Warriors stay at No. 6, Sedore MPSF POW

Maybe a bit of a surprise. but the teams ahead of Hawaii kept winning so many not.
That said, I think Hawaii going 5 with SC twice and splitting should have carried more weight that UCI’s 3-1 win over winless UCSD.
But that’s just how the points fall
USC gets a first-place vote, from the UCI coach. those points were enough to keep SC tied with Lewis.

Loyola-Chicago with 17 votes stay at No. 1
Lewis tied with SC at No. 2.
4-8 stay the same.

Also congrats to Sedore
Power keeps going out in Kailua so updating has been hard.

Well, beating No. 2 USC and No. 5 UCI apparently carries little weight. For now. I guess Warriors just have to keep winning. Upcoming games against Pepperdine, UCLA, BYU and Stanford will provide more than enough opportunity to show what kind of team the are.

The coaches poll is pretty much a sham in Hawai’s case. Our matches are past the times of the East Coast coaches bed times and the Midwest coaches (unless they’ve been to Hawaii) don’t count us in for much over the past few years.

We did win the 3rd tie breaker with USC (for MPSF tourney seeding), so that may count for something when the MPSF tourney happens should Hawaii and USC finish close to each other.

National polls in men’s volleyball tend to settle towards the end of the season, when they can affect national Final Six seedings. For now, just ignore them. League standings are the only thing that matters.

Don, I wouldn’t worry about the polls at the moment. It’s 18 coaches voting.

For one thing, there are three automatic berths into the NCAA tournament. The only EIVA team in the Top 15 is No. 13 Harvard so unless Penn State makes a late run, the Crimson will be in

The battle at the moment will be which of the MIVA teams are in or out: you have Loyola, Lewis, IPFW and Ball State all ranked. And there will be a League Carolinas berth in the play-in game.

For another thing, that East Coast-Midwest time difference doesn’t play a big role. the only time it might is if Hawaii has a rare Sunday match. but the Saturday results are available real time and in time for Sunday voting.

BTW, Sedore AVCA player of the week.

    1. Those wins do carry weight. The problem is the teams ahead of Hawaii also keep winning. It’s just how voting in these polls work. As mentioned, a real case could be made for UCI and Hawaii to trade spots, given that UH went 5 twice with No. 2 and UCI got past winless UCSD in four. However, UCI also has a nonconference win over UH.
