We know what’s happening.
UH’s athletic department needs money — not for football, the only sport that is profitable, but to sustain the other sports. And because UH isn’t in any billionaire’s will, the money will have to come from the Legislature and Upper Campus.
In a report to lawmakers on Tuesday and an address to the Board of Regents today, UH’s message is: We need money.
That’s a good thing to admit. It’s hard to ask for help without showing need. So UH opens the books while showing how athletics are good for the school, good for the state.
The problem is in trying to offer solutions, such as cutting sports. That’s because those aren’t real solutions, they’re scare tactics. If UH offers to cut the number of associate ADs from three to one, have one administrative assistant instead of several for the entire department, and replace custodians with a custodial service, those are cost-cutting measures that Upper Campus/Legislature might say, “Hmmm. That would work.”
But the intent isn’t for people to lose jobs or cut sports. The goal is to get more money from Upper Campus and the Legislature. The problem with the strategy is the assumption the BOR and lawmakers are smart enough to figure out the strategy. But suppose they don’t get it? It might be like the person who keeps threatening, “I’m leaving you,” only this time the partner says, “Fine. Keep going.” There is a limit to how often the cutting-sports card may be played. That threat already is hurting UH in fund-raising and recruiting.
Ben Jay, who looks like he hasn’t slept a full night in two years, should be afforded some sympathy. Part of his exit includes crafting and delivering public state-of-the-department reports to the powers; a sight similar to an allocution in open court.
The next time UH has to go through this, it should offer this solution: Start a Ponzi scheme. It’s as workable as any other money-raising/cost-cutting suggestion.

It’s up to us and hoping that some billionaire is going to bail us out is just wishful thinking.
That is why I get so irritated when bloggers come out with remarks like “I’m supporting the team but not giving a cent to the program unless they get rid of Custodian B”.
Yup, sounds like stuff at the square house huh tom?
I hope one day we can have a lottery for education. At least the money the locals will use to pay for it stays local. I remember when Times supermarket had a lottery type game and you could win groceries, trips, even a car I think? Geez was that even legal back then?
Contributing to UH now has a “master” policy in the “new” AKA push to get any one to donate, as low as $1, to any team/sport you want.
We began this idea 2 years ago by donating to 10 different “non-revenue” sports at UH. No strings attached. Would be nice to get a “personalized”, handwritten thank you card from each coach; not like the “pre-printed” ones from the Chancellor’s office.
BTW for you “gaming” fans – Vegas has Nebraska to win the national championship in 2015.
Football is profitable but it’s revenues are down $3 to $4 million a year during the past three years. There is no way for upper campus to cover that loss in yearly revenue.
Ponzi scheme….give us a break. How about some real solutions.

After all, I do send checks to the Red Cross, IHS, and Hawaii Symphony. All important to many who live in Hawaii.
I want to know why the state does not provide any monies towards the operation of the UH Athletic Department. If they are, tell me how much and where I cam find the supporting documents to substantiate the allocated and budgeted funds. For now, I believe no dollars are budgeted. And why is it that only UH Athletics must survive solely on funds that it generates?
Another analogy is the bank robber who holds the gun to his head and tells the bank manager to give him the money or he will shoot himself in the head.

There was talk about changing the autonomy law to allow the legislature to earmark money but it was opposed by the UH administration.
Sorry ST I was too young to remember the TV bingo but I do remember my mom with drawers filled with these orange stamps some were stuck on these huge cards. Must have been tough being a cashier back then. Must have been even tougher being the customer behind Aunty Tutu with her 1000s of stamps.
The past three years, UH’s expenses should have been stable. Travel subsidies have been in place for a while. But yet, expenses keep rising. I think that’s what happens when somebody has trouble saying “no.” You can either be the boss or a friend, but you can’t be both.
The UH Shidler College of Business just completed a report that stated UH Athletics contributes to many jobs in the community,brings in millions of Tourist dollars.
The bottome line is, the report also states that UH Athletics generates $7 Million Dollars a year in Tax Revenue alone.
That should be the answer right there.
The legislature should fund(reimburse) UH Athletics the $7 Million Dollars per year that it generates in Tax Revenue.
It is not a handout.
It is money that UH Athletics generated in Tax Revenue.
That should be enough to keep all current sports running, fund the travel expenses, and keep the UH Athletics in the Black each year.

People want to INCREASE the red tape in the athletic department.
They want you to believe that they have the formula for putting together a successful sports board (that formula: 3/7 members from another Board, 2/7 political appointees, 1/7 financial manager, and 1 guy with an actual sports background). They want to make this formula a law, instead of you know, getting the best possible guys. Which is what a real company would do, instead of trying to keep to some strange formula.
Whether to subsidize the athletic department has become a political battle between the legislature and the UH. Chancellor Bley-Vroman has stated that UH will not subsidize the athletic department and Apple (after forgiving a $17 M. “debt” from past subsidies) gave the athletic department 3 years to become self-sufficient. Part of this is because the legislature has been squeezing the UH budget– making cuts– while UH expenses like those for the Cancer Center keep rising. The legislature wants more budget detail from the UH (who say they are not required to provide it) and would like more control. So UH says to make ends meet they are leaving the athletic department on its own to fund itself and if the State wants to subsidize it, then the State should appropriate money for it and not expect the UH to spend from its academic budget.
You can raise the sales tax to 5% from 4.70% or you can, as somebody mentioned, create a state lottery. Net Proceeds can be earmarked for the UH athletic department, the UH general fund, and to the Hawaii State public schools, and even some other good causes. When so many people travel to other places, especially Las Vegas and Reno spending hundreds of millions if not billions annually to other economies, a few cents or dollars at home per person is a drop in the bucket. It’s not difficult. If the idea is for good cause such as education just make it happen. Come on Legislature, come on Gov. Ige, come on Lt. Gov. Tsutsui.
As mentioned previously, the requirements of title IX and the attendant financial computations do no make eliminating football an option. In sum, you would cannibalize almost half of the remaining sports teams. My suggestion is that the State follow the lead of several other states, that provide specific financial support to meet the requirements of title IX. By way of example, one of the most comprehensive state laws regarding Title IX compliance was enacted by the State of Washington. Under state law, institutions can grant tuition waivers amounting to up to a specified percent of total operating income. One percent of those tuition waivers can be dedicated to gender equity initiatives in the athletic department. The specified percentage for University of Washington is 21 percent. Based on fiscal year operating revenue of $3.39 billion, the university could provide discounts and waivers of up to $711.9 million, $7.1 million of which could be for athletics. The total amount provided for athletics in fiscal year 2011 was $2.5 million. Many other states have similar laws. In Illinois, state law allows for up to 1 percent of total tuition revenue at a public university to be used to support tuition waivers for female student-athletes. In Louisiana, state law allows for 50 tuition waivers per year for female student-athletes at public universities.Long story short, there are solutions….

New AD needs to come up w/ new revenue streams as solutions. Perhaps champion for a piece of the Hotel Room Tax bucket, turn over monies withheld from use of Aloha Stadium, sponsor tour packages from Asia & include UH games, develop piggyback Asian concerts w/ UH athletic games, etc.
Remember how much $$$ brought in when Asian band had concert at Ko Olina? Why not have that kind of concert at the stadium after UH game w/ UH putting the thing together & rake in some of the $$$.
#25. Or at least 1/2 of the $7M to start — so the State keeps 1/2 share. But it goes to UH (BOR and Upper Campus) without earmarking because of “autonomy.” That’s okay. Just have UH provide a report the next session on how it funded UH athletics.

Rather than pray for a billionaire to save us or rely on the legislature, think out of the box & actively finds ways to bring monies in. Anything goes & every bit helps.

That has always been the problem with UH and the State. Rob Peter to pay Paul. They siphoned off money from the ERS (which now has a large unfunded debt), the Stadium uses UH to fill their pockets, they raid the Hurricane Fund, and the list goes on.

Back when Boola had another job, I stop doing much of my work with the university as they were so utterly insistent on taking a portion of the dollars, that I was trying to get to a specific department. We all know that folks need to pay administrative fees, for even simple financial pass-throughs–but there were consistently taking 20%+—-So, while Caesar needs to get paid, neutering business for the future is never a good idea.
Make coaches and administrators sell Amway products….joke.

Upper campus negotiated the travel subsidies, so they should assist in its funding.
Title IX is federal law, so the legislature should assist in its funding.
Many great ideas on how to raise funds and revenue for the UH AD. Problem is that there is “No Can” attitude with those in power at the State Capital and Upper Campus.
Cancel Ohio st football game.
Hire AD with football background.
Win championships.
Play in a bowl game.
Has it not been stated repeatedly here that most college sports run at a deficit? Could someone please clarify that? I get the feeling at times that between the Legislature and UH administration, a reasonable solution will never be reached.

UH should also consider working with local restaurants and doing a “restaurant week” type event where a portion of sales from those restaurants during that time would go to UH athletics. It’s a way for public to help UH athletics while doing something they already do without actually handing over their own money directly to the school and they get something in return, a meal. There would guarantee be a bunch of places that would be willing to help out. Many of them participate in other UH events like the baseball pre season grand slam.

Old Diver, thank you for the information regarding autonomy which disallows the legislature from earmarking monies to specific departments. Good information. But it also raises a question that I have. How does the John A Burns School of Medicine differ from any other department, say the Shidler School of Business or the College of Engineering? I ask because the John A Burns School of Medicine is a separate line item in the operating budget?
I feel sorry for BJ, but it’s time to go…UH needs a new AD with a fresher perspective on “How” we can make this all work-out. We need more of “how we can” versus “why we can’t” in our UH & State vocabulary.

Yeah I just don’t understand why ideas like that have not been done or at least explored by UH before. I mean of course it takes time to plan, etc but it sure could make the school money. Not to mention UH is already having trouble with public donations since they don’t exactly have the people’s trust at the moment, so something like that would be a perfect way to raise money.

Implement a lottery that adds funds for higher education and State’s collegiate athletic programs. Most states have lotteries … many to fund education. It’s as American as apple pie. Before income taxes it was used by the federal and state governments to fund improvement programs and other services.
Just my opinion … but that would generate a lot money that could support the UH and its sports programs. If NCAA has problem with it … fund something else and divert that program’s funds to the UH!

Something like that could be organized by students. It doesn’t require only paid professionals to organize and execute. There are always students looking for internships and what better way to utilize free labor.
I would have jumped at an opportunity to do something like that while I was finishing up school.

When I read about possible cuts to the sailing teams, I wondered if that was to draw the interest of a certain billionaire who owns Lanai and has a top sailboat in the World’s Cup. If he helped, there would be new sailing equipment, facilities. and maybe a Lanai campus. 😕
I just don’t get it! UH upper campus will NOT fund UH athletics? Who, at upper campus, made/makes this decision? Seems like it’s the “acting” chancellor’s call, and appears, not a sports minded individual.
Surely, if unions and businesses can work out contracts, so should UH and the Legislature. If not, just change the “autonomy” legislation wherein the Legislature can do whatever it wants to fund a specific concern ( such as Title IX and travel subsidies ).
What will the acting chancellor do when the Cancer Center depletes all its funds? Tell them too bad!!!!!!! This guy is a joke!!!!!!!!!!!! and, not to far behind, is the UH President!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
These are the times I wish the General was selected as UH President – at least, if he is worth any salt, decisions will be made based on a sound methodology of gathering facts, reviewing facts, create options, select the best, and execute. Not to forget any ” FOLLOW UP” which too many businesses don’t do to determine if the decision was correct/working as intended or changes are necessary.
I do not believe that certain individuals who are selected as Presidents of colleges or universities have this skill honed to where they can put it to good use. All selection committees are looking for is ACADEMIC achievement(s) and degrees held. These do not equate to being a good leader who makes sound decisions. After all, their near total experience has been in the academic field – being a Prof, etc.

Have to disagree with posters who say the options presented by Bad Job were well done. 1. Do you really think UH is going to do something that would put it in violation of compliance with Title IX? Why is that even on the table? Surely the options should all include staying in compliance. Bad Job is really freaking stupid.
2. Men’s swimming and diving and coed sailing should already have been cut. You don’t need a committee or group decision to do that. Bad Job is the AD. Make like a leader and lead. 3. Need revenue? Double the student activity fee. Start a state lottery with proceeds going to education and UH athletics. Allow shipboard gambling on interisland cruises with proceeds going to education including UH Athletics. 4. Crying that no one attends football? The coach should of been changed already, a new coach would of sparked interest and ticket sales. 5. UH is really freaking stupid. Bad Job has lost the respect of the community. He’s inept. He’s hapless. He has quit. What the heck is he still doing on the job? Get rid of him and do it quick. I tell you what – if Rick Blangiardi or Keith is chosen I’d immediately start donating to UH Athletics again.

55. When the Shidler School of Business gets a $25M gift for its business school, it goes to that program (or they won’t get future gifts). But, since an appropriation is in a budget, and UH can claim autonomy, putting money in the budget for UHAD is NOT a gift, and the BOR does what is wants and can divert the funds.
Hmmmm.
Don’t cut the football program…and don’t go to FCS either.
The state of Hawaii will lose out on money. Hopefully people can see the potential income that comes into our state when UH starts winning.

I don’t disagree with your point of view, but how is the AD going to start a state lottery all on his own? Our state legislators have been opposed to gambling in any shape or form for some time. Our AD has been in over his head from the get go, but we can’t lay all the blame on him. Tropical storm? Beach Erosion? Crime? All BJ’s fault?

#84: If you close the swap-meet and get rid of UH football, the Stadium Authority would be totally bankrupt and would not exist…
Remember the days when concerts were held at the Stadium along with Monster truck, baseball games, and other events??? Wasn’t the Authority supposed to market and use the stadium for other revenue generating activities?
I still think UH should have their own on-campus stadium even if they have to just add seats to Ching Field to increase the capacity to 20,000. At least, they can hold soccer, football, and other “field activities” there and collect proceeds. We would probably make as much money using a 20,000 seat stadium on campus as we would having 40,000 at No Aloha since we don’t have concession proceeds.
The U. of Nevada has an on-campus field that is “humble” at best, but fits their needs and so does UNLV.
Another thing…Make the stadium to “last” awhile…Bench seats are fine and you’ll find it throughout the U.S. Luxury boxes are fine and will bring you corporate revenue/sponsorship.

Who are they? Anyone that draws a State of Hawaii pay check at the UH campus.
Coaches, department heads, administrators, you name it. If they are unwilling to do that then why should I. I left that dojo forty years ago, I support the school and the teams but I derive no financial benefit from there.
If they are willing to donate 5-10% of their pay check to support the program I will do the same.
People working there are some of the highest paid state employees in Hawaii.

Hawaii athletics is the canary in the coal mine: Hawaii’s tax base if shrinking as the bulk of the population tips into retirement, the military downsizes and moves out of Hawaii, and the once lucrative Japanese tourist market continues to languish in a deflationary quagmire. The tourist numbers are decent, but the spending per day doesn’t rival the cash cow of the 1980s.
As Hawaii’s tax base shrivels over the next twenty to thirty years, a lot more hard choices are going to have to be made about luxury spending. Furthermore, our political leaders seem unwilling to allow gambling and legalized marijuana (Both taxable and sources of new revenue: By the way, the Department of Health is managing the broader distribution of medical marijuana which is a step toward legalized marijuana, but with no appreciable tax collection)
Hawaii is facing huge costs going forward (the rail line is just one of many big ticket items that everybody is going to have to pay more taxes to sustain)
At the heart of the matter, the business of UH is to provide an education, and the faculty bring in $300 million dollars a year in new money from outside granting agencies. The faculty income generation efforts dwarf anything football brings to the table. Subsidizing football at the expense of the core mission of UH is absurd. So, unless we all want to be taxed a lot more to fully fund UH so that there is money left over for football/athletics (there is something along the lines of $500 million dollars in renovations coming due, and our faculty is considered among the lowest paid in the nation despite having one of the highest costs of living in the U.S.), there are going to have to be cuts to athletics.

Don’t stop with yachting and swimming/diving. Cut the tennis, golf, water polo and, track teams as. I believe UH will still be ok with title 9. Lets not forget to put the football team out to the highest bidders for all non conference games.

maybe they should look into a split into 2!! upper and lower and each get a set amount a year !! then it up to the head of the upper or lower to get money and control there money that come in that year !!

Per NCAA rules, you need a minimum of 6 mens and 8 women’s sports or seven and seven. I believe the number of scholarships have to balance. So, on the mens side, you could cut only one and you would have to be careful on the women’s side because of title 9.
Title 9 ruined college sports.
If football is the engine that drives athletics, shouldn’t we beef up the motor? Its takes money to add horsepower. Any hot rodder knows that. You add horsepower, you win races. You win races, you make money and sponsers. What I’m saying is UH has to invest in the money sports and it will pay for itself and all those money losing sports.
Cutting Football or going FCS should/would never be a option, period. BJ numb nuts okole even saying that shows how much he didn’t belong as Hawaii AD. Think about it for a minute?
If you are the breadwinner of the house and everyone else in your house is breaking even or spending more than they make… Do you quit your job as breadwinner and see what happens to the rest of the household?
Or, if you have 22 employees and 1 is doing most of the work making you money and 2 or 3 are working enough to breakeven and the other 17 or so are underperforming workers. What would you do? Your not going to fire the 1 employee that is making you money and not causing you to worry about money.
BJ threats of cutting football that is actually in the black (Making Money) was a scare tactic that backfired on him and UH when it got some attention is the media in Hawaii and on the mainland. I actually agree with most of you that cutting the sports down to 16 just like many BCS schools is the best option.
I believe Football, Mens Basketball, Baseball, Volleyball and Womens Basketball, Softball and Volleyball that are sure 7 sports that are sure fire safe from being cut. The rest of UH Mens and Womens sports are fair game IMO for being on the chopping block.

#108, I don’t believe there’s a lot of women sports that you can cut because of the number of scholarships that football takes up. Per title 9, there has to be a balance.
You could cut the number of football scholarships down by dropping to FCS but then who would follow? This would allow some cutting on the womens side. Tough decisions.

Any talk of dropping down to FCS or cutting football altogether is tunnel vision. #25 points out $7 million just in taxes. Think of how much spending it takes to generate that much in taxes. Stadium workers, hotel workers, store workers all getting paid and being able to buy things for their families. Hotel rooms, ground transportation, food (football players eat a lot). Beer, poke, other food, ice, etc. being bought for tailgating or watching PPV at home. So what if the athletic department loses some money, football provides a big benefit to the people of this state and the economy, even for those people who think they don’t gain anything from it.

I’m all about equal opportunity but I’m more about open market. I’m a believer that you invest in what can make you most profitable. It is not fair that a football player can bring in a bunch of money to a program and the woman that brings in 0 revenue gets the same scholarship as the football player. It doesn’t work that way in the real world, don’t see why college sports are any different.

apparently got plenty naïve applicants, who don’t know what the job entails.
Governor Ige just made it clear he does not want to add state funds to the State budget to cover the budget request from UH (story in today’s Star Advertiser). He says that under UH autonomy, the UH needs to decide how much of the money they get from the State to spend on athletics. This will mean it is virtually certain that the UH will NOT get the $ 3 Million they requested for Title IX compliance and travel subsidies for the athletic department. This will put it back on the UH and the regents to decide whether and how to subsidize UH sports.
Ask Larry Ellison if he has a friend who wants to be AD.

129–With all due respect, Mr. Ellison has not interest in UH or its athletics. I know for a fact that there have been, subtle backdoor attempts to gauge his interest–there is none. His philanthropic endeavors related to universities are largely centered around Harvard and Stanford. As for his potential interest in football, the only football that is on his radar, is being a principal behind a group of investors seeking to bring an NFL team to Los Angeles.
