Seeking paradise

On the last day of UH’s fall semester, the Warriors continue to receive inquiries from Division I players seeking to transfer to the Manoa campus this coming year.

It’s not always an easy process. Applications need to be filed and accepted, and such. Of note, because a player has to initiate contact, it shows UH is still an attractive destination.

The Warriors have been open to accepting transfers, most recently quarterbacks Sean Schroeder and Max Wittek, slotback Quinton Pedroza, tight ends Jordan Pu‘u-Robinson and Ryan Hall, linebacker Jeremy Castro, and safety Taz Stevenson.

  3. truegreen December 19, 2014 8:34 am

First! Looking forward to seeing what transpires with the transfers. Maybe even a coach from Dallas could “transfer” back as head coach, AD, or at least OC. Would even take “hidden” OC…

  4. jimmy the lock December 19, 2014 8:37 am

    Seeking playing time.

  5. jimmy the lock December 19, 2014 8:38 am

Where else can you be a bench player and end up being a starter? yeah, yeah, just being silly.

  6. jimmy the lock December 19, 2014 8:41 am

Seeing that mini drone ad on the blog I wonder if anyone would launch a drone from the parking lot and fly it over the football field while the game is in progress. The security would not know where it came from. Can’t wait to see that happen next season.

  7. jimmy the lock December 19, 2014 8:52 am

    Good morning Diogenes.

  8. Stephen Tsai December 19, 2014 8:56 am

Wasn’t Amazon supposed to use drones to deliver packages in cities?

Some transfer D-lineman would be awesome

drones? drones? What do drones have to do with the Warrior blog? Keep to point.

  12. gigi-hawaii December 19, 2014 9:13 am

Just be grateful that your home hasn’t burned down like the one across the street from us.

I am glad that students are still interested in joining the UH football team.

  13. BTO December 19, 2014 9:32 am

Blue Chip Recruits, JC Transfers, DI Transfers, whatever it takes to win we’ll take um!! This will be Norm Chow’s fourth year. His first two recruiting classes should be the nucleus of next years team! Of course majority of his recruits white shirt their first two years for mission ministry.

  14. TOM December 19, 2014 9:32 am

    STEPHEN: #8

There was a story about one-hour delivery in NYC (Manhatten) by Amazon. How Amazon can do that is something else – some of the merchandise seems to come out of KY and elsewhere.

  15. jimmy the lock December 19, 2014 9:33 am

Drones are best used for delivering missiles.

beans, keep to point? Blog never did and never will. That’s just how it is.

  16. Stephen Tsai December 19, 2014 9:34 am

I’ve heard of gray shirts, red shirts and blue shirts.
First time I heard the phrase white shirts.

  17. letsgowarriors December 19, 2014 9:37 am

HAHA. white shirts, that’s a good one!

  18. jimmy the lock December 19, 2014 9:40 am

“Just be grateful that your home hasn’t burned down like the one across the street from us.”

Sheesh, gigi-hawaii, kinda insensitive don’t you think? Why don’t you just go across the street and tell them, “I’m grateful, it wasn’t my house that burned down, and oh yeah, Merry Christmas.” 🙄

  19. Da Punchbowl Kid December 19, 2014 9:43 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 😉

Here’s wishing Santa gives UH Football some prized recruits and transfers! And we’d also like to see that Coach formerly of Dallas back in the saddle somewhere around the UH Athletics Department…

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  20. Da Punchbowl Kid December 19, 2014 9:49 am

“White Shirts”… and so it was that a sports writer from a tiny island in the Pacific Ocean coined a new phrase in the world of college football. 😆

  21. jimmy the lock December 19, 2014 10:14 am

The term “white shirts” gives the impression of surrendering.

  22. letsgowarriors December 19, 2014 10:15 am

so depressing to see all these other schools get commits and mid-year signings and we’re basically on mute. Chow hasnt even publicly let go of any of our coaches.

  23. jeezy33 December 19, 2014 10:16 am

Just got done listening to Artie Wilson show. I’m so tired of June Jones talk already.. his run and shoot is now out dated and he’s a sick man… I wanted to hurl listening to Artie defend his friend when the caller was being real saying we don’t need a quitter at Hawaii.. Jones is a scum and wish the fans knew his true colors

  24. SteveM December 19, 2014 10:16 am

I am not a June Jones fan however “Scum” is pretty strong. No need.

  26. letsgowarriors December 19, 2014 10:23 am

the least Chow could do is talk about Russell Williams, Sione Kauhi and Dylan Collie (assuming he signed a financial aid agreement).

  27. jeezy33 December 19, 2014 10:45 am

    23. The least our coaches can do is wake up from the 90s and use Twitter as a recruiting tool. At the very least to monitor how mature kids are. Wynn probably only coach that goes on Twitter but uses it to talk sons of anarchy.. (great show)

  28. letsgowarriors December 19, 2014 10:47 am

good thing the series is over then, now he has more time on his hands to do actual football work

  29. A-House December 19, 2014 10:49 am

with the “public” backing from the “acting” chancellor, Chow must feel empowered and so far has decided to keep his young stable at QB/OC and WR coaches

if otherwise, let the fans know what is going on so we may see a “ray of hope” – very dim, but a ray of hope!!!

  30. Da Punchbowl Kid December 19, 2014 10:51 am

A man who brought more success to Hawaii football than anyone and he is somehow “scum”? SMH.

    Look and listen.

  31. Da Punchbowl Kid December 19, 2014 11:19 am

    Jeezy –

You can find fault in any man’s life – maybe even your own. I am not going to judge Jone’s as you do. I simply think it’s better to look at the whole person both good and bad. Its just sad that you disparage Artie Wilson, June Jones and the Leaheys by association. There are two sides to every story. There is good and bad in every man.
There is no need to call anybody scum. As you judge, so are you judged.

  32. islandman December 19, 2014 11:22 am

  34. boolakanaka December 19, 2014 11:36 am

With all due respect, rumors and innuendos about JJ are just that–they may be true, and they may be not. That said, SB nation, is hardly some bastion of journalistic integrity, and in fact, it is as advertised–a online sports media brand.

This is not the New York Time or the Economist, that has both full scale fact checking department and upper margin of editorial review and to boot legal departments to temper and moderate its writers. Rather, they (SBnation) cull and post articles from across the internet-thus, if we are to subscribe to the adage ” judge the source”, I will do so with a fair amount of skepticism as applied to SBnation and some of its content.

  35. dannyp December 19, 2014 11:42 am

First we lose out on Kanawai Noa and now we lose Kyle Sweet to Wazzu. Luke Matthews needs to step it up.

  36. Tempmanoa December 19, 2014 11:45 am

Jeezy33 #32, the things in that article are all “internet rumors”. A private investigator volunteering his time, traced the source of the rumors to a website started by a disgruntled professor who was campaigning to abolish football. The professor also attacked several other public figures. He was challenged to come up with proof or any evidence of truth and he was unable he said because “the newspapers were covering it up.” He has left Hawaii I believe. Kahumoku has had a tragic history with her current husband of four premature births and has lost all of those children, it is terrible to have her name dragged into this.

  37. papajoe December 19, 2014 11:51 am

I too wouldn’t publicly call a man scum, but yes, I am over JJ.
I don’t have much information about who should be the next Athletic Director but I personally think that since UH is largely dependent on football to support all the other programs, I think the next AD should have some background in football. It could a former football player who went on to coaching, or a former coach that has experience in the business world. Having “local” knowlege is a plus, but not necessary, as I wouldn’t want somebody that will just folllow the current “system” that doesn’t seem to be working. Sam Moku or Rick B. comes to mind, but I’m sure there are others out there. JMHO

  38. islandman December 19, 2014 12:20 pm

    35. letsgowarriors– Headline says 24 to graduate. Is one name missing ? From article today:
Here are the UH football graduates: Quarterbacks Taylor Graham and Jeremy Higgins; offensive linemen Kody Afusia, Dave Lefotu, Frank Loyd Jr., and Sean Shigematsu; fullbacks Joey Iosefa, Elisara and Marcus Langkilde; tight end Jordan Pu‘u-Robinson; slotback Kana Silva; defensive ends Nick Childs, Marcus Malepeai and Beau Yap; defensive tackle Josh Manupuna; nose tackles Calen Friel and Moses Samia; linebackers TJ Taimatuia; cornerbacks Grimes, Dee Maggitt, and Daniel Masifilo; safety Michael Martin, and kicker Tyler Hadden.

  39. 3-Prong December 19, 2014 12:22 pm

Lots of “smoke” on JJ and there may be some “fire” behind it but to me its speculation. I do know he wins and has innovative ideas. For now Norm is the man. But if not Norm, give me JJ anyday!

thanks for the lively up-dates on a past accident…
4 me.. if a accident nearly took his life…n sumone else was in said vehicle…can literally walk away… without a scratch is unlikely…passer-by’s…i am sure stopped.. to help as the first at the scene…before the cops arrived…the ambulance paramedics… the tow truck driver…etc…highly likely had a passenger…but strange things do happen… but if there was a 2nd person in vehicle…surely need not take a private investigator to check it out…sumone called 911…unless a cop was driving behind him…to many people involved to make it hush hush…

    that insurance story circulated is just that.. circulated… n 4 me…zero credibility…
the police report is ‘public record’ …what did it say….he was alone or not ?

I was on the freeway the day of JJ’s crash and even saw him pass me at one point. Moments later I drove past the site of his crash right into a huge pylon used to support part of the freeway. When I saw him pass me, with my own two eyes, he was alone. When I asked the HPD officer directing traffic past the wreck site he said JJ was involved in an accident – alone. I believe HPD and what I saw with my own two eyes.

  45. Come on, Man! December 19, 2014 1:32 pm

Long time lurker, here. I just wanted to say that sometimes Jeezy says interesting things. Sometimes he says very stupid things. And sometimes he says very strange things but says them with the conviction of a man who is trying to convince everyone that his way (and only his way) of viewing the world is the only truth out there.

In regards to the June Jones thing, I want to say a few things.

    1. People who are castigating June Jones for being a quitter need to understand that this is college football. College coaches almost always leave the schools they are at eventually, either because they’re fired, they resign, or they move on to bigger and better things (a bigger school, more money, move on to the NFL). This is especially true for mid major schools like UH. Any up and coming coach who experiences any degree of success at a mid major school will probably end up leaving for greener pastures eventually. Dick Tomey did it. June Jones did it. Chris Petersen did it. etc.

This isn’t some kind of character flaw. It’s just business. Get used to it. The next competent coach Hawaii gets (especially if he’s a young up and comer) will most likely leave after 5 years or so to coach in the big leagues. That’s college football. The coaching carousel will always keep spinning.

You guys should be THANKFUL that june jones stayed for 8 years and brought UH the level of success that it enjoyed during his tenure. The man is a coaching genius and very good at marketing. He’s brought more national exposure than any other coach in UH history. He then left for a better situation at SMU. Tried to leave there for an ASU gig which didn’t fall through and then resigned from SMU.

And that’s okay. That’s the nature of the business. SMU should be extremely grateful for all he did to turn that program around too. They haven’t experienced that degree of success since the death penalty. So please, get off the man’s back.

    2. As far as jeezy calling June Jones “scum” and how he wants to “hurl” every time he hears artie wilson defending his friend, come on, man. Jeezy, I doubt that you know June Jones personally or know who he is a person. but you’re using internet rumors and unconfirmed reports to paint him as “scum”?

    You’re better than that.

I have no idea if June Jones is the worst scumbag on the planet or an amazing person, but realize this: when you win, nobody cares about your character issues (unless they’re really big). But when you lose, then watch out.

A Public Policy Polling Survey showed Jesus Christ to have a 10% unfavorable rating proving anyone in the public spotlight including Jesus has detractors. What we need to ask ourselves is how much good have we brought to the University of Hawaii and the State of Hawaii compared to June Jones.

  52. cocobean December 19, 2014 2:15 pm

Every year the issue of student fees are brought up. Every year i give my same opinion. Raise the fee beginning in the Fall semester. Grandfather in all current students to pay the original fee as long as they are continuously enrolled. CC students should have the option to pay the fee or not.

  53. jeezy33 December 19, 2014 2:27 pm

JJ is the greatest! Most loyal guy on earth

  54. Boolakanaka December 19, 2014 2:42 pm

Bottom line, this is a football blog– judged fairly against any of the coaches in the great football genealogy of UH–JJ, by a large margin, is the best coach we have enjoyed.

This talk about loyalty needs to be objectively viewed–Tomey, who created and steered the great rise of the program, someone who I played for–left the program–but, not such acerbic was not attached to him. The fact is, most football marriages do not have happy endings–no real story–just the nature of the beast. So, get off JJ’s nut sack. He came, he won a bunch of games, told the administration what it would take for him to stay, and then when they cajoled, he left for someone who meet some of his financial criteria. Happens every day, in almost profession….

I could tell you stories about several other coaches in our history and some of their “behind the scene” adventures–just a different time–and such things were not reported in the public press. This is not the gate to Heaven and we are not the angel Michael….so relax.

Sure off-field behavior matters–you steal something, you assualt someone, you conspire to overthrow our democracy–then you should be on the outs.

However, when we have behavior among consenting adults that is based, on the very best, just supposition and innuendo–well, then we have traversed officially into what’s known as gossip. People’s relationships are their own–what we speculate from the outside is just a whisper of what actually might be going on–and moverover–it’s none of our business. You want to judge, go to law school, buy a robe and gavel and have at it….

    #23 Jeezy33

I have to agree with you on JJ… He quits on his teams when he doesn’t do well. Like I said before years ago. Before he left I didn’t like JJ recruiting class like he wasn’t pushing his coaches to recruit good. I knew he was leaving soon and I mentioned it to people but no one agreed. I saw a lack of talent coming in three years before he left in 2007 after that sugar bowl year. He knew it would be hard press to win in 08 so he left to SMU. If he didn’t leave on that high of a BCS game no one would’ve offered him the following year. He quit UH in 2007, he quit on SMU in 2014. Why do people want a guy who quits on the university and the football team. Not mention the dirty secrets that happened when he was here.

  86. Jiminy cricket December 19, 2014 6:52 pm

I guess Jeezy and Abunai know everything about June Jones and everything they post is fact? Real sad.

If you want to know the real June Jones, why don’t you talk to his pastor instead of spewing false rumors. Truth of the matter is after Jones got into his car accident, he approached the team chaplain and asked him for help to get his life right with God. His life and perspective changed; before the accident Jones had “I” trouble. Everything was about him. After many months with chaplain, he began to see things differently. June Jones before he accident and is a different person from June Jones after the accident. Ask his pastor.

Many rumors about Jones are totally false. Too bad Jeezy that you bought them hook line and sinker.

Let’s talk about a more interesting subject, Warrior volleyball, shall we? Any guesses on the starting lineup? I think it’ll be Averill, Zarkovic, Sedore, Kanetake/Komo. Not sure about the other MB and OH

  95. kapakahi December 19, 2014 9:45 pm

    ST,

    Know the latest with Afalava?

  96. gobows December 19, 2014 9:46 pm

Thanks ST for saying that. The rumors are so very strong now that the damage is done. I hear it from alot of people and they are convinced its true. Im a big time JJ and run n shoot fan. But I did those rumors because it was so wide spread. Now I believe what ST says.

    Thanks again ST.

Oops, forgot about setter. Think Charlie Wade will experiment with lineups for the first few games. It will come down to who’s playing well and who we’re playing.

    S – Franciscovic, Jones
    OH – Fey, Mol, McKellan
    MB – Holt, Radner

  99. beans December 19, 2014 9:57 pm

    Damn those drones!
ST. You stepped in as you should have, knowing the FACTS.
Now may we all go back to having a great graduation and a Merry Christmas!
    For tomorrow is another day…………(;-)

  100. SteveM December 19, 2014 10:49 pm

I haven’t seen ST get so irritated about jackass comments since the Herman Frazier issues of 2007.

Relax ST — save yourself stress and just smile and shake your head as you make liberal use of your “delete” key. You should, however, remind everyone about your rule that says “Complaints about being deleted will also be deleted.”.

Also, if I post and say the same thing over and over on the same day, it must be a mental glitch/poor memory so please delete my repeat comments. Mahalo.

  101. turfwar December 19, 2014 11:05 pm

Even during the recruiting “dead period” and we again have no bowl game to look forward to this is still a great blog! Thanks ST.

  102. SteveM December 19, 2014 11:16 pm

Too lazy to search the archives, this is what I remember in 2007…

Athletic Director Herman Frazier was making complaints and accusing ST of fomenting the uncomplimentary things being said about him on The Warrior Beat blog. Of course, Frazier claimed never to read the blog when challenged on exactly what.

In any event, ST was taking heat from his editors over Frazier’s public complaints. The “Fire Frazier” issue persisted for months. Hmmm, sounds familiar. It was nothing that ST wrote–it was the comments of the bloggers that angered the A.D. who supposedly didn’t read the blog. Finally, one evening ST challenged the bloggers to personally call him at the office and tell him their complaints personally and give reasons/sources. ST stayed in the office until 11:00 pm waiting for calls and reminded us he’s waiting every 15 minutes. He reported no calls and promised to delete any Frazier comments made later that night.

Elements of Run and Shoot offense with commitment to inside/outside zone & read option/some power is the current trend, June Jones style of Run & Shoot outdated.

  109. A-House December 20, 2014 7:37 am

    jm:

does your list contain the top 3 recruits from the US 18 and under national team or are they projected for 2016?

like Charlie mentioned, getting one is great, but for him to get 3 is unheard of – excellent recruiting Coach!!!

  110. A-House December 20, 2014 7:40 am

if my comment is “awaiting moderation”, why does it appear on this blog?

shouldn’t it be unposted? hey guys, like my unposted word? well, gotta start somewhere for the dictionary to grow!!!

besides, David Fangupo, hope you are able to complete your AA degree and join the Rainbows in January!!!!!!!!! can see you dominating at NG for UH!!!

  111. A-House December 20, 2014 7:41 am

there is a moderater (new word) somewhere who does not like what I post!

    this will surely be moderated!!!!

    Cpop:

your #109 – may be true, but it may have been the “genisus” of the current spread offense used by so many college and pro teams

spelling is my strongest point – ha!

  113. Old School Dave December 20, 2014 8:01 am

I’ll probably take hits for this (sorry, Leaheys, sorry Artie Wilson, sorry June Jones fans), but I think that you’re only as good as your last job. Jones did some great things at UH, but I really felt sorry watching his SMU players get killed week after week this past season.

For the lay person, slander may seem a very straight-forward process–in short, it is not. Now, when you couple that with being a public figure, it becomes, legally, a very difficult thing to prove.

In short, public figures have a more difficult time proving their respective case. In short, it is understood to take some risk in being before the public eye and many of them profit by their public persona. Thus, they must prove that the party defaming them knew the statements were false, made them with actual malice, or was negligent in saying or writing them. Proving these elements can be an uphill battle.

What most are not also including in their fairly small minded thinking on all this is the 3rd party that keeps on being mentioned, is now, over and over, indicted and marginalized by this incessant gossiping. Whether is happened or not, whether it was right or wrong. For that sole reason folks should just stop. JJ is not a choirboy, but further he is a big boy that can handle himself–but this other party-neither has the resources or platform for such a campaign…..they don’t deserved to be conflated with innuendo for curious minds. Let’s be adults and respective to that party….

  116. Boolakanaka December 20, 2014 8:20 am

3 prong dat helmet explains a lot of things–eg memory loss and bad decision making—heheheh-wink!

  117. kev-1 December 20, 2014 8:29 am

Looks like its MWC day for bowl games. Nevada trying to get back in it right now against Louisiana Lafayette.

Might as well cheer for the conference. Go Nevada!

  118. kev-1 December 20, 2014 8:33 am

I have lots of respect for certain people’s football posts here. But no need spread JJ gossip. Those rumors are so old already. It is so easy to put together different story lines regarding the people involved into one false narrative.

2014 already. If people want to spread scandalous rumors, at least make them about people that are relevant.

And did I hear someone say “talk about something more interesting . . . mens volleyball?” Sorry, that hasn’t been interesting in years.

  119. Willie December 20, 2014 8:39 am

#114, take a look at UL L defensive scheme; they maintain discipline and keep Fajardo in the pocket. Like when UH kept Kapernick contained.

Guess this would have kept Fajardo in check when he romped at Aloha Stadium this year? Remember the series at the end of the 1st half when he ran wild for about 6 or 7 times in a row.

“you can’t erase telltale mileage off a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder by jacking up the car and running it in reverse”

Unfortunately, untruths have a life of their own.
