I doubt we will ever know the full truth of it but what I wanna know is how much of the play calling is fully made by Wynn and how much of it does Chow have an influence? Especially when the play calling becomes extremely conservative, it seems maybe Chow is giving Wynn parameters as far as what he can call. I don’t know if that’s true or not but that’s the feeling I get.

I’m not advocating for either side of whether Wynn should or should not continue to be the “play caller” but one has to wonder if the responsibility of what people call as a lack of effective play calling is fully on him.

6. Maybe ST can ask for us… Because until I hear otherwise, Wynn needs to go. If were going to credit him for the Schroeder turn around last year when he took over play calling…. Then I am going to blame him this year for his boring, predictable game planning that opposing teams made it known by speaking at press conferences and showing their hand to us. Still no adjustment. We let UNLV back in the game by going conservative. You would think with nothing to lose going into Fresno, you would go all out and see if Woolsey can win you a game…

Hawaii basically pulled a New York Jets on MNF. Instead of find out if Geno Smith is growing, you decide to hand off the ball all game hoping your D can hold on.

Colorado St. (3-9) hires Jim McElwain.

Fast Forward- Colorado State is now 10-2 while Hawaii is 4-9. McElwain is being targeted by Florida.

So when people want to makes excuses for Norm, just remember that Colorado St. was worse than Hawaii at the time. They recruited better, kept right players from transferring, built a program the right way.

You gotta wonder though how much the system that each coach brought with them to their new jobs and whether that system was better suited for the talent that they inherited. I’m not saying its an excuse and a pass for the lack of success, but one has to question if whoever chose Norm Chow really thought about that when choosing the new coach. June Jones had instant success but perhaps his style offense was better suited for what they had at the time thus helped them to produce more quickly. You can also apply that to Fresno State and Colorado State. The systems that their coaches brought in maybe allowed for an easier transition. But of course in the end no matter what as a coach, you gotta produce and win so its a tough situation.

Like a lawyer, a playcaller has to do what they can to minimize their liability. When the liability is the QB position, it puts the offense in a world of hurt. That’s why an NFL QB only gets 13 pass attempts in a game. When the run game is working, a bad QB will essentially disappear with the playcalling.

Just tossing numbers around:

Woosley averaged about 6 ypa, which is terrible.
CSU’s Grayson averages about 9.8 ypa, which is very good.
Marcus Mariota averages about 10.4, which is excellent.

NCAA leader in pass yards, WKU’s Brandon Doughty averages 8.5 ypa.
Colt Brennan in 2006 averaged 9.9 ypa (9.0 ypa for UH career).
Timmy Chang averaged 7.0 ypa for his UH career.
Derek Carr averaged 7.9 ypa
David Carr averaged 8.3 ypa (9.1 ypa his Sr year).

— Of course, the style of offense changes the scale you grade YPA efficiency as the spread offenses utilize short passes/screens in lieu of a standard run game.

When Hawaii beat San Jose St. Woolsey completed 9-16 passes… You can complain about him all you want, but when you have training wheels on him and don’t let him get into any kind of rhythm, what do you expect. How can he take over a game when they don’t air it out? The only time he has a chance to do anything is once Hawaii gets down 2+ scores and we kind of have no chance by then. If Hawaii defense was shutting out Fresno, Woolsey probably doesn’t throw more than 20 passes.. Just the nature of our coaches.

31. So basically you agree that change is needed. Woolsey with the right coaches, system, and players has the talent. His deep ball has gotten a lot more accurate from day 1… passes need to be called on 1st down. there needs to be balance… So many times this year I see Hawaii calling play action on 2nd and 10 with 0 run game established… Automatic sack on Woolsey

Jeezy… Woosley went 4 games in a row throwing sub 50% before getting benched. Those are the types of numbers that make any coach put training wheels back on. May I remind you that I’m not defending Chow, I’m talking from a general coaching standpoint.

Witteck will be the QB. Woosley has a ton of work to do and didnt show us anything this year to make us believe he is the guy. One of the biggest disappointments about Chow is the horrific QB play we have got since he has arrived. Not once had I felt confident about the position. Hopefully Wittek can lead us to a bowl game.

When you think of “iron man” football, the punter does not usually come to mind.
But Iron Man Harding is also Mr. Timex… deserving of all honors to be bestowed.

Much of the recent commentary on Coach Chow is invariably focused on his ability, or rather perceived inability to change. As this is a topic that I have included on some of my previous research endeavors, I will add the following pithy comments:

• The key to sustainable behavioral change, it to focus on the goal, not the method to the tactics. Thus, in Coach Chow’s case this might include placing an emphasis on better outcomes and productivity rather than him not being able to control the play calling.
• When presented with any potential change, we (all of us)) usually focus on the potential losses much more heavily, the potential positive outcomes. That is to say, Chow must be cemented that he has to “do it his way”, not allowing for the posit that there may be much better outcomes to relay or delegate to another party.
• Change is a campaign, not a single decision. In short, this means, you cannot just make an announcement of change, it must be surrounded by a support system of change, as well markers and metrics that both measure and cultivate the change.
• If you are stuck in the middle of change and just going about it in middling way, well, it will always look like failure. In business schools, this is called Kanter’s law–everything looks like a failure in the middle. Everyone loves inspiring beginnings and happy endings; it is just the middles that involve this axiom— this law of management (and life) dictates that any major changes slide into lethargy following the pep rallies and press conferences, as grand promises gave way to the tough challenges of implementation. That’s the point in the middle when even true believers have doubts–e.g. get to a fork in the road–take it!
• All new initiatives – big new government directions, business turnarounds, new venture start-ups, new products, or internal process changes – can run into trouble before reaching fruition. Troubles increase with the number of ways the initiative differs from current approaches. The more innovation, the more problems. Problems tempt people to give up, forget it, and chase the next enticing rainbow. But stop the effort too soon, and by definition it is a failure. Stay with it through its hurdles, make appropriate adjustments, and you could be on the way to success. Though some ideas are dead-ends, many simply need mid-course corrections.

In short, if and when Chow changes, he needs to go full board—holomua!!

no more PPV or football tickets. will boycott uh football until chow leaves. their recruiting class will have many change their minds. they know that coming to Hawaii, their chances of playing for a winning program with good coaches are poor, which will affect their professional aspirations. how many players have gone into the nfl in the past 3 years? hence, next year’s team will again be horrible because of the lack of talent and poor head coach.

I gotta agree with Bobby Curran though that UH is not going to buyout Chow’s contract, so pretty much the only way a change is made after this season is if the money comes from elsewhere like a private donor. Maybe the Iolani mafia can step up and get it done (joking of course). I don’t think the choice of whether to keep or let Chow go is up to Ben Jay anyway. Pretty sure the Chancellor and President are gonna be in more control with that.

That’s not how it usually is but I think especially with all these “Wonder Blunder” type events that have been going on, I think upper campus has been losing confidence in the athletic department and thus have been stepping in. That seemed apparent with the Gib Arnold firing as the Chancellor was said to have been a big part of that decision. I think Ben Jay may give his opinion of what to do with Chow but upper campus is going to have the last say. As usual too many people want their “hands in the pot”.

Judging by the sequence of events that happened prior to Gib Arnold’s firing, I get the impression that Ben Jay is a puppet to Lassner, Bley-Vroman, and the BOR mainly in attempt to keep his job. I think he quickly figured out how UH leadership works behind the scenes and is basically doing what he has to do not get fired.

Remember, Jay worked with Arnold on his extention, agreed to terms, drew up papers, signed Arnold’s new contract and sent it up for the Chancellor to finalize. It was at that time Chancellor Apple was coincidentally removed and the contract was never executed…then the chain of events happened and Gib was fired.

By the way, still no sign of the NCAA report or any allegations made.

In my opinion I think the firing of Gib Arnold will be proven warranted once the NCAA releases its statement, findings, and punishments. The public’s opinion of him will probably change very quickly as well. I don’t think the way they did it was very professional though. I wish the NCAA would hurry up and come out with it though because it would be a shame if the bball team has a really good season and has a real good chance to make post season and then all of a sudden the NCAA comes down with the hammer near the ending of the season and the team becomes ineligible (which I assume will be one of the punishments).

No other Warrior was selected to the first or second team.

which leads me to the next topic, which is unrelated to football, but an important part of our lives – perhaps the grand jury in Furgerson is correct, but I question the “training and philosophy” of police officer training – under what circumstance(s) is an officer to use “deadly or lethal” force against an unarmed person? is it the training/philosophy that should be looked at rather than the circumstances surrounding the shooting?

in the military, we are taught to “shoot to kill” or use of “deadly force”; not aim for a leg or arm to stop a person who does not obey your command(s) such as hands up or stop where you are/don’t move – if this is a circumstance to use “deadly force” somewhere, be it the individual officer or his/her police academy training or both that should be reviewed.

this principle also applies to a coach or player wherein the team loses many games.

In spite of his late season heroics, Ikaika continues to have difficulty deciding when and to whom he should throw to. Thus he finds himself having to scramble to avoid sacks. And some of his sacks were because the RB failed to make a block or failed to pick up a block. The O-line gave Ikaika more than enough time to throw to a receiver or simply to throw it away. Won’t know about Wittek until he plays (for UH) under the lights. Maybe Beau Reilly will emerge as the starter. Should be interesting.

I miss Hinshaw as Chancellor. She definitely had a passion and interest for the athletic department. I had hope that once Greenwood was gone, she might have been considered for the position again. The new Chancellor worries me. Coming from the language arts dept, I question whether he even has any interest in helping to improve the athletic department at all.

A-House, I’m sure for police deadly force is shoot to kill. You use as much force to overcome the threat. Now what’s reasonable force? That depends on the situation and judgement. You make that split decision and there is no turning back. It’s your life or the perp.

#90 I agree and thus our not understanding the current financial plight of the entire system and only looking at football puts the athletic program on a slippery slope. A successful boycott of next year’s football program because we were not entertained enough may be the trigger that turns off the lights completely.

The entire system is in the red, not just athletics. If we choose to vent our frustration through non support we could be cutting off our nose to spite our face.

We need to support our team, as difficult as it is, this is the only game in town (aside from high school and pop Warner). I am a fan and I will always support UH football, even when it’s bad as I don’t like the alternative of having nothing.

I’m afraid the landscape is changing in college sports. UAB is the first in what will be more universities that can not compete with the TV teams.

June Jones’ idea to leave the Fall to the big moneyed teams and move the mid-majors to the Spring has merit. It may be the only way to save sport.

Scott Harding will probably be the most difficult Warrior to replace in the history of our program…help us Scott find your replacement “down under”…

Interesting outreach today from UH Athletics. If I understood the call correctly, Ben Jay wants to make sure all Rainbow Wahine Volleyball season ticket holders who are also Rainbow Warrior season ticket holders get their 10% refund on Rainbow Wahine Volleyball tickets. Outreach is good. I hope it continues, and evolves to encourage more two way interactions.

Florida: The Gators are in the latter stages of negotiations with Jim McElwain on Tuesday night and could formally introduce him as the next head coach as early as Wednesday, according to Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports.

Forget this June Jones talk. He left us high to dry and he completely abandoned SMU this year. They are going to go 0-12. I’d rather have ben jay coach the team. If Chow doesn’t get it done this year we should look to hire a young gun who is a top recuiter. Ie- jeff ulbrich, Adrian Klemm or Utah’s dc

Couple tings…..congrats to Mr. Harding for well deserved recognition. On the flip side it speaks volumes to the talent we currently have or the development of that talent. Don’t know if that archaic requirement of two years of Alegebra is still in place but I can almost guarantee many playmakers at college level know about Ale and Bra’s but Alegebra—-no way. The only way to winning is with talent and some of it is needed now! Bigger faster and stronger makes coaching easier. Here is to a good recruiting season. Lastly shortly after the new year comes pen in hand I will send my support to Na Koa. A very sad day if I live to see the demise of my Warriors……Go Warriors

The rumor mill for CSU coach McElwain to Florida is heating up. Apparently the only thing holding it up is McElwain’s buyout number from his hand new extension. Sounds like Florida is trying to negotiate that number down a little.

CSU’s handling of McElwain’s contact situation is the textbook way to minimize risk for the University when they can’t afford a big money contact and they realize that their coach might catch the attention of bigger schools. I’m sure this is happening way sooner than CSU hoped for but they smartly reworked McElwain’s contract knowing he has SEC ties and multiple high profile jobs have become available (Florida, Nebraska, and Michigan).

The bad news for CSU is obviously they lose the architect that has built the program into a contender, but that sting is lessened by a cool $7.5 million buyout (or whatever that number ends up being but likely will be significant). Then it’s up to CSU leadership to decide if they want to reinvest this buyout money on a good coach if one is interested, spend $ on upgrading facilities, or both… Or maybe decide to put on a Stevie Wonder concert series if they so wish.

In any case, CSU has handled McElwain perfectly. It appears they may make $7.5 million from the buyout clause and they haven’t likely had to spend additional $1 since the new pay salary probably doesn’t start until January.

It’s a good news, good news situation for CSU now.

Hmm, CSU contract with McElwain perhaps isn’t as good for the school as first thought. That’s what happens when you have a school president involved in contract negotiations.

If no one thinks that there could be a chance of UH football going away you should pay close attention to what’s happening at UAB right now…Sad to think we played and lost to them in the Hawaii bowl and that they had a petty good receiver by the name of Roddy White on that team…this is why we need to support our program through the ups and downs

Graham, any of the fellows you mentioned, would be have to be willing to take a 250-350k paycut to come UH. Factor the tenuous nature of the UHAD finances and leaving programs that are consistently in the top 20 programs in the nation, and the attendant accoutrements (e.g. bowl games, national televised prime-time coverage, great facilities and and recruits)–I am remain pragmatically dubious if we could pull this off….
