Kalmbach slams back the service overpass. This was a bad rotation for Hawaii on Friday when West was serving.
Klll by Sedore, Torres hits long then is stuffed. UH up 15-11 at the TTO.
Wechsung was in for one play, Ramos back in. UH up 21-19.
Ramos gets a kind net, over with an ace. UH up 22-19. TO Waves.
Warriors close it out 25-21.
a much better job from the service line by UH. 3 aces, 2 SEs hit .222 to Pep’s 185. UH 5 blocks to Pep’s 2. Taylor not having a very good night. 2-4-8. Torres with 6 of the team’s 13 kills. For UH 3 kills by Sedore, Marks and arkovic. 2 by Averill, 1 by Holt.
Pepperdine leads 15-13 at the TTO. Couple of service errors have hurt UH. And Jost Taylor has gotten on track, 5-5-25. 3-1-17 for Set 2.
Hawaii has tied it at 17. TO Waves. Impressive solo block by Marks on Torres in the middle of the 3-0 run.
At late TO by the Waves. UH up 21-19. Sedore with a cut shot that ends a long rally.
Pepperdine has come back to tie it at 21. TO UH. kill by Torres and Zarkovic blocked on a tight set from Sedore.
impressive finish for the Warriors, 25-22. 2 kills by Averill ends it.
This new lineup with Sedore starting is very effective. Siki is on fire tonight!! I liked his strong man pose after the kill.
This is the best I’ve seen JP Marks play. his defense and offense when ON are just wow, if he played like this all the time he could easily be POY.
UH hit 343 for the set, Pepperdine 265. Waves have a 10.5-7 edge in blocks, many coming on predictable or out of system sets by the Warriors. 20 digs for UH, 7 by Marks. 14 digs for the Waves
Arkovic 13-4-21, Sedore 8-4-20, Marks 6-1-10, Averill 3-1-4.
For Pepp, Torres 8-5-20, Taylor 7-5-19, Kalmback 5-0-8. UH with 3 aces, 4 SEs overall, Pepperdine 0 aces, 4 SEs.
UH out to a quick 7-2 lead. TO Waves.
WF, I actually think Zarkovic is more impressive. Marks is hitting very smartly tonight.

pepperidine looks like they’ve given up. Marks with a stuff of Kalmbach. it’s 11-3. TO Waves.
Sedore with 3 kills helps UH to a 15-5 lead at the TTO.
Pepperdine has rallied to 24-15. TO UH. it was 24-12.
What a great weekend for Warrior volleyball, hope they keep this up.

I put this on the old blog, but which got buried I think, but I had a thought during Friday’s Warrior Volleyball match… Why Wahine over Warriors? or another way, why Wahine over all other UH sports? I suspect there are as many answers as there are bloggers, but for me it’s the winning tradition (which I associate with Coach Dave), the quality of the players/people up and down the roster, the atmosphere (both at the Stanley and before that at Klum) which have only come together in one program/sport at the UH – Wahine Volleyball. But how do you feel what are your thoughts? I thought of including the media coverage what with Ann & Cindy and Jim & Chris but I don’t really see/hear that until after matches are over. So, I’d go any way. Go Wahine!
How great is it to see local boys playing for Hawaii and doing great.
Marks looks so much more comfortable and relaxed on the left and when he doesn’t have the pressure of having to be the “go to” player. And he’s brings so much defensively. Siki, Sedore and Ramos were brilliant tonight.
Aside from Friday and against UCLA, when is the last time Hawaii defeated a ranked opponent?

Local or not, who cares, its great to see them do well no matter where they are from.

I’ve got a good feeling that they’ll be doing the same to Stanford next weekend also. The momentum seems to be swinging upward.

Cindy, hoping/praying occasionally still for your mom in Sequim…as I feel led to for comfort that is. The good part about the Peninsula is that much like Hawaii/San Diego, it’s always sunny there. It may be cold (it’s Washington) but as things tend to go in the “rain shadow”, sun not rain is generally forcasted.
The then-No. 14 Warriors beat No. 3 Stanford last March 7. Then lost their last 8.
Thank you for remembering my mom. She is improving and hope to be able to bring her back to her home in March. Sequim was sunny and cloudy. it snowed a little the day before I got there. More fog than anything else and i did have to scrape frost off the windshield most mornings after it dropped down to 28-36. But a lovely quaint town.
I am just asking why so many support with their attendance the Wahine but not the Men? I started back in the Klum days watching the Wahine and sometimes the Warriors, but since SSA mostly just Wahine. Wondered why others don’t go to watch men and other arena sports or outdoor sports. That’s all even last night was slow arriving crowd beginning was like a practice for heaven’s sakes…..
Grammy, I think a couple of things have contributed to declining attendance. It has also affected the Wahine volleyball crowd as well.
Specifically for men’s volleyball
1. The switch to boys high school volleyball from fall to spring now conflicts with the college schedule. Nights when high school teams (boys and girls) would come, now the the boys are playing on many of the same nights.
2. Rising cost of tickets and parking.
3. The men’s team hasn’t been doing well. If they continue winning, I think attendance will be better.
As for Sunday, bad weather and the Pro Bowl likely contributed to the low turnout.
Women’s basketball has never drawn well, men’s basketball depends on how well they are doing and how big the opponent is. Baseball is on the upswing, as is softball.
not sure what other sports you are considering. Tennis … no crowd. Golf … no crowd. Sailing … no crowd. And women’s soccer … way out at CORP usually during heavy traffic hours. Folks who live out there likely are just trying to get home and make dinner.
But I do think the winning tradition of Wahine volleyball is the main key. That and the chance for local players to excel. It’s continued since the 70s.
Just some random thoughts …

Mahalo for your reasoned and intelligent reply. I just feel sorry that all athletes, not just Wahine, are not considered more when it comes to options for young families. The Wahine draw families and are a nice option for multi-generational outings. Football with tailgating and the outside setting and parking so wide spread make it less desirable to take a whole family. Baseball before my own family began was a good option for my father, uncles, mom, boyfriend and me, but when I tried to take my daughters they just got bored and thought “Mom is crazy! Cheering and talking to the players!” Softball wasn’t around when my daughter played so, we’d just go to her games. Then there was volleyball and it all came together. Positive role models, quaint closed environment (Klum) and fun crowd. They didn’t always ‘get it’ but I have seen them cheering on their high school teammates and friends, so I know it got through. Just wish I could take my grandson’s to Basketball or Volleyball, too. But if I say, “Who wants to go see the Wahine?, I got to step aside or get run over. Maybe it’s me but I’d like it to be that way with all sports and for all athletes who play for the University of Hawaii. I’m so glad that Coach Dave worked at getting the UH students out to games, wish the department as a whole would consider waiving admission for some/all early season games. I think that would build crowd/school support for athletes and school. Go Wahine!
Students get in free to football, men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball, and baseball. No charge for anyone for softball. UH has never been that big with student attendance and now that it is free, it’s sort of telling that the interest isn’t there.. The men’s basketball team went serenading the dorms before the season started to get the dorm residents interested. It helped some. It’s still a commuter school and most students these days also work besides going to school. Don’t know what the answer is. The department has offered free food and prizes. still not a lot of takers.
Local *does* matter to most fans, Warriofan; I’m surprised you don’t understand that. I’ve always compared HI volleyball to TX or AL football – fans love their hometown/state heroes. Back in Don James’ day, there was a lot of pride in the number of WA HS football players recruited to the Huskies, and won Rose Bowls with.
@Warriorfan….it does matter. So much is made of local boys going away to the mainland and playing. So when there are local boys on the team that contribute, it makes it a little sweeter.
