Norm Chow received support from two College Football Hall of Fame coaches this morning.
Lou Holtz and Kansas State coach Bill Snyder, who was inducted this morning, both insisted Chow will build the Warrior program.
“I thought he did a good job this year,” Holtz said.
Snyder was introduced at the news conference as the “architect of the greatest turnaround in the history of college football.” Snyder inherited a program that was winless in the previous 27 games. Snyder said UH also can build.
“You do what you believe in,” Snyder said of his program’s turnaround. “Then you try to impart a value system for young people, the same value system your parents tried to impart on you. Whether it’s hard work or discipline or responsibility or commitment or whatever those things are, they’re all important in how you achieve success.”
He said those values transfer to the football field “and you’re going to try harder and be more committed.”
Snyder said he and Chow have been friends for several decades. “We have a lot of respect for each other,” Snyder said. “We truly do.”
Snyder said he expects “good things will happen” with the Warriors.
Chow went to him advice after taking the UH job in 2011.
“I’d say (to Chow) what Calvin Coolidge said, that, ‘perseverance is a tremendous value to possess.’ However you want to say it, don’t give up, don’t quit, keep on keeping on…those types of things.”
Chow, is 8-29 in three seasons at UH.
Coolidge said, “Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”
In his acceptance speech, Snyder talked of the bleak days in going 1-10 (1989) in his first season with the Wildcats and searching for improvement.
Snyder, who is 187-94-1, had one winning season in his first four years with the Wildcats.
“Perseverence wins an awful lot of battles, it truly does,” Snyder said.
He also urged Chow to remain, “a strong believer in what you believe in.”
Asked to give Ohio State advice on how to stop Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota, Snyder said, “get 14 guys on the field.”

Of course friends of Norm Chow will say good things. Do you expect them to come out and say that he is doing a terrible job and UH is really struggling?
Chances are neither has even seen a UH game in the last several years and have no idea what’s happening besides the record. Holtz’s position has him focused on top 25-ish teams. Not mid-majors.
Sorry to sound so jaded. I’m actually not really. I just take the words of friends so far away from the program with a grain of salt.
Those are interesting comments from Snyder, and he is a chap, of Chow’s age and generation, but moreover, has shown that he can win in a variety of circumstances and decades. When you think about it, most coaches at the D1 level have experienced a high level of success at some other level. That could be from the HS ranks, JC or even the pros, my point being is that there is great parity, for the most part, with most college staffs. Now, there are some programs which just have a super solid staff, but those are both temporal and singular. Coaching is so transient, and everyone is looking for the bigger better program, that it is very difficult to keep staffs together….so, I think, that is where the value system really comes into play.
Many top B schools and airlines (as they are in the business of crisis management and leadership) teach what is known as principled-based decision making. In short, there are 3 features to solid leadership; having defined core values, anticipating the unexpected (to the extent one can) and being able to take criticism in order to improve.
Summarily, strong leadership requires focusing on how to teach people to give and receive feedback, how to listen, or in other words, to be self-critical and reflective. Even leaders who are bright and talented can be ineffectual–common traits with this group of leaders include the following traits: they tend to listen only to the small group surrounding them, they lacked self-awareness, and were arrogant, bordering to institutional closed mindedness—especially as applied to risk (sometimes too much), innovation, and creativity. My posit is if the value system is strong, then you have a much greater opportunity for kids to buy-in into your system. (Chow does any of this apply to you?) Just some things to ponder…

Norm Chow deserves respect for his past accomplishments and I am not surprised that there are many who know him and give him this respect. But at the end of the day this becomes irrelevant to our current circumstance. Norm Chow will be our coach next year and I am approaching the year with an open mind and even some (possibly) foolish optimism. What is most discouraging to me is that coach Chow is supposed to be an offensive guru and our offense has been, well, offensive in its ineptitude. It would make a nice story if we can turn it around next year and this esteemed local boy can become a successful head coach as his career winds down. But if he can’t do it then he can’t do it and all the accolades from afar will not help us to rehab a badly injured football program. It’s now or never coach Chow.
what was the context of them speaking on Chow and/or Hawaii football? did a media member pose some question? or they just went out of their way to praise Chow?

C’Mon coach Chow, don’t disappoint your friends!! It was nice to hear that HOF coaches like coach Holtz and coach Snyder support you!! We need to see some good recruits!! So far, what worries me is the number as well as the quality… only has less than 10 committed and not enough “star” power so far.
Players, if you are good, you get chance to shine in Hawaii, stay on the islands or come to the islands, there’s no place like paradise.
If Chow finds an accurate QB, UH will win more games.
4. Lol. Seriously. No good coach or leader is ever going to say something negative about another coach. I bet Pete Carroll would say the same thing…. Norm is probably chilling in Cali relaxing at home…

14. Gonna need more than that. Leadership lacks, and discipline has lacked from year 1 under Norm. At some point, almost winning a game gets old. What separates good teams from teams like Hawaii is mental toughness and discipline in crunch time. We don’t make the plays when it matters and we don’t put teams away.
Best example I can give is UNLV. Yeah we won.. awesome.. But how do you just get conservative all of a sudden when you have a defense on their heals? Put them away and don’t even let them have a chance to come back. We should have lost that game and to say by winning on the final play that this team has improved is naive.
Until we have a staff that brings a swagger to the team, while playing with discipline and having leadership at key positions, we are going to keep performing below mediocre. It starts with the coaches. Lack of recruiting, ability to teach, etc..
I dunno jeezy, Charlie Weiss always had something stink to say about Pete. Oh, my bad, you did specifically, say, “good coach”.
My theory, is that Pete represented everything that Charlie was not–actually played in college, tall, fit, and a winner on almost every level. So, in form of weird man-crush, he hated Pete for being Pete…but, I digress.
17. 99 times out of a 100, if teams beat writer asks another coach about the coach that writer covers, you won’t hear anything negative… Don’t think I have ever read an article in Hawaii till this day that an opposing coach publicly said a Hawaii coach was terrible and wasn’t going to turn the program around.

Teams use to be more intimidated by us when the players had long hair, now all clean cut and lost the intimidation factor.
I have faith in the UH football program. Even won a lunch last season. 😉
But now I get it. Do we want a $1.2 million payday game or do we want to cancel and need one less win (and probably one less loss) to make it to the Hawaii bowl next season. Tough call considering the financial situation. It appears many people above my pay grade think we have a shot this season.
However Coach Chow does, the only guarantee I expect is that the program has integrity and the athletes will graduate.
Kind statements of support and praise from old colleagues, but pretty lukewarm it seems to build enthusiasm and sell season tickets. Unless coach Chow augments his staff and playbook, the status quo seems almost inevitable. But I will buy my cheap seats and hope to be proven wrong or to see staff/playbook augmentations. Let’s go Bow!
And on the other hand, man, I got to interview the Boz. But he wasn’t the Boz. He was just Brian Bosworth, a more mature, humbled guy.

I heard the Boz is going back to college.
Having a hard time deciding between the Ducks or the Buckeyes. I’m rooting for Mariota and the Ducks, but there’s something about what the Buckeyes have done the last couple of of games, very impressive. Ohio State does very well in the underdog role. Oregon does well as a favorite and had won 9 straight, straight up and ATS and by double digits. In my bones, I think Ohio State will prevail, but in my heart I want Oregon to win. I always remembered what Greg McMackin said to a gathering in 2008 about Hawaii’s trip to Florida. I asked him if he personally knows Urban Meyer? He replied, “yeah, I know him AND I don’t like em!!!” Of course, everybody at the gathering had a good laugh. That fall, Florida kicked our okole. Tebow was playing and even Cam Newton had some playing time who later transferred to Blinn JC and eventually Auburn.
Do you realize that if THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY were to upset Oregon on Monday (and even if they don’t), Hawaii may be playing the #1 team next year!
That’s why I just reserved my Panda Travel package!!!! Niagra Falls, R&R HOF, Pro Football HOF, Tour of the SHOE where Woodie and Archie roamed! CHEEEEE!

I am still very puzzled why a first time HC would hire/promote “grad assistants” and make them assistant coaches who had very limited knowledge/experience is being a coach
as a not so young 2LT, I made sure that I got to know all my tank commanders, and any senior NCO assigned to me so I could pick their brains – they knew I had very little or no experience being a tank platoon leader, but they were willing to impart all their knowledge/experience so we would be the best tank platoon in the US Army – most important person was my platoon SGT, an E6 who help guide me through all inspections and field training including pulling direct maintenance on tanks

With the big game coming on Monday now is the time to remind all the football pundits what it takes to become a major power. Those who expect Hawaii to be one of them is far fetched. HPD has had an impact on our society. Punching out girlfriends in a bar, busting balls in a gambling arcade, stealing mailboxes, bearing ill advised testimony, I am still wanting to know who that HPD officer was that sank the football season. And the Chairman of the Police Commission is saying good job?
Well, tell Lou Holtz and Bill Snyder to volunteer and help Chow and also bring over some of those meat and potato guys. Also, since when a police officer sank the season for UH? Finally, OSU is still playing a freshman QB. They had nothing to lose against Alabama but this is dry mouth time. I think Oregon romp except wont bet the house and lot because they lost a WR as well as a DB earlier. STUFF THAT OSU RUNNING BACK!!!
No what this really means is that people who know coaching support Chow and people that don’t know crap post here
#31 – I’m with you on that. I think a 1st time HC who promotes grad assistants up – all the way up to “OC” even – believes his vast knowledge and experience having seen it all is enough to overcome their inexperience. And it’s much easier to manage the newbies than those who have previously coached in other programs.
Mr. A-House, you answered your own question so I no understand why you no understand 😉 . It’s not like Chow became a head football coach after 30+ years as a basketball coach and then hired nine grad assistants to help him.
To me the biggest disadvantage of having young, very young asst coaches, more recently Grad Assts, is their limited networking connections and credibility when it comes to recruiting. The areas where recruiting is noticeably lacking are in D-Linemen, Quarterbacks and Wide-outs. All areas with first-time asst coaches.
Chow would be a much better coach if he would either change his offense or change the way it is run to emphasize scoring more points rather than possession or field position. Even Timmy Chang or Colt Brennan would not score enought points in Chow’s offense to average the 30-35 points a game we need to win. HE needs to challenge defenses more by running fewer power plays and attacking the defense in multiple ways and take chances to score more than he is doing.

Two impressive wins by the Rainbow Warriors against Ohio St (3-1) and Penn St (3-0). Great atmosphere at SSC both nights and attendance looked pretty good. I think UH could still increase revenues a bit if they added a few more ticket price options. For adults, season ticket prices are either $125.00 or $225.00. Almost doubling the ticket price to get a better seat, seems too big a jump; if you are buying senior or student tickets, the jump is even larger. There seem to be a lot of higher priced seats empty in the center. By converting some of the $225 seats to $150, $175, and $200, I think they could entice some of us cheapskates to pony up a few more bucks.
Coach Chow’s initial lack of position coaches and use of graduate assistants could have been a result of budget limitations, but after 3 years of both dismal on field results and ticket revenues, it just doesn’t make sense to me that both the head coach and the athletic director wouldn’t be demanding that the staff needs to be augmented with more experienced coaches. IMO a lame duck AD is no excuse for lack of change. September 2015 will be here pretty quick, and coach Chow has yet to win against a MWC team with more than 2 conference wins that season.

Masaboy did a Alaska steamed and baked “rock fish” for a family gathering last week – one time through and only the bones were left – steamed one was about 15 #s and baked about 12 #s – he was so lucky last July with 6 or 7 good size rock fish – me, only the little ones – maybe 6-8#s.
still hoping for a 100+ # halibut and 30 # white King salmon

Doesn’t make sense cutting the budget for a program that is struggling and is a main generator of revenue for the athletic department.
I suppose a lot could change during and after the national championship game that could affect Mariota’s decision to forgo his last season in college and opt for the NFL draft. Let’s hope its an easy one.

Just kidding about Mariota, have a good game young man we all hoping the best for our keiki o kaina. As for recruiting, lets go get um! We can do it! Uncle, Aunty…. giv um yo advise, “Good to go away, but no beta feeling den to play at home!!” We get da talent, stay home boys, can be goood fun! aloha!
