Everybody wants to be Santa.
But it takes seemingly unlimited resources, volunteer elves, people willing to open their hearts and homes, chartered sleighs …
AD Ben Jay is a nice guy who had a hard time saying no. He was willing to open his financial books. He would greet critics and frenemies with a handshake. He would extend contracts. He was accessible — by cell phone, by Twitter — to reporters, to fans, to critics. He was willing to sit in an apparel store for an hour to talk UH sports. He had the best intentions.
He was the athletic department’s CEO when the chancellor wiped out a $13 million accumulated deficit, when construction projects were initiated or completed, when the H Zone was created, when the NCAA launched an investigation into the athletic department.
In the end, he did not have enough juice with the Legislature, with the hidden powers, with Upper Campus. In the end, he could not get enough needed subsidies from the Legislature, hidden powers and Upper Campus. In the end … there was the end.
Today, Jay is expected to announce he will resign as AD effective in six months.

Lost in all this is Dylan Collie, the younger brother of Austin Collie, will be joining the Warriors in January.
He already secured a release from BYU, where he redshirted in 2012 before going on a two-year church mission. At 5-10, 180, he is expected to be slotback.

UH is a toxic environment. Good luck attracting people with talent in the future. That’s why UH must rely on head hunter agencies to lure people to work at UH.
Given UH’s conference affiliation and probably never getting the funding to compete consistently at the highest levels, I was hoping UH could be a stepping stone for coaches, ADs and the like to boost their careers to the next level (success at UH would lead to bigger/better job), but with the way Upper Campus handles things, I think the stepping stone idea is no longer a reason to work/coach at UH.
Chow is the one who should’ve resigned. Chow is the reason why there will be a huge loss of revenue, not Jay.
I think there will be more than enough interested candidates.
But can UH actually fill a position in six months?
The new AD will never be able to solve these issues on his own. He will need the collective help of us as voters to influence the legislators and get them to support the athletics program as a part of the educational institution, not as a separate business.

Or UH could be going in the the direction of Fresno State who reassigned their AD and got a new one from Oregon who is more of a fundraiser.

Absurdity: is a thing that is extremely unreasonable…
Start or belong to a booster club…for a softball team…or a Halau…or your sons or daughters soccer team……help raise funds for that organization…Give said funds and proceeds to another organization for disbursement and safekeeping…(in this case cost is only 3.5%…) request funds to purchase equipment…which is approved by the coach…DENIED by the trustee of those funds….you gave to manage for you…
For me…if the coach request those funds…and was requested by the ones that ‘raised it’…should be a thumbs up n a go….unless there is specific rules saying…no go….is not micro managing…is absurdity….or nano-managing…if to use that computer term….

I have been unabashedly promoting Sam Moku as a local candidate for the new AD, but in attempt to be mildly objective (given he is my teammate) I’ll throw another solid name to consider for the short list: Lance Lopes, SR. AD at UDub. I find it interesting that an interim Chancellor can get so much done since his appointment on 9/1/14. You got to have a lot of “juice” to have your AD fire the BB coach two weeks before the start of the season then have your AD “voluntarily” place his own head on a guillotine.

From what I understand — and this is, like, fourth hand — Jay did not actually have a contract. He signed an offer sheet. Under terms, if he is notified before Dec. 15, he can get three months’ notice; after that, it’s six months’ notice. It appears the six months max allows him to search for a job — it’s always better to get a job when you have a job — and enables UH to find committee members, have meetings, have more meetings, hire a search firm, have more meeting, vote, re-vote, have more meetings, have meetings with better catered food, re-vote, make a suggestion, have the suggestion sent back, have more meetings …

Rumor has been swirling, bring back the old. Maybe Duke Aiona, Bob Wagner, Rick Blangiardi, Dick Tomey, Joey Estrella, Mufi Hanneman, Arnold Morgado, Kale Ane, Charles Djou, and Doc Mugiishi. I think Duke Aiona would be great — loves sports with a passion, well connected with the community, is a doer and knows the government side and business side very well. They should just hire someone local and not go into a national search, we all know that is not going to work.

I thought I read somewhere that BJ had sent his family back to the mainland which leads me to believe, if true, that his resignation was his decision.
Regarding Sanchez, there were rumors reported that the Fertittas were donating $30 million up front to go towards salaries, training tables facilities and other expenses. Whether Sanchez pans out to improve the Rebel football program, I think the monetary benefits far outweigh the disadvantages of hiring a high school coach.

Seemed to be pretty evident towards the end that Ben Jay didn’t have full control over the decision making. Seems like upper campus is making that decision on Chow moreso than the athletic department.
With no authority to fire Norm Chow, Ben Jay was placed in the impossible position of raising donations which everyone knows is dictated by the success of the football team. Jay is the second scapegoat athletics director in a row to get the axe. This does not bode well for the rest of the University of Hawaii system.

Former – Ive used LAC training facilities on campus, its an upgrade from Gorman. Truck full of cash coming to upgrade it. No Oregon, but if the Fertittas are involved it will be a swift upgrade. Project First Down!
Coco, the chancellor is what’s known as “flexing”, and at the same time, getting an early start at spring cleaning.
One person I know that will not get to the short list is Duke. The current political at the helm would prevent that from going too forward–further, behind the scenes folks say they were not at impressed at some of his management skills in his previous positions.
Ultimately, the new AD will have to know the athletics/business side, but what is crucial in any of these positions is to have a”rabbi” (as they say in NYC) at upper campus. While we may seen dysfunctional to most, (and maybe we are a bit more than others), this tension is institutionally common. At most universities, the chancellor is like Michael Coreleone; he calls the shots and decides who lives and dies. No different here– the next person needs to promptly identify the lay of the land and cultivate relationships quickly.

I feel saddened for Ben Jay although the news is not a surprise. Given the state of the athletic dept it does feel like the right move. It takes time for anyone to come to Hawaii and accustom themselves to the ways of doing business, interacting and being successful. The present state of affairs does not allow for a learning curve in this regard and we need a new AD who can hit the ground running.
Not that anyone is listening to me but I would advocate for the new AD to be someone well accustomed to the community. Someone who also has a strong background of success in managment and sports and (importantly) who is “well endowed” enough to stand tall in the midst of the madness and lead.
Not to be lost in all of this is the very fine crop of QB’s and receivers coming our way. Should they all show up as planned I think we will be in good shape. Now all we will need is someone who knows how to conduct the offensive orchestra.
The next AD, ideally, needs to be someone who will demand and be granted the power to run the department (hiring and firing) and make his own decisions without meddling administrators and hidden power brokers. Sadly, that’s a tall order and not how things are done at UH which is dysfunctional. Like reinventing the wheel.

Blangiardi would get my vote. He bleeds UH green and white. Problem is that he and Tomey lack any athletic administration experience which will probably be on the job description.
I like this Collie pick up. Makes Chow look kinda bad after the Wadsworth incident though. Props to BYU coaching staff for not causing issues like we did to them.. We struggled in the slot this past year. We should get a boost outside when Stubblefield returns. Kemp needs to get more physical this off season… Haynes should be hungry after sitting out.
I wonder if Nico Fertitta will decommit from Notre Dame and play for UNLV.

I have no insider knowledge, but honestly, given how many disasters are at UH right now, ‘nice guy’ isn’t what UH needs. Very difficult position and you need a certain skill set to get through all the BS. Jay seemed out of place; seems to do better in easier environments like OSU.
ST: Would Clapp or Moniz-Kahoohanohano apply? or do they know it is a lose-lose proposition at UH and just waiting to retire?

Other universities lay foundations, cultivate the right way of doing things and make the right choices when it comes to hiring coaches, administrators, chancellors, and presidents. UH? UH looks to bring another egg layer aboard.

It’s bad enough when the football team lays an egg on national television…but all throughout the upper campus, including UHAD, it is fast becoming the habitat for egg layers. Things have gotten so bad, rotten, that the inside joke is where on campus is the next hatching.
Today Jay has the dishonors…and his egg laying days at UH (as AD) has come to an end. Good.
Tomorrow… with so much uncertain leadership…who knows? Bad.
Yet with the proliferation of campus egg layers, obviously, one has to look at the BOR. Ugly.
Keep in mind this is the group that does all the searching, interviewing, vetting, and screening of applicants. That might explain things. Can this group for once make a good hire, preferable sans feathers.

Sorry, but Ben Jay is NOT a nice guy. Oh, he may be nice to the media and to his boss, but he is not nice to people who work with and for him. I don’t know about Blangiardi, but I agree that Amemiya is very unlikely. Remember, he worked at UH as the executive secretary to the BOR and knows how things operate. I’m pretty sure he’s making good money in the private sector and would not be interested in tarnishing his image by taking a stab at the UH Athletics Directorship. Tomey would be an interesting choice. Kobayashi does not have the proper experience but certainly has a father who has a lot of political pull. That connection might make him a worthwhile AD if he can fundraise using that connection. Whomever ends up with the job, I do hope it is someone from Hawaii who understands one, our culture and two, what they are getting into if they say “yes.”
To be certain, this Vegas fellow Lorenzo is very wealthy, but not a per se billionaire. Rather the market capitalization of his company is worth a billion or so– much different from his net worth.

Sorry but I have zero confidence in this Chancellor. I don’t really get the vibe that he cares or has enough knowledge/experience in the athletics field.
I am not surprised that Coach Chow is returning for a 4th season. Simply, UH does not have the money to buy him out. I predict a reduction in renewal of season ticket holders somewhere in the range of 10% to 15% of the current numbers based on the past several years. I gave up my season tickets last year after 25 years since I predicted UH would not be good at all.

Someone mentioned the other day that Chow wasn’t very good in the booth at UCLA & Utah. He did win a bowl game at Utah which I can’t remember when UH has been in one last and at UCLA he ran the pistol which I don’t think he’s fond of that offense. Run the game from the booth Mr. Chow!
My choice is Blangiardi, IF HE IS WILLING, as he has the business savvy and passion for the Warriors to make things work…I doubt if he would take the job, but we can hope.

Utah under Chow had the worse offense in the PAC-12. Utah became bowl eligible because they had the number one defense in the PAC-12. Chow’s conservative offense requires a shutdown defense to make up for it’s lack of scoring. Chow would have taken the MWC Championship if he was able to recruit Alabama’s defense.
University of Hawaii football program should shut down for sure!. And see how many people will be upset with it!. That don’t need football played in their state. University of Hawaii athletic program and fans are no match with the people in the state. University of Hawaii should be a school with no sports events!. Here at UNLV we have a better program then UH. Just make it really easy for the state of Hawaii. Just shut down the University of Hawaii campus at Mona and keep the Hilo campus. Because the state is not making money. So give the problems to the worker that you vote them in!. Let them pictures it!.

Chow’s offense reminds me of the Tomey days of Dave Fagg’s offense, which was run, run, and punt. Tomey would have lasted longer at UH, had he stayed with Adam Rita’s offense and with JJ’s input.

Jordan, when he is calling the plays, is doing so according to what Norm wants . Besides the plays being called, it’s a matter of executing the plays too .

also, makes sense that athletes may have higher GPAs (too bad nothing is said about graduation rates, which are more important) than the average in the general undergrad population, being that the undergrad population is MUCH larger than the population of student athletes, and athletes tend to have more services available to keep them eligible.

I would vote for Blangiardi. He knows UH, was a former player and Assistant Coach. He is also the one that basically started Televising UH Sports decades ago.
He was ahead of his time in Televising College Sports. Today’s College money for Sports nationwide is coming from TV money. Who better than Blangiardi to help get us a good TV deal to bring in the big bucks. He could finally implement his plan that UH never allowed him to present. I think he has already done all he needs in local TV. This would be up his alley and a service to his community.
I think Blangiardi is a fighter and could work with the Legislature and big donors.

Is it any wonder that support is ebbing away? I am starting to fully understand the disgust with UH Upper/Lower Admin that I hear in frequent conversations swirling around. Many fans and supporters that have been sitting on the fence, wavering in support, waiting for some positive movement will not be straddling for long.
SC #74 Many season ticket holders can gauge football attendance as they look around the stadium. Turnstile count is smoke and mirrors; last game many of the estimates came in at +.- 15,000. I believe that your 10%to 15% drop will turn out to be a little low (sad to say).
I am so relieved that the UH that I attended as a student/athlete did not have these issues.

One other thing that I think needs to be made clear. We still need to support the programs. Just because the AD management team is going through what ever they are, the kids still need the support of the fans, so I will continue with my work with Softball, attend some of the WBB games and buy my football season tickets. I am a fan of the kids!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reading all prior posts, I have a different take on Jay’s resignation. He is the chancellor’s sacrificial lamb. He knows he can’t get rid of Chow because of lack of funds and by getting rid of Jay he can calm the fans who want Chow gone. I feel the only way to force the issue is to stage a protest on campus or at the SCC calling for Chow’s and or the Chancellor’s head. Another good place for a protest would be at the state capitol.
I like June Jones for AD, he had a lot of great ideas for the program as coach to take us to the next level but had a incompetent AD at the time. His coaching days I believe are past him but I still think he would bring in a great coach and can turn our Athletic Department around.

I believe he tried to do a good job but lost too much credibility in malahini missteps. If there is a “Reason for leaving last job” line on his next job application, he could enter “Hawaii fan cultural shock”.
I hate how everyone says we don’t have the money to fire Chow. We don’t have the money because not enough people come to the game to watch the boring product he puts on the field. We somehow found the money to fire Gib and the money can be found to fire Chow as well. We will lose much more money if we keep him in the lose attendance. It is a stupid and sad move that our program accepts such failure. He would be fired at any other program in the nation with the record he has. He also has not developed any players into the NFL
I think Ben Jay helped sign his resignation when he decided to change the nickname of the Football team back to Rainbows and folks like myself didn’t donate after that change. Chow ball losing games didn’t help Ben Jay cause either but disinfranchising Warrior Football fans was a self inflicted wound. He could have just had Throwback Jersey day, but nope!
People find the stupid excuses not to support UH.
Rainbows has been the nickname for years and years before JJ decided to change it.
Personal reasons but staying for 6 months? More UH blah blah. Think it was jan ken po between BJ & NC. The BIGGEST LOSER– UH fans!
Personally I am glad that Chow is staying. I still think that he will turn it around so I’ll support him for another year. This years team was lacking in many areas. offensively and defensively. Joey, the bull, will be difficult to replace so we will need more overall speed from the team and better accuracy from our QB to go along with improved play calling. Ben Clark#71, offensive tackle, was named Offensive Player of the Year. A tackle? Yeah, so that shows that we need some better skilled position players. Le’t see what we can add to current roster. Let us Subdue the pessimism and support our boys and coaches with optimism. Continued criticism has no positive effect on success and do want them to succeed RIGHT?

I like that UH leadership announced a plan for the Athletic Director and football HC. It was good that the AD commented on the win-loss record:
‘Jay said “4-9 is not successful,” but he praised Chow’s interaction with players, and the team’s success in the classroom and graduation rates. Jay also said the Warriors’ recent recruiting success “should continue.”‘
Unfortunately, none of this helps explain how the 4 win 2014 record is going to be maintained, let alone improved.
Northern Iowa: A 27-24 win at home against a very good FCS school.
San Jose State: A 13-0 win on the road against a team with 2 MWC wins.
UNLV: A 37-35 last second win at home against a team with 1 MWC win.
Wyoming: A 38-28 win at home against a team with 2 MWC wins.
If the UH leadership announces the hiring of additional experienced coaches, I would feel a lot better about both the prospect for a winning season. If they were to hire someone great with the plan to transition them into the Head Coach in 2017, I would feel much better about the prospect for an increase in season ticket sales.
Tom, JJ changed it for the better. Sorry, but only the baby boomers like it. That throwback uni is UGLY!!!
I sure hope the “rainbow” is dropped by the next AD.

seriously though, although I am not necessarily a Mufi guy, that guy is smart, committed to athletics and is a fast learner. He can surely work with State entities. Put some of that tough guy attitude to work. (Make it conditional upon him quitting his radio job though….really not his forte).
Ben Jay and the “Rainbow” name was one of his first “malahini” missteps. An akamai AD would say out of this emotional issue — intervening only alienated many. He should have taken this as warning about the underling issues and feeling of the fans.
Proposing to close the red/yellow sections of the stadium was the ultimate fan disconnect. His ignorance of fan seating preferences and their struggles to get “good seats” over the years hurt. This certainly wasn’t a tactic to people to buy more season tickets in red and yellow.
The disconnect that hurt the most–especially in the fund-raising” arena, was turning down the 13th road game in the 2013 season. He lost the sympathy card– poor UH team has to turn around and go on the road to make a few bucks to help the program…NOT. Then he has a $2 million year end deficit after turning down the $600K game. Turning down the game and $ and then asking for more donations does not work.
Many would argue about this, but I think the next AD has to deep understanding of the fans and culture of Hawaii. I don’t care how well he crunches numbers (he can always get help with that). Past Hawaii coaches that got fired or politicians that have served and not re-elected might have some insight on the culture–especially the fired Jim Donovan. (pssst, Jim…I think you’d like the current UH president a lot more than the last one).
Chris Ault wore two hats as both AD and Coach at Nevada Reno
and did pretty good. If not Rockne, maybe Jun Jones could be a
good fit doing precisely that till we hire Rolo…as coach.

Private funds are there to buy Chow out. It’s now a matter if UH is willing to eat crow after they declared Norm Chow a great coach.

When I” resigned” from “active duty”, I left that day. When I resigned from the Kalihi-Y Board of Managers, I left that day. When I resigned from the “active Army Reserve”, I left that day. When I resigned as a Claims Manager, I left that day.
Maybe I’m just “old fashioned”, but when you resign you leave immediately; not hang around for 6 months!!!!!!!!
Is this the “final” accepted position by the UH- Manoa Chancellor? Like most if not all sports at UH, the fan base is primarily oriental whose tendency is to make little/small noise; good or bad. We need to be more like our mainland counterparts to yell and cheer or voice our near total disgust with the current UHAD decision to retire, but not until June 2015 with the approval of the Chancellor’s office?
And, as his final official act BJ will support Chow for another year? Why not 2 years until the full 5 years are done?
If the ax is going to fall, let it be now; for the betterment of the football program (MHO). Will it affect recruiting? Too early to judge.
I will continue to support the University of Hawaii athletic programs. Through all the good and bad times. To Coach Chow, family, staff, and players all the best for next football season. Imua Na Koa Anuenue.

As for the “rainbow”, there is some tradition to it. But another movement had claimed it as their own. And they are much much more visible and known as such with the rainbow.
The last time we were known as rainbows, we sucked for quite some time. As soon as we add the rainbow back to our name, we suck again.

Ben Jay was focused on branding to increase sales of UH trademark products. It was the right focus for merchandising its product under a single name. As it was, football was the Warriors, baseball was the Rainbows, basketball was the Rainbows Warriors, and the Wahine had their own. But the fan reaction was totally unexpected as it divided the fan base…still till today. Can we get past this? Wear what you want. Whatever color; with or without a Rainbow. I am so disgusted about this petty issue, I found a nice black t-shirt that simply has HAWAII on it…in gold..

#135 … While the long history of diversity in team nicknames might have been a red flag for the AD, what bothered me was the seemingly cavalier way the decision was made. It doesn’t seem like it would have been that hard to poll at least the students and season ticket holders. You could have yelling competitions during breaks in games to measure fan enthusiasm. You might pair the nickname options with mascots to get that resolved too. You gather data, get fans engaged, and lay the groundwork for a decision that doesn’t take people by surprise and create a feeling of disenfranchisement.

The upcoming schedule is just so self-defeating. Is it too late to cancel either the Wisconsin or Ohio State game. Add a second FCS school to the schedule. It’s better to be a paper tiger than a bodybag. Ohio State AND Wisconsin. Who scheduled these games?
I was looking at MaxPreps to see where Mililani was ranked, and noticed that the site doesn’t know who the coach is.
Baseball season is just around the corner in February, 2015. Great seats, good prices, and a good environment makes for a great experience. Looking forward to a good season for UH Rainbow baseball. Let’s go Bow’s!

I hope the next AD will be able to promote the UH Athletics program a little better.
I just done finished reading a lots of your commitment. To make easy for the state to shut down Aloha Stadium and build a State housing for low income peoples to live there or homeless people too. At the same time shut down the University of Hawaii campus!. It will help make money for Hawaii. Hawaii shouldn’t have any football stadium for the NFL and bowl game. NFL should cancel all the remaining schedule for the PRO BOWL and NCAA should do the same thing too!. Hawaii should only have high school football!. If the kids from Hawaii wants to play football in the state. They can’t there should joined the army and service there country!. If there a war they’re could go to the front line

Ohio St and Wisconsin in 2015:
If UH could some how get 2 FCS teams to replace these two teams for next year, that may help UH in their win-loss record. I know they need the money. But, UH should play against teams with similar financial athletic budgets.
The sad part of this story is that it is a reflection of “corporate america”. Corporations, unfortunately, are not run by people who understand and know the business but by financial people who have no clue what that business is about. Sadly Ben Jay is not an Athletics guy but a Financial guy. What UH needs is an AD who understands athletics, is separate from the idiots who behinds the scenes think they run the program, and has a financial person behind the scenes. My biggest fear is what is Ben Jay going to do to sabotage UH before he leaves ????? He should not be allowed to make any major decisions (i.e. hiring) w/ the exception of Benjy Taylor.
Me not think BJ would.. me think he is professional in his duties…just misguided sum times…n not into ‘polynesia’ culture to much…with a mix of few other nationalities..
If is true…his family has moved back…then me can understand… maybe how his wife n children maybe ‘suffered’ from comments on here..n on call in shows…but most of that was his own undoing…n kids can n will be vicious with teasing etc…not know it was happening or wife was just not happy here…

The Colorado, Ohio State, UC Davis, and Wisconsin games are in September …
UC Davis is ranked 13th of 13 in the Big Sky (FCS), so that is one likely win early in the season. We play Louisiana-Monroe (7th of 11 in Sun Belt) in late November, so there is another likely win late in the season. As long as UH doesn’t improve much, there should be 3 exciting and winnable MWC games (UNLV, New Mexico, and San Jose State) against those struggling teams too. On the other hand, if UH leadership gets serious and augments the coaching staff, they might have exciting games against San Diego State, Nevada, Air Force, and Boise State; I would pay more to see that.

Someone mentioned in an earlier post that maybe Norm Chow and Ben Jay had a Jan Ken Po to decide who would leave first. And Ben Jay was the loser in that contest. Or, was he the winner?
Robert Bley-Vroman was clumsy with his choice of words. He started to praise Jay, but said it in a critical way– like he liked some things Jay did, but not all, then corrected it and said all. At the end he talked about Jay getting the program going in the right direction or something like that then he clarified the program will keep going but we have to do it without the deficits. Sounds like he wants to see the athletic department live within its means– but does he mean without any subsidy from the University?
Well for coach.. his career is just about over n BJ’s is just starting really… so guess BJ is the winner in that contest…

Rainbows, Warriors, or Rainbow Warriors, I will continue to call them Warriors or Wahine. I’m more of a Warrior name fan than Rainbows but it doesn’t mean I won’t support the team even if the nickname were Tigers, Antelopes, or even Brussels Sprouts.

Before selecting the next UH AD, those in power might like to read a study by a Cal Berkeley professor, wherein it states,
“Schools with skilled administrators may attract donations, applicants, and coaching talent (selection bias), and surges in donations or applications may have a direct impact on athletic success (reverse causality).”

My suggestion for next AD is…. drum roll… Jim Livengood.
Livengood is vastly experienced and has proven to be an excellent fundraiser everywhere he’s been at, even at UNLV. Regarding his most recent AD job at UNLV, he was unceremoniously forced to “retire” by then-UNLV President Neal Smatresk. There was a big rift between Livengood and Smatresk that was pretty public. According to UNLV alumni, they mostly thought Livengood was doing a good job (except for football). Smatresk has since ditched UNLV to be president at North Texas, which is not an upgrade.
What Livengood did accomplish at UNLV was pretty good for his fairly short time there. He coordinated funding and was able to get The Mendenhall Center (a top notch $13 million basketball facilities) completed in 2012.
Going back further, he had a long reign at Univ. of Arizona where he helped them to very good success. Earlier, he was at Washington St, where he was also very well liked and did a great job fundraising while there as well as trailblazing gender equality programs.
Of course the biggest questions would be if he’s interested (he’s turned down several offers from various schools), and would he be willing to subject himself to a university is clearly dysfunctional from the top.

Actually when I saw the names thrown out for the AD’s position, I thought KALE ANE would be a good AD.
He knows football, he has played in the NFL, personable, also teaches, can really open wide the pipeline to the Punahou players, well connected with the community and by other high school coaches (remember that article about Ane’s relationship with the Mililani Head Coach)?
And he is well connected with the so-called Punahou Mafia! 🙂
170.. While Ane does have associate AD experience at Punahou, I don’t know how that would translate to UH. I don’t think it’s going to be possible to get Punahou donors to kick money toward UH. My in-laws are Punahou alums and parents and they say UH is generally viewed as a last resort for Punahou grads or a soft landing place for kids that go to a great mainland school but end up transferring back home.
Ane seems to have a good demeanor and carries himself well, but HS athletics is a far bigger and far different animal than Collegiate athletics. Plus there’s the ever present issue of a candidate wanting to work under this UH leadership.
No small wonder the turmoil.
