Shake on it
Several Florida State football players could learn the aloha spirit from UH sports teams.
After each home game, the UH basketball and volleyball teams shake hands or fist-bump opposing players, then circle the court to do the same with fans. The Warriors will gather in front of the band for the alma mater. (Even when UH and Cincinnati players fought several years ago, they at least did it during the hand-shake line.)
Post-event rituals are just good manners, from tee ball to makule softball (with the unique route of congratulating the other team and then circling around to congratulate teammates).
Of course, it’s not a requirement. In pro baseball, the winning team celebrates on the field; the losers scamper to the locker room. In the NBA, the losing players don’t stick around for the presentation of the O’Brien Trophy, even if its on the losing team’s home court. Then again, there are no rules about taking off caps during the national anthem. It’s about respect — for one’s self and for others.

Yes, it’s all about respect and much of the responsibility for enforcing those things falls on the coaching staff.
What time does Hawaii football play? Oh that’s right! Chow has not taken his football team to a bowl game in three years! He’s about to make it four.

5. It’s the Hawaii biased.. happens with every sport. Oregon has Hawaii players, there fore classy team after a win.

The Sugar Bowl year he wasn’t very high on UH until after the Boise game.

Ferd Lewis’ column, “Chow’s 2015 resolutions: Be less grumpy, win more” was pretty funny, but “A Christmas Carol” would be a good setting too. Or Oliver Twist with Jordan Wynn (or the fans) as Oliver … “please, sir, I want some more … passing plays”.
I agree with #12, although I don’t think it was a “cause & effect” deal…One classless act deserves another. However, I do think that the FSU coaching class should have prompted their players to participate in the post-game handshakes. That’s a sign of both poor coaching and poor sportsmanship. At least, Oregon is taking action on those players who partaked in the “no-means-no” chant.
Did anyone see Winston “going off” in a very animated argument with his Head Coach (Jimbo Fisher?) on the sidelines? I would think in college, that the players should respect or defer to the coach…Looks like Winston didn’t care since he’s gone after this year. I don’t know if any NFL team needs another “head-case” for a QB after Cleveland’s experiences with Manziel.
For the most part, all of us have sum bias…n being born or raised in Hawaii helps support that bias….so can understand al’s remark…
Me thinks maybe cuz we are from Hawaii… we just have a tendency to ‘pull’ for the home team or athlete would be natural thing to do….from Ms. America to ne other competition…is good.
Like when Trias was needing our support….we all pulled together…and gave her our kokua…
Some writers are very blatant in their writing n reporting…read sum where that a certain QB is a better pick in the draft cuz he ‘consoled’ his running back cause he fumbled…go figga…guess to him that is the most important criteria to use when picking a # 1 pick of a QB in the draft…

Herbstreit played for Ohio St.. obviously not. But when you point out 1 team having no class and ignoring another, there’s clearly a bias.
16. They weren’t faster. They were more physical at the line of scrimmage. Runs up the middle opened everything up. FSU got gassed and quit in 2nd half.
Aloha All! MM looked real good last night, certainly out shined last years Heisman. Two interesting questions loom: will he adapt and evolve from the spread offense (recent history has not been so kind to spread QBs in the NFL) and whether he can be a much more technically sound passer. One thing for sure–it’s going to be really fun watching him the next several years…..
19. I wouldn’t go that far. Most NFL scouts were more impressed with the throws JW made. Mariota missed a lot of open throws down field. Mariota had a good game, but it was within the scheme. Lot of side line dump off throws to get WRs the ball in space. Big difference in the game was Oregon tempo, run game and turnovers. JW played great. If only his players would hold on to the ball. If you’re watching the game from a NFL stand point, Mariota played a lot like Kaepernick. How it translates to NFL is a mystery that will be determined.

What is really sad is how FSU’s support for Jameis will dwindle now that the game is over and he has outlasted his usefulness to the school. Let’s see if FSU and Jimbo especially, continue to give him all their support.

I will concede that from a perspective of “NFL ready”, JW is more ready. That said, MM, if I’m placing the name of my franchise with a guy that has been investigated no fewer than 3 times in his short college stay–I don’t pull the trigger. He is obviously immature, and that places it mildly.
The question that is then put center–is who hasthe most upside–and how long does that take?? I can’t answer that question, but I wouldn’t place one of the top 4-5 picks on the guy. Played great–I wouldn’t say that–ball security was questionable and well, a W lacking.
All the top four teams, Oregon, FSU, Ohio St. and Alabama, had strong passing attacks (and running too) . They throw on first downs too.
Regarding the national anthem, are you supposed to look at the flag, look up or can you bow your head down as if praying ?
If we had the BCS system, would Oregon and Ohio State be in the championship game? It might have been Alabama vs. Florida State. Ohio State and Oregon would not have been in it. It will be Ohio State’s spread offense vs Oregon’s spread offense.
Get lolos on every team. After watching game I think that they got the Heisman right. Marcus can be Marcus and grow into a good NFL quarterback. He is quicker and a better passer than CK. Winston no can be Winston in the NFL and be successful.

Calvin Chai, former head football coach and Athletic Director at Kamehameha School, passed away on Dec 14. He had retired in 1986 , per obit. notice.
Rest in Pease Coach Chai, a teriffic coach for the great Kamehamenha teams in the 70’s.
Strong wind and heavy rains out east.
Never met Mr. Chai in person, but watched him play softball many times inm Honokaa at the annual tournament there…Sorry to see his passing…..

In regards to Calvin Chai–he coached at a time when Kings were still Kings–and his was the tenure of a dynasty. The guys he coached are legend in Hawai’i football lore: David Hughes, Kani Kauhi, Casey Kunitomo, Blaine Gaison, Keoni Jardine, the M & M boys, our own Kifi, Boyd, John Haina, Kaulana Park, to name a few–still ring out!

Looking forward to another season of Hawaii football. Good Job Coach Norm Chow trying to squeeze blood out of a turnip. Even if every single top high school recruit stayed in Hawaii to play where are all the scholarships coming from. Unless you were deaf, dumb and stupid you could see the quality of play and depth on New Years Day. Third string QB in only his third game of the season beating Alabama? We need to be realistic and stop asking for something we won’t get.
