While growing up, Campbell High lineman Arona Amosa heard the stories about his father, Amosa Amosa, a former UH lineman.
“I was hoping to make some stories of my own,” said Arona Amosa, who will join the Warriors as a preferred walk-on.
Amosa Amosa said he often told his son about then-UH coach Dick Tomey’s recruiting pitch.
“Coach Tomey showed me (Jesse) Sapolu’s jersey and told me, ‘This is going to be your number when you come to Hawaii,'” the elder Amosa recalled. “I said, ‘I’m in.’ I wore that 76 my whole career.”
And what a career for Amosa Amosa, who now is Campbell’s head coach, a father of eight and a recent grandfather.
Yesterday, UH coach Norm Chow called Amosa Amosa and told him his son’s jersey number will be 76.

Great move by Chow to personally call Amosa Amosa to tell him his son will wear #76. Class move. But I wonder why no scholie offer for Arona? And what will Chow do about Matautia’s long hair? I head on this morning’s BC show that Matautia has maintained long hair since the 4th grade or since he was 4 years old and is extremely reluctant to cut his hair. Interesting to see if Chow will soften his shot-hair policy and allow longer hair or just simply long hair.

Good post today ST. These are the things that make Hawaii football great even in those times (like now) when things seem grim. I remember at the end of the Von Appen years thinking UH football was done. I was very wrong. We will rise again one way or another. I, like many, have become doubtful that coach Chow can turn the program around. If he does I will be glad for him and for us. If he does not there will be another coach who will.
Saw Dennis McKnight at the gym a number of years ago. The guy is huge.
Poster on WSN says Tom Mason will be the new DC, per SMU forums . I don’t think he has UH experience, although he was a LB coach at Fresno before. SMU fans seem to have good feelings toward him.
In this day and age, there might be only three other schools that have a short hair cut policy.

Please let the new players keep their long hair Coach Chow. We need an identity which we are lacking. They can cut their hair after college if they decide to but you lose power when cutting of body parts.

I too think the hair policy is not a good one. It seems out of touch with both the cultural inflection of Hawaii and prevailing norms. How can a young Polynesian football player not look at someone like Troy Polamalu with admiration. Does Troy lose points because of his hair style? Hardly. Instead he gets hair product endorsements. Get with it coach Chow. Have the courage to review any and all of your policies that don’t work. What have you got to lose at this stage of your tenure?

Question for anyone… Is there any upside to signing Kamuela Borden? I think he is going to be a very good football player. But if he counts towards 25 scholarships that can be signed this year, doesn’t it hurt us? Wouldn’t a verbal agreement be just as effective? Giving us a extra LOI to sign. We seem to be doing fine signing players after their mission like Collie, Kauhi, etc… Just not sure what the upside is to signing players like Ursua, Richards, Borden, Lavaka when they could very easily bolt to another school anyway and there is no guarantee our coaches will be here in 2 years…

Mason is not an exciting hire but decently solid. I do not think that anyone expected a homerun hire.
Borden’s scholie will count for the year in which he returns from his LDS mission and not the initial 25 max.
Good to see it’s still in the bloodlines to be Warriors…Amosa was a good UH player and I’m sure his son will be one too.
I’m hoping Chow will get an experienced OC too, as I think he should just concentrate on being a head coach.
Chow was never my favorite, but I do wish him the best in getting a winning season…Nothing would make me happier than to see the Warriors in the Hawaii Bowl in December. Likewise, we need a new AD ASAP, so we can start cleaning up the mess that BJ has left…

Saw Coach Powell last night at the volleyball game and thanked him for everything he’s done as a coach and recruiter. He was very thankful for the acknowledgement and humbled that people recognized his contributions. Great guy who I hope has a long tenure here at UH.

Maybe someone can also help me understand something mentioned in his presser. He said that Amanda the compliance lady would only give him 25 loi’s. So if someone didn’t qualify they wouldn’t be allowed to backfill that slot. Seems really stupid.
Chow actually let slip in yesterday’s interview on the radio that the new DC coming in would probably like to run more 4 down linemen sets.
Since Norm is picking up Mason I wonder if he is going to bring on anyone else from the SMU staff that was let go. We have plenty holes to fill and some of the SMU coaches have UH/Hawaii ties. Also if Mason comes aboard I wonder if he will be coaching db’s or linebacker along with being a DC. We do need both a db and a lb coach.

each school is only allowed to sign 25 LOI each year through May 31st. this was put into place to prevent schools from oversigning. so now schools are “oversigning” by “blueshirting” recruits.
if u hit your 25 LOI limit and you find out a couple of guys are not going to qualify, you cant sign anyone else.
if i was a betting man, id say the 2 coaches that are gone are Jordan Wynn and Luke Matthews. ive only head 4 coaches names from recruits: Naeole & Powell mostly, and Moses & Gouveia to a lesser extent.
Demo was MIA all recruiting season. havent heard a peep about Wynn or Matthews either. so theyd be my guess.

I really wonder how Tom will fare at UH. I clearly remember SMU getting torched in their first 7 games by 40 points or more. That’s not good considering UH only scores an average of 21 points per game. However with that being said, having a DC is better than having none.
Al 69, imagine if Chow had kept Aranda now one of the best defensive coordinators in the country– his defenses ranked sixth in the country over the last 4 years. Well, looking ahead with Tom Mason and hope he can make us forget Aranda (and Clune and Kaumeyer).

Dennis McKnight? I can visualize him as Special Teams coach. Was on JJ’s staff twice in Hawaii and he is quite a line coach, motivator and colorful guy. I remember ST’s blog entry when the team was on the road and McKnight and DeLaura needed a car to check out a local gym when ST & Ferd walked into the hotel…. 🙂
Downside on McKinight might be his players get injured from his flying chest bumps and congrats thumping as they come off the field after making a great play.

I learned something about football scholarships today when someone posted that Amanda would allow only 25 scholarships – didn’t realize as compliance person she had the final say.
BTW, does her job description entail “screwing the UH athletic program(s)” or helping UH to steer away from “issues” by working with the coaching staff whenever she sees “problems”? I recall the US Army Inspector General focus shifted from “hammer banging on heads” to one of finding “systemic problems/issues” and recommending ways to correct.

25 LOI limit is a NCAA rule, not an Amanda Peterson rule.
if Chow didnt know (in his 4th recruiting season as HC) that hes limited to 25 LOI to be signed for the year and he wasted some of that allotment on non-qualified guys and/or mission kids who arent going to enroll next sememster, thats on him.

It’s a good thing to stay positive. Like I said before I’ve been a Warriors fan since 92. If you can survive the Von Appen year then you can survive anything. But the patience of most of the fan base is either gone or wearing out and you can’t fault them for that. I’ve very happy that recruits are still willing to come here and play for UH despite everything that is going on over the past 3 years. All I’m saying is that they (the Players) deserve better than this, YOU as a loyal Warriors fan deserve better. We complain not because we’re being negative but because we care about this program and the direction it’s heading. That’s what being a fan is all about.

There was no signature of the UH legal department.

Maybe Mason have not set the world on fire at his other stops but there is always the chance that he find his groove here and turn the defense around. At least that is my hope. Maybe at the other places he went, he was a bad fit or he didn’t get the players he wanted or the HC was micromanaging the defense or something like that.
Dave Aranda was a fairly average coach before coming to UH and now is one of the top defensive minds in college football so maybe a lot of small stuff(like a good fit, getting players to play hard for you, and having a HC who let you run the defense) could turn an average DC into a good one.
Mason does have experience in the NCAA, CFL and XFL and have also coached multiple position so he has good football knowledge.
#20 Al. You are absolutely correct. thats what we call today a stupid, overpaid bureaucracy, not a smart one mind u but a stupid one. Thats why UH is all screwed up! They should have runners posted in and around campus so they can run to the next level and have them approve with in hours. Some students would love to have a job like that and at minimum wage at that! Or maybe we should mandate that these so called execs run it up themselves. Should be beneficial for themselves as well the school-should be a prerequisite for those positions that do approvals.

UH legal counsel does the contracts and the language therein – but the people cited by Islandman signs them.
It’s the usual “circle of life” the AD, Chancellor etc usually will assume that it is OK to sign because it was prepared (as a rule) by the UH legal counsel. And if there is a major/minor problem in language that was lacking that would make UH liable, a good attorney for the coach or whoever isn’t going to tell the UH people that they goofed!

83. I think this is a valid point. We, the fans, were here before the current coaches and players and will be here after they are gone. I am generally an optimistic person and don’t enjoy trashing others much. I usually find myself cringing when others partake in this activity. But we do deserve a winning program. There will be down years and most understand this. But this is headed for a down decade and that is very, very destructive for a program. So if there is some negativity about it is not surprising. All I know for sure about coach Chow is that he has been unable to produce a winning football team. A lot of the rest about who he is as a person and as a coach I know nothing about personally. I am guessing that is true of most who trash him. But we can be respectful and still recognize we have a big problem. It’s hard to not have negativity creep in. But, hey, we beat Colorado in the season opener and this will cheer up quickly. All most fans need is some hope that we can win any given game and a team that plays hard even when they lose. This playing hard when we lose is already in place. It is just not enough when the losses are consistently present.

On coaches, is Morrison still at SMU or would he be available as a QB coach? I think Reinhold and McKnight might be two proven and available coaches to assist Chow. McKnight was very much a motivational coach with the special teams at UH.
Is Trifonovich the kid who kicked a 48 yarder in the state championship game vs Mililani? Watching that kid in warm ups and during the game he can hit the end zone on kick offs consistently, no problem.

With the other returning loaded QBs, Tulieta’s chances on the field his coming season tough going. Probably going to have to fight for a spot on the volleyball team to make a mark on campus.

Did you read the total bull he threw out today about what great recruits he secured? Well, that tells all you need to know about his delusional state of mind, as well as others here gloating about the great recruiting class. When you folks come back down to Earth (please bring Tsai with you), take time to read the national ranking services – all of whom puts UH near the bottom. I did a little research on Farris. He’s coming from a small school. As a result, he has the challenge of not having played against stronger opponents like those in the larger and more competitive high school conferences. This means that he has the size and speed that a D-1 coach wants, he doesn’t have the competitive game experience to show his skills off. He might be a project but he does have the physical tools to be recruited. Remember, Bob Wagner told the story of how the coaches had to turn away and laugh the first time they saw walk-on Rich Miano practice, and he went on to a 10-year NFL career.

#126, yeah it’s hard to believe when you’re not on Earth. Say hi to Tsai for me. By the way, when I first started going to games at the Stadium as a UH student, the student sections were near the 50 yard line. Probably before you were born.
Colorado State recruiting ranking plummeted to #119 (247sports) after losing their coach. Considering the coach staffing situation at UH, I am very grateful that students were willing to take a chance with this program. With Ohio St coming in at #6 and Wisconsin at #34 in 2015 recruiting, UH’s #129 would be daunting to most.

#126 Old yobo! I used to go to the Honolulu Stadium when the ILH was both private and local hi schools. I remember all the local books and gamblers used to sit in the Ewa-makai section. Some of the books used to wait across the street when game ended and pay or collect…..The stadium had great boiled peanuts!! Ahh the old days!! UH used to get around 600-1000 per game. Hank Vasconcellos and Jimmy Asato were the coaches during that era and only had few recruits if any. Most were local players. Dave Holmes followed.

There were a few more coaches between Hank Vasconsellos and Dave Holmes. Jimmy Asato, Art Shaughnessy, Phil Sarboe and one more. The first year I started attending UH games, 1967, the head coach was Don King. Dave Holmes followed in 1968. Best athletes I saw at the old termite palace were Oregon’s Bobby Moore (Ahmad Rashad) and Long Beach State’s Leon Burns.
Hatakeman, Leon Burns was an anomaly at the time. Believe he was in his mid to late 20’s when he played at LBSU. If I rcall he spent some time away from home before enrolling in college. A 2nd round draft choice. New Mexico Highlands also had a bunch of refugees from Div 1 schools including a couple who played NFL. I gave away so many chin straps leaving the field after a game I was on watch with George Smith the equipment guy that I would not get another one no matter what–those games were surreal…..huddling in the end zone you were almost in the crowd!
Hiring Richie Rich is not a money thing (I’m just guessing, but he probably pulls something in the low six figures down by the water. The greater issue is his previous relationship with Norm (can they both make amends), does both lower and upper campus have the ability to digest him coming back to the fold, and if from a philosophical (both football and otherwise) standpoint is he symmetrical with the current staff?
I tell you this—if he did come back on board (and I am not saying there is evidence of this–this is mere speculation) it would be a whos-whos of Hawai’i prep football—Uperesa, Naeole, Gouveia, Miano. You know despite the w-l, record, if you were a young guy, and your intentions were the NFL (always a super long shot) those guys represent about 3 dozen years in the NFL–that is compelling.
New to the roster in 2015 4 stars Wittek, Zwahlen, Davis. 3 stars Agasiva, Mautautia, Hensley, Riggins, Williams, Kemal-Kaleiwahea. 2stars Collie, Butler, Lavaka and Borden. 13 ranked. Unbanked Trifinovitch Norman Kauhi, Furota, Williams, Moananu and Harris. Might have missed a name. Trifinovitch first team AA at Chris Sailer camp, Williams first team AA in Jc, Webb ranked #63 in Texas. More additions to come but not so sure that if you use the formulas even skewed to fit our incoming mix it certainly would not be where it is today. So much for those scorecards. Go Warriors!!!! Every day I check the college basketball section on the ESPN website with the hope of not seeing any mention of Hawaii.

I looked at his high school tape. Offensive linemen-LG. On the tape I immediately saw a pulling guard that had at least five pancakes. It looks like the players strength is getting out into open space and knocking players off their feet. That’s what I saw. He would make a great blocking back…possibly another Reagan type. I see RB. I see jersey number 32, 33, 40, 44 not 76.

Here’s a incoming Hawaii recruit that was under evaluated in regards to the star system, recruitment by other schools and definitely under hyped.
First team all-state.
Performed well against other big name players that went onto bigger schools and that had higher star ratings. Saw the players highlights. The knock on this player was that he has to work on his footwork. I say he has good footwork, athleticism, balance, toughness.
He is listed as a 2 star recruit, I think he should have been a 3. The player should be a future starter for the Warriors.

Maddog50, do you remember Richard Boone of “Have Gun Will Travel” as “Paladin” used to stand in line with the crowd to get his ticket? He never used his celebrity status to get in free or to avoid the lines. And yes, I remember the teams from New Mexico Highlands. Good fun. I especially miss the boiled peanuts.
#133, yup UH played after the high school games and hardly anyone stayed. Got cold as heck when it rained and I used to scurried under the bleachers and order hot saimin but the rain water still seeped between the rotten wood planks. We had some great individual talent with players being able to transfer and play without sitting out a year. Dave Holmes could teach Chow how to coach, even from his grave.

The rating services not the endall of evaluation and we did get some good players, but also a lot of projects, and some question marks. The big question is how we stack up against other MWC teams– especially since we are trying to catchup. We need to be better than we were last year, and better than our competition in order to catch up. Where we come up short is comparisons to other MWC which have had great recruiting classes– we come up behind many of the MWC teams, means we will still struggle with depth and talent against the teams we need to beat.

Rick Blangiardi told a story of when he was an assistant at UH. They had enough money to fly up to LA to recruit, but no money to rent a car. He said that the night before they left, a bunch of assistants drove up to Wahiawa and stole some pineapples and brought them with them to LA (lax agricultural rules back then). They went to the car rental counter at LAX and offered the boxes of pineapples in return for a rental for a few days.
