SandBows have four pairs in the round of 16. Pair No.6 lost to Grand Canyon No.2 while the other I believe lost to Pepperdine.
USAV says pairs will use wins from this bracket to get points toward qualifying for the AVCA Championships.
All pairs tournaments go towards points, including UH’s pairs tourney last week. Points go for the at-large berths in the AVCA championship pairs event in case your school didn’t make it as a team to the nationals.

Hawaii (Tiegs/Taylor), Pepperdine (Larsen/Woolever) and Grand Canyon (Phelps/Dugan) each received one bye in the first round. Advancing to the round of 16, Hawaii has four teams, Pepperdine five, TCU two, CSUB two and GCU three.
Sunday’s bracket play will go through the round of 16, eight, semifinals and finals, with trophies being awarded to the top two teams.
Only UH team not to make it was at No. 5. Hall used two different pairs in that spot against GCU And TCU
Chow/Boyan lost to Pepperdine’s tough number 3 team, but gave them a battle, taking the first set before losing the next two. IMO Chow/Boyan should be UH”s fifth flight.
UCI is up 2-0 at Pepperdine…
IMO it just may come down to the matches at BYU. UCI plays two in provo the week before UH. Really hope UCI loses, while UH wins both, Want UH to host the MPSF semis.

5. I’m totally with you this time. We both want Pepperdine to win badly. So far each team won two sets and it all comes down to a critical fifth set.

wow…the UCI/Pepperdine match is the most weird match that I have watched in a while. UCI played so dominantly in sets 1 and 2 and ran away at the end of both sets. Then somehow Pepperdine came back in game 3 and then ran away with the fourth. In set 5, Pepp up 5-0 only for UCI to come back and tie and and had few chances at the match, then Pepp came back. It was like watching a lot of different teams playing all in one night. Jekyll and Hyde teams
Hurrah! We got our wish – just barely! Irvine had two match points and there was a reversal on a controversial point which was finally a replay. Next we need BYU to beat Irvine twice in Provo and if Hawaii wins the next six MPSF matches it can clinch the MPSF even before playing BYU. It’s tough to beat BYU at home.
Very weird match. Pepperdine up 5-0, 7-3 and 8-4 in Set 5. Didn’t think they’d pull it out.
Hawaii alone in first by half game.
UH now #1 in the MPSF…Will they also be #1 in the coaches’ poll? Is Penn State getting hot at the right time?
14. don’t think they will jump to 1. but it will be interesting to see how the coaches vote.
Observations from the match.
Sets 1 and 2 – UCI with dominant serving/passing. Pepperdine passing broke down. Waves obviously the better blocking team. Hershko = superman.
Sets 3 – Waves came back from being down to steal and prevent first time being swept all season and stole momentum
Set 4 – UCI forgot how to pass and hitting negative for a long time and looked hungover. Pepperdine just utterly dominant and relentless.
Set 5 – Pepperdine up a lot 5-0 yet UCI came back to tie and serve for match a few times. Pepperdine able to come back and win in OT.
Interesting how Hershko just disappeared in the end sets. Truly scary = UCI setter. His lefty jumper is wicked. Not sure why UCI stopped setting Hershko. Most imposing thing about Waves is their block. Both teams had giant momentum swings and passing meltdowns.
My opinion is the UH bench is deeper than UCI and Waves, but hard to gauge since their coaches didn’t use their bench much even when down a bunch. Just guessed that since UH doesn’t seem to lose much offense when a reserve comes in and they can spark the win. The few subs that came in for the Waves and Anteaters didn’t do as much.
I too don’t think UH will go to #1. There is a high chance we may go to #2. I really have no clue who #1 will be. There is a chance that it will remain Loyola with UH getting a lot more #1 votes though.

My best guess at the top of the coaches poll with the current matches played so far is as follows
1. Loyola (9 votes)
2. UH (7 votes)
3. UCI
4. Pepperdine and Lewis tie
Rationale = Loyola lost to #2 so not as much penalization. Lewis lost to someone out of the top 10 and drops from 2 to 4. Pepperdine rewarded by moving 1 up to #4 and UCI remains the same
I really don’t care about the AVCA rankings at this point. Just care that UH is in first in the league. Awesome, hope they win out and host MPSF quarter and semis. They now control their own destiny, win the regular season and a bid to NCAA final 6 is inevitable.

sigh…pity our B team lost to not even the top NAIA team =( So much for me earlier stating that our bench seems to have a lot of depth and not much drop off from the A team. But yay on our A team winning 25-10

Hope played their best set of the sites in that 2nd set. On the other hand they were also helped by sloppy play by Hawaii’s 2nd string. I was hoping that Wade would start the 2nd string again in the 3rd and 4th. The 2nd string was perfectly capable of winning the match and Hawaii’s 1st string was clearly superior to Hope’s team and shouldn’t have needed to bail out the 2nd string.
Hartley also needs to clean up his serve receive if he wants to keep his starting position.
