Watching combine–will report if any local boys post any times.

  2. Boolakanaka February 21, 2015 7:59 am

    See how humble I am–did not even mention that I’m # 1!

  3. Stephen Tsai February 21, 2015 8:01 am

I went to the combine in 2008. It’s like sumo coverage. It’s really quiet on the field. The rest of us are in the press box, way up high.
I think in sumo, the announcers do voice-overs from a studio.
At the Heisman, the reporters are in a building across the street from the event.

  4. Ipu Man February 21, 2015 8:12 am

    Go Joey Iosefa!
    Just don’t drink and drive.
    🙂

  5. Chee February 21, 2015 8:13 am

    Nice.. Proud of Joey man!

  6. Boolakanaka February 21, 2015 8:14 am

Haven’t been to the combine, although that would be a nice bucket list. I have been to one of the premier athlete performance places in Phoenix, where one of my good friends was both a trainer and nutritionist–and it was incredibly impressive. When I visited, both times, there were more than 2 dozen eventual NFL guys…..it was like costco for quick twitch.

  7. gigi-hawaii February 21, 2015 8:17 am

    That’s great news about Joey.
    Good luck to him.

  8. gigi-hawaii February 21, 2015 8:21 am

I have never been to a football game in the stadium.

But hubby and I attended an exhibition basketball game between the Lakers and Denver at the Stan Sheriff Center. Fun to watch Shaq’s huge shoes move on court.

We also watched the Harlem Globetrotters play at the Blaisdell Arena. They were so entertaining.

  9. Da Punchbol Kid February 21, 2015 8:28 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Morning Ms. Gigi! How are you and the hubby these days?

Howdy Ipu Man and Mr. Tsai! Boolakanaka, I am so humbled by your humility!

    GO JOEY!!!

    wow from yesterday:

please enlighten me on what this blog rules/guidelines you allude to that I am not following!

if the “rules” include no BASHING of University of Hawaii “upper campus and selected lower campus dudes” or being rude to bloggers, then show me where ST or the moderator set those rules in writing

I can accept being rude to others and limit/stop bashing the student athlete, but there will be some who will exercise their 1st amendment right to say what they want anywhere and any time.

I began positing on this blog 2 months after it went on the “air” – how long have you been posting by using different “names”?

no shame, you can post all the different “aliases” you have been using.
wow, what are your comments to those bloggers?

  13. Da Punchbowl Kid February 21, 2015 8:55 am

    Moderated?

  14. amela February 21, 2015 8:57 am

What part of no don’t you understand? Make your own site. Then you can band all the look a likes.

  15. Da Punchbowl Kid February 21, 2015 8:57 am

    Good Morning All!

    Good luck to Joey!

Boola – I am humbled by your humiliation!

  16. amela February 21, 2015 9:00 am

A-House, after you set up your own blog and all your fans finish bashing UH then you guy’s will start bashing each other. That would be funny, I would read that.

AWESOME PERFORMANCE JOEY !!!!! Name from the past. Spoke with former UH QB Jeff Duva yesterday. In town for the weekend w/ his daughter. Reminiscing about that unbelievable 21-5 loss to USC back in ’78. It was 7-5 going into the 4th qtr and USC was forced to keep RB Charles White in the game w/ a bum ankle. Then SC Coach John Robinson told the press he wanted to “rest” his starters in the 2nd half. GO ‘BOWS !!!!!

  24. Stephen Tsai February 21, 2015 9:18 am

Jeff Duva was awesome. He would have been, uh, more awesomer (sp?) if he caught that option pass against USC.

  25. Da Punchbowl Kid February 21, 2015 9:23 am

Did Joey run his 40 yet, Boola? I just tuned in.

I noticed that when I clear my browser history or delete cookies the moderation notice appears on the next post. Firefox has a feature that I believe automatically clears history and cookies every time the browser is closed so the SA website doesn’t recognize you from before. Maybe the “actual” moderator can explain what is flagged for review?

    DPK:
Iosefa is coming up in a few minutes.

  28. Stephen Tsai February 21, 2015 9:27 am

Anything under 5.0 would be good for Iosefa. If he goes under 4.8, then Chad Ikei deserves a raise.

  29. Da Punchbowl Kid February 21, 2015 9:30 am

Looks like they’re going in alpha order…

  30. Boolakanaka February 21, 2015 9:39 am

  32. Stephen Tsai February 21, 2015 9:42 am

Iosefa ran 5.04 on first attempt at 40.

  33. isleboy February 21, 2015 9:43 am

Ikei is fired…..Joey ran a 5.04….slowest time for runnin backs…

  34. Stephen Tsai February 21, 2015 9:43 am

    That’s an unofficial time.

  35. Shoko February 21, 2015 9:43 am

If not mistaken, I think I read Joey posted a 4.6 hand timed in last year’s pro day.

  36. Stephen Tsai February 21, 2015 9:46 am

    Shoko:
Iosefa didn’t participate in pro day last year. Pro day is next month.

  37. Shoko February 21, 2015 9:49 am

Hmm, thought there was a junior pro day.

  38. NorthShoreFan February 21, 2015 9:50 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

  39. NorthShoreFan February 21, 2015 9:51 am

do they measure leg strength?…he may run a 5.0 but if they need 5.0 yards to bring him down then…random thoughts

  40. Shoko February 21, 2015 9:52 am

Not sure if this is accurate but if he did run those times he is a lot slower this year.
    Low: 4.56
    High: 4.78

  42. jeezy33 February 21, 2015 10:01 am

    40. Doubt those are accurate with electronic times… discrepancy is too big.
Rbs should be timed in 20 yard dash anyway

  43. A-House February 21, 2015 10:02 am

    ST:

#22: not to my knowledge – being “basing” upper and lower campus” many times since the “moderator” appeared when you moved to this site – acting chancellor and resigned BJ and squiring Herman have been constant targets

I don’t bash or say “naughty” things about fellow bloggers, well ones like wow or amela, are special as they try to control what I say and that I should create my own blog, or athletes by name – I did say toward the end of football season that #1 let too many WRs run past him for TDs – if my count is correct, he accounted for 7 or 8 of the 10 long TD passes

wow and amela – go create your own blog and let me know when ready so I can post and “bash” you – singular because you are the same person!!!!!!!

  44. A-House February 21, 2015 10:03 am

    basing = bashing in #43

  45. Old School Dave February 21, 2015 10:03 am

Hopefully, Joey can impress the scouts in the other skills.

I wonder what Reagan Mauia’s 40 time was when he played for UH? Reagan, was about 20 pounds heavier than Joey, I believe, but played 2-3 years in the NFL.

  46. Stephen Tsai February 21, 2015 10:08 am

Iosefa runs 5.02 on second attempt.

  47. Warrior Dave February 21, 2015 10:14 am

    Mr. A-House,

Don’t let posters, especially ones using multiple names get you riled up. They are just a bunch of scared and insecure people with no friends. Yes I remember you from the early days and I respect your opinions and I look forward to reading what you have to say

  48. Boolakanaka February 21, 2015 10:33 am

Joey moving pretty well on the drill work….

  49. A-House February 21, 2015 10:43 am

what difference does 5.2 seconds make versus 4.8 seconds – its only .4 seconds – not so fast as a blink of the eye – would it make such a big difference for a DB trying to catch a RB or WR?

a DB deciding to tackle a RB/WR takes longer than .4 seconds for that decision to make his muscles react

there are certain RB/WR who as not super fast { 4.2 – 4.3 }, maybe in the 4.6 range who are elusive with quick feet like a Jerry Rice

I was once a participant of a “reaction” test at Fort Devens, MA – all part of a safety class – you drive a car with a timer to determine your reaction time from the pistol sound to hitting the brake – normal time was 1.25 seconds – when I hit the brake, the cop almost went through the windshield – he said my time was .45 seconds – of course I cheated cause I had positioned my left foot about 1″ from the brake pedal

DBs always cheat using their most special skill to help them make tackles – those faster, latterly, to their right will take a few more steps to his left or vice versa – same principle applies to moving forward or backward

thus, speed may be a special characteristic scout/coaches look for, how valid is this in a player who runs 4.3 or 4.6 or 4.8 or 5.0 difference is .7 from low to high – win if you can, lose if you must, but always cheat!!!!!!

  50. nutmegger February 21, 2015 10:43 am

Joey can carry 4 guys and still make a 5.0 40 at the same time.

  51. nutmegger February 21, 2015 10:45 am

Maybe that should be one of the measurements, how many guys can you carry on your back and still run 20 yards…

  52. SteveM February 21, 2015 10:51 am

    Good morning everyone!

Joey Iosefa ran a 5.02 forty?
That’s pretty good for a guy usually needing 3 tacklers to bring him down…

  53. Boolakanaka February 21, 2015 10:55 am

A house 5.2 and 4.8 are quite measurable. Just as the difference is between a 4.3 and a 4.8. The NFL channel this morning transposed two runners with the .4 difference, and in slow motion, it comes out to a 5-6 yard difference at top speed.

So, not so much between the tackles, but out in open space, especially at DB and WR these are fairly profound differences. Like most things in sports, it’s more crucial how fast you get to your top speed and how fluid you are with said speed.

  54. Tempmanoa February 21, 2015 10:56 am

Nate was about Joey’s weight at the combine and ran a 4.77, and he had great times in the shuttles and the quickness and agility. He was drafted in the 7th round.

Reagan Mauia was a freak of nature– at 300 pounds he ran a 4.8– see if there are any other 300lb guys at the combine this year running a 4.8. Saw him at practice and he was very quick and agile.

  55. Boolakanaka February 21, 2015 10:56 am

    Joey looking fluid…

  56. Boolakanaka February 21, 2015 11:03 am

Marshall Faulk just gave Joey a real nice big up –“the big guy from Hawai’i has real soft hands”.

  57. NorthShoreFan February 21, 2015 11:32 am

–“the big guy from Hawai’i has real soft hands”….and after you tackle him, you’ll need Dr. Arakaki to get your “swag” back….lol

  58. bowwar February 21, 2015 11:38 am

I liked Joey, but was always concerned about his “fumbles”…I hope he learns to run lower and less upright.

  59. Inyoface February 21, 2015 11:48 am

Iosefa will probably be converted to a full back most likey.

  60. st. anthony trojan February 21, 2015 12:19 pm

kanaka…..good one … nice endorsement…hope ‘soft hands’ lead to a ‘soft wallet…so can put plenty kala inside when he signs hopefully a nice contract with sumone…

  61. el burro sabio February 21, 2015 12:20 pm

They should put all the players in full pads and then measure their times.

  62. al February 21, 2015 12:37 pm

Name five teams that use a fullback…

  63. st. anthony trojan February 21, 2015 12:46 pm

Sabio…me wonder how things would change (times…agility..etc…) if ur suggestion was used…they play in full pads…seems so logical…that they should do that..

  64. jm2375 February 21, 2015 12:49 pm

    Howzit!

    Best wishes to Mr. Iosefa.

Ugly win by the Warriors last night, but a win is a win, esp in the MPSF.
Mahalo to the Wahine bb team for their enthusiastic support of the team last night.
Come down to watch the Warriors shut the Matadors up tomorrow (no tv coverage).

  65. cappie the dog February 21, 2015 12:55 pm

    It runs in the family.

    I don’t mean this to be mean-spirited.

Kolten Wong, as you know, got picked off at first in the World Series two seasons ago.

In last night’s game against Texas El-Paso, Lindsey Willmon hits the ball to left field, Kiana Wong, Kolten’s sister, forgets to tag up. Our small group of four, shouted, “Tag up,” and it’s debatable if she heard us, but she did return to third and beat the throw to home to tie up the game at 2-2. Most likely, it was Coolen, but we were there to support the softball team; we were intense, and desperately wanted the team to pull off the comeback.

  66. Andrew February 21, 2015 1:06 pm

    64.

Yeah I thought it was awesome how in Cali too the Men’s VB team went to support the Wahine Bball team when they were on the road. Coach Beeman had a video of that on her page

Stephen, looks like Ikei should be fired not given a raise. After looking at his Instagram, it looks like they should’ve spent more time on Joey improving his 40 an less time on the half-rep bench presses and poorly coached squats and cleans.
    Ikei is a joke.

  69. st. anthony trojan February 21, 2015 1:53 pm

Me thinks was better 4 joey to loose maybe 10 or 15 pounds more n hopefully have a faster time… to make a good show..then they can always ask him to add sum weight…not know if sum reps would be lost also… cuz he lost sum weight..

I’m thinking if TJ has good numbers at UH’s pro day he is one player that has a legit shot at the next level. Does anyone recall how well this player plays pass defense? That is one of the qualities the NFL is looking for.

Graham? I think he should give it a try. I’ve said it before this player was undercoached. Someone needed to work on his mindset. Player does have a good arm. That’s a quality the next level is looking for.

I have my doubts about the other Warrior hopefuls.

Even JI I wishing him the best but I have doubts. Just being honest.

  72. Old Diver February 21, 2015 3:12 pm

    68

Joey was slower during the season. Using your reasoning the UH coaching staff should be fired.

  73. beans February 21, 2015 4:49 pm

For sure it’s a long shot for all the ex Warriors committed to Pro day to latch on. However I commend those who have chosen to give it a try and as we speak are working their butts off everyday to be at their best. “Better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all.” At least they will have given it their best. and…………..who knows?
If our coaching was that bad, maybe a star will shine through.Go for it!

  74. el burro sabio February 21, 2015 5:30 pm

    Cappie the Dog,

    Totally not cool.

  75. bouncingball February 21, 2015 5:43 pm

Isn’t over 5 sec. super slow? Doesn’t almost every pro, including lineman, have times better than that?

  76. kapakahi February 21, 2015 5:44 pm

The NFL Combine commentator and Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk……was impressed with Joey’s “soft hands” during the pass-catching drills…….and his “quick feet for a big man” when running the cone drills.

Joey looked very smooth and fluid……better than the other bigger RBs……in the RB drills.

  77. kapakahi February 21, 2015 5:47 pm

    #75,

That’s about the same as what the other big RBs and FBs ran too……

Also what Jameis Winston ran too…..

  78. hitman February 21, 2015 5:50 pm

saw this this today made me think about UH BJ and why he can see !! lol
    http://9gag.com/gag/aVO2E9v?ref=fbp

  79. Da Punchbowl Kid February 21, 2015 5:53 pm

Bring Joey into camp, let him catch, block and run the ball. Give him some decent playing time in the preseason, and somebody will want him.

  80. kapakahi February 21, 2015 5:55 pm

    #69,

Could see Joey down about 5 or so more lbs……but definitely not 10-to-15 pounds…….since he still looked in tip-top rock solid shape today.

The plan must be for Joey to lose the 5 or so more lbs for UH’s Pro Day…….to hopefully run a better 40 time…..but stand on his combine lifting numbers.

  81. bouncingball February 21, 2015 5:59 pm

#77, can you point out any other skill position players clocking over 5 sec?

  82. kapakahi February 21, 2015 6:00 pm

Joey seemed to be only hybrid RB/FB combine participant……since mostly pure RB participants……..and about 2-to-3 pure FBs.

  83. bouncingball February 21, 2015 6:20 pm

Going as far back to 2010 combines, there seem to have been only 2 or 3 backs (total of rb and fb) slower than 5 seconds. Chances of Joey getting drafted is slim to none.

  84. beans February 21, 2015 7:41 pm

If I remember correctly Joey has a quick giddyup! He has a bursts to the line that could be a lot more important than running the 40. As a FB I think he can qualify.
    Hope he get’s a chance.
In response to someone in yesterday’s blog. I got a DUI 30 years ago. None since.
Some people learn from their mistakes. I think that Joey will be one.

  85. justsomeguy February 21, 2015 7:49 pm

Much like Jeezy33, I spend an incredible amount of time evaluating players. High school, college, and pro. I’d humbly like to weigh in on Mr. Mariota.

First I’d like to point out the Mariota ran a 4.11s 20 yard short shuttle, which is at the top tier for running QBs. The tests main correlation is his at-speed cutting ability, hip strength and acceleration. This test is generally a better predictor of maneuverability aka “pocket mobility” and a more reliable assessment of escapability than a 40 yard dash.

Alex Smith and Matt Scott are the only quarterbacks in the last ten years (at the combine) to run under 4s. (3.97 and 3.99 respectively).
People may not realize just who Marcus has bested in this drill:
Kenyon Barner 4.2 / LaMichael James 4.12 / Demarco Murray 4.18 / Shane Vereen 4.28 / Adrian Peterson 4.4 / Julio Jones 4.25 among many other players considered to have elite athleticism.

To do this at his size, 6’4″ 222lbs, is remarkable. This elusiveness will undoubtedly help him make up for what he lacks early in his career. I don’t have any doubts about him handling an under-center offense, his footwork is excellent and he’ll pick that up fast, if he hasn’t already. His arm strength is B+, sufficient to make all necessary NFL throws. I would like to see more velocity on the signature “20 and out” route, but there are several current NFL QBs who can’t make that throw regularly, so I wouldn’t stress too much. His skill passing on the move is the best I’ve ever seen in a college quarterback (To be fair, I AM just some guy). His decision making skills are fantastic, which is generally a sign of great preparation, another factor speaking to his work ethic and maturity.

On game film he lacks patience often, which will likely be the first thing the NFL QB coach will try to squash out of him. I rarely see him reach past his second read, but that could come down to Oregon’s offense, and a lack of really needing to. He takes chances down-field A LOT, which when every player in every NFL defensive backfield runs a sub 4.5 forty, is risky business. He’ll be reigned in by his position coach and coordinator. Marcus is humble, focused and by all accounts an incredibly hard worker. These personal traits lead me to believe he will outwork colleague Winston, who at the moment is a better NFL prospect, to eventually become a better NFL player.

If I were an NFL GM, drafting Mariota in the top 10 is certainly NOT a sure thing, but I would sell him as a risk worth taking to my owner and coach. Personally, I hope he slips out of the top ten, gets to a team with a solid line. Give him just one year to learn, and I’d bet the house he delivers when it’s time.

Sorry for the novel guys. Aloha.

  86. beans February 21, 2015 8:06 pm

Just wondering……………….If you best player just made 2 of 2 free throws to put you up 5 and the other team comes back with A 3 point play to bring in back to a 2 point game and knowing that they are going to foul the 1st player on the inbound, why would you have that player throwing it in? Shouldn’t she be receiving it?
Didn’t make sense to me and could have cost the game.

beans. Been to all the Wahine home games for the last three years. UC Davis was applying a lot of pressure on the inbound play. Beeman used her best passer and decision maker to inbounds. It was the right move.

Really curious to see the big boy of Udub–Danny Shelton, and what his 40 and other speed tests look like today….

  93. Boolakanaka February 22, 2015 6:09 am

As for Joey, my personal view, is his target weight should be 239-240—it shows teams discipline and might bring down his 40 closer to 4.8.

As to the 40– I am not sure whether most folks know this, once they make the show, they never and I mean never run or get timed for the 40. Only guys that might run it are folks like Darrell Green and Chris Johnson for bragging rights.

This Vic Beasley kid is a measurable beast–tops at 245 pounds, ran in the low 4.5s, and yanked 225, 35 times…..that is a bunch of quick twitch.

    Great Morning All!

    GO WARRIORS!

    GO WAHINE!

The big sole Danny Shelton just ran a 5.6, that said, he is still a much coveted DL player for the draft.

    Shelton is a special NT/NG

No need run…put him wea DEY like run!

I disagree, but glad that they won. Looks like they are in position for the conference championship. All right!

Danny Shelton to me is the Jerry Rice of dlineman. So, while not the fastest timed, their actual football speed is profound. By way of example, several times this season, I saw Danny chase down screens from behind–he is plenty fast enough to play the middle.

What’s with all the Oscar Night Prognostications (ooooh, big word, I sound like boo now…hehe) on ESPN? I guess its the “E” as in Entertainment part of ESPN, like when they show eating contests and spelling bee winners. Guess that’s what happen when football season ends.

UW’s Danny Shelton’s job is to destroy centers and offensive guards. He’s getting a lot of props from the broadcast crew. USC’s Leonard Williams looks like a specimen and guy with “a lot of upside,” as Mel Kipper would say.

  105. hatakeman February 22, 2015 8:29 am

Toby Gerhart, RB, Stanford, 6-0, 231 was drafted as the 51st player (2nd round) by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2010 NFL draft. His 40 time was 4.53 in the combine. Joey’s time is way off the mark. My guess is he will go undrafted, but get a free agent offer.

All those criticizing Ikei over Iosefa’s 40 time need to realize that if it were not for Ikei, Joey would probably be pushing 260-280. He needs to work extra hard just to keep his weight down. You watch, he will pull a Nate Ilaoa. As soon as he is done with football, he will look like a puffer fish.
