Warriors land JC linebacker

Russell Williams Jr., a linebacker from Sacramento City College, told me he has accepted a scholarship offer from the Warriors.

Williams is 6-1, 220 pounds and capable of running 40 yards in sub-4.7 seconds.

He played outside linebacker for the Panthers, but is projected to compete at inside linebacker for the Warriors.

Williams, who is an NCAA qualifier, will have four years to play three season for the Warriors.

Let’s get a bunch more and win 7!!!!

  3. gigi-hawaii December 11, 2014 3:51 am

    That’s great news.
For some reason, typing on the Warrior Beat is difficult.
I have to retype the same letter twice.
It only happens here, nowhere else.

  4. hatakeman December 11, 2014 4:46 am

I have trouble typing only because I am junk at typing. Oh yeah, good morning all.

  5. tom-warriornation December 11, 2014 5:11 am

    Go Warriors!
fyi: Stevie Wonder had a concert here in the SF Bay area last week; so at least someone did it right! Big storm hitting northern CA right now (biggest one in 5 years). Most schools closed today!

  6. tom-warriornation December 11, 2014 5:15 am

Our Facebook group page called Hawaii Football Warrior Nation now has over 1000 members including many current and former players (and Tsaikos) so please send a request to join us! MadeinHawaii is doing a great job of posting great links there.

  7. Former UH Athlete December 11, 2014 6:41 am

I hope we get news of some DLine commits. Preferably a couple JC transfers ready to play 2015. UH has some big departures to make up for next season.

  8. TOM December 11, 2014 6:44 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

Keep them coming! Welcome Mr. Williams!

  9. jeezy33 December 11, 2014 7:28 am

In other news, Norm Chow applied for the Oregon State job. Shows where that guys loyalty lies… Burning down a program and trying to run…

  10. cappie the dog December 11, 2014 7:31 am

If Dave Aranda lands the Wisconsin head coaching position, do you think it’s possible that he’d hire Kevin Klune for his staff?

  11. A-House December 11, 2014 7:36 am

    # 9 & 10:

if true – UH should allow/tell Chow to resign NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

we should NOT continue to “worry” about commitments to play for Chow by any athlete if this is his mantra – dump the hand that feeds you

all schools are looking for “proven winners” and Chow’s record is very dismal – why would he apply at OSU with a 8 – 29 record????????? I would place the application in “file 13” immediately.

  12. UHfan808 December 11, 2014 7:40 am

    Good morning, Tsai-kos!

Welcome to the Warriors, Mr. Russell Williams Jr.!

    Cheeehu!

    😀

  13. A-House December 11, 2014 7:40 am

    #11:

that would be amazing if Wisconsin does hire Aranda as HC!

is he among the “up ”n coming coaches ready for a HC position?

and, UH defense – I would replace the DB coach – either he cannot teach or the players don’t believe in the defensive scheme(s)

  14. Shoko December 11, 2014 7:42 am

I think it would be humorous if Wisconsin hires Bo Pelini. Riley replaced Pelini who replaces Andersen who replaced Riley.

  15. Shoko December 11, 2014 7:45 am

Bit surprised that Chow was even given an interview considering his track record as a head coach.

  16. man eating apple December 11, 2014 7:46 am

It’s too bad Hawaii lacks journalists who could go to Chow and ask him to explain the application. I can imagine there are good reasons to do it, and they have nothing to do with lack of loyalty. But I won’t be the one to try to defend Chow here.

  17. Former UH Athlete December 11, 2014 8:08 am

No surprise that Chow’s applying for other jobs. Like what ST mentioned in the past, many coaches automatically send applications out when jobs open, even from guys that are entrenched at their current schools.

I wouldn’t be surprised if at least 75% of MWC coaches applied for the Oregon St job. In every tangible way imaginable (salary, conference, budget, access to recruiting grounds) the OSU job is better than UH and just about every MWC job.

The only things UH has over OSU is living in a tropical paradise, and not having an inferiority complex against the bigger, better funded, and headline grabbing Univ. of Oregon.

If you’re coaching in a mid-major conference, why wouldn’t you apply for that job? It’s not like June Jones’ agent didn’t have applications out when he was at UH. Just because it happened before social media and the exponential growth of news outlets and blogs, doesn’t mean it wasn’t happening everywhere before… Don’t kid yourselves.

  18. gobows December 11, 2014 8:15 am

which one these guys dont belong??? wtf were they thinking.

    • OSU athletic director Bob De Carolis and deputy AD Mark Massari interviewed five candidates for the job: Wisconsin head coach Andersen, Eastern Washington coach Beau Baldwin, Utah State coach Matt Wells, Hawaii coach Norm Chow and San Diego defensive line coach Osia Lewis.

    how will this affect recruiting?

  19. PONO December 11, 2014 8:17 am

Nice pickup. I think Chow’s agent has a responsibility to continue to explore opportunities for Norm and to see what his market value is. On another note its funny how the Bay Area is shutting down b/c of a big downpour. Yes its raining hard but its only rain and some gusts of wind. Schools and companies are shutting down.

  20. PONO December 11, 2014 8:21 am

Interesting that OSU interviewed a DLine coach. Not even a coordinator or an assistant at a top FBS program. Besides the fact that he’s an alum it seems like they could have better candidates in the top 5 than him and Norm.

  21. Willie December 11, 2014 8:21 am

#9 is this confirmed? #18 very good points.

However, what happened to “I am not a quitter’ what are you teaching these young men if I quit”, “We’ll get this turned around in 2015”, “I love these guys, each and every one of them; we are in this together”.

Makes you wonder if it really is about the money and his ego.

  22. Former UH Athlete December 11, 2014 8:26 am

Mike Riley’s base salary at OSU was $1.5 million. Which is the lowest salary in the Pac-12 by a couple hundred thousand.

ex-CSU coach Jim McElwain was the MWC’s highest paid coach at $1.5 million. I think his new salary at Florida starts at $3.5 million.

Brady Hoke received an extension at SDSU in 2010, raising his salary to $700k-$750k during the extension. Hoke took the Michigan job the next year when he applied and was offered the job. This year at Michigan, he is due to make $2.8 million, which is middle of the pack for the Big Ten.

The Big 12’s lowest paid coach is ISU’s Paul Rhodes at $1.8 million.

In the SEC, Not counting Derek Mason of Vandy (salary not public), the lowest paid coach is Mark Stoops (KU) at $2.7 million.

Are you understanding why any mid-major coach will apply for Big 5 conference job and shouldn’t be blamed for it?

  23. kev-1 December 11, 2014 8:27 am

HAHAHAHA . . . What a chump. Chow is delusional if he thinks that another school would hire him with the record he has.

It is ironic that while his fate with OUR team and school was being determined, to stay by the way, HE was at a job interview for another school.

I can’t be the only one seriously miffed by this.

  24. Turfwar December 11, 2014 8:28 am

Good find Jeezy. Since he was a finalist it’s also very possible he was pursued more than applied. Never hurts to listen in any field of work. And why would people complain? If he does apply somewhere and gets the job no payout from UH!

  25. Shoko December 11, 2014 8:32 am

I suppose if one were to look on the bright side of Chow applying for the OSU position is that there wouldn’t be a buyout and a head coaching job would come sooner than later if he were to get the job.

  26. Former UH Athlete December 11, 2014 8:35 am

22… At some point, it’s always about the money. In my opinion, you can’t really blame that. The family needs to be supported.

Not sure if everybody just saw the news, but Oahu median home price is now at $719k.

Obviously a head coach can afford a good home here, but where things get dicey are at the assistant positions. As we have seen with Benjy Taylor, a UH assistant coach’s salary probably can not cover all living expenses without some form of help. Looking at society in general in Hawaii, how many households have 2 or more families living at home because it’s just too expensive to own/rent a place on their own.

  27. Former UH Athlete December 11, 2014 8:43 am

    19..
Just to expand on your info… These were the top 5 candidates that were actually interviewed. These were the guys OSU selected from the larger pool of applicants.

One thing UH should do, but won’t because the people in charge are academics (w/o real world experience) and don’t think in an opportunistic way, is track several schools’ top 5 candidates and see if anybody consistently makes the interview rounds but isn’t selected for the job.

Three things: 1) The candidate probably has a solid resume to keep getting selected for interviews; 2) Find out why they haven’t been offered the job, hopefully it’s because the school already had a predetermined favorite; 3) The more times a person is rejected, the more likely they are to accept your term sheet down the road.

  28. NotNasti December 11, 2014 9:08 am

If you are a football coach on the Div. 1 level, at a school mired in red ink, with faculty, students and general public ambivalent about the future of your intercollegiate athletic program, you better be out there looking at what’s available. You would be fool if you didn’t.

  29. Stephen Tsai December 11, 2014 9:11 am

Chow did not apply for the job.
OSU called him to discuss the job.

  30. shadow December 11, 2014 9:14 am

Just because you got interviewed doesn’t mean that you went looking. When the big schools go looking for their Man, they come to you.

  31. Mainland December 11, 2014 9:19 am

Thanks ST for clarifyng Norm Chow’s involvement with OSU job. He did NOT apply, but took a call from the OSU AD – big difference.

Former Rainbow Warrior Kwamane Bowens will be on scholarship at Texas St after a year at Butler CC

  33. 808warrior fan December 11, 2014 9:22 am

If Norm Chow did apply for the Oregon State job then as a fan who was at all the home games (except Wyoming…was on the mainland) & the SJSC game on the road, I for one am DEMANDING his resignation

  34. 808warrior fan December 11, 2014 9:24 am

Another thing I sure hope this JC LB Russell Williams Jr can tackle 1 on 1 as Hawaii as a defense was “pathetic” in tackling as the season progressed. We need defenders who can T-A-C-K-L-E

  35. BigWave96744 December 11, 2014 9:25 am

Former Warrior Will Gregory completed his Junior year at Missouri Southern State University where he averaged 7.4 yards per carry

  36. Stephen Tsai December 11, 2014 9:25 am

OSU AD likes Chow. AD called Chow. Chow answered the phone. They talked football. That was it.

  37. Darren December 11, 2014 9:26 am

The OSU phone call to Coach Chow appears to have been required by law…

House Bill 3118 will make Oregon the first state in the nation to require universities to interview a qualified minority candidate before hiring a head coach or athletic director. The legislation as amended Friday gives universities an out if they make a good faith attempt but can not find minority applicants to interview. The provision sunsets January 2020.

Former Warrior Justin Alo has 1 game left in his RSFrosh season at Mt San Antonio College that saw him as the starting QB, leading his team to a 10-2 record, passing for 2980 yards, 24 TDs, 9 INTs, 58.5%. Also rushed for 287 yards and 7 TDs

  40. MattyBoy December 11, 2014 9:39 am

It’s not like anyone wants Chow AT here . I hope somebody picks him up so he can leave already. Nobody wants to watch boring football anymore.

  41. tom December 11, 2014 9:39 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

First – as ST states: It was OSU that sought out Norm Chow and Norm Chow did not abandon ship – contrary to statements about his loyalty etc.

Second: If you wanted to get rid of him, why all the fuss about loyalty. If you don’t keep faith with someone, why should you expect him to keep faith with you?

Third: What is more important? Your job or your family? A better job, better pay, more appreciation for what you do, less headaches for your family – would this be better than getting flamed by people that don’t appreciate you?

    Third:

  42. hitman December 11, 2014 9:41 am

According to the Portland Tribune Hawaii HC Norm Chow interviewed for Oregon St. HC job.

  43. Ipu Man December 11, 2014 9:44 am

Darren and Tsai: That makes sense. They wanted Andersen and they needed to talk to 5 guys. Get him. Got him. Done.

  44. Rodney December 11, 2014 9:46 am

Anyone know what June Jones is doing?

  45. Rodney December 11, 2014 9:48 am

Is unlv football hire a good one? Any comments?

  46. NotNasti December 11, 2014 9:51 am

    ST: Thanks for clarifying.

  47. jeezy33 December 11, 2014 9:55 am

    37. The fuss is about preaching one thing and doing another. I just reported what the article said. It can be a PR nightmare for Hawaii if they are trying to retain season ticket holders and donors when you have a coach you think isn’t a 100% committed. Doesn’t affect my views but it could effect some. Do I actually think any Power 5 football conference team would hire Norm? Hell no… I doubt any mid major would with the lack of success of this program.

  48. jeezy33 December 11, 2014 9:59 am

    41. It really doesn’t matter to me but does anyone expect Chow to admit he applied for a job??…He might, he might not have… Just like I don’t expect Ben Jay to admit he got fired. Really no difference from a reporter asking Ben why he resigned and Ben saying family reasons…

  49. Old Diver December 11, 2014 9:59 am

It was a call to comply with state law. In other words Norm Chow had no shot at getting the OSU position.

  50. Willie December 11, 2014 10:06 am

ST, thanks for the details on Chow/OSU.

Ferd Lewis column this morning right on the money with truths and common sense. Not acting sooner than later is going to put UH Athletics in a deep hole that is going to take years to get out of. But when was the last time that the “Power Brokers” supposedly behind the scenes paid attention to ” truths” and “common sense”?!?!

This week so much great info came out from Tsai, Reardon & Lewis. Heard a lot of this stuff for a long time and never really saw so much of these things in hard print!

  51. papajoe2 December 11, 2014 10:12 am

A hot topic being discussed at our “after golf” meeting, was about how unfriendly fan and family, Aloha Stadium has become. It was mainly a topic about the lack of fans at the games. We all agree that the start time needs to be later, at say 7:30, 8:00, or even, the last choice, 7:00. I remember how going to a UH game was an annual event for families. People would go early in the morning to get good parking. Families would start up the hibachi and cook great meals for their potluck. Kids would be throwing football in the parking lot. The people who work on Saturday, would join the gang as soon as they could get there. Today, the game starts at 6pm, so that we would get better exposure from the east coast media and fans and voters of the polls. Not as much families now for their kids to pass on the tradition. No Hibachis at all. No umbrellas on rainy days. Absolutely no food, not even a musubi or even water to be brought in the Stadium. Bags being searched (thanks al kaida). Got to pay a premium for good parking. Cannot hang around after the game in the parking lot to discuss the game. Very high prices for the food and beer, soda, water, in the stadium not to mention tickets for the game. Even the swap meet was being blamed. It was noted that there was very little activities at the Stadium other that UH football and the swap meet. Remember the concerts, monster trucks, stock car racing, etc. Funny that PPV was hardly mentioned as a deterent of attendance. It was even mentioned that Oceanic is losing money on PPV. Maybe because all of our golfers are at least 60 years old and don’t want to bother with the boring, losing program so at time, would watch PPV. I understand and agree with most of the reasons for the rules. I don’t agree with the 6pm start time, nor the no open fire rule (al kaida again?). We’ve got to bring the families back to the stadium. Maybe a family package on tickets. Also brought up, was the very little people around town or anywhere, wearing the UH shirts and caps. It was mentioned that it is no longer a “pride” thing wearing UH gear, remembering how you could anywhere on Oahu and see someone wearing UH gear. I explained to them that whatever was not sold at the UH stores, UH wasn’t making a profit from it. Also, the “H” logo belongs to someone not a part of the University. Can we get a new logo, maybe a contest from the students, with the prize being 1 semester of tuition and books (or even a year). Guys also mentioned the facilities is being run down. Very little other activities at the Staidum. Other things were discussed but these are the ones that stood out to me. How I long for the “old” days at the stadium.

  52. SteveM December 11, 2014 10:38 am

    Good morning everyone!

Welcome to the Rainbow Warriors, Russell Williams Jr.!

Looks like I missed all the excitement about Chow and OSU possibilities. While I believe Chow would not initiate contact, one should note that he did quite well with teams loaded with 4 star athletes–and now he has 3 years head coaching experience… 😐 Certainly makes him a viable minority candidate for a “courtesy call”.

  53. Former UH Athlete December 11, 2014 10:46 am

39… He’s probably enjoying not having to deal with overbearing and/or incompetent administrators.

  54. Former UH Athlete December 11, 2014 10:53 am

Oregon’s state law is similar to the “Rooney Rule” in the NFL, which requires teams to interview minority coaches (even if there’s 0 chance of them being hired). It’s all about fairness, sort of.

  55. HawaiiMongoose December 11, 2014 10:53 am

I’m glad to hear that OSU approached Chow and not the other way around. Having said that, Osia Lewis is black, so the requirement to interview a minority candidate would have been met even if they didn’t call Chow.

  56. SteveM December 11, 2014 10:54 am

    RE: #46
papajoe2 — yup, I was there with you, even though I didn’t know you at the time. My uncles and aunts used to go to the stadium around 2:00 pm. We knew approximately what row/section in the inner circle to meet up. he inner circle was general parking then.

The food was cooked by 5:30 pm and we ate before heading into the stadium around 7:00 pm for the 7:30 kick-off. There was a carnival-like atmosphere in the stadium under the lights. I don’t know stadium beer prices because I do not drink and we were all too stuffed to buy food. Maybe some cotton candy.

…and back then, it didn’t matter what the team record was or who the opponent (except BYU). Aloha stadium and UH football was the place to be on a Saturday night.

  57. Derek December 11, 2014 10:58 am

Russell Williams, Jr. Welcome to the ohana. Meet your fellow Rainbow Warriors,
Jerrol Garcia-Williams, Lance Williams, and Manly Williams. All linebackers, that’s if Manly moves from safety.

Take two. Wonder if the new UNLV coach, Sanchez, is the second coming of Gerry Faust. Great high school record, but didn’t do as well at in college (Notre Dame).

Parting comment: I agree with Ferd Lewis. Why does Ben Jay have to stick around until June 30? What is he going to do in the next 6 months. Absolutely nothing. I agree that we have to get working on getting the new basketball coach and new athletic director now. Time is money and it cannot be wasted like UH has been doing. Oregon State used that accelerated rule to get their Head Coach quickly. Clapp and McNamara can handle the duties in the meantime. Say Aloha to Jay right now so he can get some snow before Christmas. Jay would be happy too. I also agree that Blangiardi and Amemiya are the best 2 local choices. However, I don’t know if they want the job because they make more money where they are now. If Blangiardi gets to be AD, say Aloha to Pay Per View.

P.S. Looking for Mariota to get multiple hardware tonight at the Home Depot College Football Awards presentation on ESPN at 2 or 2:30 today. Davey O’Brien, Maxwell, and Walter Camp Award. He might win all of them besides the Heisman on Saturday.

  58. Old Diver December 11, 2014 11:22 am

    52

Don’t think we can conclude anything about PPV if Rick Blangiardi became the AD. As AD his first priority would be the financial health of the athletes department.

  59. Old Diver December 11, 2014 11:35 am

Was surprised last night listening to the Portnoy and Wheeler radio show. A caller asked which university would keep an 8-29 coach. Portnoy’s response was a sarcastic “The University of Hawaii.”

  60. AdmrVT December 11, 2014 11:41 am

#52. Why? We have a Governor that believes he cannot do anything, the UH determines what to include in its budget, and has absolute discretion on how to allocate and spend any funds (autonomy), and a Chancellor who keeps repeating – UHAD needs to be self-sufficient. No vision, no leadership, and just throwing good money after bad. Nothing changes. So, do we really need a new AD, new BB coach, etc.? Maybe things need to get even worse before something is done.

  61. st. anthony trojan December 11, 2014 12:05 pm

    # 46….gosh was a lot of discussion when pau you guys golf…hope not to much beer there…no good drive been a little ‘tipsy’….

    But what a DISCUSSION…and 100% true…bring back the old days…

Have to presume …most in not all of them rules has a root base with the concessionaire…because of bidding…they bid high..so have to sell high..like the airport…simple to change it…bid as same.. but open to all…McDo can bid.. but must sell at prevailing price same as ne other McDo…so can Zippy’s…sell at prices at their other restaurants… n Pizza Hut… n Taco Bell etc…bring ur hibachi..must have fire extinguisher near by…then at half time…go to ur favorite food outlet… n let be like a 7 n’ 11…freedom of choice…pepsi or coke…your choice…

Rules can change…but no one wants to ‘buck’ it…money talks to stadium authority…so fans suffer…there is hardly ne really FAN BASE LEFT…and this coming season will expose it after the first 4 games…

San n dismal… but for the ‘boys’…we all know they will work hard…under no real leadership skills from UH, AD…ADMIN…OR HEAD COACH…

  62. Shoko December 11, 2014 12:11 pm

    Okie dokie.

That’s put to rest Chow initiating contact for the open position. T’was an interesting topic of discussion.

  63. A-House December 11, 2014 12:23 pm

interesting remarks on Chow/OSU targeted $$$$ as the most important factor

loyalty – IMHO, it means a heck of a lot!

I say fire BJ and Chow now!

  64. SteveM December 11, 2014 12:25 pm

RE: Ben Jay staying until June 30, 2015 (maximum)

My initial reaction was that saying Ben Jay will stay until his successor is settled:
    1) Ben Jay is not being unceremoniously tossed out. He has the dignity of completing his duties.
    2) The department would have a head, even if a “lame duck”
    3) Nothing said he could not leave before June 30. If a successor was hired next month, he could conceivably fulfill his obligations and depart in February or March.
    4) Nothing said that a successor will not be named until June. Of course, the sooner the better.

Did I misread or misunderstand the ‘BJ will stay until his successor is settled in” part?

  65. A-House December 11, 2014 12:27 pm

there are those who are willing to accept risks/challenges and there are those who don’t – where would we be without risk takers?

all this makes is for a happy merry-go-round.

I will purchase season tickets again, but don’t look forward to the BORING offensive scheme/play calling.

  66. A-House December 11, 2014 12:29 pm

    SteveM:

just like I mis-heard the acting chancellor say that BJ had “full control” of the athletic dept at UH – har, har, de har!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  67. champ December 11, 2014 12:29 pm

I am repeating myself again. LET UH RUN THE STADIUM DURING FOOTBALL SEASON. PUT THE STADIUM AUTHORITY ON PART TIME STATUS UNTIL SEASON IS OVER, ALTHO THEY WILL HAVE TO PROVIDE SERVICES TO UH DURING FOOTBALL SEASON EG; PURCHASING, MAINTENANCE, PKG PERSONNEL, SECURITY AND MISC. BUT ALL NET PROFITS GO TO UH FOOTBALL WHICH IN TURN HELPS ALL OTHER UH SPORT PROGRAMS. I MEAN UH IS A PART OF THE STATE ISN’T IT?? WHATS THE BIG DEAL. WORK IT OUT ALREADY!!!!!! WHO THE HECK STARTED THE STADIUM AUTHORITY ANYWAY?

  68. kev-1 December 11, 2014 12:36 pm

GOT IT!!! In bold letters too. I can’t remember the last time ST put something in bold.

I still find it funny. And btw . . . a lot can be said over the phone. Or not said.

  69. bowwar December 11, 2014 12:37 pm

I hope Rick Blangiardi is offered and accepts the job as the new UH AD…I believe he has the professional accumen to turn the athletic program around.

Too bad about Scott Wong going to Pepperdine…You gotta make tough choices in life and sometimes you can’t wait around for something when there isn’t any guarantees. With the NCAA report still pending, there is going to be the need for someone in leadership to step forward.

And Chancellor…yes they do need “to be self-sufficient”…we all agree…so where are the concession fees…where are the parking fees…who should pay for the non revenue sports travel fees…n operating budget for golf balls…swimming coaches salaries… etc…should not each dept be given a ‘budget’ to live within their means, like other depts. up there…is ok for cancer dept to go over budget year in n yearb out ?

Be nice if ne show could get him on.. n is asked sum very tough questions… by BC or L&L…be good to get the Governor on also…n Donna Kim…lol…lol

  73. st. anthony trojan December 11, 2014 1:18 pm

LOL LOL LOL one season…you make joke about that headline…

  74. st. anthony trojan December 11, 2014 1:26 pm

“and Chow being kept on to lead the Rainbow Warriors football team for another year.”

Interesting choice of words in that PBN quote above…”LEAD”…

Could ‘lead’ into oblivion..maybe that is the plan…??

  75. Διογένης ὁ Σινωπεύς December 11, 2014 1:30 pm

THE WARRIOR BEAT IS STEPHEN TSAI’S BLOG.

DOES ANYONE BOTHER TO READ WHAT HE HAS TO SAY?

“Chow did not apply for the job.
OSU called him to discuss the job.”

What Stephen is trying to say is that Chow did NOT apply for the job. I know that perhaps it is hard to understand what Stephen is saying.

    ‘nuf said.

  76. jeezy33 December 11, 2014 1:44 pm

    76. And i’m sure you believe everything that comes out of Norm Chows and Ben Jays mouth too..
I believe a 100% Norm Chow, his family, and PR guy at UH told ST that Norm didn’t interview. But it doesn’t mean you have to believe everything Norm Chow says.

  77. kev-1 December 11, 2014 1:44 pm

If the LB commit was a qualifier, why did he go JC? Was he not recruited out of HS?

  78. kev-1 December 11, 2014 1:46 pm

Seems like a pretty standard reply if you are contacted by the media after it is found out that you were interviewed.

    “They called and I listened.”

  79. st. anthony trojan December 11, 2014 1:50 pm

Διογένης ὁ Σινωπεύς # 765…contrary to what you say…he did interview for the job…from what this article says…for me..if you are interviewed…means you are interested…therein lies the confusion…does not matter..if you called or they called…

Spokesperson for OSU SAYS “I can’t divulge that due to confidentiality,” IF HE INTERVIEWED OR NOT…

Derek Inouchi says. “[Coach Chow] is not leaving or looking to leave,” he said. “Coach Chow has stressed his commitment to the University of Hawaii. (how sad)
    he he he

  80. bowwar December 11, 2014 1:52 pm

Just too much “drama” with UH Athletics…We need someone to “right the ship” before it goes under. If Benji is not cited in any of the “reported BB violations”, then UH can’t go wrong in signing him to a two year contract and making him the official men’s BB coach. We really need to start stabilizing things…

As for Chow, he should be told in “no uncertain terms” that we need a “head coach” and he needs to concentrate on that…Aside from that, he needs to hire an Offensive Coordinator that brings an exciting brand of offense. I can’t believe we decided to stay as FB coach without some serious stipulations…

Also, is the rumors correct that Demo won’t be back??? If so, there went our East Coast and Florida recruiting…

  81. st. anthony trojan December 11, 2014 1:54 pm

Maybe we should ask ST…..has a coach ever lied to you..while you have covered UH sports ?

  82. jeezy33 December 11, 2014 2:00 pm

Whether Norm contacted OSU or OSU contacted Norm, is was kind of a bad PR move by him to interview knowing it could be made public. Any human in their right mind knows Norm had .0001% chance of getting hired and it just isn’t worth angering fans and possible donors who are holding on to a thread in trying to support the program. That’s just my take. Whether you wan’t to believe everything that comes out of Derek Inouchi or Norm Chow’s mouth is up to each person. But I take everything said with a grain of salt because everyone is looking out for their own self.

  83. d1shima December 11, 2014 2:01 pm

    Great Afternoon All!

    Welcome Mr. Williams!

The fuss is about preaching one thing and doing another. I just reported what the article said.

What’s the First Rule of Holes? 😈

  84. kev-1 December 11, 2014 2:03 pm

    #83 . . . simply put and to the point. I agree.

  85. d1shima December 11, 2014 2:10 pm

Davey O’Brien Award Winner: Marcus Mariota!

  86. Former UH Athlete December 11, 2014 2:31 pm

81.. The issue with Benjy is his personal issues, which don’t look good. I’d say he’s still a long shot to become the permanent head coach.

Looking at his performance so far, I think he’s doing a good job considering the major handicaps he’s had to work through.

  87. jeezy33 December 11, 2014 2:38 pm

Kyle Smith is probably the best current candidate I can think of to be the basketball coach

  88. Kifi December 11, 2014 2:42 pm

The OSU executives were able to make the decision more quickly than normal, with the approval of President Ed Ray, under the school’s “accelerated hire” provision. The move was made to try to keep intact the 2015 recruiting class and to help ensure that Beavers athletes weren’t moved to transfer.

  89. d1shima December 11, 2014 2:51 pm

    Walter Camp A-A First Team

    QB-Marcus Mariota
    LB Hauoli Kikaha

As usual the pros defend, the cons attack. NEXT TOPIC PLEASE!

  91. Na Alii Pride December 11, 2014 3:01 pm

Any chance that Kalani Sitake will get the Colo. State job, and ask Norm to be his OC? Norm could use the excuse that he wants to be closer to his family home in Cali. Can always hope right?

  92. seewhy December 11, 2014 3:06 pm

Watching the College Football Awards Show right now. I can’t believe Scott Harding isn’t up for any awards… He got snubbed!!

  93. seewhy December 11, 2014 3:08 pm

On a lighter note… Congratulations Marcus!

By the way hopefully the “real power people @ UH” & Vroman & BJ aren’ them, will look at former UH player Sam Moku & former UH Coach Rick Blangiardi as possible candidates. Problem is Blangiardi probably makes more in his current job. Get rid of BJ now and bring in Dick Tomey as the “interim” AD.

  99. Former UH Athlete December 11, 2014 4:22 pm

Tomey has no AD experience. If he’s only interim, it’ll will be a waste of time and money. At 76 years old, is it really worth his time only be the interim AD?

As I said the other day after BJ’s announcement, I suggest Jim Livengood.
    – Experienced AD
    – Qualified
    – Available

Also, maybe most important for UH, Livengood is an excellent fund raiser. Everywhere he’s gone, he’s improved donations and booster support.

  100. cocobean December 11, 2014 4:34 pm

The interim Chancellor is a smart guy. Rather than fire BJ for or without cause he let him “voluntarily” resign for “personal” reasons. This way it looks better on BJ’s resume. It should be easier and quicker to find another job with a clean employment record. You know BJ can count on Bley-Vroman for a glowing recommendation where ever he applies. It’s in the UH’s best interest BJ finds another job as quickly as possible.

  101. al December 11, 2014 5:04 pm

I am guessing that the university will step on the gas pedal and hire the new AD quite swiftly. At which time BJ will be transferred and/or reassigned within the university as he completes his tour. I am glad that they didn’t wait until the 18th.

  102. Tanman December 11, 2014 5:12 pm

We need recruits!! We need good recruits!!! Looking at scout.com or espn.com, we only has 7 or 8 recruits in total? What’s happening? BTW, whatever happened to WR Don Yeh Patterson and RB D J Riggins? Weren’t they supposed to be 3 or 4 stars recruits from 2014? Were they here? What happened to them?

  103. oneseason December 11, 2014 6:35 pm

Will the new year bring a mascot? It doesn’t seem like it should be a big expense. 3 years doesn’t seem like an unreasonable amount of time to seek student and community inputs, discuss options, and make a decision. Sure, its not a super high priority, but 4 years without a mascot would sure seem hard to explain.

  104. Bryson December 11, 2014 6:42 pm

Re 104: Donyeh Redshirted last year and DJ had shoulder surgery and gray shirted he’ll be on campus in Jan…

  105. Na Alii Pride December 11, 2014 6:55 pm

Norm needs to learn to catch the hint. Nobody likes him. Even when it’s not his fault, it’s his fault. Just go away already.

  106. wow December 11, 2014 9:56 pm

Na Alii Pride, I guess you don’t learn “to catch the hint” also because you are still posting on the blog ……

    haha, only kidding

  107. Tempmanoa December 11, 2014 10:04 pm

Blangiardi would make a great Atletic Director–smart, passionate and dedicated. Problem solver an makes things happen. He can bring in donors.

  108. Andrew December 11, 2014 10:29 pm

    109.

He sure is passionate. Not many people have a commercial segment where they mostly talk about all the things UH is messing up on.

  109. SteveM December 11, 2014 11:07 pm

I like Rick Blangiardi. I have seen his passion and commitment to the UH program in person. He bleeds green. But I am little nervous about him becoming AD…does he play well with others? I dunno. Just as Jerry Glanville brings a lot of fire and color to the sideline, I picture Blangiardi bringing a lot of fire and color to the A.D. office.

On the other hand, he has been a consistent champion for UH football and other sports in general since the 70’s. He knows the landscape of Hawaii and has seen many cycles of avid and fickle fans during the ups and downs of football. I think he is one of the best candidates to fundraise and put fans back into the stands/arena.

There are other good candidates that bring different strengths and personalities. I am curious to see how this all plays out.

  110. Da Punchbowl Kid December 11, 2014 11:22 pm

    Stephen –

Thank you for post 110! You said what the silent majority of us bloggers are thinking. Gossip and rumors are one thing, but for anyone to essentially call you a liar on you own blog is straight up bullchet!

I am not singling anybody out, but if the shoe fits wear it!

Deep breaths folks. There is a process. Nobody works harder at knowing UH Football than Stephen Tsai. Nobody. Period.

  111. hitman December 11, 2014 11:27 pm

wow Stephen Tsai are you getting upset? come you been doing this a long time !! and you are one of the better one !! face the fact !! someone is saving chow !! thats the bottom line !! sad to say!! if apply or not who cares !! one more year only buy time !! would be nice to see under witch head coach a 3 year spend did hawaii lost the most income under ? and what happend the next year !! and Stephen Tsai keep up the good work !! next time take a time out !!! your man chow get choke he never get to use the past 3 year!! lmao

  112. Markazulu December 11, 2014 11:31 pm

Goin thru my old vhs collection and found a copy of Washington vs hawaii 2007.
Good times. What ever happend to David farmer? Great blocking back

  113. SteveM December 11, 2014 11:40 pm

Yup, DPK — most of the time ST walks around with tape figuratively over his mouth because he shouldn’t say what he knows — so when he says that he knows something and actually tells us, we know he knows. 😐

  114. Maddog50 December 12, 2014 4:22 am

First of all Steven… Way to express yourself!!!! Second Ben Jay continues his destructive ways by airing dirty laundry. He brought a knife to a gunfight!!!! I can only hope hands are taken out of pockets and we collectively start to row the boat/outrigger as PJ Fleck of WMU has so wisely put it. Lets get it done, our silly destructive ways are hurting a lot of folks. Go Warriors!!!!

  115. DaveLetterMan December 12, 2014 4:50 am

Way to go ST! My thoughts exactly. When I first heard about Chow/OSU, my first thought was that OSU initiated the contact. It’s funny that the people that want Chow out are the ones that are upset. They don’t want him here but if it looks like he is trying to leave for another school they call him a traitor and a quitter. I don’t understand. I’ll probably get jumped on for this post so back to lurking. Thanks ST!

  116. Old School Dave December 12, 2014 5:08 am

ST: When does the off-season conditioning program start? Any word on how Devan Stubblefield’s and Vasquez Haynes rehab are coming along?

  117. Old School Dave December 12, 2014 5:11 am

Maybe Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez is not the easiest guy to work for with two football coaches leaving within the past 2 years in Gary Andersen and Brett Bilema.

Oregon State just announced a $40 million dollar facilities upgrade plan for their football program.

  118. Tempmanoa December 12, 2014 5:19 am

The group that has been raising funds to fire Chow which includes former players, active in the football booster group, has not given up. They are now seeking to have an athletic director who will fire Chow appointed before the six months are up. I think the pressure to fire Chow has not gone away and now there is a sense of urgency given the potential six month delay with Ben’s staying.
