A lot can happen in a month for two long-snappers.
It was in January when Brian Hittner was seeking to transfer and Luke Ingram was looking for a pro-football job.
But Hittner, who is not on scholarship, opted to rejoin the Warriors after a heart-to-heart chat with head coach Norm Chow.
Then two weeks ago, Ingram, who played for UH through 2012, signed a free-agent contract with the Seattle Seahawks.
These days, Ingram shares tips with Hittner — snap chats, so to speak — and they train together at Ching field.
Hittner did not have an errant long snap last season. Ingram was perfect on snaps to the punter during his four-year UH career.

UH defeated Cal State Northridge in volleyball last night. Alex Jones, who was cut by Northridge two years ago and transferred to UH a year ago had a great game!! Good job!!!

BJ might also be dealing with family issues, too. Thought I read his family left for the mainland a while ago. Not eating right and substituting it with increased alcohol consumption can take a toll on the body.

It was reported maybe a month ago that researchers have determined about two-thirds of cancers are due to luck or bad luck. Therefore it would be foolish for most to look for blame if they contract this terrible disease.

A few days ago another poster wrote to the effect (regarding JI’s combine experience)…”it’s better to have tried than not to have tried at all.” This is so true.
I think if a person’s (myself for sure) missed the boat in life there is some bitterness…but to the ones that eagerly jumped onto that boat, labored their earnest to get upstream…and failed at least they have the solace over those (having regrets, bitterness) that didn’t try a all.
I think I read that 10% of cancers are due to some kind of genetic mutation passed on from the parent.
I can think of six relatives that were diagnosed with some form of cancer. Five of them can be considered cancer survivors.

To the troll (not naming names), you are deluded in thinking UH can win every year. 2 MPSF teams (out of 12) make the NCAA “tournament” every year. The MPSF is THE toughest conference in MVB, if not all sports. I like the direction Charlie Wade has the program going. If you’ve noticed, all 3 freshmen are redshirting this year and most of next year’s freshmen will probably redshirt. They are now “stockpiling” talent.
Re: reducing UH’s autonomy. IMHO, NO.
UH wasn’t any better before they were given autonomy in the 1990s than they are now. 95% of D-1 athletic departments are “struggling”. Why can’t people get that?
16. Polly. Bravo to you. Criticism is easy. Jumping into the fray and doing the work is hard whether you are the AD, HC or whatever. When failure is present it needs to be attended to. And our football program has been failing. But I would venture to guess that those who are the loudest critics and most disrespectful have the least experience in engaging the difficult tasks of life.
I will need to do a lot of thinking before I vote on the UH autonomy amendment.
While it’s good to get a lump sum from the Leg, but if the “powers to be” will NOT fund athletics, then what will UH “powers to be” do to insure they are most productive? After all, did not Lassner (sp) testify before the Leg that athletics brings much to UH and the State. Undert he current status, who controls allocation of funds to each department? A person? committee?
If “autonomy” is amended, does this translate to a 100% change where the Leg will create a separate UH journal and allocate $$ as it sees fit to each department and allow the department head to decide who gets what? or, will it allow the Leg to create one or two “line items” for travel subsidies and gender equity and leave the rest as is?
There is existing dissatisfaction within one “college” on how the current “head” is using funds. Other than Shidler College of Business, one does not hear of donations to a specific college – good or bad. From time to time, we hear news of a certain prof who is given a large grant for his/her individual research project.
The article was very general in nature and perhaps purposely to give the Leg lateral movement to support UH state wide.
IMHO, the driving force is Title IX and the Leg hesitates to support it or throw up the hands and say “autonomy” – it’s UH administration’s kuli ana.
One of the main reasons why the UH athletic departmentand and many other programs are losing money is because of Title IX. Save for women’s volleyball, at UH all other women’s programs are not making a profit. But, that’s the law so maybe the federal government should lend a hand to help all women’s programs that are not making money to at least break even.

but, if you are “hand tied”, like what Congress did to the US Postal Service, require it to allocate $5 billion annually to insure that that retirement fund has sufficient funds, and make it lose $$$ year-after-year, then its up to Congress to amend the law passed forcing the Postal Service to make the $5 billion annual contribution – maybe, even drop it down to $ or $2 billion. It is said that the Republican Senators will not allow changing the law they created. How sad!

Since UH got their “autonomy”, hasn’t the amount of money spent on top administrators gone through the roof? The positions of pres. and chancellor (which did not exist before Dobelle) alone used to cost almost $1mil. I think Ige and lots of senators are basically telling UH to clean up their own mess.

I’m so proud that whatever happened to the former players of the University of Hawaii football team!. I really don’t care if they’re don’t make it to the NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE. They gave back to the younger players as a Head Coach or other coaching positions. Or come back and help out at the University of Hawaii football team. Talk to the players and give them revised!.
I became a Belichick hater after he cut Jake Ingram.
Also, he nearly killed Greg Salas’ career by trading for him, then cutting him, then sending him to the practice squad, then cutting him again.
UH is caught in a tug of war between autonomy (Regents) and state control (Gov, Legislators). State wants to squeeze the regents into submission and regain control of UH. I actually would vote for that because the situation that the regents have created is a disaster. Give the power to Ige and lets move on.
I think Iosefa’s agent should be trying to find a team to go to in the CFL.

Joey isn’t going to be NFL but, CFL can give you a pretty good living. I heard KGMB point out Mariota beat Winston badly in the 40. I wish the local media would stop highlighting an absolutely useless measurement for an NFL QB.
Title IX is wonderful in concept, but the Feds should have provided funding to the Universities to allow it to fund “non-revenue” sports.
Somehow, UH needs to review the issue of paying for travel costs for opposing teams. I wonder if we should have stayed with the WAC (where we didn’t have to pay travel subsidies) since we would have been the major player in that conference. Unless the MWC doesn’t want UH for the non-football sports, I think it makes more sense to put all sports in the MWC versus the Big West.

My take, QB forty between Mariota & Winston media & fans having fun even national media covered it, results were as expected going in. Media did point out slow 40 times for NFL great Tom Brady was 5.2 at his combine. 40 time is important if you are a dual threat QB like Mariota, Kaepernick, Newton, & Wilson. Mariota did impress many Pro evaluators with his passing drills also, dropback footwork, accuracy & adjustments to different receivers & routes. I’m personally hoping for Mariota to somehow end up with Chip Kelly at Eagles!!

Short yardage backs are a dime a dozen and not really being utilized in the NFL today. A lot of teams are using an offensive or defensive lineman for that now and as a blocking back for short yardage. Joey only hope to make the NFL would be to be multi-functional player besides just a blocking or short yardage guy. If he can excel in special teams he may make an NFL team.
The 40 time for QBs is not useless, as suggested above. It is an indicator of athleticism, which is a key trait for an NFL QB. However, if you pay attention to the media coverage, Winston outshined Mariota throwing the ball. They did not say that Mariota threw poorly though, rather just that Winston was better. Conversely, they did say that Winston’s 40 was poor.
Either way, they are both phenomenal prospects. I put my money on Mariota learning the NFL game and transitioning to a better QB simply because of his athleticism and intelligence. With that said, Winston will be good sooner than Mariota. Just not as good as he thinks he will be himself.

Joey was regarded by all to be Hawaii’s best football player, however he was not voted the MVP nor the Offensive player of the year. He wasn’t on the field enough.
Joey’s best years are yet to come. He was on the bench for a good part of his junior and senior years.
Foot problems both years costs 7-8 games?……….tough break!
Off field indiscretion costs 3 games………………utter disappointment!

As to MM and Winston, I still think MM has greater upside, and I would be a tad hesitant giving Winston the mantle of being the face of my franchise. It’s not just a nominal cost, but history has shown it can set back a franchise for a decade–example one-the Browns–have made mistake after mistake at drafting a QB in round 1, and suffered dearly.
That said, that Winston can spin the ball, is just a really natural beautiful thrower with really intuitive timing. Caution–those same words were placed on Jeff George.
UH has as LS (Hittner)……and a punter (Trifonovitch)……but what about a PK (to replace to Hadden)?

There are two PKs returning; Ryan Weese, an Oklahoma State transfer that sat last season and there’s Kainoa McDonald, a red-shirt freshman from Punahou. And one more tidbit about Jameis Winston – he had to lose 17 lbs to get ready for the combine. Concern he’s one of those players that will struggle to maintain playing weight in the off season. He admitted as much about how much he enjoys eating.

McDonald was fairly accurate but limited range…….up to 40 yards…….back in HS…….with a kicking tee.
Less than 50 yards range won’t cut it in D1…Weese was better, but also limited range and questionable accuracy.

…we aren’t losing money because of title IX. The cost of doing business in the collegiate arena is tough for the have-nots. The “air bus” is football. We need to see 37,000 to 40,000 paid attendees every game. We need to have any and all revenues derived from our athletic events funneled directly to the university.

McDonald was 7/8 on field goals his senior year. This included a 43 and 47 yard er on a punahou team that was exceptionally efficient on offense. It’s probably why he had so few attempts let alone were they in such a position to attempt any 50 yarders..

I think there’s a pretty considerable percentage of kickers in the FBS who lack the accuracy or leg strength to kick from 50+ yards out. If McDonald’s range tops out at 40, but is accurate, you take that.
I don’t want to name names, but remember out kicker from years lore who had a strong leg, but missed, I believe, 7 PATs?
If McDonald can make all his PATs, you take that.

We’ve watched Iosefa for five years. We know he’s a good football player. He doesn’t have breakaway speed but he’s tough to tackle, and good for 5 yards a pop.
Whether he’s drafted or not, he’ll be in somebody’s camp because he can play.
As for Mariota, if he’s available at 6, the Jets will grab him. Forget that one-year wonder from Philly in a trade. The choice isn’t between Mariota and Winston (who’s pretty darn fast when he’s running with lobsters or crabs), but between Mariota and Geno Smith. Mariota is better than Smith.

Second, if UH had real autonomy, why did Donna Mercado Kim have so many hearings? She could be pissed about Wonder Blunder, but everyone who bought a ticket received a refund. It works both ways. It’s not UH’s money it’s the people’s money. The Legislature on behalf of the people is responsible for how taxpayer monies are spent. Kim while holding hearings was powerless to direct UH administrators to make changes. And BTW, the story about Kim and her son is inaccurate. Kim waited until a week after the Law School letters of acceptance or denial were sent out. Kim inquired why a letter of acceptance or denial was not received by her son not knowing her son never applied to law school. She never asked anyone for favors to get her son into law school.
SAT, Hittner is 6-1. It’s just that Luke Ingram is 6-6. And I too want to thank Hittner for staying a Warrior. That goes for all Warriors!!!

The excuse that she was just a concerned mother is completely lame. Beyond the call being a misuse of power and access it would also have been a violation of confidentiality if Marcie Greenwood shared any information about the son/applicant without consent. Kim should know this. She is a law maker and has a duty to be exemplary in this way. In this instance she failed.

It is entirely appropriate to inquire after the fact. Kim was not calling about the status of her son’s application, she was asking why he had not received a letter of acceptance or denial. Reagan Mauia was a freak of nature. At 300 pounds he could run a 4.8 40. He dropped his weight to 270 and ran in the low 4.7’s, and he dropped further to 260 when he became a starter in the NFL.
Joey’s pluses are his ability to catch the ball and his strength. Guys like Joey will not carry the ball much except on short yardage. If Joey was only a ball carrier he would have a tough time making it, but I think his pass catching skill will help. He is hurt by lack of speed, because he cannot contribute on special teams– a key to making the NFL.
One of the minuses against Joey, besides speed is that the NFL uses the fullback as a lead blocker (look at Robinson of the Seahawks blocking for Marshawn– classic example) and Joey did not do any lead blocking for UH since we used Joey as a running back (it might have boosted his NFL potential if we used him as a lead blocker). If Joey did well in the position drills (the only position drills people see are the QB’s throwing or the receivers catching– so we do not know what the coaches saw), and coaches feel he can block, he might get a shot at free agency.
