Tyler Hadden’s graduation opens the kicking competition this spring.

Kainoa McDonald, a 2014 Punahou graduate, redshirted last last season.

But two familiar kickers — Joe Uglietto and Aaron Novoa — are expected to be in spring training.

Uglietto, who was raised in Massachusetts, was Colgate’s starting kicker in 2011. He then transferred to UH, and redshirted in 2012. In 2013, he was a backup to Hadden, making one road trip. He did not play football last year.

Novoa played at Sacramento City College before transferring to UH. He participated in last year’s spring ball, but was not invited to training camp. He’s back with the Warriors this semester.

UH just could win against Colorado and Wisconsin by a late minute field goal.
As for Ohio State, just crush them. 🙂

    No Ceejay Santos?

  6. Bowwar March 10, 2015 9:56 am

I still don’t understand why they didn’t go out and recruit a new kicker unless McDonald is that good.

  7. st. anthony trojan March 10, 2015 10:14 am

If you older….you may remember Don Leong’s group…. backing Don Ho at Kalia Gardens….now his vibe playing was good vibes….

    #6 Bowwar:

McDonald: “A 2014 graduate of Punahou School in Honolulu, O‘ahu…earned two varsity letters in football…an all-state first-team selection at kicker…nailed 7-of-8 field goals with a long of 47 yards…also a two-time all-league pick…named to the 2013 USA Today Family Insurance All-USA Hawai‘i Football team…part of the 2013 state championship team and two league championship squads…team finished state runner-ups his junior season.”

Met Ceejay’s grandpa playing video poker in Vegas. So proud his grandson was coming home to play for Hawaii. He got me excited when he spoke of him. Sorry things apparently didn’t work out for him and his family.

I wonder if Farrington PK Kekoa Sasaoka will get a look from UH next year.
Chris Sailor says he’s the top kicker in Hawaii and one of the top in the nation.
Kicked a 53 yard FG as a Junior

I’m personally cheering for Alex Trifonovitch, since I know the dad. Come on Alex, be the next Jason Elam!!

  12. cappie the dog March 10, 2015 12:20 pm

For kickers, unlike QBs, I think a platoon system is more workable.

So who has the strongest leg?

Who has the most accurate leg?

Ray Wersching probably wouldn’t have a job in today’s NFL.

I used to like upsets in conference tournaments until the Cal Poly debacle of last season.

To my irritation, the #1-seeded Colorado State Rams got taken out by the #8-seeded San Jose State Spartans. So much for the Wahine’s quality win.

The Kapolei Public Library is freezing. I’m hanging out at Zippy’s until work starts.

    Have a nice day, all.

  13. Kama Krab March 10, 2015 12:33 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

As stated before, if need, Alex could do all the kicking duties himself. If I not mistaken, right now he has atleast range up to 45 yards maybe more, which is a good range for a college kicker. He will probably get better as the years go on with more weight training.

Kainoa has a pretty descent leg himself and probably has an high 40’s range too.

The kickoff’s is what I’m not sure of. Haven’t seen these kids kick the ball off in a while.

  14. rage777 March 10, 2015 12:33 pm

I just realized that Alex was recruited as a punter, not a kicker. Alex, be the next Matt Briar!! 🙂

If in fact it is time to replace the Aloha Stadium, I would suggest building a world class stadium on the Ali Wai golf course property this would include adequate parking but also several walkway bridges across the Ali Wai canal so Waikiki hotel guest can walk across to the stadium for special events or bowl games. My original idea included a stop at the stadium for HART. A new stadium in that location would be perfect venue for many major events and concerts. As many cities have done, sponsorship by a major corporation could cover much of the costs! Although I now live in Colorado, I lived in Honolulu for over 40 years and during that time had season tickets for UH football and as I sat there in Aloha stadium, I realized how far it was from our fans the of a major stadium in Waikiki came to mind for all reasons I have stated above!

  16. Jake March 10, 2015 1:47 pm

Stadium at the Ala Wai ? No thanks. Imagine the traffic before and after the games.

  17. 3-Prong March 10, 2015 2:13 pm

    Hey Roger,
I have been a proponent of the Ala Wai site too. My only reservation is that it is smack dab in the middle of a flood zone. This is not a popular site choice among the Muni Country Club set though.

  18. 3-Prong March 10, 2015 2:23 pm

Got renewal season ticket info in the mail. In order to purchase parking now, you need to be in the group of season ticket holders that pays an additional premium for tickets, that in addition to the fact that my season ticket price went up. …….well, like I’ve always said, Div1 sports costs so I understand. I hope they will also raise student activity fees to also help defray costs.

    Let’s Go Bows!

  19. Ralph March 10, 2015 4:05 pm

3 Prong glad to know that UHAD is already doing FB renewals, they need a short renewal period to give them more time to solicit new season ticket holders.

  20. Fei Jai March 10, 2015 4:14 pm

If Chip gets Mariota, the Eagles will take it all, or they will come pretty darn close to taking it all.

  21. SteveM March 10, 2015 4:17 pm

    RE: #15, 16 & 17

Ala Wai Golf course stadium has the advantage of the Ala Wai Canal. Really. The canal is not just a water barrier, it is a multilane freeway for water traffic–boat shuttles (think Arizona Memorial) and water taxis. The #2 bus route into Waikiki crosses the Ala Wai at the Kalakaua Ave bridge. TheHawaii Convention Center and it’s parking is along the Ala Wai canal there. Ala Moana shopping center (where the rail will currently end) is one block away from the canal across Atkinson street.

Lots of alternative parking and main street routes if the Ala Wai canal is utilized.

The area could never support the traffic increase. Plus imagine the angry senior citizen mobs that golf there everyday

  23. kawika49 March 10, 2015 4:28 pm

I still say, put it in Diamond head; and build tunnels to Kapiolani Park and wider tunnel by Diamond head mortuary.

  24. kawika49 March 10, 2015 4:33 pm

    Harding Avenue could be expanded.

  25. kawika49 March 10, 2015 4:38 pm

Kapiolani Park, Alawai Golf Course with shuttles for Parking and Kapiolani Park for Tailgatin ang Flea Market

  26. NorthShoreFan March 10, 2015 4:42 pm

    Guud evening Tsaikos…bootiful day.

stadium on the slopes of Makakilo, overlooking PH and Diamond head. Right off the freeway, use natural contour of hillside, lots of land area for parking, close to UH West…which they should plan to make into the larger UH campus, student housing, apartments, shopping centers nearby. Educational Tourism…

  27. NorthShoreFan March 10, 2015 4:43 pm

was going to be a golf course at one time I believe.

  28. beans March 10, 2015 4:43 pm

    Kalia Gardens?
Don Ho, Sonny Chillingworth, Randy Ahlo and others……..
Was there one afternoon during a light rain, water flooded the place way past our ankles. Didn’t phase us…..still suck ’em up! Then we went a few doors over to the Palm Tree Inn. suck ’em up some more with the Issac brothers and watched Chick do his hula. Walked home…………..no can drive.
Yeah those were Hapa Hula Days!

  29. Ipu Man March 10, 2015 5:48 pm

Joe Uglietto made the 5pm news but it was not for kicking…
    🙁

  30. 3-Prong March 10, 2015 6:35 pm

20 FJ: with chip getting bradford for fowles, does he still covet Mariota? What kind of contract does bradford come with?

  31. nanakuli March 10, 2015 8:40 pm

Kekoa Sasaoka quit Farrington. He is now a Red Raider enjoying life with winners on the North Shore. Now he can get a real education and go to a big time college. How many talented all state Govs end up in JC’s.

  32. Stephen Tsai March 10, 2015 9:05 pm

Well, that’s just an unfortunate coincidence.

  33. Nanakuli March 10, 2015 9:30 pm

Joe cannot be coach Chow’s kicker, he going choke.

  34. BigWave96744 March 10, 2015 11:21 pm

    What happened to Joe?

    cont.

In regards to the story reported on the 5 pm. news about JU it seems like HawaiiNewsNow/KHNL/KGMB took it down from their web site. I don’t see it.

What was reported was that the PK was accused of domestic abuse. There were no other details. There were no where, what, when, how…other than the fact the reporter mention that the player was a former Warrior on the 2013 roster.

  36. cappie the dog March 11, 2015 4:10 am

Does anybody remember the name of a walk-on kicker who would spell the starter in blowouts during Coach Wagner’s tenure? He was local, undersized, and very quiet. I remember watching Wagner pounding both fists on the young man’s shoulders to pump him up.

  37. Shoko March 11, 2015 7:35 am

Not an Eagles hater but what Chip Kelly has in mind has to fall in one of two categories: complete genius or utter stupidity.

There seems to be a fine line separating both now days.
