Pizza supreme

A key football member is missing from the Warriors’ offseason conditioning program.

Pizza1Stephen Pizza didn’t throw a football or make a tackle during games. But as a graduate assistant strength/conditioning coach, he helped players with weight and fitness training, monitored the “Pit” for those rehabilitating from injuries and, without fanfare, did jobs that needed to be done. During beach workouts, he set up training areas, worked at different stations (including standing in knee-high water) and, after the players left, helped pack the supplies and pick up trash.

As a GA, Pizza earned a tuition waiver and a monthly stipend of about $1,000. The stipend was available only during the fall and spring semesters. He essentially was a “volunteer” during the summer.

Pizza’s two-year GA tenure ended when he earned a master’s degree in December. He moved back to the mainland and now works at a high school and a private training facility.

S/C coordinator Gary Beemer considers Pizza as one of his best friends.

“Everybody likes Stephen Pizza,” Beemer said. “He’s a special cat.”

  17. tom February 28, 2015 10:01 am

kapakahi #13 Numero Uno started in Chicago – the others are franchised.
But Numero Uno at the start was so popular in Chicago, the second one was Numero Due (#tw0).

Not sure but I think Due was eventually just branded as another Uno.

Good pizza though- no matter what it was called.

  18. hitman February 28, 2015 10:06 am

morning everyone !! see there starting interviewing for the next AD !! 70 people to chose from or so?

  19. A-House February 28, 2015 10:15 am

Counselor Tom, Jim Donovan & Ben Jay:

thank you for all your efforts in securing the 2nd single largest donation, other than the Ching Foundation, for UAHD for which ALL teams will be beneficiaries!

anonymous donor, whomever you may be, THANK YOU from the A-House family!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. A-House February 28, 2015 10:16 am

    al:

why should your comment(s) be moderated? you specie tru faxs!!!!!!!!!

  21. islandman February 28, 2015 10:21 am

Mentioned by Na Alii Pride yesterday, interviews for the new AD have begun. List of over 70 has been chopped down to maybe about 14.

  22. A-House February 28, 2015 10:21 am

eyes go to the MCBH fo commiesary run – turn da conna and paking lot empty – drive up to da front doah & note say “base electrical outage – reopen 3/1/15

so eye com hom via Kapaa Quarry Road and see human nature at its worst – 4 junked/stripped cars pushed into the tall grass and one large pile of grey plastic bags dumped less than 1/2 mile from the Quarry collection station

Mr. Tam, teacher @ McKinley HS, was correct when he shouted in class, “human nature sucks!”

  23. A-House February 28, 2015 10:28 am

so, now that coaching staff complete:

can start connecting via email, phone, twitter, face book all prospects here, on the mainland, and down under while setting up offensive, defensive, and special teams schemes or sit and wait until Spring Ball???

IMHO, Far East and Southeast Asia can be a golden pot for other sports such as softball, basketball ( men and women ), golf, volleyball, swimming/diving – get enough “grads” to “spark” potential students and create a marketing web/net working” to get names to UHAD

English should not be a deterrent as USA has a large number of international students from Hawaii to the East Coast including the Ivy League schools.

  24. Maddog50 February 28, 2015 10:43 am

For those complaining about weather there it was –15 here outside of Chicago. Coldest Feb on record. We are thru the bad stuff…..but we got all the good pizza we want. Nรบmero Uno, Malnatti, Home Run Inn……u name it. Rather have warm air any day!!!!!!

  25. Bryson February 28, 2015 11:06 am

Anyone notice in today’s sport section that Kaluka Maiava is listed in the headline as a ex UH Linebacker…lol…That’s gotta piss him off..editor must’ve been a UH graduate…lol

  26. C-Pop February 28, 2015 11:27 am

Frankie,Johnnie, & Luiggies Pizza !! In Mountain View CA! Best Pizza gets my wife & my vote! Frequent visits during our time in Silicon Valley, 7os, 80/81.

  27. WarriorMojo February 28, 2015 11:42 am

    Re #25

Yeah, what’s up with that? But I doubt kaluka is pissed. He’s probably happy to bring more bad pub to UH.

But really, Star Advertiser, can you do a FACT CHECK before printing something?

  28. SteveM February 28, 2015 11:48 am

    Good morning everyone!

    Good luck to Stephen Pizza!

hawaiiathletics posted a story and photo of the $1.2 million donation.
I’m posting this in acknowledgement of the Tsai-ko standing next to Dave Shoji… ๐Ÿ™‚
    http://hawaiiathletics.com/news/2015/2/27/GEN_0227150452.aspx?path=gen

  29. Haleakala February 28, 2015 12:12 pm

Kaluka Maiava probably doesn’t care about the mistake in the story about where he went to college. But UH should care.

  30. islandman February 28, 2015 12:46 pm

    28. SteveM. Who’s the man 2nd from the right in the picture ? How come they don’t say ?

  31. WarriorMojo February 28, 2015 1:09 pm

    Re #30

That’s Mike Baker, the UH Cheerleading Coach. UH Cheer and UH Band are so awesome.

And, Counselor Emeritus Tom, once again a heartfelt thank you to you and your client for the most generous gift(s) to UH athletics.

So MANY lives have been — and will continue to be — impacted by your unprecedented generosity.

  32. islandman February 28, 2015 1:34 pm

Jackson W., on J. Portnoy radio show on Wednesday, mentioned that Jenny Matsuda, former Director of Academics in the athletic department passed away. Jim Gillespie called in too about it and said good things about her.

  33. kev-1 February 28, 2015 1:51 pm

Unless they edited what they posted on the SA, it doesn’t say Maiava went to UH. It says “Former linebacker from Hawaii.” He IS from Maui, HI.

  34. kapakahi February 28, 2015 1:57 pm

    #24,

    Malnatti’s was great……as was Gino’s East and Giordano’s.

Always enjoyed the pizza in Chi-town!

  35. kapakahi February 28, 2015 2:04 pm

    #26.

Might’ve been there at the same time as you…….cuz was always there grinding with my college housemates.

Not only great pizza and pasta……but awesome calzones…….and garlic bread too……with melted mozzarella!

  36. pollypicador February 28, 2015 2:05 pm

Should the SA proof read Associated Press articles for facts?

Yes. I would think so. It’s seems like the article is now updated.

Reardon wrote in his recent blog (2/27)…(in regards to Chow’s coaching tenure)…”after four straight losing season.”

That I think was intentional. Those two have been feuding in the past. So why not be the writer and pile on an extra year.

Regarding S. Pizza is his ethnicity Italian? Seems logical, possible. Why do I ask these questions? For SP he earned his Masters, saw Hawaii, worked at his passion and solidified his bonds with his friend (GB). It doesn’t get any better than that.

Saw the men basketball game against LB. Is Hawaii good or are the opponents bad? The team looks athletic, exciting. But how will the team fare against a taller, physical team.

Regarding Chrome…I will never go back to IE. C is a lot better.

  37. beans February 28, 2015 3:21 pm

I am a little astounded and delighted that some of our teams are doing so well. A couple of months ago it seemed like the mood was ultra gloomy. Someone said then that “the sun would shine again”, and I think I am seeing it. Imua!

  38. tom February 28, 2015 3:22 pm

    A-House #19

Thank you – but the fact is that the donation is the 3rd largest donation. Jim Bolte, may the Eternal Light shine upon him, donated 2.2 million to the AKA. His donation may be first as the Ching Foundation is not a individual – but the importance is that people are willing to look at the long view.

Our football team has beaten Alabama, the Washingtons, the Oregons, the Michigan States, the Purdues etc and we will eventually beat them again.

These are people that look at the long term.

  39. beans February 28, 2015 3:49 pm

It was stated that Jim Bolte was from South of Reno. What is 100 miles south of Reno? Did he have a previous connection to UH? He should be a well known name here for what he contributed but I had never heard of him until now. Maybe I just wasn’t paying attention.

  40. mctruck February 28, 2015 3:56 pm

Cinnamon pizza with light and dark raisins sprinkled with small kind marshmellos and caramel bites. Don’t forget the syrup

  41. tom February 28, 2015 4:23 pm

    #39 Beans

Jim was a long-time insurance agent in Hawaii. He retired to Nevada – cheaper cost of living. Can’t remember off-hand the town that he was living at. His first inclination was UNR but it was pointed out that he made his living in Hawaii, his father had made his money in Hawaii and so it went to UHF ear-marked for AKA.

    Really a nice guy.

  42. bowwar February 28, 2015 4:29 pm

#38: So true…We’ve done it before and beat larger programs. Mahalo Tom for your support of UH athletics. I wish Ellison or Omidyar would donate as well…

  43. A-House February 28, 2015 4:35 pm

tom – your #38 – so true, so true

I re-read my post several time before pushing the submit button

I should have added the word “individual” before contribution

any more in the works? mummmmmms da word!!!

  44. d February 28, 2015 5:05 pm

    MadDog50
So how come Blang wasn’t banging on your hotel room door the night before games looking for pizza and kept hitting me up for Peppinos of Kailua??

  45. tom February 28, 2015 5:09 pm

    DON WEIR: Congrats!

  46. Na Alii Pride February 28, 2015 6:09 pm

Thank you Tom. We should all feel fortunate that you too see the big picture and are part of this blog.

  47. C-Pop February 28, 2015 6:43 pm

Kapakahi – We lived in Santa Clara and took the leisurely stop & go drive down the El Camino Real towards MV, everything they served was utterly delicious, some good grinds memories for sure!

  48. HiloBilly February 28, 2015 7:00 pm

A little off topic, but does anyone know who won the DII boys soccer final today, between Mid-Pac & KS-Hawaii? Mahalo!

  49. C-Pop February 28, 2015 7:24 pm

    MPI 7 KSHawaii 1

  50. papajoe2 February 28, 2015 7:33 pm

    MPI, 6-0.

  51. papajoe2 February 28, 2015 7:34 pm

C=Pop I think you right. I turned station when it was 6-0.

  52. HiloBilly February 28, 2015 7:39 pm

    C-Pop…

OUCH! Well, in this case being #2 in the state is OK, we weren’t expected to be contenders on the Big Island this year, proud of the guys. Ho’omaika’i to the MPI Pueo!

  53. Don Weir February 28, 2015 8:41 pm

    Tom,
Mahalo. It was time to return what I could to UH.
Great running into you at the game.
    Burgers with A-House, et al??

  54. cappie the dog February 28, 2015 9:38 pm

Not all Boston Pizza locations are the same.

The best place to go is the one of Waialae Avenue.

The one in Aiea is almost as good.

No comment on the other locations.

  55. ALLAN February 28, 2015 9:46 pm

HOPEFULLY, THE MONEY DOESN’T GET ABSORBED BY THE WRONG DEPARTMENTS AT U.H.

  56. Inyoface February 28, 2015 10:37 pm

#36 It just feels like 4 years, maybe even 5.

  57. Maddog50 March 1, 2015 2:54 am

Mr. Weir, Their are plenty of places for Pizza all over the world. Everybody has there favorite, however it is historically recognized that there is more than ample offerings in the Chicago area. The only Pizza I had as a student at UH came from Momma Mia’s cuz it was walking distance and Dominic would extend me credit when I was a little “light”. I always paid my tab….never had a bad pie, if it was bad still ate it and never went back but always ate it!!!!

  58. papajoe2 March 1, 2015 7:23 am

I sure coach Stephen has heard it all and probably all his life about his last name. I just wish him the best at whatever endeaver he seeks.

  59. Old School Dave March 1, 2015 8:04 am

Best of luck, Stephen. Thank you for your work with the program.

Chico’s Pizza, where City Mill now stands on Waialae and St. Louis Dr.
