LB Williams makes it official
Linebacker Russell Williams Jr. of Sacramento City College made his UH commitment official when he signed a letter of intent this morning, according to his guardian, Greg LeCount.
Williams’ signing will be the Warriors’ only one today, the first day mid-year recruits may put their commitments in writing. He joins the Warriors in January.
Slotback Dylan Collie, who completes a two-year church mission tomorrow, and defensive end/tight end Sione Kauhi, who signed a scholarship agreement last week, also will join the Warriors next month.
Three players who gray-shirted this fall — running back D.J. Riggins, linebacker Dayton Furuta and safety/linebacker Manly “Pumba” Williams — also become Warriors in January.
If you’re keeping track, UH’s defense will have Jerrol Garcia-Williams, Lance Williams, Russell Williams Jr., and Pumba Williams.

Pretty uneventful mid year signing day. I was kind of hoping to land a Nose Tackle or a big time safety/corner, and a RB that can add a different element to the offense. We are missing what Alex Green and Nate Ilaoa brought in their day.
6.. that is a very true statement. It also requires that the coach having enough say to hire who he thinks is best. In many cases, it gets political and the power players want their favorites to be hired, which may or may not be a good fit with the new head coach.
Hopefully the O-line will give Wittek enough time to throw, at least he’ll have some seasoned receivers to throw to. We’re going to need a big blahlah in the middle for nose tackle next year.

Looks like the defense is reloading– and Clune might have a “Williams package” defensive scheme soon? 🙂
The last 2-3 games gives promise to the coming season. Not because of new-found recruits or transfers, but because there seemed to be a shift in the offensive game plan. No longer did it seem it was Joey toting the ball 25-30 times a game, but a more open offense that pushed vertically and with QB roll-outs including QB-keepers. That was mixed with a running attack that tested the perimeter. So it leaves hope on the offensive side for next season. Focus and concern turns to the defense where there is a big gap in the interior line; secondary corners are thin; and its a wait-and-see about the outside linebackers to contain the perimeter.
We know our great state is loaded with D1 talent. We know this because USC, UCLA, Texas, UW, Oregon, and many other great programs come here every year to recruit our kids.
Yet, despite this fact, I am puzzled why UH seems to think it must recruit kids from the mainland in order to field a good team. No problem with kids from the mainland. Am just a believer that we have all the talent we need right here to field an awesome and winning team, supplemented by a few players from the mainland and elsewhere.
Not that excited about today’s news.
Will be excited when the news reports we grabbed more of the local kids. We have lots of great LBs, QBs, linemen, receivers, and kickers, right here, in Hawaii nei. Offer them first. If they no like, then offer the guys from the mainland.

We also know norm does not know how to adjust on the fly. Look at seasons one through three.
We had the talent to win. What we lacked was a coach who was good at evaluating talent, planning a winning strategy, and executing on that game plan and strategy.
Tomey would have won with the talent we had these past three years. Price would have won too. Norm, sadly, just doesn’t know how to win.

Nevada is going to be awful next year…. I would not count that as a loss. Polian is a horrible HC and he has ruined what Chris Ault built. He is doing what Mack did with Hawaii. The product will reflect it now that Fajardo is gone…

Question- How can a team that did pretty decent in 2014, return at least 15-17 of those key players in 2015, has a good foundation of experienced/developing players, be projected by “pooper” as Nevada is going to be awful next season. Silly. Furthermore in 2 season at Nevada, Polian is 11-13; takes his team to a bowl game his second season (including 4 losses that could have gone either way)…and has seen his offense improve from his first year to second-26.9 to 31.3 points per game and defense improve from giving up 34.4 to 28.2 points per game. Is Polian horrible HC as “pooper wrote?” No. One can prove 12 ways under the sun that Nevada and Polian are on the rise (the facts speak for themselves)-one can see the trajectory-…and development (17 freshmen gaining starts this past season) . Nevada has it going. Pooper? Never mind.

I’m with Jeezy, the corner play is still a sore point, and with Taz gone (who was one consistent force in the D backfield), I am still very concerned about the over-abundance of big plays given-up literally in every game by our corners.
I think that maybe putting Kennedy Tulimaseali’i outside in a 7 technique like U-Dub did with Hau’oli Kikaha may work for them due to his speed. Than they can bring in the Big Boy’s to clog the “A” gaps and defend the stretch cut back’s as long as they can run side to side and fight to pressure. Just thought?

22. Since when do I ever listen to others??? I watch more games than anyone on this blog. (probably because I gamble) I can careless how many starters Nevada has returning. If you watched their games, the only reason they won in conference was because of Fajardo ability to make plays with his feet. That O line is as bad as it gets in the conference. So they may return a bad O line, doesn’t make them a good one. Matt Galas was Nevadas best Linemen and he is gone. They signed a JC kid today because they have issues at depth there.
What exactly did Tyler Stewart do that causes anyone to be concerned? You do realize Nevada was the clear cut choice to win the division. So while you’re hyping their winning season like its something to be proud of, most Nevada fans are disappointed. The RBs returning aren’t even good….
24. Stupid coaching to be honest. His visit was scheduled for January or something. So coaches probably were unsure of RB need. But obviously a mid year kid is going to want to enroll in Jan and compete in spring ball. So that bumps Hawaii out the picture.

When you face Ajayi, Pumphrey, Chase Price, Lajuan Hunt, Brian Hill, Shaun Wick and look at what we have, then obviously you can’t help them see the light…. I think Reardon is the only writer to have bought into the hype and voted Iosefa pre season 1st team….
23. I am hoping Mulanga develops in redshirt year and Daniel Lewis can improve. Marrell Jackson started playing better late in year. There is hope…. I’m on the opposite end with Taz. He got burned in coverage too much for me. He lead the team in tackles but when teams are attacking you in the air and you are allowing completions, getting the tackle is always a great thing. He did make plays vs the run but he was too easily beat in coverage. We did miss out on Derron Brown. He signed with Cal today over us.
Hate to see Tulimasealii used at nose tackle– really want him to be at a defensive end spot– plus he is a little “small” for a nose tackle. Cune may want to rotate inside to rush and not run stop and fight double teams– but keep him coming against one on one blocks and jumping the QB. Moses Samia will be hard to replace– JC guys needed urgently.

QB- Wittek only 1 more year, Zwahlen hasn’t played in 2 years. Reilly unproven, Milton commit only so far, and Woolsey only QB with game experience. But I don’t think we r targeting any QBs.
RB- very thing here. No explosive guys on depth chart.
WR- No one that can threaten the seam or challenge safeties. Stubblefield will be a big upgrade but again “DEPTH” Too big a drop off from 1st string to 2nd.
TE- just get rid of it.(wishful thinking) More running room by spacing out and having defense play Nickel and Dime. (Alex Green)
DL- very obvious
LBs- Russell Williams should add some depth. Very evident in drop off after Gener and JGW. Mageo needs to bulk up and maybe he can compete next year.
DBs- huge issue. Never seen a Hawaii team get burned deep so often. I trust 1 guy in our secondary. Trayvon Henderson. I’m pulling for Mulanga.

Dick Tomey used to tell us that to make a running play go, the front 5 guys need to be perfect and together in their timing, reads, and blocking– one player off and the play is stopped. Especially with zone blocking– one player off and it breaks down or the blockers literally run into each other. Takes two years together to get a championship offensive line. We lose starters and depth off the offensive line and this will hurt the offense more than any other position. This means our offense will lag last year’s offense, but should pick up toward the end of the season.
remember that #1 allowed 7 or 8 of the 10 long passes for TD in 2014 – 2 came is the same game – forgot which team we were playing

I like our young dbs. Especially JJ and NN. I would move #1 to lb or rover. He has struggled a bit one on one but I like how he attacks at the line of scrimmage. Better speed at wr would help develop our dbs. I think our wr corp will be better next season.
We also need speed at linebacker.
Temomanoa, you bring up a good point. The O-line needs seasoning to be on the same page and to execute their assignments consistently. But in the case of UH’s O-line, there are players outside of the returning starters that have playing experience. Center is probably the most critical with the graduation of Kody Afusia, but Brendan Urban filled in very well while Kody was recuperating from injury. He must have started 7-8 games. I also read (HWW-ST Blog) that John Wa’a is being tried in that position as well. The other O-line position is right tackle with the graduation of Sean Shigematsu. I don’t know who will be his replacement. Maybe R J Hollis or Leo Koloamatangi. Both are juniors and have seen ample playing time. For sure the O-line will struggle against Ohio St and Wisconsin, but I think they will be ready for conference play.
Only one signing? A guy from junior varsity that no other respectable Div. 1 school is interested in? No other skill position players in sight? This is what happens when a loser head coach who has no legitimate reason to still be the head coach at UH is retained because of spineless Ben Jay.
Improve the line on both sides of the ball and everything else will improve…I think we could use another “gamebreaker” type of running back and another QB who can start immediately should Wittek falter. I don’t see Woolsey being anything more than a back-up…If Woolsey ends up starting QB, we’ll be in for a long season again.
On the coaching front, Chow needs to replace the Receivers and OC and get experienced coaches…We gotta “coach up” if we expect to improve.

I’d have to disagree with some of your analysis in 34.
QB- You’re spot on with this. Wittek will be the starter next year and will serve as a stop gap to either Zwahlen or Reilly, both of whom are entirely untested. I don’t see McKenzie as a DI QB. He will probably serve in a role similar to Ewaliko.
RB- We do need to find a between the tackles runner to replace Iosefa. Lakalaka has gotten better but is not explosive enough. We can’t live on 2-yd dives. However, we do have a couple of explosive backs with Saint Juste and Joas.
WR- It was obvious this year that we lacked someone who could spread the D and everyone was more or less a possession receiver, save for Ewaliko who is still too raw to be consistent. Next year this will be our deepest unit with the return of both Stubblefield and Haynes to a unit that includes Kemp, Pedroza, Barker, Ewaliko, and Anguay. With Stubblefield and Haynes returning, this also allows Pedroza to move back to the slot. But they receiver I am most excited for is Darrian Josey. He will most likely be our deep threat and speedster. Also, hopefully someone like Patterson or Sayles can step up next year.
TE- I don’t think we should get rid of it. We just need to find the right athlete. Maybe a converted WR or DE, such as Unga. TE are matchup nightmares when used properly.
OL – Need to replace C. Hopefully Wa’a is ready.
DL – Hopefully Friel can step up big time as he has the size and experience. Tulimasealii will need to develop into the talent everyone thought he was out of high school. Shawley has a good motor but is green. But I agree this unit, and especially the DT spot, is our biggest need.
LB – The return of Garcia-Williams will be the biggest thing for UH next year. His presence should help the pass rush which was non-existent this year. I disagree about the drop off after JGW and Gener being steep. Lance Williams is decent and Poti looked good at times. Castro was a huge prospect out of high school and looked like he needed time to get used to the system having barely played college ball. He should be much more productive next year. Fonua and Mageo looked overmatched at times but should improve.
DB – Our corners have been lacking or sometime. Nelson is alright against the run but looks absolutely lost against the past. He was a Freshman last year so you’d imagine it was growing pains. Ne’Quan is steady but needs to become a lockdown corner in the mode of Ryan Mouton to make it easier for the safeties. Higdon, Mulanga, Lewis, and Jerrell Jackson need to step up big time. Trayvon Henderson looks like he will be a good one and hopefully Marrell Jackson can find his form again. The safeties should be as good if not better next year.
P/K – This unit scares me as we have no one with experience. I assume Weese will get first shot at PK duties, but do we even have a punter on the roster?
41. I wouldn’t give up on him yet. I saw enough progress from his accuracy stand point to say he has a chance. I wasn’t sold based on last year but after the Rice game, he got better each week. Finals 3 weeks of season he maintained a QB rating above 120 each game with awful play calling which consisted of a lot of hand offs.
My same prediction as last season, no more than 4 wins.

Not saying I would want him to be the starting QB next year, but it would be interesting to see how he would do with an improved receiving crew as we should have next year. Of course let the best man win the job.
If Woosley isn’t the Starter I have no Doubt it will be a long season again.
Woosley is the only QB with EXPERIENCE under his belt and he is Far ahead of the playbook than the other QB’s
There is no reason I can see where Wittek will not be the starter.
Woolsey has trouble reading the defense and making the throws, especially the outs and the deep ball.
Fresno State head football coach Tim DeRuyter announced Wednesday that he has signed defensive back Alan Wright and quarterback Chason Virgil and the duo will enroll at Fresno State for the spring 2015 semester.
Wright signed a National Letter of Intent with the Bulldogs while Virgil signed an athletic aid agreement. Wright has played the last two years at Blinn College in Brenham, Texas and he will have three years to complete his two remaining seasons of eligibility with the Bulldogs. Virgil graduated early from West Mesquite High School, allowing him to enroll as a freshman at Fresno State in January.
“I’m very excited to announce the addition of Alan Wright and Chason Virgil to our football team,” DeRuyter said. “Both of these outstanding student-athletes will enter school in January and begin to compete for positions on our 2015 Bulldog football team. They both come from outstanding programs and we feel that their character and athleticism will be tremendous assets to our program as we strive to consistently compete for championships.”
Wright, a 6-1, 185-pound defensive back from San Antonio, Texas, ranked third on the Buccaneer defense in 2014 with 48 tackles. He added 4.0 tackles for a loss, had four pass breakups and one interception during his sophomore season. As a freshman, he totaled 36 tackles, three tackles for a loss and had two picks.
He spent his prep days at San Antonio’s O’Connor High School where he led his team to the fifth round of the playoffs in 2012. Wright garnered all-district and all-state honors in football while also playing basketball and running track. He was studying civil engineering at Blinn College.
Virgil is a 6-1, 170-pounder out of West Mesquite, Texas. He completed 64.9 percent of his passes for 2,765 yards and 41 touchdowns as a senior while leading West Mesquite to a 9-3 record and into the Class 5A Division I bi-district playoffs. Virgil also rushed for 411 yards and eight touchdowns in 2014

46. You listed a lot of WRs but 0 who are proven. Pedroza has talent but if you followed the team, he wasn’t even starting the last few games. He played but wasn’t used like he was most of the season. Haynes hasn’t done much at all yet for me to get excited about. Stubblefield probably has the most upside but he’s recovering from injury and very young. When you put our WRs against others in the league, I think we would rank near the bottom as far as guys who are explosive. I can’t name 1 who can catch a 7 yard hitch, make a DB miss and take it 20 more yards.
Calen Friel is done playing football so he won’t help us like you mentioned. Kennedy should not have to play NT ever. Mageo redshirted so I am not sure what game you saw him over matched. Lance Williams was over matched as well as Fonua. Were too slow filling the gaps, couldn’t set the edge, and liability in coverage. Nequan will never be Mouton. Mouton ran a 4.4 40 and was dominant. Nequan is in 4.6 range. Your take on Nelson is opposite IMO. He was the best cover guy but struggled wrapping up on tackles. I’m sure the tape would confirm. He tore his meniscus so I’m sure that bothered him a lot the 2nd half of season.
Am I correct in saying that our tight ends did a great job blocking for the quarterback the last half of the season? They were kept in most plays for that reason.
What about switching #1 to offense? He seems quick. Not disciplined enough for deep coverage. Maybe he could play the slot? Ikaika did show improvement however the position should be open going in. Let the better talent prevail.
University of Hawaii football’s fans and readers don’t worry about the Warriors!. I have told you guys already! When Norm Chow was a Ass. Coach at BYU, USC, UCLA @ South Carolina he had great quarterback!. Remember also at BYU Steve Young, Robby Bosco, Jim McMahon and Ty Dittmer they had to go to missionary for 2 years before they start at quarterback and their were great passing and running quarterback at BYU. Norm Chow is doing the same thing like BYU he really wants a grown up kids behind the center line not a young kid like Woolsey!. You all have seen what kind of mistakes when he played last year because he was really young at quarterback! . Now after three years look what he having coming back from missionary mission, grayshirt, redshirt, JC and transfers from other large University. By looking at them they are really mature adults and that what Norm Chow really wants players they position the right way. Just wait he is bringing back the major air attack and a great running game like did before!. Remember he lost a lots of players that he didn’t recruited. To me they should put Steven Lakalaka at punt returner and kickoff he is a great open field runner just like he was in high school. Because really he has great vision to look for holes!. He could be a another former University of Hawaii football player and CFL Chad Owens. No University would not like to kick the ball to him!. And if the football team really take it seriously!. They should put there quarterback, slot back, runningback and wide receiver on the University of Hawaii track team for there years in college!. Player that have brake away speed is really hard to keep up with! Like a lots people like ESPN say that Oregon quarterback was slow!. But on ground level he is really fast on his brake way!. If the University of Hawaii football team do that it will make other university to make a lot’s of change on the D-line!. Try to catch run down a kid that run a 50 yards in 3.1 or 3.8!. They aren’t safety are that fast in college!. Look at a runningback from a college in the division three. He is 6′ and 269 lb. and he run the 40 yard in 4.0 for a big guy he is fast!. Hawaii should take it seriously about it!. When kids come out from college and take another step into the NFL. NFL football players are really faster on D-line!. It be really better for the kids from the University of Hawaii going into NFL have the same speed and size like them players too!.

When you give me the answer to that, that tells you why Nevada didn’t give up many sacks. 532 rush attempts vs 376 pass attempts. Another reason he probably wasn’t sacked a lot.
