Union 76

While growing up, Campbell High lineman Arona Amosa heard the stories about his father, Amosa Amosa, a former UH lineman.

“I was hoping to make some stories of my own,” said Arona Amosa, who will join the Warriors as a preferred walk-on.

Amosa Amosa said he often told his son about then-UH coach Dick Tomey’s recruiting pitch.

“Coach Tomey showed me (Jesse) Sapolu’s jersey and told me, ‘This is going to be your number when you come to Hawaii,'” the elder Amosa recalled. “I said, ‘I’m in.’ I wore that 76 my whole career.”

And what a career for Amosa Amosa, who now is Campbell’s head coach, a father of eight and a recent grandfather.

Yesterday, UH coach Norm Chow called Amosa Amosa and told him his son’s jersey number will be 76.

    Any word on new hires?

    Great Ohana. Welcome Young Amosa

I think it’s going to happen, maybe, next week?
It has to go through the HR, background checks, etc.
I do know that I had a missed call from Dennis McKnight. I bet he’d be interesting in being the next Demo. I think McKnight rode a motorcycle from Dallas to El Paso to interview with Chow at the Sun Bowl in 2011.

Not happy at all. But at least we have a team to root for. Could b interesting to c this class grow. Im jus saying that being positive for what we have is better then complaining. Win or lose, we have a team. Rise together, fall together. The kids deserve our support n to stay positive. I mean could b worse. Could b where no one chose here n we have no team. But no I’m not happy. Jus trying to stay promising.

ST wat is going on wit ursua? Is he still coming here after everything is Cleared up?

  8. Shoko February 5, 2015 9:29 am

Since Warriors are playing Colorado next season. Jim Leavitt, former linebackers coach for the Niners, is the new defensive coordinator for the Buffs.

Any late signers? Roe Farris confirm?

  10. Shoko February 5, 2015 9:32 am

Ah, thanks. I agree that McKnight would be an interesting hire. He reminds me of Stone Cold Steve Austin.

  11. hatakeman February 5, 2015 9:34 am

Great move by Chow to personally call Amosa Amosa to tell him his son will wear #76. Class move. But I wonder why no scholie offer for Arona? And what will Chow do about Matautia’s long hair? I head on this morning’s BC show that Matautia has maintained long hair since the 4th grade or since he was 4 years old and is extremely reluctant to cut his hair. Interesting to see if Chow will soften his shot-hair policy and allow longer hair or just simply long hair.

  12. seewhy February 5, 2015 9:36 am

Great read, ST! Will be looking forward to seeing Amosa wearing that #76 this fall.

  13. seewhy February 5, 2015 9:38 am

    hatakeman:
I was wondering about that too. Can he at least put it in a bun instead of chopping it off?

  14. tom-warriornation February 5, 2015 9:42 am

Like I said before, Chow should eliminate his no long hair policy.

  15. Arcumfortis February 5, 2015 9:44 am

Good post today ST. These are the things that make Hawaii football great even in those times (like now) when things seem grim. I remember at the end of the Von Appen years thinking UH football was done. I was very wrong. We will rise again one way or another. I, like many, have become doubtful that coach Chow can turn the program around. If he does I will be glad for him and for us. If he does not there will be another coach who will.

  16. Old Divera February 5, 2015 9:44 am

Saw Dennis McKnight at the gym a number of years ago. The guy is huge.

  17. islandman February 5, 2015 9:47 am

Poster on WSN says Tom Mason will be the new DC, per SMU forums . I don’t think he has UH experience, although he was a LB coach at Fresno before. SMU fans seem to have good feelings toward him.

  18. al February 5, 2015 9:51 am

In this day and age, there might be only three other schools that have a short hair cut policy.

    Besides its a cultural thing.

  19. islandman February 5, 2015 9:51 am

    16. Not confirmed though.

  20. al February 5, 2015 9:52 am

16… There must be little birdies in Dallas, too.

  21. al February 5, 2015 9:56 am

It pains me that it takes the university* so long to get a background check done. All they need do is jump on an Internet service that provides that stuff in nano-seconds.

*An institute of higher education…go figure.

  22. al February 5, 2015 9:59 am

To take this further…Chow is a strong member of the Church of Latter Day Saints. Somebody remind him that Jesus has long hair.

  23. seewhy February 5, 2015 10:08 am

    al:
Haha! That Jesus comment was too funny.

  24. Tempmanoa February 5, 2015 10:09 am

From the WSN Board, looks like we have a new DC– Tom Mason from SMU. He took over as interim coach when June left. Seems like a good get.

  25. Inyoface February 5, 2015 10:09 am

Please let the new players keep their long hair Coach Chow. We need an identity which we are lacking. They can cut their hair after college if they decide to but you lose power when cutting of body parts.

  26. jeezy33 February 5, 2015 10:10 am

Coaches with a power trip that want control over everything is in the past.. Not gonna cut it in this day and age…

  27. Arcumfortis February 5, 2015 10:11 am

I too think the hair policy is not a good one. It seems out of touch with both the cultural inflection of Hawaii and prevailing norms. How can a young Polynesian football player not look at someone like Troy Polamalu with admiration. Does Troy lose points because of his hair style? Hardly. Instead he gets hair product endorsements. Get with it coach Chow. Have the courage to review any and all of your policies that don’t work. What have you got to lose at this stage of your tenure?

  28. iwonderwhytheyhateme February 5, 2015 10:13 am

    #21 Al,

    No Comment. Oops.

  29. Arcumfortis February 5, 2015 10:14 am

If our new DC is Tom Mason he may also be our new HC (at least a candidate) if this season follows the pattern of the last.

SMU….hmmm……..is that a hint of JJ in the air I detect?

  30. jeezy33 February 5, 2015 10:14 am

Question for anyone… Is there any upside to signing Kamuela Borden? I think he is going to be a very good football player. But if he counts towards 25 scholarships that can be signed this year, doesn’t it hurt us? Wouldn’t a verbal agreement be just as effective? Giving us a extra LOI to sign. We seem to be doing fine signing players after their mission like Collie, Kauhi, etc… Just not sure what the upside is to signing players like Ursua, Richards, Borden, Lavaka when they could very easily bolt to another school anyway and there is no guarantee our coaches will be here in 2 years…

Just a thought. Hoping someone can tell me I’m wrong here with facts..

  31. hitman February 5, 2015 10:18 am

morning all , wow that was a lot comments yesterday ! ST was that the ever? thank you & Welcome Young Amosa to the UH family and keeping that amosa name going at UH !!

  32. Kifi February 5, 2015 10:19 am

    #29 – I agree wholeheartedly.

  33. Shoko February 5, 2015 10:22 am

I think Chow said he wanted to “lock em up” as the reasoning. One-way binding agreement to prevent BYU from poaching without reservation?

  34. graham February 5, 2015 10:22 am

Mason is not an exciting hire but decently solid. I do not think that anyone expected a homerun hire.

  35. al February 5, 2015 10:23 am

Borden’s scholie will count for the year in which he returns from his LDS mission and not the initial 25 max.

  36. bowwar February 5, 2015 10:24 am

Good to see it’s still in the bloodlines to be Warriors…Amosa was a good UH player and I’m sure his son will be one too.

I’m hoping Chow will get an experienced OC too, as I think he should just concentrate on being a head coach.

Chow was never my favorite, but I do wish him the best in getting a winning season…Nothing would make me happier than to see the Warriors in the Hawaii Bowl in December. Likewise, we need a new AD ASAP, so we can start cleaning up the mess that BJ has left…

  37. al February 5, 2015 10:24 am

33…home runs are too expensive these days.

  38. al February 5, 2015 10:27 am

  39. SteveM February 5, 2015 10:31 am

    Touching story about #76.
Hope you all chill and stay positive, everybody.
Good luck to Chow on the new hires.

  41. seewhy February 5, 2015 10:37 am

    #35

BJ inherited the mess… And added to it. The next AD better have job experience with Servpro.

  42. jeezy33 February 5, 2015 10:39 am

    34.
It won’t count this year, but you can only sign 25 loi. So unless it was some kind of scholarship agreement, it affects the amount of players we can sign..

  43. Kifi February 5, 2015 10:45 am

#36 – Yes home runs are expensive. But with SMU being 109th nationally in total defense in 2015, would that be like a single?

  44. oldtimer808 February 5, 2015 10:45 am

I heard ST on the Curran show that Coach Chow will forego the short hair policy and allow players to grow their hair out if so desired and allow those with long hair.

  45. al February 5, 2015 10:47 am

    Kifi…a bunt perhaps.

  46. al February 5, 2015 10:48 am

hitman — the record number of posts for a ST blog entry was 2,258. However, if a midnight cutoff time is used (since it was supposed to be last day of the blog under the Honolulu Advertiser before merger), then the number is 1,475. On other days: 1,702 when UHfan808 rallied the blog and 1,202 when whitey lead the charge up “Mauna Kea”. JJ’s leaving for SMU only got 1,175 comments.

@Post #39, we will all be fine because we pray to God that our home team will succeed.

  50. al February 5, 2015 11:00 am

I actually thought that chow would have focused more on JC players to provide an influx of ready made replacements.

Perhaps he should have expanded his search to the talent laden areas like Texas, Arizona as well as California.

  51. Turfwar February 5, 2015 11:08 am

http://www.smumustangs.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/tom_mason_345080.html I’d be happy with this hire. An experienced guy who’s been around a lot of different programs from pro leagues to small colleges. Saw Coach Powell last night at the volleyball game and thanked him for everything he’s done as a coach and recruiter. He was very thankful for the acknowledgement and humbled that people recognized his contributions. Great guy who I hope has a long tenure here at UH.

  52. hitman February 5, 2015 11:19 am

    thank u 47 for that info !!
cant belief how chow is so high on this qb maxx that he got !! it only for one year !!
hope he has good legs to buy time in the passing game !!

  53. islandman February 5, 2015 11:19 am

Only thing was i thought someone said the new DC would run a 4-3 and had experience at UH before. Maybe the choice changed, if the man named is the one.

  54. al February 5, 2015 11:22 am

    53…another contingency plan b?

  55. al February 5, 2015 11:23 am

    51…see 42

  56. graham February 5, 2015 11:26 am

Any word on the other 2 coaches who might be leaving? I really do not want to lose Coach Powell.

  57. PONO February 5, 2015 11:26 am

Maybe someone can also help me understand something mentioned in his presser. He said that Amanda the compliance lady would only give him 25 loi’s. So if someone didn’t qualify they wouldn’t be allowed to backfill that slot. Seems really stupid.

  58. kev-1 February 5, 2015 11:30 am

Chow actually let slip in yesterday’s interview on the radio that the new DC coming in would probably like to run more 4 down linemen sets.

  59. kahuna February 5, 2015 11:31 am

Since Norm is picking up Mason I wonder if he is going to bring on anyone else from the SMU staff that was let go. We have plenty holes to fill and some of the SMU coaches have UH/Hawaii ties. Also if Mason comes aboard I wonder if he will be coaching db’s or linebacker along with being a DC. We do need both a db and a lb coach.

  60. al February 5, 2015 11:33 am

Speaking of 42. What a shame that the mbb ncaa investigation scared him off. Isaac was probably a victim of circumstance.

  61. al February 5, 2015 11:34 am

59…we have a great lb coach in Kurt Gouveia.

  62. Makai February 5, 2015 11:38 am

Game is won in the trenches! Got some projects on the O-line we need some late surprises on the defensive side!

  63. kev-1 February 5, 2015 11:38 am

So were Mason’s defenses any good? I don’t recall SMU having a good defense.

  64. letsgowarriors February 5, 2015 11:40 am

    PONO,

each school is only allowed to sign 25 LOI each year through May 31st. this was put into place to prevent schools from oversigning. so now schools are “oversigning” by “blueshirting” recruits.

if u hit your 25 LOI limit and you find out a couple of guys are not going to qualify, you cant sign anyone else.

  65. letsgowarriors February 5, 2015 11:44 am

if i was a betting man, id say the 2 coaches that are gone are Jordan Wynn and Luke Matthews. ive only head 4 coaches names from recruits: Naeole & Powell mostly, and Moses & Gouveia to a lesser extent.

Demo was MIA all recruiting season. havent heard a peep about Wynn or Matthews either. so theyd be my guess.

  66. letsgowarriors February 5, 2015 11:44 am

    heard*

  67. seewhy February 5, 2015 11:47 am

    RE: al #61

Ditto. last time I check, Kurt was still here.

  68. marleysdad February 5, 2015 11:47 am

#49 Huh?, how’s that praying working out for you? Hahahaha!!!

  69. al February 5, 2015 11:51 am

I often wonder how things could have been if chow tossed out his ego and kept Rolo as the OC.

  70. seewhy February 5, 2015 11:57 am

I really wonder how Tom will fare at UH. I clearly remember SMU getting torched in their first 7 games by 40 points or more. That’s not good considering UH only scores an average of 21 points per game. However with that being said, having a DC is better than having none.

  71. Tempmanoa February 5, 2015 12:01 pm

Al 69, imagine if Chow had kept Aranda now one of the best defensive coordinators in the country– his defenses ranked sixth in the country over the last 4 years. Well, looking ahead with Tom Mason and hope he can make us forget Aranda (and Clune and Kaumeyer).

  72. Liz Kauai February 5, 2015 12:07 pm

Still here for our Rainbow Warriors. Even tho no Kauai boys yet…

  73. willieboy February 5, 2015 12:08 pm

63 kev1 – how could his defense have any kind of a chance to succeed when JJ’s offense was going 3 and out on every possession. lol

  74. SteveM February 5, 2015 12:17 pm

    RE: ST’s #3
Dennis McKnight? I can visualize him as Special Teams coach. Was on JJ’s staff twice in Hawaii and he is quite a line coach, motivator and colorful guy. I remember ST’s blog entry when the team was on the road and McKnight and DeLaura needed a car to check out a local gym when ST & Ferd walked into the hotel…. ๐Ÿ™‚

Downside on McKinight might be his players get injured from his flying chest bumps and congrats thumping as they come off the field after making a great play.

  75. seewhy February 5, 2015 12:18 pm

    RE: willieboy #73

But so was UH’s offense. Haha!

  76. A-House February 5, 2015 12:20 pm

I learned something about football scholarships today when someone posted that Amanda would allow only 25 scholarships – didn’t realize as compliance person she had the final say.

BTW, does her job description entail “screwing the UH athletic program(s)” or helping UH to steer away from “issues” by working with the coaching staff whenever she sees “problems”? I recall the US Army Inspector General focus shifted from “hammer banging on heads” to one of finding “systemic problems/issues” and recommending ways to correct.

  77. st. anthony trojan February 5, 2015 12:22 pm

TOM N POLLY… me agree you both on yesterdays post..(early morning)..
    It is called… CRM…= Customer Relations Management….which BJ n the UHAD (AARP) has a ZERO rating…ZERO rating = I/WE DON’T CARE…n or lazy to correct by staff…

Like sum on here… not want to hear complaints n or criticism…or read about it…it is the life blood of ne business…(except the military)

Me remember reading many years ago…a CEO saying…when he was newly hired..the first dept. he went to visit… was the complaint dept…cuz when ‘customers’ are not happy…they will let you know…n should heed or at least acknowledge the complaints….and correct…coach has not done so….do we all AGREE IT IS GETTING WORSE… ?????????

If we really want to correct….we should take page from the media n politicos.. n have a ‘EXIT’ poll…n find out the real reason…why many not want to stay home…n go play for other IN THE MWC….losing a student to A BIG FIVE SCHOOL is understandable… compared what they WILL offer to UH….no problem there for me….to one in our conference…hard to swallow…n will only work..if parents n kids are assured..it will be in strict confidence…then we can correct…however for now…think most agree…coach has to go….he is a ‘distraction’ 4 sure…n no confidence….

Their are sum times a leader should not take the lead….n step aside to his subordinates…recruiting is one of them…Mr. OL coach….want a dude from
    N. Dakota….Mr. DL coach want a dude from S. Dakota….final should be their decision…they will be position coach.. n if they are ne good…will have good results in coaching them up…seems to me…he was in that position…when he did nor like a QB when he was coaching in the pros…n made that known…when the QB went bust…sum can see.. but no vision….if not…is called micro-management…usually leads to disaster…IMUA NEW RECRUITS….

  78. A-House February 5, 2015 12:23 pm

BTW, whenever a new coach comes into UH, who signs the contract for UH?

Is it the UHAD or chancellor or General counsel? where does HGEA sign?

  79. letsgowarriors February 5, 2015 12:26 pm

25 LOI limit is a NCAA rule, not an Amanda Peterson rule.

  80. letsgowarriors February 5, 2015 12:28 pm

if Chow didnt know (in his 4th recruiting season as HC) that hes limited to 25 LOI to be signed for the year and he wasted some of that allotment on non-qualified guys and/or mission kids who arent going to enroll next sememster, thats on him.

  81. Lowtone123 February 5, 2015 12:30 pm

UCLA DC Jeff Ulbrich is taking a position on the Atlanta Falcons staff as LB coach.

  82. st. anthony trojan February 5, 2015 12:30 pm

al…. to quote bobby knight… but ‘jesus walked on water’….don’t think chow is ion that class he he he

should we give him more time ????

  83. sofaking_blk February 5, 2015 12:35 pm

It’s a good thing to stay positive. Like I said before I’ve been a Warriors fan since 92. If you can survive the Von Appen year then you can survive anything. But the patience of most of the fan base is either gone or wearing out and you can’t fault them for that. I’ve very happy that recruits are still willing to come here and play for UH despite everything that is going on over the past 3 years. All I’m saying is that they (the Players) deserve better than this, YOU as a loyal Warriors fan deserve better. We complain not because we’re being negative but because we care about this program and the direction it’s heading. That’s what being a fan is all about.

  84. islandman February 5, 2015 12:38 pm

    78. A-House –On Gib’s and Norm’s contracts, the AD,the Chancellor and HGEA Executive Director signed besides the coach.

There was no signature of the UH legal department.

  85. jonj February 5, 2015 12:39 pm

So if I’m reading correct by signing a LDS mission kid with an LOI we actually take away 2 initials schollies?? So by signing zwhallen, ursua, lavaka, Borden we use 8 initial schollies??

  86. Da Punchbowl Kid February 5, 2015 12:49 pm

Great story. Amosa bloodlines strong at UH!

Some very hair raising questions about the policy now in place. That’s my pun. Anybody else?

  87. kahuna February 5, 2015 12:50 pm

Maybe Mason have not set the world on fire at his other stops but there is always the chance that he find his groove here and turn the defense around. At least that is my hope. Maybe at the other places he went, he was a bad fit or he didn’t get the players he wanted or the HC was micromanaging the defense or something like that.

Dave Aranda was a fairly average coach before coming to UH and now is one of the top defensive minds in college football so maybe a lot of small stuff(like a good fit, getting players to play hard for you, and having a HC who let you run the defense) could turn an average DC into a good one.

Mason does have experience in the NCAA, CFL and XFL and have also coached multiple position so he has good football knowledge.

  88. champ February 5, 2015 1:12 pm

#20 Al. You are absolutely correct. thats what we call today a stupid, overpaid bureaucracy, not a smart one mind u but a stupid one. Thats why UH is all screwed up! They should have runners posted in and around campus so they can run to the next level and have them approve with in hours. Some students would love to have a job like that and at minimum wage at that! Or maybe we should mandate that these so called execs run it up themselves. Should be beneficial for themselves as well the school-should be a prerequisite for those positions that do approvals.

  89. Boolakanaka February 5, 2015 1:15 pm

  93. tom February 5, 2015 1:25 pm

    78 (AHouse) and #84 Islandman

UH legal counsel does the contracts and the language therein – but the people cited by Islandman signs them.

It’s the usual “circle of life” the AD, Chancellor etc usually will assume that it is OK to sign because it was prepared (as a rule) by the UH legal counsel. And if there is a major/minor problem in language that was lacking that would make UH liable, a good attorney for the coach or whoever isn’t going to tell the UH people that they goofed!

  94. iwonderwhytheyhateme February 5, 2015 1:31 pm

  98. jeezy33 February 5, 2015 1:45 pm

93.–tom ; looks like UH legal department goofed BIG . An article said the VP, of Legal Affairs and University General Counsel, job is being advertised as of this past Tuesday.

  102. ArcumFortis February 5, 2015 2:00 pm

    83. I think this is a valid point. We, the fans, were here before the current coaches and players and will be here after they are gone. I am generally an optimistic person and don’t enjoy trashing others much. I usually find myself cringing when others partake in this activity. But we do deserve a winning program. There will be down years and most understand this. But this is headed for a down decade and that is very, very destructive for a program. So if there is some negativity about it is not surprising. All I know for sure about coach Chow is that he has been unable to produce a winning football team. A lot of the rest about who he is as a person and as a coach I know nothing about personally. I am guessing that is true of most who trash him. But we can be respectful and still recognize we have a big problem. It’s hard to not have negativity creep in. But, hey, we beat Colorado in the season opener and this will cheer up quickly. All most fans need is some hope that we can win any given game and a team that plays hard even when they lose. This playing hard when we lose is already in place. It is just not enough when the losses are consistently present.

    The UH Name Game…
    1) Amosa Amosa
    2) Arona Amosa
    3) Lene Amosa
    4) Jared Lene
    5) …………

  104. st. anthony trojan February 5, 2015 3:21 pm

Maybe sum one here knows…n clarify my thinking…
Few of our coaches leave….takes months to replace…

    Waianae football coach resigns…replaced within a week…
    Both state agencies….why is UH …so different…????

Is it because he is a teacher at that school ?

  105. cheepono February 5, 2015 3:27 pm

    Jared Leaf

  106. bowwar February 5, 2015 3:39 pm

ST: Still on glaring omission in our recruiting…Who’s going to be our place kicker in the coming year? Is that still on recruitment list? Can Trifonovich do Kick-offs or just punting?

  107. warriorsanddolphins February 5, 2015 3:40 pm

So what ever happened to Tolu Fieeiki the juco defensive end that committed to us a while ago?

  108. bowwar February 5, 2015 3:43 pm

On coaches, is Morrison still at SMU or would he be available as a QB coach? I think Reinhold and McKnight might be two proven and available coaches to assist Chow. McKnight was very much a motivational coach with the special teams at UH.

  109. Lowtone123 February 5, 2015 3:55 pm

Is Trifonovich the kid who kicked a 48 yarder in the state championship game vs Mililani? Watching that kid in warm ups and during the game he can hit the end zone on kick offs consistently, no problem.

  110. kryon February 5, 2015 4:14 pm

No worry jeezy. We will b better next yr garanz. Plus if not new coach. Nothing but upside!

  111. Willie February 5, 2015 4:36 pm

USC Trojans rated #1 recruiting class this year. Got two 4 star QBs signed, one 6’5″ & the other 6’4″.

With the other returning loaded QBs, Tulieta’s chances on the field his coming season tough going. Probably going to have to fight for a spot on the volleyball team to make a mark on campus.

  112. ai-eee-soos February 5, 2015 4:40 pm

ST: Isn’t Dennis McKnight in town? I thought he was hanging around with …

Stephen Tsai February 5, 2015 at 9:22 am
    Shoko:
I think itโ€™s going to happen, maybe, next week?
It has to go through the HR, background checks, etc.
I do know that I had a missed call from Dennis McKnight.

  113. Boolakanaka February 5, 2015 5:16 pm

If I’m not mistaken, Tuileta has already seen considerable playing time in volleyball, if not already started.

  114. Rodney February 5, 2015 5:17 pm

OMG Listening to uh b ball announcer
Sooo much better then our announcer
    Does anyone agree?
    Gives much more description .

  115. markazulu February 5, 2015 5:38 pm

Glad to see our Oline bulking up.

  116. BigFan February 5, 2015 6:13 pm

I know it’s difficult not to be negative sometimes but we should make a conscious effort to be classy about it. I saw a link posted by matsu on the scout board regarding a recruit. Just a reminder that they along with their families read the comments.

    https://twitter.com/kauhi_6

  117. JustAsking February 5, 2015 6:30 pm

#111 & #113: Boola is correct. Tuileta has already worked his way into the USC volleyball rotation even though he was with the football team through their bowl game. He saw considerable action in the 4th and 5th sets last night.

  118. markazulu February 5, 2015 6:32 pm

@116 I love that mentality to prove everyone wrong. Just hope the whole team has that mentality.

  119. Derek February 5, 2015 6:35 pm

Want stability in the coaching staff, Miano bleeds Rainbow Warrior green. Time for Chow and him to bury the hatchet and get him aboard to coach the secondary. He would accept.

  120. nanakuli February 5, 2015 6:56 pm

You right Rodney. BC always sound tired and bored in the second half.

  121. nanakuli February 5, 2015 6:59 pm

Hawaii and Benji win again. Gib is mo angry.

  122. graham February 5, 2015 7:18 pm

Any news on Roe Farris? He isn’t on rivals or scout and doesn’t really have much info on him. I’m kind of wondering if he is a D1 player

  123. oldyobo February 5, 2015 8:09 pm

Overall, a sad recruiting class, close to worst in UH Div.1 history. If it’s true Chow is relaxing the long hair restriction, at least he’s easing up on his restrictive puritanical view that has no basis in reality and was a purely hypocritical and bordering on racist philosophy (much like people wanting to ban hoodies on blacks). Did you read the total bull he threw out today about what great recruits he secured? Well, that tells all you need to know about his delusional state of mind, as well as others here gloating about the great recruiting class. When you folks come back down to Earth (please bring Tsai with you), take time to read the national ranking services – all of whom puts UH near the bottom. Ignore the facts if you like, call me negative if you like, but do so after you take your heads out from where the sun don’t shine. See you at the stadium (or should I call it the morgue).

  124. oldyobo February 5, 2015 8:12 pm

#122, you can wonder the same about almost all the recruits Chow got.

  125. warriorsanddolphins February 5, 2015 8:20 pm

hey yobo, i dont believe you are a ticketholder. your’e just a sour wuss. i guess you northern guys got that military background.

  126. Sangamon Keith February 5, 2015 8:27 pm

I did a little research on Farris. He’s coming from a small school. As a result, he has the challenge of not having played against stronger opponents like those in the larger and more competitive high school conferences. This means that he has the size and speed that a D-1 coach wants, he doesn’t have the competitive game experience to show his skills off. He might be a project but he does have the physical tools to be recruited. Remember, Bob Wagner told the story of how the coaches had to turn away and laugh the first time they saw walk-on Rich Miano practice, and he went on to a 10-year NFL career.

    Keith

  127. jeezy33 February 5, 2015 8:34 pm

    122. Was going to sign with Wagner College before Hawaii offered..

  128. oldyobo February 5, 2015 8:44 pm

#126, yeah it’s hard to believe when you’re not on Earth. Say hi to Tsai for me. By the way, when I first started going to games at the Stadium as a UH student, the student sections were near the 50 yard line. Probably before you were born.

  129. oneseason February 5, 2015 8:59 pm

Colorado State recruiting ranking plummeted to #119 (247sports) after losing their coach. Considering the coach staffing situation at UH, I am very grateful that students were willing to take a chance with this program. With Ohio St coming in at #6 and Wisconsin at #34 in 2015 recruiting, UH’s #129 would be daunting to most.

  130. tom February 5, 2015 9:00 pm

120 do we have the $$$ to hire Miano when fans write that they will not support the UHAD with $$$?

  131. oldyobo February 5, 2015 9:11 pm

Could we please get off this “hire Miano, hire Rolo, higher Lee brothers, and other hire local” nonsense? Only thing UH football needs right now is “fire Chow”.

  132. champ February 5, 2015 9:30 pm

#126 Old yobo! I used to go to the Honolulu Stadium when the ILH was both private and local hi schools. I remember all the local books and gamblers used to sit in the Ewa-makai section. Some of the books used to wait across the street when game ended and pay or collect…..The stadium had great boiled peanuts!! Ahh the old days!! UH used to get around 600-1000 per game. Hank Vasconcellos and Jimmy Asato were the coaches during that era and only had few recruits if any. Most were local players. Dave Holmes followed.

  133. cocobean February 5, 2015 10:12 pm

oldyobo, you should eat a snickers before you post……you’re not you when you’re hungry.

  134. Inyoface February 5, 2015 10:15 pm

BYU recruits a 6’7″410 lb kid from Tonga that’s not even fat. We missed out big time.

    http://fox13now.com/2015/02/04/byus-biggest-recruit-will-join-team-despite-never-having-played-football/

  135. hatakeman February 6, 2015 1:36 am

There were a few more coaches between Hank Vasconsellos and Dave Holmes. Jimmy Asato, Art Shaughnessy, Phil Sarboe and one more. The first year I started attending UH games, 1967, the head coach was Don King. Dave Holmes followed in 1968. Best athletes I saw at the old termite palace were Oregon’s Bobby Moore (Ahmad Rashad) and Long Beach State’s Leon Burns.

  136. Maddog50 February 6, 2015 4:13 am

Hatakeman, Leon Burns was an anomaly at the time. Believe he was in his mid to late 20’s when he played at LBSU. If I rcall he spent some time away from home before enrolling in college. A 2nd round draft choice. New Mexico Highlands also had a bunch of refugees from Div 1 schools including a couple who played NFL. I gave away so many chin straps leaving the field after a game I was on watch with George Smith the equipment guy that I would not get another one no matter what–those games were surreal…..huddling in the end zone you were almost in the crowd!

  137. boolakanaka February 6, 2015 5:10 am

Hiring Richie Rich is not a money thing (I’m just guessing, but he probably pulls something in the low six figures down by the water. The greater issue is his previous relationship with Norm (can they both make amends), does both lower and upper campus have the ability to digest him coming back to the fold, and if from a philosophical (both football and otherwise) standpoint is he symmetrical with the current staff?

I tell you this—if he did come back on board (and I am not saying there is evidence of this–this is mere speculation) it would be a whos-whos of Hawai’i prep football—Uperesa, Naeole, Gouveia, Miano. You know despite the w-l, record, if you were a young guy, and your intentions were the NFL (always a super long shot) those guys represent about 3 dozen years in the NFL–that is compelling.

  138. Maddog50 February 6, 2015 5:35 am

New to the roster in 2015 4 stars Wittek, Zwahlen, Davis. 3 stars Agasiva, Mautautia, Hensley, Riggins, Williams, Kemal-Kaleiwahea. 2stars Collie, Butler, Lavaka and Borden. 13 ranked. Unbanked Trifinovitch Norman Kauhi, Furota, Williams, Moananu and Harris. Might have missed a name. Trifinovitch first team AA at Chris Sailer camp, Williams first team AA in Jc, Webb ranked #63 in Texas. More additions to come but not so sure that if you use the formulas even skewed to fit our incoming mix it certainly would not be where it is today. So much for those scorecards. Go Warriors!!!! Sione if you read this I am with you. Kid!!!!!

  139. cappie the dog February 6, 2015 5:58 am

Every day I check the college basketball section on the ESPN website with the hope of not seeing any mention of Hawaii.

    That streak ends today.

Oh, and welcome Arona Amosa. Thank you for choosing Hawaii.

  140. pollypicador February 6, 2015 6:55 am

    Re-Amosa

I looked at his high school tape. Offensive linemen-LG. On the tape I immediately saw a pulling guard that had at least five pancakes. It looks like the players strength is getting out into open space and knocking players off their feet. That’s what I saw. He would make a great blocking back…possibly another Reagan type. I see RB. I see jersey number 32, 33, 40, 44 not 76.

    Re-Jordan Agasiva, OT, 6-4, 315

Here’s a incoming Hawaii recruit that was under evaluated in regards to the star system, recruitment by other schools and definitely under hyped.

    First team all-state.

Performed well against other big name players that went onto bigger schools and that had higher star ratings. Saw the players highlights. The knock on this player was that he has to work on his footwork. I say he has good footwork, athleticism, balance, toughness.

He is listed as a 2 star recruit, I think he should have been a 3. The player should be a future starter for the Warriors.

  141. A-House February 6, 2015 7:09 am

    hey guys & gals:

starting at the end of 2015 season let’s make a push to get Langi to change direction and attend UH after his 2-year LDS mission – like Mendenhal said, when the ball is snapped, just let him fall sideways to block the center and both guards! Is that legal?

“all is fair in love and war”

  142. hatakeman February 6, 2015 7:11 am

Maddog50, do you remember Richard Boone of “Have Gun Will Travel” as “Paladin” used to stand in line with the crowd to get his ticket? He never used his celebrity status to get in free or to avoid the lines. And yes, I remember the teams from New Mexico Highlands. Good fun. I especially miss the boiled peanuts.

  143. oldyobo February 6, 2015 7:18 am

#133, yup UH played after the high school games and hardly anyone stayed. Got cold as heck when it rained and I used to scurried under the bleachers and order hot saimin but the rain water still seeped between the rotten wood planks. We had some great individual talent with players being able to transfer and play without sitting out a year. Dave Holmes could teach Chow how to coach, even from his grave.

  144. tom February 6, 2015 7:27 am

    #136 hatakeman:

Archie Kodros (sp?) – how soon they forget! ๐Ÿ™‚

  145. tempmanoa February 6, 2015 7:50 am

The rating services not the endall of evaluation and we did get some good players, but also a lot of projects, and some question marks. The big question is how we stack up against other MWC teams– especially since we are trying to catchup. We need to be better than we were last year, and better than our competition in order to catch up. Where we come up short is comparisons to other MWC which have had great recruiting classes– we come up behind many of the MWC teams, means we will still struggle with depth and talent against the teams we need to beat.

  146. Old School Dave February 6, 2015 8:03 am

Paul Lee, DT – Roosevelt HS. Levi Stanley at the other DT.

  147. Maddog50 February 6, 2015 8:11 am

Paul Lee classmate and teamate Levi a year ahead. Two of the strongest guys on the team. Hitakeman Boone as Cicero Grimes in Hombre—Classic stuff!

  148. Old School Dave February 6, 2015 8:11 am

Rick Blangiardi told a story of when he was an assistant at UH. They had enough money to fly up to LA to recruit, but no money to rent a car. He said that the night before they left, a bunch of assistants drove up to Wahiawa and stole some pineapples and brought them with them to LA (lax agricultural rules back then). They went to the car rental counter at LAX and offered the boxes of pineapples in return for a rental for a few days.
