Dead zone

Hallmark does not make a card for this event, but today is the beginning of the “dead period,” which means college football coaches may not make in-person contact with a recruit or his legal guardians.

Coaches are limited to one phone call a week to a prospect during this period.

This also is final-exam week at UH. About 24 Warrior football players will receive degrees at this Saturday’s commencement ceremony.

Recruits can text the coach and the coach can respond! Thank goodness for technology….So recruits start texting!!

MacKenzie Milton should put a call into Fred Ulu-Perry and say “hey I want you blocking for me at UH in ’16”

  6. oracle December 15, 2014 9:13 am

UH AD. I’d hire the person who does the admin for the Oracle America’s cup. The same old thinking about things the same old ways seems to be a minimum requirement for any Uh admin job. When an academic institutions problem is the way you look at problems -with a lack focus on solutions- you have to question the mission of the institution. UH should be leader in problem solving- after all they should be teaching it. yet the perception is the only thing they lead in is creating bureaucratic messes that create black holes of incompetence. It’s shameful.

  7. jimmy the lock December 15, 2014 9:14 am

UHfan808, read your post on complaints in the prior blog topic. No use reply to negative posts, just don’t continue reading them. Always going get complainers. I complain, you complain, everyone complains. That’s why get Complaint Departments and not Constructive Criticism Departments.

If a movie sucks it sucks. I don’t need to tell them how to make a good movie. Revenue alone can tell that the movie sucks. If the acting sucks it sucks. I’m not going to tell them how to be a better actor.

So let there be complainers, no need complain about them.

    Aiyah, Mondays are hard.

    Traffic sucks.

The only thing better than a local boy winning the Heisman is a local boy winning the Heisman as a Warrior! Geev’um brah!

  9. jimmy the lock December 15, 2014 9:20 am

I think a local boy being the POTUS is pretty cool. 😎

  10. A-House December 15, 2014 9:33 am

watching the 49ers game yesterday was like watching some UH games in 2014 – nice start and most of the 1st quarter then it nearly all down hill after that with mostly conservative calls, missed assignments, QB unable to hit wide open receivers, etc.

it’s 3rd and 5- 7 yards for a 1st down – why call passing plays that forces the receivers to run past the first down marker without turning around or no crossing pattern – QB sacked!

4th and 1 yard at the 7 yard line – call was running up the middle- stacked at the LOS for 0 yards to maintain the drive with 10 defensive players inside your tackles? does this make sense?

  11. tom December 15, 2014 9:36 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

    jimmy the lock #8

Don’t forget that a local boy was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize!

  12. tom December 15, 2014 9:39 am

A-House #9 “does this make sense?”

    Only if it works!

Or as one Warrior said: “victory has many generals; defeat is an orphan”

  13. SteveM December 15, 2014 9:59 am

    Good morning everyone!

Great to hear that about 1/4 of the team will graduate this week.
Getting a degree and moving on with life is what counts, although we will miss them on the field next season.

  14. jm2375 December 15, 2014 10:36 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Best wishes to all those taking final exams! Study hard!
(Best thing about final exam week is lighter traffic in the mornings 😀 )

    GO WARRIORS!
    GO WAHINE!

  15. Dan-O December 15, 2014 10:37 am

    Re: #9

Goes to show that bad playcalling is seen at all levels, and a “bad” call is simply one that doesnt work.

  16. st. anthony trojan December 15, 2014 10:42 am

tom…the local boy was a democrat not count.. n besides to much politics involved.. not count ne way…he he he

    9 & 14…

The 49ers playcalling was horrendous. Although my Seahawks would rather say it was good defense.

Watching the Bengals shutout Johnny Football was pretty entertaining. Manziel is a LOOOOOOONNNNNGGG way from being a decent NFL QB. His footwork is terrible, and his lack of pure arm strength is now exposed at the NFL level. All game, the Bengal DBs consistently closed down on every open Browns WRs.

Wrong footed, off-balance floaters aren’t going to get it done at any level of pro football.

Yes it was only one game, but it showed that the Browns don’t have a franchise QB for at least a few more years.

  19. graham December 15, 2014 11:14 am

What is the point of these dead periods?

  20. 3-Prong December 15, 2014 11:27 am

……and How ‘Bout Then Cowboys! Sympathies to the 48er fans (48 because something is missing…hehe) Sorry d1, couldn’t resist.

  21. jimmy the lock December 15, 2014 11:34 am

49ers want to enjoy the extra winter weeks relaxing.

  22. connor December 15, 2014 11:34 am

Agree that the 49ers are pathetic, but it sure does not help to have referee call a roughing the passer on an entirely clean shot to Wilson thereby allowing Seattle to score the go ahead td.

  23. 49er fan December 15, 2014 11:44 am

    # 16. gobows December 15, 2014 at 10:47 am

    #firegregroman – hire Norm Chow

the 49ers have the personnel for chowball.

  24. jimmy the lock December 15, 2014 11:48 am

    Seattle was already leading.

  25. oneseason December 15, 2014 12:17 pm

It’s the best time of the year! I have visions of exciting playbooks dancing in my head. Tis the season for contacting potential offensive coordinators and position coaches to augment existing staff. Let’s Go Bows … make 2015 a winning season.

  26. Don Weir December 15, 2014 1:20 pm

    Tsaikos
This Saturday there are a significant number of FB Warriors receiving their diplomas.
UH Letterwinners & UH Athletics are hosting a reception for graduating athletes in the Nagatani Center from 7:30 AM to about 8:30 AM.
Want to congratulate those that played hard on the field and succeeded in the classroom? Join us at the Nagatani Center. We will be passing out the ‘athlete’ stoles to be worn during the ceremony and kept as mementos.
Photo opportunities prior to the graduation ceremony traditionally are held in front of the large UH logo on the side of the Letterwinners Clubhouse.

  27. Shoko December 15, 2014 1:23 pm

Think it’s time for Chow to be reunited with Neuheisel!

  28. connor December 15, 2014 1:23 pm

Jimmy: Thanks. you are right. but if no penalty, then 4th down and seattle had to kick FG and score would have been 13-7, rather than 17-7. At least SF would have remained within td of seattle.

  29. Derek December 15, 2014 1:24 pm

Too late now! NFL admitted that the hit on Russell Wilson which resulted in roughing the passer penalty was the wrong call. At the time, Seattle was leading 10-7 and it should have been 4th down. A field goal should have made it 13-7 with about 14 minutes left in the 4th quarter. Who knows what would happen after that? Instead 2 plays later, Seattle scored a TD which made the score, 17-7 which was also the final score.

It’s something about a name that brings about greatness. Just pronounce these names slowly. Herschel Walker, Bo Jackson, Marshall Faulk, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Larry Bird, Lebron James, Kevin Durant, Barry Sanders, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Peyton Manning, Marcus Mariota. It has that ring to it.
Another one. Colt Brennan. And now, how’s this one…..drum roll please…..McKenzie Milton!!!!!!! Love it!!!

  30. What? December 15, 2014 1:26 pm

The dead period prevents teams that do not make it to a bowl game (coaches who have way more time) from making home visits to prospective recruits. It keeps the rich rich.

  31. Z December 15, 2014 1:33 pm

    Dr J.

    Maybe time to recruit zombies?

  32. islandman December 15, 2014 2:31 pm

Stephen T suggested on Bobby C show today that UH should pull out of the Ohio St. game. Something to the effect that they play Wisconsin two weeks after that game and that is a lot of travel ( about 4500 and 4100 miles each). And that game may affect bowl game possibilities.

I agree, but the “powers” at UH may not want to withdraw from that game.

  33. jimmy the lock December 15, 2014 3:07 pm

Derek, no matter anyway cause Niners didn’t score anymore points.

  34. jimmy the lock December 15, 2014 3:15 pm

Derek, it’s not the name that brings greatness. C’mon if Larry Bird didn’t do what he did on the basketball court you would think nothing of his name.

  35. jimmy the lock December 15, 2014 3:37 pm

Whatever, good luck Sammis Reyes in your basketball career.

  36. mctruck December 15, 2014 4:55 pm

Both QB’s from the 49ners and Seahawks are dbl threats and will run when they have to; except I think Kapernick wastes time looking for where he’s going to run to, instead of where his receivers are to pass to. That explains why Kapernick does a lot of stutter stepping, and it’s not so he can fid an open receiver. Get rid of that ball, like real fast; just my jmop.

  37. graham December 15, 2014 5:24 pm

    #30- thanks

  38. papajoe2 December 15, 2014 5:34 pm

Each team is allowed only so many trips by recruits, no matter if they are from Hawaii, the mainland or Australia. Coaches must make that tough decision on who they give a trip to Hawaii. Remember, Moses Malone once tripped to Hawaii. Everybody knew he wasn’t coming here, but if you are a coach and a blue chip says he would like to visit, what do you do?

  39. Lori December 15, 2014 9:31 pm

What happened to 350 lb running back David Fangupo?

  40. st. anthony trojan December 15, 2014 10:54 pm

awwww ok. ..thanks papajoe that one…
like say..if sum student from st. louis..go watch basketball game at ‘sheriff’ they no can talk to him or say hello etc ?

  41. Chow Von Appen December 16, 2014 6:16 am

#32: I agree. In fact, I honestly think that UH should just schedule extremely soft OOC opponents, like extremely low level sun belt or MAC competition, along with 2 FCS schools. This will give UH the best chance to become bowl eligible, retain chow, and remain in the lowest zone of mediocrity for years to come.

  42. Chow Von Appen December 16, 2014 6:22 am

#32: I agree. But i think UH should go a step further. UH should actually just schedule a cupcake OOC schedule (although what happens when YOU are the cupcake?) and play two FCS teams every year along with bottom tier MAC and sun belt schools. Can’t do C-USA schools becuase UH has already demonstrated that they can’t even beat a team as bad as Rice.

Hopefully this will get us to 6 or 7 wins, bowl eligibility, and will allow us to retain chow and keep us forever in the extremely low edge of mediocrity.
