Nice to see the Men’s VB team out at UC Riverside cheering Wahine Basketball on to victory last night.

Coach Beeman said the Wahine BB team will be at Cal Baptist tonight to reciprocate. Good on all of them cheering on Hawaii!!

Mahalo for the report, 1. Aloha73g! Great to hear!

I hope that both UH teams are respectful of the other teams’ home court. The UCLA wvb team “cheering” for the mvb when they hosted Stanford (if I remember correctly) last month was quite short of respectful.

  3. mei mei February 13, 2015 11:25 am

Cindy, i heard through the news that mens v-ball may be an option for one of the sports teams UH may get rid of… is there a petition of some sort to go against that? or any thing else people can voice their opinion to oppose it?

  4. Don February 13, 2015 12:30 pm

The best way to prevent Men’s Volleyball from going away (as a fan), is to get more people to come to the matches. If we fill the lower bowl, then we’ll get them to open the upper bowl for more fans.

  5. Big Island VB fan February 13, 2015 2:03 pm

Don, good point. However, I live too far away to watch men’s volleyball. At best I can attend in person the last weekend which is senior’s night. Also, I deeply regret that I can’t watch online since OC sports demand cable subscription which is impossible in my area. Too bad that Ben Jay renewed the contract with OC sports instead of opening it up to bidding process. K5 offered a better deal. Glad that Ben Jay is gone because of this and I hope that the next AD will be more open to the bidding process.

  6. warriorfan February 13, 2015 3:08 pm

I just have to say Im so glad Ben Jay has been fired. Don’t see UH ever dropping mens volleyball, ever. It’s the only mens sport that can ever realistically win a national title!

  7. Cindy Luis February 13, 2015 5:05 pm

    1. Yes, that’s what I wrote in today’s wahine basketball story. She said they were better than the UCR cheerleaders and you could see them on the video (poorly).
Wahine basketball changed their practice today so they could go back to Cal Baptist and cheer the men on.

    2. curious if you were at the UCLA-Stanford game. I’m not big on posts that use second-hand info. Now if you want disrespectful, try the UCI students at the UCI-UH Wahine game last fall.

    3. Can’t imagine them dropping men’s volleyball.
one of the few sports with the potential to make money.

    5. You can always donate online to the men’s program.

  8. AdmrVT February 13, 2015 5:07 pm

#6. UH won’t just drop men’s VB. Not enough of an impact. Only 4.5 scholarships.

I am afraid at some point it is going to be all sports, if any. With Gov. One pointing to “autonomy” & telling the BOR it is up to them to budget & allocate from the general funds that they do get, I fear the demise of all collegiate sports in Hawaii is drawing near. First BYUH, then UHM & UH-Hilo (highly doubt Hilo will survive), then Chamubade & HOU will be the last bastions.

All our local HS kids will need to migrate. Sad.

Guess the construction in Kakaako will have to carry our fragile economy. Rail won’t, but it will continue to hit us taxpayers if the Leg. & City have their way & extend the GET funding source.

UHM & the UH system unfortunately has gotten too big, trying to serve all segments of the collegiate body. 200 degree programs in 19 colleges & schools. And, as noted by the House Bill that was introduced, several have only awarded 10 degrees in the last 10 years. Obviously, they aren’t self-Sufficient either. The UH cannot contine to be all things to all people. It needs more focus.

  9. Cindy Luis February 13, 2015 5:09 pm

anyway, match just started. I’ll try to do updates. wind keeps knocking the power out in Kailu so it may be sporadic.

  10. 'ohanaInBellingham February 13, 2015 5:11 pm

    7. I watched it on the Pac-12 network. The wvb players were laughing, talking, hollering for most of the match.

  11. 'ohanaInBellingham February 13, 2015 5:28 pm

UH at set point, leading by one. TO by CBU.

  12. 'ohanaInBellingham February 13, 2015 5:30 pm

UH at second set point, leading by one again.

  13. warriorfan February 13, 2015 5:30 pm

I guess no sound today on the stream , or is it just me?
UH barely squeaked out set 1 on Averill set.

  14. 'ohanaInBellingham February 13, 2015 5:30 pm

    UH takes S1, 26-24. Whew!

  15. Cindy Luis February 13, 2015 5:33 pm

    10. thank you for letting me know. just asking.
So they were being college students.

  16. Cindy Luis February 13, 2015 5:37 pm

    8. you cannot compare the UH situation with that of BYUH’s. BYUH’s was an LDS decision to model BYUH after BYU-Idaho. which is all IMs. Formerly Ricks College. Financially BYUH was fine.

  17. 'ohanaInBellingham February 13, 2015 5:37 pm

Stream has no audio for me. 4-3 CBU.

  18. Cindy Luis February 13, 2015 5:39 pm

    8. Chaminade and HPU are both private so they are not impacted by state funding. don’t agree with your vision of total demise.

  19. Cindy Luis February 13, 2015 5:41 pm

    8. it may be just 4.5 scholarships but it costs money to travel.

  20. 'ohanaInBellingham February 13, 2015 5:41 pm

    15. lol

  21. 'ohanaInBellingham February 13, 2015 5:41 pm

10-9 First lead for UH in S2.

  22. Cindy Luis February 13, 2015 5:54 pm

  26. Cindy Luis February 13, 2015 6:15 pm

UH up 10-6 in Set 3

  27. warriorfan February 13, 2015 6:16 pm

I am loving the way Hartley is playing , Sedore and Fey kind of struggling.
Jennings is my favorite player because of how much he has improved from the start of the season, .A few weeks ago on the last road trip Jennings’ serve was extremely weak now he’s one of the best servers on the team, very impressive.

  28. Cindy Luis February 13, 2015 6:17 pm

and if you want ugly. UCI up 2-0 on Stanford and 21-9 in Set 3.

  29. Cindy Luis February 13, 2015 6:32 pm

  34. Big Island VB fan February 13, 2015 7:20 pm

    7. Donating to the men’s volleyball team wouldn’t help me to watch them online. That’s my pet peeve.

  35. rayson February 13, 2015 8:02 pm

Great road wins. Next week versus Pepp is the next big test. Hopefully, Siki has recovered. I’d love to see this team at full strength take down the Waves in both matches.

  36. 'ohanaInBellingham February 13, 2015 8:04 pm

    34. Big Island VB fan. The games at the Sheriff are uploaded to YouTube.

  37. Cindy Luis February 13, 2015 8:32 pm

    34. sorry, thought you were asking about how to support the program if you couldn’t make it.

  40. rayson February 13, 2015 10:42 pm

    38. Sorry my mistake. I messed up entering my events into my calendar.

  41. Big Island VB fan February 13, 2015 11:50 pm

    34. Sorry I misunderstood your reasoning. I was simply mad that I couldn’t watch UH men’s volleyball at all.

    36. Thank you for letting me know that I can watch old matches on YouTube. That’s nice. Still, I wish I could have watched them live when I don’t know in advance the score. I may watch a replay match or two on YouTube when I have time, especially the upset wins.

  42. blancachica February 14, 2015 8:47 am

Does anyone ever ask why that half Pilipino guy doesn’t play?

  43. warriorfan February 14, 2015 1:11 pm

I’d save Siki against Northridge, I think UH can win both against the Matadors with Fey and Hartley.

I would Play Siki against Long Beach so that he’s not rusty and ready to go when Pepperdine comes to the SSC. if Hartley keeps playing well I would start him at OH2.

  44. warriorfan February 14, 2015 1:12 pm

    42. probably because Kanetake is playing at a really high level. I was disappointed he didnt play the first two matches against Irvine though when Kanetake really struggled.

  45. Cindy Luis February 14, 2015 4:04 pm

    42. if you’re referring to Komisarek it’s because Kanetake is playing well. They have used the 2-libero thing a couple of times. He’s played in 7 sets, 5 matches.
