Warriors land JC linebacker
Russell Williams Jr., a linebacker from Sacramento City College, told me he has accepted a scholarship offer from the Warriors.
Williams is 6-1, 220 pounds and capable of running 40 yards in sub-4.7 seconds.
He played outside linebacker for the Panthers, but is projected to compete at inside linebacker for the Warriors.
Williams, who is an NCAA qualifier, will have four years to play three season for the Warriors.

I think it would be humorous if Wisconsin hires Bo Pelini. Riley replaced Pelini who replaces Andersen who replaced Riley.
Bit surprised that Chow was even given an interview considering his track record as a head coach.
It’s too bad Hawaii lacks journalists who could go to Chow and ask him to explain the application. I can imagine there are good reasons to do it, and they have nothing to do with lack of loyalty. But I won’t be the one to try to defend Chow here.
No surprise that Chow’s applying for other jobs. Like what ST mentioned in the past, many coaches automatically send applications out when jobs open, even from guys that are entrenched at their current schools.
I wouldn’t be surprised if at least 75% of MWC coaches applied for the Oregon St job. In every tangible way imaginable (salary, conference, budget, access to recruiting grounds) the OSU job is better than UH and just about every MWC job.
The only things UH has over OSU is living in a tropical paradise, and not having an inferiority complex against the bigger, better funded, and headline grabbing Univ. of Oregon.
If you’re coaching in a mid-major conference, why wouldn’t you apply for that job? It’s not like June Jones’ agent didn’t have applications out when he was at UH. Just because it happened before social media and the exponential growth of news outlets and blogs, doesn’t mean it wasn’t happening everywhere before… Don’t kid yourselves.

Nice pickup. I think Chow’s agent has a responsibility to continue to explore opportunities for Norm and to see what his market value is. On another note its funny how the Bay Area is shutting down b/c of a big downpour. Yes its raining hard but its only rain and some gusts of wind. Schools and companies are shutting down.
Interesting that OSU interviewed a DLine coach. Not even a coordinator or an assistant at a top FBS program. Besides the fact that he’s an alum it seems like they could have better candidates in the top 5 than him and Norm.

Mike Riley’s base salary at OSU was $1.5 million. Which is the lowest salary in the Pac-12 by a couple hundred thousand.
ex-CSU coach Jim McElwain was the MWC’s highest paid coach at $1.5 million. I think his new salary at Florida starts at $3.5 million.
Brady Hoke received an extension at SDSU in 2010, raising his salary to $700k-$750k during the extension. Hoke took the Michigan job the next year when he applied and was offered the job. This year at Michigan, he is due to make $2.8 million, which is middle of the pack for the Big Ten.
The Big 12’s lowest paid coach is ISU’s Paul Rhodes at $1.8 million.
In the SEC, Not counting Derek Mason of Vandy (salary not public), the lowest paid coach is Mark Stoops (KU) at $2.7 million.

Good find Jeezy. Since he was a finalist it’s also very possible he was pursued more than applied. Never hurts to listen in any field of work. And why would people complain? If he does apply somewhere and gets the job no payout from UH!
I suppose if one were to look on the bright side of Chow applying for the OSU position is that there wouldn’t be a buyout and a head coaching job would come sooner than later if he were to get the job.
22… At some point, it’s always about the money. In my opinion, you can’t really blame that. The family needs to be supported.
Not sure if everybody just saw the news, but Oahu median home price is now at $719k.
Obviously a head coach can afford a good home here, but where things get dicey are at the assistant positions. As we have seen with Benjy Taylor, a UH assistant coach’s salary probably can not cover all living expenses without some form of help. Looking at society in general in Hawaii, how many households have 2 or more families living at home because it’s just too expensive to own/rent a place on their own.

Just to expand on your info… These were the top 5 candidates that were actually interviewed. These were the guys OSU selected from the larger pool of applicants.
One thing UH should do, but won’t because the people in charge are academics (w/o real world experience) and don’t think in an opportunistic way, is track several schools’ top 5 candidates and see if anybody consistently makes the interview rounds but isn’t selected for the job.
Three things: 1) The candidate probably has a solid resume to keep getting selected for interviews; 2) Find out why they haven’t been offered the job, hopefully it’s because the school already had a predetermined favorite; 3) The more times a person is rejected, the more likely they are to accept your term sheet down the road.
If you are a football coach on the Div. 1 level, at a school mired in red ink, with faculty, students and general public ambivalent about the future of your intercollegiate athletic program, you better be out there looking at what’s available. You would be fool if you didn’t.

First – as ST states: It was OSU that sought out Norm Chow and Norm Chow did not abandon ship – contrary to statements about his loyalty etc.
Second: If you wanted to get rid of him, why all the fuss about loyalty. If you don’t keep faith with someone, why should you expect him to keep faith with you?
Third: What is more important? Your job or your family? A better job, better pay, more appreciation for what you do, less headaches for your family – would this be better than getting flamed by people that don’t appreciate you?

37. The fuss is about preaching one thing and doing another. I just reported what the article said. It can be a PR nightmare for Hawaii if they are trying to retain season ticket holders and donors when you have a coach you think isn’t a 100% committed. Doesn’t affect my views but it could effect some. Do I actually think any Power 5 football conference team would hire Norm? Hell no… I doubt any mid major would with the lack of success of this program.

Ferd Lewis column this morning right on the money with truths and common sense. Not acting sooner than later is going to put UH Athletics in a deep hole that is going to take years to get out of. But when was the last time that the “Power Brokers” supposedly behind the scenes paid attention to ” truths” and “common sense”?!?!
This week so much great info came out from Tsai, Reardon & Lewis. Heard a lot of this stuff for a long time and never really saw so much of these things in hard print!
A hot topic being discussed at our “after golf” meeting, was about how unfriendly fan and family, Aloha Stadium has become. It was mainly a topic about the lack of fans at the games. We all agree that the start time needs to be later, at say 7:30, 8:00, or even, the last choice, 7:00. I remember how going to a UH game was an annual event for families. People would go early in the morning to get good parking. Families would start up the hibachi and cook great meals for their potluck. Kids would be throwing football in the parking lot. The people who work on Saturday, would join the gang as soon as they could get there. Today, the game starts at 6pm, so that we would get better exposure from the east coast media and fans and voters of the polls. Not as much families now for their kids to pass on the tradition. No Hibachis at all. No umbrellas on rainy days. Absolutely no food, not even a musubi or even water to be brought in the Stadium. Bags being searched (thanks al kaida). Got to pay a premium for good parking. Cannot hang around after the game in the parking lot to discuss the game. Very high prices for the food and beer, soda, water, in the stadium not to mention tickets for the game. Even the swap meet was being blamed. It was noted that there was very little activities at the Stadium other that UH football and the swap meet. Remember the concerts, monster trucks, stock car racing, etc. Funny that PPV was hardly mentioned as a deterent of attendance. It was even mentioned that Oceanic is losing money on PPV. Maybe because all of our golfers are at least 60 years old and don’t want to bother with the boring, losing program so at time, would watch PPV. I understand and agree with most of the reasons for the rules. I don’t agree with the 6pm start time, nor the no open fire rule (al kaida again?). We’ve got to bring the families back to the stadium. Maybe a family package on tickets. Also brought up, was the very little people around town or anywhere, wearing the UH shirts and caps. It was mentioned that it is no longer a “pride” thing wearing UH gear, remembering how you could anywhere on Oahu and see someone wearing UH gear. I explained to them that whatever was not sold at the UH stores, UH wasn’t making a profit from it. Also, the “H” logo belongs to someone not a part of the University. Can we get a new logo, maybe a contest from the students, with the prize being 1 semester of tuition and books (or even a year). Guys also mentioned the facilities is being run down. Very little other activities at the Staidum. Other things were discussed but these are the ones that stood out to me. How I long for the “old” days at the stadium.

Looks like I missed all the excitement about Chow and OSU possibilities. While I believe Chow would not initiate contact, one should note that he did quite well with teams loaded with 4 star athletes–and now he has 3 years head coaching experience… 😐 Certainly makes him a viable minority candidate for a “courtesy call”.
39… He’s probably enjoying not having to deal with overbearing and/or incompetent administrators.
Oregon’s state law is similar to the “Rooney Rule” in the NFL, which requires teams to interview minority coaches (even if there’s 0 chance of them being hired). It’s all about fairness, sort of.
I’m glad to hear that OSU approached Chow and not the other way around. Having said that, Osia Lewis is black, so the requirement to interview a minority candidate would have been met even if they didn’t call Chow.

papajoe2 — yup, I was there with you, even though I didn’t know you at the time. My uncles and aunts used to go to the stadium around 2:00 pm. We knew approximately what row/section in the inner circle to meet up. he inner circle was general parking then.
The food was cooked by 5:30 pm and we ate before heading into the stadium around 7:00 pm for the 7:30 kick-off. There was a carnival-like atmosphere in the stadium under the lights. I don’t know stadium beer prices because I do not drink and we were all too stuffed to buy food. Maybe some cotton candy.
…and back then, it didn’t matter what the team record was or who the opponent (except BYU). Aloha stadium and UH football was the place to be on a Saturday night.

Parting comment: I agree with Ferd Lewis. Why does Ben Jay have to stick around until June 30? What is he going to do in the next 6 months. Absolutely nothing. I agree that we have to get working on getting the new basketball coach and new athletic director now. Time is money and it cannot be wasted like UH has been doing. Oregon State used that accelerated rule to get their Head Coach quickly. Clapp and McNamara can handle the duties in the meantime. Say Aloha to Jay right now so he can get some snow before Christmas. Jay would be happy too. I also agree that Blangiardi and Amemiya are the best 2 local choices. However, I don’t know if they want the job because they make more money where they are now. If Blangiardi gets to be AD, say Aloha to Pay Per View.
P.S. Looking for Mariota to get multiple hardware tonight at the Home Depot College Football Awards presentation on ESPN at 2 or 2:30 today. Davey O’Brien, Maxwell, and Walter Camp Award. He might win all of them besides the Heisman on Saturday.

Don’t think we can conclude anything about PPV if Rick Blangiardi became the AD. As AD his first priority would be the financial health of the athletes department.
Was surprised last night listening to the Portnoy and Wheeler radio show. A caller asked which university would keep an 8-29 coach. Portnoy’s response was a sarcastic “The University of Hawaii.”

We have a Governor that believes he cannot do anything, the UH determines what to include in its budget, and has absolute discretion on how to allocate and spend any funds (autonomy), and a Chancellor who keeps repeating – UHAD needs to be self-sufficient. No vision, no leadership, and just throwing good money after bad. Nothing changes. So, do we really need a new AD, new BB coach, etc.? Maybe things need to get even worse before something is done.

My initial reaction was that saying Ben Jay will stay until his successor is settled:
1) Ben Jay is not being unceremoniously tossed out. He has the dignity of completing his duties.
2) The department would have a head, even if a “lame duck”
3) Nothing said he could not leave before June 30. If a successor was hired next month, he could conceivably fulfill his obligations and depart in February or March.
4) Nothing said that a successor will not be named until June. Of course, the sooner the better.
Did I misread or misunderstand the ‘BJ will stay until his successor is settled in” part?
there are those who are willing to accept risks/challenges and there are those who don’t – where would we be without risk takers?
all this makes is for a happy merry-go-round.
I will purchase season tickets again, but don’t look forward to the BORING offensive scheme/play calling.

Just too much “drama” with UH Athletics…We need someone to “right the ship” before it goes under. If Benji is not cited in any of the “reported BB violations”, then UH can’t go wrong in signing him to a two year contract and making him the official men’s BB coach. We really need to start stabilizing things…
As for Chow, he should be told in “no uncertain terms” that we need a “head coach” and he needs to concentrate on that…Aside from that, he needs to hire an Offensive Coordinator that brings an exciting brand of offense. I can’t believe we decided to stay as FB coach without some serious stipulations…
Also, is the rumors correct that Demo won’t be back??? If so, there went our East Coast and Florida recruiting…

Whether Norm contacted OSU or OSU contacted Norm, is was kind of a bad PR move by him to interview knowing it could be made public. Any human in their right mind knows Norm had .0001% chance of getting hired and it just isn’t worth angering fans and possible donors who are holding on to a thread in trying to support the program. That’s just my take. Whether you wan’t to believe everything that comes out of Derek Inouchi or Norm Chow’s mouth is up to each person. But I take everything said with a grain of salt because everyone is looking out for their own self.

By the way hopefully the “real power people @ UH” & Vroman & BJ aren’ them, will look at former UH player Sam Moku & former UH Coach Rick Blangiardi as possible candidates. Problem is Blangiardi probably makes more in his current job. Get rid of BJ now and bring in Dick Tomey as the “interim” AD.
Tomey has no AD experience. If he’s only interim, it’ll will be a waste of time and money. At 76 years old, is it really worth his time only be the interim AD?
As I said the other day after BJ’s announcement, I suggest Jim Livengood.

– Available
Also, maybe most important for UH, Livengood is an excellent fund raiser. Everywhere he’s gone, he’s improved donations and booster support.
The interim Chancellor is a smart guy. Rather than fire BJ for or without cause he let him “voluntarily” resign for “personal” reasons. This way it looks better on BJ’s resume. It should be easier and quicker to find another job with a clean employment record. You know BJ can count on Bley-Vroman for a glowing recommendation where ever he applies. It’s in the UH’s best interest BJ finds another job as quickly as possible.
I am guessing that the university will step on the gas pedal and hire the new AD quite swiftly. At which time BJ will be transferred and/or reassigned within the university as he completes his tour. I am glad that they didn’t wait until the 18th.
We need recruits!! We need good recruits!!! Looking at scout.com or espn.com, we only has 7 or 8 recruits in total? What’s happening? BTW, whatever happened to WR Don Yeh Patterson and RB D J Riggins? Weren’t they supposed to be 3 or 4 stars recruits from 2014? Were they here? What happened to them?
Will the new year bring a mascot? It doesn’t seem like it should be a big expense. 3 years doesn’t seem like an unreasonable amount of time to seek student and community inputs, discuss options, and make a decision. Sure, its not a super high priority, but 4 years without a mascot would sure seem hard to explain.

He sure is passionate. Not many people have a commercial segment where they mostly talk about all the things UH is messing up on.
I like Rick Blangiardi. I have seen his passion and commitment to the UH program in person. He bleeds green. But I am little nervous about him becoming AD…does he play well with others? I dunno. Just as Jerry Glanville brings a lot of fire and color to the sideline, I picture Blangiardi bringing a lot of fire and color to the A.D. office.
On the other hand, he has been a consistent champion for UH football and other sports in general since the 70’s. He knows the landscape of Hawaii and has seen many cycles of avid and fickle fans during the ups and downs of football. I think he is one of the best candidates to fundraise and put fans back into the stands/arena.
There are other good candidates that bring different strengths and personalities. I am curious to see how this all plays out.

Way to go ST! My thoughts exactly. When I first heard about Chow/OSU, my first thought was that OSU initiated the contact. It’s funny that the people that want Chow out are the ones that are upset. They don’t want him here but if it looks like he is trying to leave for another school they call him a traitor and a quitter. I don’t understand. Maybe Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez is not the easiest guy to work for with two football coaches leaving within the past 2 years in Gary Andersen and Brett Bilema.
Oregon State just announced a $40 million dollar facilities upgrade plan for their football program.
The group that has been raising funds to fire Chow which includes former players, active in the football booster group, has not given up. They are now seeking to have an athletic director who will fire Chow appointed before the six months are up. I think the pressure to fire Chow has not gone away and now there is a sense of urgency given the potential six month delay with Ben’s staying.
