BYU coach voted us #2, and UCI #1.
When Loyola plays Lewis tonight, it will be an interesting match. Wonder if it will live up to its billing being the top 2 teams ranked in the nation currently.
How awesome would it be if Scott Hartley had been nominated for and won the MPSF player of the week?! He sparked the four-set victory on Friday and followed that up with an out-of-his-skin game on Sunday.

#4- Geez, it was a simple observation regarding McGowan’s vote. Unusual because he was the only coach to do so and had, up until last week, voted Loyola number one for most of the season. Is there something wrong with pointing that out? Or do we now need detailed explanations for every comment?

#5 I totally get what you’re saying. Sometimes when I read this blog, the moderator allows participants to make digs and sometimes insult the Hawaii program or other team’s and have little to know reaction to them. Cindy’s opinions and comments are inconsistent with the immature comments that appear from time to time. You’re posting about McGown’s vote, it’s a volleyball blog and the thread was on the Men’s Volleyball Poll, so I see the relevance in your share. =)
I think y’all are making mountains out of mole hills. Cindy was just asking a simple question and you guys get bent out of shape. Let’s redirect this thread back toward UH men’s volleyball. Great job to the men’s team this past week. Just keep winning!
nice job by the warriors. 2 gut-check wins over pepperdine this past-week. cracking into the top 4 nationally is pretty awesome. and if they’d started the poll higher at the beginning of the season, maybe they’d even be higher by now.
just to add to things … another interesting thing about mcgown voting for uci and hawaii as #1 and #2 respectively … is that byu has yet to play either team. byu’s series against both are late in the season, with byu’s matches against against hawaii coming in the final weekend. so mcgown voted for 2 teams he hasn’t played yet, above another team (loyola chicago) that byu lost to (albeit in the first match of the season).
still though … the “politics” of voting in these polls is always an interesting dynamic …
I like the way the BYU coach votes. I mean they have a win over Lewis so I like that he doesn’t have them in his top 3, Loyola has only one worthy win , and that was against BYU at the start of the season.
#4 just brought it up as a mere observation as others have stated. It was interesting to see that he thought the MPSF teams are rated higher than the MIVA teams and seems to be one of the few coaches to do that. As others have mentioned, BYU has yet to play either his top 2 votes. I hope we do well against BYU in Provo and live up to his rating against his team. =)

BTW, MPSF POW went to Gabriel Vega of Stanford. Nice to see Franciskovic nominated. UH is leading the country in assists.
Stanford sophomore opposite Gabriel Vega (Kailua, HI/Iolani School) averaged 4.62 kills, 2.25 digs and 4.94 points per set while hitting .375 in two home wins over No. 4 BYU (Mar. 6-7). He posted a career-high and match- best 16 kills on .312 hitting with eight digs in Friday’s win. He followed up on Saturday with another career-high 21 kills with a .425 attack percentage, along with 10 digs, for his first collegiate double-double. Vega added four blocks on night two, including a solo block to seal the third-set comeback. This is Vega’s first career MPSF honor. Hartley’s parents must be happy. The tv telecast showed them in the crowd in previous matches when he started for an injured Zarkovic. Then he went back to the bench for awhile after those matches.
I didn’t get to watch the match. Did they play like the #1 and #2 teams in the nation? How would the top MPSF teams compare against them from what you guys saw. Kinda wonder if they will just swap to have Lewis #1 and the Loyola #2 next week
I asked myself, “Who is Lewis (University)? It turns out Lewis is a private, Roman Catholic (Lasallian) university in Illinois with a student population of around 6800. It has 80 undergraduate programs and 22 graduate programs and is recognized by the Princeton Review as one of the best Midwestern colleges. Lewis athletics plays in the NCAA DII division and supports 18 programs; 9 women’s and 9 men’s programs (no football). It’s men’s volleyball team is taller than their men’s basketball team with 3 players at 6-9, 2 at 6-8, and 4 at 6-7. Most of their athletes are from Illinois.

24. vbfan4life. Keeping in mind that this was the only time that I have seen either team play, these are my impressions from last night’s match: Both are very good at defense and transition. They have a fast (quick middle sets) offense because their passers are so good. Passing seems to me to be their best skill, and not just because the other side was serving floaters half the time. Serving is their weakness due to the jump vs float mix and S/E’s on floaters. In fact, Loyola likely lost that match due to the (at least) three S/E’s at critical junctures in S4. The all-around standout player – or the player whose game I noticed – last night, was Lewis’ Powell. He has major hops, he passes on a dime, and he hits with accuracy. That combination reminds me of recent BYU grad Taylor Sander.
Do I think Loyola and Lewis are appropriately ranked the top two in the country? I believe that they belong in the top four. What they lack in MPSF-like power serving/hitting, they make up for in passing and consistent quickness.
The one aspect which surprised me was the relatively less-successful blocking game because I had read prior to the match that both teams have very tall players. Perhaps this is due to the teams’ offensive speed. So, that’s kind of a scary thought: If you are an (MPSF) opponent without a fast offense, you will have difficulty scoring against their fast and tall front row. I think that UH showed this past weekend what can be achieved against a tall opponent.
So, for UH to be successful against L/L comes down to two things: First, serve hard/varied to get L/L out of system and second, pass and run the transition/offense as well as L/L.
I would love to read your impressions of the match.
25. Lewis has had a very good volleyball program for the past 20 years and history with UH.
They were in the final four with UH in 96. They won the NCAA title the year after the Warriors. Both programs later vacated for NCAA infractions
Thought then-Lewis coach Deuser a nice guy.. Warrior Jorge Alifonso ended up transferring from UH to play at Lewis his last two seasons. Deuser was big on recruiting Puerto Rican players.
Flyers were out here for the Outrigger in 99 and 04, opened the season with UH with two matches here in 2001, 03 and 05, came out late in 2000 and 07 for 2.
Hawaii holds a 13-1 lead in the series.

watched the match yesterday. both loyola and lewis are good teams, no doubt. loyola is the reigning champs. they still have a lot of talent (jaeschke, hutz, caldwell) even with losing some major players from last year’s team. and lewis has experienced players at the pins (powell, petty and fitterer) which can take you a long way.
both teams started off shaky last night. i think both are good serving and serve-receive teams. what will hurt loyola is not having a consistent 3rd pin hitter. jaeschke was money for them last night, but caldwell started to struggle (and was even pulled in the middle of the 4th set).
lewis got a great performance out of petty last night. he’s had great nights during the season, but he’s been probably overshadowed a little by powell and fitterer on offense. loyola might’ve focused their defense more on powell/fitterer, leaving petty to go off for 21 kills.
ohana mentioned the blocking wasn’t really there last night. lewis was missing walsh, their best blocker last night. loyola’s best blocker is olson, but he sat out injured for a little while, and this was his first game back.
but it’s hard to compare these 2 teams to the mpsf just from one match, plus these 2 are clearly the class of the conference and have been steamrolling most of the other teams they’ve faced in-conference. still though, both teams have weapons that would match up well with any of the top mpsf teams.
so vinnie on VT has said the first “RPI” for men’s vball will be out march 23. i put “RPI” in quotes b/c i think it’s been said on VT that the NCAA uses some ‘version’ of the RPI for the men’s game. what that means? i don’t know …
but we’ll get a first glimpse on how the ncaa selection could possibly play out.
(and b/c i know cindy will also say it) … yes, there is still plenty of season left … 😉
Cindy, this is random but any idea why Andrew Breuer left UH to transfer to Pepperdine his senior year?

wawa — as i understand it, breuer completed his undergrad, but still had eligibility left. he transferred to pepperdine for grad studies.
Andre Breuer left Hawaii because he had issues with the coaching staff + he achieved his undergraduates during his junior year. Had one more year of eligibility, so he transferred to Pepperdine.
