UH lands all-state safety
Campbell High strong-safety Solomon Matautia told the Star-Adveriser/Warrior Beat he will accept a football scholarship from the Warriors. He initially made an oral commitment to Oregon State.

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer:
“I think the culture that Oregon has created is something I’ve studied in great detail, and I say culture because that’s what it is. Ohio State has this culture, and so does Oregon, and so do all the great programs. Programs without culture, that’s when you start to see failure.”

During today’s news conference, Meyer was asked about preparing for Oregon’s tempo.
Oregon coach Mark Helfrich: “Be specific, please.”
Meyer: “Without getting into too much detail — next question.”

Both teams are scheduled to have walk-through sessions at what Meyer calls “Jerry Jones Stadium.”

There was a hold-me-back scuffle when a photographer stood on a chair in the front, blocking the view of other photographers and videographers. They pulled down the photographer. Crabs-in-the-bucket mentality thrives in North Texas, too.

I would agree with Urban Meyer about culture, or the lack of culture. Just look at UH’s empty student section at Aloha Stadium. I wonder what happened.

Nice article by Ferd this morning about Mariota and his place among Hawaii’s great athletes. However, someone needs to remind Mr. Lewis about the accomplishments of BJ Penn and add him to the list of notable Hawaii born athletes (at the end of the article). He has Carissa Moore on the list but not Penn? Come on man!
Kev-1 good point. I would also say that Derek Tatsuno also has a place on that list. Entirely dominated high school baseball, and then had strikeout, wins, win-loss, percentage, records for the NCAA that stood for decades.
While I would not say, single handly, as it was a team effort, he was the marquee player that placed Hawai’i on the map, and a game away from the national championship. Pro career never panned out, but Tats ruled baseball for a decade.

Agreed, you mean Ben Villaflor….my man was quicker than quick. Was he the first world champion boxer from Hawai’i, not sure….

#17 … that sounds great. ESPN stats don’t seem to paint a rosy picture for Hawaii recruiting relative to the MWC, but I have no idea about the accuracy of their information … http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/scorecard/_/class/2015/id/17
With only 2 years of signed recruit data (again, according to ESPN ), it is hard to put much confidence in a trend but it appears that Hawaii’s recruiting competitiveness with respect to rest of the MWC may have declined since 2013.
For 2013, Hawaii was ranked #3 of 9 in the MWC for signed recruits
For 2014, Hawaii was ranked #6 of 11 in the MWC for signed recruits
For 2015, Hawaii is currently ranked #10 of 12 in the MWC for commits

The Head Football coach, some Assistants and Administration has instilled a culture of losing at UH. The football teams revenue has been redirected to the general fund and much needed funds to upkeep facilities have been neglected for years. Of course the debt was forgiven as there wouldn’t have been any deficit if the program received all the revenues they are generating.
The Legislators know this and will not provide additional funding. UH cannot run autonomously any more. The Administration is running amok.

25. I didn’t give Miano enough credit for how Hawaii attracted so many solid walk ons while he was here. Maybe it was just lucky but it seemed like we brought in a lot of good ones. I would def hope Ronald gets offered a walk on spot to go with Piceno, Mamiya, Sharsh, Suapaia, and that Damien WR /TE you mentioned.
