    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

Conrats! Well deserved for Scott. Can’t imagine anyone else who would come close.

Well deserved honor for Harding and the others too.

  4. MattyBoy December 2, 2014 8:47 am

Congrats Scott! Well deserved for sure!

  5. letsgowarriors December 2, 2014 8:50 am

more importantly, when are we relieving Wynn of his playcalling duties and posting the OC job vacancy?

id like to hire an OC prior to February 4th!

  6. Andrew December 2, 2014 9:00 am

    5.

I doubt we will ever know the full truth of it but what I wanna know is how much of the play calling is fully made by Wynn and how much of it does Chow have an influence? Especially when the play calling becomes extremely conservative, it seems maybe Chow is giving Wynn parameters as far as what he can call. I don’t know if that’s true or not but that’s the feeling I get.

The offensive coordinator is Norm Chow. He will be the offensive coordinator until he is no longer head football coach. It is what it is.

  8. Andrew December 2, 2014 9:02 am

I’m not advocating for either side of whether Wynn should or should not continue to be the “play caller” but one has to wonder if the responsibility of what people call as a lack of effective play calling is fully on him.

  9. Old Diver December 2, 2014 9:07 am

Got to remember, Wynn is calling plays within a system and play calling philosophy created by Norm Chow. Fans at BYU, USC, Tennessee, UCLA and Utah had the same boring and conservative complaints about Chow. In essences blaming Wynn for the play calling is comparable to blaming the bag boy for the price of beans.

  10. haka December 2, 2014 9:08 am

    Congrats Scott!
    Maybe see ya on Sundays!
Shout out to all the Warrior honorees!

Wish Scott had a big game last Saturday.

  12. Former UH Athlete December 2, 2014 9:23 am

    Harding fully deserves this honor.

  13. Former UH Athlete December 2, 2014 9:26 am

Boo MWC for not giving the STPOY to Harding.

Kickers are boring… Harding made punting fun for the first time ever.

  14. jeezy33 December 2, 2014 9:28 am

    6. Maybe ST can ask for us… Because until I hear otherwise, Wynn needs to go. If were going to credit him for the Schroeder turn around last year when he took over play calling…. Then I am going to blame him this year for his boring, predictable game planning that opposing teams made it known by speaking at press conferences and showing their hand to us. Still no adjustment. We let UNLV back in the game by going conservative. You would think with nothing to lose going into Fresno, you would go all out and see if Woolsey can win you a game…

Hawaii basically pulled a New York Jets on MNF. Instead of find out if Geno Smith is growing, you decide to hand off the ball all game hoping your D can hold on.

  15. jeezy33 December 2, 2014 9:31 am

    8. It’s not only the play calling. It’s the preparation during the week leading up to the game and half time adjustments. This years team couldn’t even execute timely trick plays properly. Being prepared is half the battle. This team was never prepared offensively. Whether it’s penalties, WRs dropping balls, bad play calling, QB missing throws, this offense was never prepared leading up to game time. Utah St. looked more prepared than Hawaii with a FR QB they planned on redshirting. The kid probably had 1 week notice and 1 week to work with the starters.

  16. jeezy33 December 2, 2014 9:38 am

It wasn’t very long ago at the end of 2011…..

Hawaii football (6-7) team hires Norm Chow to be next HC… Supposedly to chase championships…

Colorado St. (3-9) hires Jim McElwain.

Fast Forward- Colorado State is now 10-2 while Hawaii is 4-9. McElwain is being targeted by Florida.

So when people want to makes excuses for Norm, just remember that Colorado St. was worse than Hawaii at the time. They recruited better, kept right players from transferring, built a program the right way.

  17. Andrew December 2, 2014 9:43 am

    15.

Oh yeah I agree on questioning the preparedness of the team each week. I was just specifically focusing on the issue of play calling.

  18. Fei Jai December 2, 2014 9:50 am

    Congrats, Scott! Well deserved!!

  19. UH4eva December 2, 2014 9:50 am

Do not forget that Fresno also Rutyger

  20. Andrew December 2, 2014 9:51 am

    16.

You gotta wonder though how much the system that each coach brought with them to their new jobs and whether that system was better suited for the talent that they inherited. I’m not saying its an excuse and a pass for the lack of success, but one has to question if whoever chose Norm Chow really thought about that when choosing the new coach. June Jones had instant success but perhaps his style offense was better suited for what they had at the time thus helped them to produce more quickly. You can also apply that to Fresno State and Colorado State. The systems that their coaches brought in maybe allowed for an easier transition. But of course in the end no matter what as a coach, you gotta produce and win so its a tough situation.

  21. Andrew December 2, 2014 9:54 am

    20
Just realized I missed something in that first sentence. Please excuse my bad grammar..haha

“You gotta wonder though how much the system that each coach brought with them to their new jobs affected the success or lack thereof and whether that system was better suited for the talent that they inherited.”**

  22. Former UH Athlete December 2, 2014 9:54 am

14… Did Hawaii pull a NY Jets? Or did the NY Jets pull a Hawaii?

Like a lawyer, a playcaller has to do what they can to minimize their liability. When the liability is the QB position, it puts the offense in a world of hurt. That’s why an NFL QB only gets 13 pass attempts in a game. When the run game is working, a bad QB will essentially disappear with the playcalling.

  23. azwarrior22 December 2, 2014 9:55 am

I’m going to use the third person here. Our HC should do a self-evaluation of his performance over the past 3 years and see if it warrants a passing grade. I think the majority of fans have spoken and it grades an ‘F’. Now let’s see what the UHAD has to say. If our AD is a bean counter, then you can’t afford to keep him for another year. Loss of more season ticket renewals and declining gate receipts, no chance of Hawaii Bowl invitation, and future does not look bright with daunting 2015 schedule. Just look how far this program has dropped during our current HC’s tenure. We need a new HC that can energize this team, recruit well, compete in the MWC, and bring back the faithful fans. We need a HC that can chase championships, not dream about them.

  24. Former UH Athlete December 2, 2014 10:02 am

    Just tossing numbers around:

Woosley averaged about 6 ypa, which is terrible.
CSU’s Grayson averages about 9.8 ypa, which is very good.
Marcus Mariota averages about 10.4, which is excellent.

NCAA leader in pass yards, WKU’s Brandon Doughty averages 8.5 ypa.
Colt Brennan in 2006 averaged 9.9 ypa (9.0 ypa for UH career).
Timmy Chang averaged 7.0 ypa for his UH career.
    Derek Carr averaged 7.9 ypa
David Carr averaged 8.3 ypa (9.1 ypa his Sr year).

    — Of course, the style of offense changes the scale you grade YPA efficiency as the spread offenses utilize short passes/screens in lieu of a standard run game.

  25. jeezy33 December 2, 2014 10:03 am

    22. What does it matter when you have nothing to lose? Woolsey showed that when you take training wheels off, he can make plays. He made plays in the 2nd half when Hawaii went up tempo. He made plays vs UNLV once Hawaii blew the lead and had to go to 2 minute offense.

If anything, you get to evaluate when putting more on the table for your QB.

Texas Tech had nothing to lose vs Baylor. They have a huge liability in the secondary. But they knew they had to stop the run and pressure the QB. So they stacked the box, blitzed all game, and trusted their guys to cover the speedy Baylor WRs. Rally fell short, but at least they went out swinging.

  26. jeezy33 December 2, 2014 10:04 am

    24. What do you expect when you run on 1st and 2nd down and faced with 3rd and 8??? You do realize it is much easier to throw on early downs when defense doesn’t know whats coming right? Did you not watch the 2nd half when we made plays airing it out??? Fresno was not in prevent either.

  27. jeezy33 December 2, 2014 10:06 am

FUHA, try research all the QBs under Norm Chow from UCLA till now… Please see if you can find me a QB he developed that completed 60% of his throws with a good YPA like you are mentioning. Coaches cripple QBs at times… Just look at Mark Sanchez with Rex Ryan, and Sanchez with Chip.

  28. Former UH Athlete December 2, 2014 10:06 am

    14, 22…

adding this in: When the you have a bad QB and the run game isn’t working either… You break records for most punts in a year along with a 1st Team All MWC Punter.

So there is a silver lining.

  29. jeezy33 December 2, 2014 10:07 am

    28. When you have a terrible/ inexperienced offensive minded coach, with bad play calling, bad O line play, below average WRs, you have a bad QB.

  30. jeezy33 December 2, 2014 10:12 am

    FUHA..

When Hawaii beat San Jose St. Woolsey completed 9-16 passes… You can complain about him all you want, but when you have training wheels on him and don’t let him get into any kind of rhythm, what do you expect. How can he take over a game when they don’t air it out? The only time he has a chance to do anything is once Hawaii gets down 2+ scores and we kind of have no chance by then. If Hawaii defense was shutting out Fresno, Woolsey probably doesn’t throw more than 20 passes.. Just the nature of our coaches.

  31. Former UH Athlete December 2, 2014 10:12 am

27.. I’ve never said Chow was a QB guru. I’ve said a few times in this blog site that Chow has been mislabeled by media as a QB Guru.

He’s had incredibly talented QBs play under him, but they were already great from when Chow got them. All Chow really had to do was make the game plan and call the plays… which is what OCs do. In fact Chow hasn’t been a QB coach since 1999, so it’s been a long time since his responsibility was specifically working with QB on a daily basis.

Let me look up some more #’s,,,

  32. jeezy33 December 2, 2014 10:14 am

    31. So basically you agree that change is needed. Woolsey with the right coaches, system, and players has the talent. His deep ball has gotten a lot more accurate from day 1… passes need to be called on 1st down. there needs to be balance… So many times this year I see Hawaii calling play action on 2nd and 10 with 0 run game established… Automatic sack on Woolsey

  33. papajoe2 December 2, 2014 10:15 am

Andrew #20~ Dick Tomey brought a system similar to that of coach Chow, but he being new, and UH being new to Div 1, it worked or a while until the opponents caught on to his tendacies. He was conservative, with his the motto of keep it close so we have a chance in the 4th quarter. When Bob Wagner took over, I remember his 1st game with a 3rd down in their own half of the field, UH threw a bomb (although incomplete, it was very different) whereas Tomey would have run it up the middle. He brought in Paul Johnson with his option offense. Then Von Appen, who was so mixed up, he had 3 offensive coordinators in 3 years. Bring in June Jones, with I’d like to pass on every down if I could system. Both June and Bob figured out that Hawaii couldn’t compete in D1 with the athletes that would play in Hawaii, playing smash mouth football. I personally think that Wagner’s team went down hill when Johnson “lost” his play book. Bring in Chow playing smash mouth football, running up the middle, trying to overpower the opponent. It just doesn’t work with the talent in Hawaii or recruits wanting to come to Hawaii. History repeating? Although I wouldn’t want Jones to coach here, in his offense, we could score on any 1 play from anywhere on the field. Back to Chow. Very predictable and boring.

  34. Former UH Athlete December 2, 2014 10:15 am

Jeezy… Woosley went 4 games in a row throwing sub 50% before getting benched. Those are the types of numbers that make any coach put training wheels back on. May I remind you that I’m not defending Chow, I’m talking from a general coaching standpoint.

  35. jeezy33 December 2, 2014 10:19 am

    34. He was awful…. But are we going to judge him based on those 4 games or the most recent ones in which he has grown? I rather focus on his improvement from those games… If you see my posts during August/ September, I couldn’t stand Woolsey. But I am an honest person and will acknowledge when a player improves… He has a ways to go but him and Kemp improved the most on offense IMO from game 1 till now.

  36. graham December 2, 2014 10:27 am

Witteck will be the QB. Woosley has a ton of work to do and didnt show us anything this year to make us believe he is the guy. One of the biggest disappointments about Chow is the horrific QB play we have got since he has arrived. Not once had I felt confident about the position. Hopefully Wittek can lead us to a bowl game.

  37. jeezy33 December 2, 2014 10:34 am

    36. Woolsey has a ton of work to do but lets not pretend like Wittek doesn’t… What has he done besides being a 4 star recruit?

  38. SteveM December 2, 2014 10:43 am

    Good morning everyone!

    Congrats to Scott Harding!
When you think of “iron man” football, the punter does not usually come to mind.
But Iron Man Harding is also Mr. Timex… deserving of all honors to be bestowed.

WHAT??? Yesterday # 127….no me rather see him at home in his
rocking chair…he he he…maybe watching a wide open offense
scoring points for a nice change of pace…next year…same old same old
    ba humbug…

  40. boolakanaka December 2, 2014 11:02 am

Much of the recent commentary on Coach Chow is invariably focused on his ability, or rather perceived inability to change. As this is a topic that I have included on some of my previous research endeavors, I will add the following pithy comments:

โ€ข The key to sustainable behavioral change, it to focus on the goal, not the method to the tactics. Thus, in Coach Chowโ€™s case this might include placing an emphasis on better outcomes and productivity rather than him not being able to control the play calling.
โ€ข When presented with any potential change, we (all of us)) usually focus on the potential losses much more heavily, the potential positive outcomes. That is to say, Chow must be cemented that he has to โ€œdo it his wayโ€, not allowing for the posit that there may be much better outcomes to relay or delegate to another party.
โ€ข Change is a campaign, not a single decision. In short, this means, you cannot just make an announcement of change, it must be surrounded by a support system of change, as well markers and metrics that both measure and cultivate the change.
โ€ข If you are stuck in the middle of change and just going about it in middling way, well, it will always look like failure. In business schools, this is called Kanterโ€™s law–everything looks like a failure in the middle. Everyone loves inspiring beginnings and happy endings; it is just the middles that involve this axiom— this law of management (and life) dictates that any major changes slide into lethargy following the pep rallies and press conferences, as grand promises gave way to the tough challenges of implementation. Thatโ€™s the point in the middle when even true believers have doubts–e.g. get to a fork in the road–take it!
โ€ข All new initiatives โ€“ big new government directions, business turnarounds, new venture start-ups, new products, or internal process changes โ€“ can run into trouble before reaching fruition. Troubles increase with the number of ways the initiative differs from current approaches. The more innovation, the more problems. Problems tempt people to give up, forget it, and chase the next enticing rainbow. But stop the effort too soon, and by definition it is a failure. Stay with it through its hurdles, make appropriate adjustments, and you could be on the way to success. Though some ideas are dead-ends, many simply need mid-course corrections.

In short, if and when Chow changes, he needs to go full board—holomua!!

  41. Former UH Athlete December 2, 2014 11:09 am

    QBs under Norm Chow:
Did not include his 1 year at Utah b/c Utah’s 1st year in Pac-12.
Did not include Tennessee Titans b/c Vince Young is an idiot.
Primary starter stats only, unless 2 QBs split several starts.
Got too tired to look beyond 1995, if you want more do it yourself.
If I made a typo somewhere… tough luck.

no more PPV or football tickets. will boycott uh football until chow leaves. their recruiting class will have many change their minds. they know that coming to Hawaii, their chances of playing for a winning program with good coaches are poor, which will affect their professional aspirations. how many players have gone into the nfl in the past 3 years? hence, next year’s team will again be horrible because of the lack of talent and poor head coach.

  43. Z December 2, 2014 11:37 am

Dropped passes will hurt any quarterback. Way too many this season. Joey will be gone so hopefully coach will change his offense to suit remaining players. I think coach built offense around Joey and when he got hurt coach tried to fill with Lakalaka and he got hurt. If he intends to keep pounding our runningbacks we will need to have more available.

Interesting how Clune? Said that they will be looking for more speed and playmakers. That is exactly what we need.

  44. Andrew December 2, 2014 11:43 am

I gotta agree with Bobby Curran though that UH is not going to buyout Chow’s contract, so pretty much the only way a change is made after this season is if the money comes from elsewhere like a private donor. Maybe the Iolani mafia can step up and get it done (joking of course). I don’t think the choice of whether to keep or let Chow go is up to Ben Jay anyway. Pretty sure the Chancellor and President are gonna be in more control with that.

  45. Bo December 2, 2014 11:58 am

Whittek is the answer at Qb.
He would of been Awsome this year,
but USC Didnt play nice and he had
    to sit out this year.
Can’t wait to see him next yr
    along with Pedroza,Kemp,Stubbelfield,
    and last yr WR recruits.

  46. Rodney December 2, 2014 12:05 pm

    Don’t believe Ikaika would
make a bad back up to Whittek.

  47. st. anthony trojan December 2, 2014 12:21 pm

ANDREW… me agree you…he is make a spoil Iolani reputation.. they should buy him out.. maybe he give them a ‘discount’ he he he

  48. A-House December 2, 2014 12:28 pm

    #43:

based on your statement, the organizational chart for the UHAD to hire/fire coaches rests with the Chancellor’s Office and President?

they are the most ignorant of sports – why would Ben J accept the UHAD position if he had no “authority” to hire/fire his coaches? he makes recommendation(s) to upper campus and wait for their decision?

also, why does the BOR have to approve a coach’s contract – IMHO, that’s micro-managing – their only focuis should be the Pres – hotdog new BOR members, change the rules by which you operate!!!!!!!!!

is this an “indication” of how badly things operate/mismanaged at UH-Manoa?

  49. jeezy33 December 2, 2014 12:32 pm

Is it that hard to spell Wittek?

I mean it’s 1 less letter to type.

  50. A-House December 2, 2014 12:34 pm

will Wittek really be the QB savior in 2015?

if the OL is like this year, he will be running for his life – if receivers keep dropping balls there will be little movement of the chains – if the secondary does not improve – many more long passes for TD – in 2014, one DB accounted for 7 or 8 of the 10 long passes that went for TDs.

I lack the confidence that the coaches will sign the “players” with speed and are “players” – those will go to better programs be it at the mid-level or BCS schools — truly, why come to Hawaii?

  51. Willie December 2, 2014 12:54 pm

#16, McElwain was a proven college head coach prior to the CSU stint. He had three NCAA National Championships at the lower level. Key here is that he was an experienced leader with stellar results.

Now Chow was this renowned offensive genius that developed QBs for the NFL. But before Hawaii, he was never chosen for the head coaching job, never selected over many other candidates! Makes you wonder if the behind the scene network did not want Chow if he ever would have gotten the slot at UH.

Remember that Donovan wanted Kottner, who had a long resume as a HC. I believe he is an OC on a NFL team?

  52. Andrew December 2, 2014 12:56 pm

    46.

That’s not how it usually is but I think especially with all these “Wonder Blunder” type events that have been going on, I think upper campus has been losing confidence in the athletic department and thus have been stepping in. That seemed apparent with the Gib Arnold firing as the Chancellor was said to have been a big part of that decision. I think Ben Jay may give his opinion of what to do with Chow but upper campus is going to have the last say. As usual too many people want their “hands in the pot”.

  53. Rodney December 2, 2014 12:57 pm

    Whitek Next year he will
be out best player like Joey was
    for us this year(Scotty too)
So I think one could expect that
Next year we will pass alot more on
    1st down and 2nd down.

  54. Willie December 2, 2014 12:57 pm

Should be “wanted Chow”‘ sorry for the typo.

  55. Andrew December 2, 2014 1:00 pm

    46.

Bobby Curran also pointed out that upper campus may see the firing of Chow as a PR issue. The University is already have budget issues with the decreasing in classes and the budget cuts of teaching assistants, so if they were to let Chow go and continue to pay another coach that is not even working anymore (like the OC we were going to have) it would be another hit on the image of the University.

I don’t agree at all with that way of thinking because I think if they really don’t think Chow is for the job, they should just let him go rather than keep him because they are worried of reactions.

  56. haka December 2, 2014 1:01 pm

Is it that hard to leave your ever expanding ego at the door?

  57. Andrew December 2, 2014 1:01 pm

Keeping a coach and taking more hits in ticket sales, donations, and sponsors will of course most likely add up to a lot more than a buyout

  58. jeezy33 December 2, 2014 1:05 pm

    55. Most fans realize it…. AD, on other hand is incompetent.

  59. Andrew December 2, 2014 1:10 pm

    56.

He never really made his intentions on the matter very clear though. I still think his hands are tied on this one and upper campus is pretty much gonna tell him what to do.

  60. Andrew December 2, 2014 1:10 pm

    56.

But I do think the AD should be on the hot seat as well and should be evaluated

  61. Rodney December 2, 2014 1:17 pm

    Maybe Chow should be AD?
    Hire June Jones HC?

  62. Buffoman December 2, 2014 1:17 pm

I asked this before, would having someone like Vince Passes (sp?) brought on as the qb coach be a bad move? He seems to have done well over a long period of time at the high school level. Wouldn’t that free up the young offensive coordinator to better sculpt the offense? As a disclaimer I have never coached football beyond youth flag football, thus the level of my question.

I remember during a show with Leahey and Leahey, they had Rich Miano and he straight out stated that Woolsey is more suited to running a read option offense since he’s not a pocket passing type of quarterback. From all that I have seen, I would definitely have to agree with Miano’s assessment since his completion percentage is horrible. Michael Carter was not a great passer, but he could run the heck out of the ball (Woolsey’s a pretty good runner as well), so if Chow is still here and Woolsey is still the starting quarterback, they should consider running some read option plays. If Chow is still here next year, I hope one of the quarterbacks that sat out this year shows up ready to play or else it’s going to be another long season.

  66. Buffoman December 2, 2014 1:28 pm

Since folks are tossing names about for possible administrators, what about Mufi Hanneman as AD? He was an athlete, Fulbright Scholar, Mayor so he has the smarts, business acumen and understands athletes. I don’t believe he will run for office again. I also don’t believe he’d hesitate making changes. He’d probably upset a few folks along the way. Even if he was a possible fit, I don’t believe that he’d be considered.

Change is needed… what I’ve been saying all along is that UH can’t fire him because of financial and PR issues, which are both self inflicted wounds. Odds are that, Chow will be back… So instead of being a dead horse, which is easy to do, I’d rather look and point out things Chow can realistically do to improve the team.

If UH didn’t have financial problems, if in a more prominent conference or if they were a private school, Chow would have been fired after going 1-11 last year.

Judging by the sequence of events that happened prior to Gib Arnold’s firing, I get the impression that Ben Jay is a puppet to Lassner, Bley-Vroman, and the BOR mainly in attempt to keep his job. I think he quickly figured out how UH leadership works behind the scenes and is basically doing what he has to do not get fired.

Remember, Jay worked with Arnold on his extention, agreed to terms, drew up papers, signed Arnold’s new contract and sent it up for the Chancellor to finalize. It was at that time Chancellor Apple was coincidentally removed and the contract was never executed…then the chain of events happened and Gib was fired.

By the way, still no sign of the NCAA report or any allegations made.

  77. Former UH Athlete December 2, 2014 1:57 pm

  78. Andrew December 2, 2014 2:02 pm

In my opinion I think the firing of Gib Arnold will be proven warranted once the NCAA releases its statement, findings, and punishments. The public’s opinion of him will probably change very quickly as well. I don’t think the way they did it was very professional though. I wish the NCAA would hurry up and come out with it though because it would be a shame if the bball team has a really good season and has a real good chance to make post season and then all of a sudden the NCAA comes down with the hammer near the ending of the season and the team becomes ineligible (which I assume will be one of the punishments).

    Tsai’s comment says it all.

Scott Harding was named to the Mountain West Conferenceโ€™s first team as a punter.

No other Warrior was selected to the first or second team.

Honorable mention went to center Kody Afusia, left tackle Ben Clarke, kicker Tyler Hadden, right tackle Sean Shigematsu, safety Taz Stevenson and defensive end Beau Yap.

  81. Former UH Athlete December 2, 2014 2:11 pm

Beady Hoke is now available. Michigan just gave him the ax. I don’t think UH can afford him but he’d be a good choice. He build SDSU into a competitive program while he was there.

I for one, am not in favor of “local” or “UH” ties being a priority for hiring the next UH coach. You hire the best guy available within the budget.

  82. jimmy the lock December 2, 2014 2:23 pm

Oh, and BTW, congrats to Harding and the honorable mention honorees.

Must be good fun blogging about Chow. Any scoops on recruits? Predictions for next years lose/win record?

I’ll start on the record, same prediction as this past season, not more than 4 wins.

  83. Andrew December 2, 2014 2:23 pm

    79.

I agree that candidates with UH/local ties should not be the only ones considered for the job. I mean it would be great if the one chosen for the job did, but I’d rather them just choose someone that would be best for the job. That being said I don’t think someone needs to have UH or local ties in order to succeed here.

  84. A-House December 2, 2014 2:24 pm

    #76:

why punish the players by making the team ineligible when ‘other” people did the “mis-deed”, if any?

if a player, like some in the SEC, did violated a NCAA rule, then punish the player; not the school or team

it’s like the TSA, give certain people some authority and all hell breaks loose!!!!!!

which leads me to the next topic, which is unrelated to football, but an important part of our lives – perhaps the grand jury in Furgerson is correct, but I question the “training and philosophy” of police officer training – under what circumstance(s) is an officer to use “deadly or lethal” force against an unarmed person? is it the training/philosophy that should be looked at rather than the circumstances surrounding the shooting?

in the military, we are taught to “shoot to kill” or use of “deadly force”; not aim for a leg or arm to stop a person who does not obey your command(s) such as hands up or stop where you are/don’t move – if this is a circumstance to use “deadly force” somewhere, be it the individual officer or his/her police academy training or both that should be reviewed.

this principle also applies to a coach or player wherein the team loses many games.

  85. Andrew December 2, 2014 2:29 pm

    82.

Oh I agree it sucks that the entire team suffers and not just the individuals that were responsible for the violations, but unfortunately that’s the way the NCAA runs things. I still think though very big sanctions are on their way and the sympathy that the public has for Gib is going to do a total 180

  86. hatakeman December 2, 2014 2:38 pm

In spite of his late season heroics, Ikaika continues to have difficulty deciding when and to whom he should throw to. Thus he finds himself having to scramble to avoid sacks. And some of his sacks were because the RB failed to make a block or failed to pick up a block. The O-line gave Ikaika more than enough time to throw to a receiver or simply to throw it away. Won’t know about Wittek until he plays (for UH) under the lights. Maybe Beau Reilly will emerge as the starter. Should be interesting.

  87. SteveM December 2, 2014 2:38 pm

    RE: #67 & #68
I believe that if Lassner were president and Virginia Hinshaw chancellor, Jim Donovan would still be the AD. Ben Jay’s mis-steps have been malahini ones that blew up …and while is he is learning the landscape, he might be a little gunshy of everything now.

I have faith in the current administration. and while I may or may not agree with everything, I know they will do the pono thing. I have no clue about the “mafias”.

  88. Andrew December 2, 2014 2:53 pm

I miss Hinshaw as Chancellor. She definitely had a passion and interest for the athletic department. I had hope that once Greenwood was gone, she might have been considered for the position again. The new Chancellor worries me. Coming from the language arts dept, I question whether he even has any interest in helping to improve the athletic department at all.

It’s more like an all or none type of situation for UH. Even in bad years like now, football still makes money and supports other sports. They just don’t make enough money to support all of them. If they eliminate football, they would be in even more debt than they have now.

#90 I agree and thus our not understanding the current financial plight of the entire system and only looking at football puts the athletic program on a slippery slope. A successful boycott of next year’s football program because we were not entertained enough may be the trigger that turns off the lights completely.

The entire system is in the red, not just athletics. If we choose to vent our frustration through non support we could be cutting off our nose to spite our face.

We need to support our team, as difficult as it is, this is the only game in town (aside from high school and pop Warner). I am a fan and I will always support UH football, even when it’s bad as I don’t like the alternative of having nothing.

I’m afraid the landscape is changing in college sports. UAB is the first in what will be more universities that can not compete with the TV teams.

June Jones’ idea to leave the Fall to the big moneyed teams and move the mid-majors to the Spring has merit. It may be the only way to save sport.

It’s bad enough he quit on the team but if he says that he quit because of personal reasons and then all of a sudden goes and applies for another job right after, it doesn’t look very good. I mean he did take a few months off but for personal reasons you’d think he’d wait a longer period of time before going for another job. 105. Derek December 2, 2014 5:09 pm

Coach Chow has been around the block. The problem is that younger head coaches and offensive coordinators are more innovative and take more risks with their play calling. Chow is from the old school and 40 plus years has past him by. He believes that the more things change, keep doing the things that worked before. I think Chow’s player evaluations in recruiting is very questionable. I really think it’s time to cut ties now because we will suffer the same things next year too, about 3-10 or 4-9. As it is, attendance is dwindling and fans (the majority) are disgusted after 3 years.

For myself, I consider myself a very loyal UH fan. My wife and I have had seasons tickets since Don King was the Head Coach. We maintained these seasons tickets until the end of Bob Wagner’s tenure. At that time, my friends and I decided that tailgateing early was getting old and so were we. Still, I watched every UH game on TV that were televised. I was happy when Pay Per View came along and with High Definition, it is wonderful. I don’t mind paying for PPV because I feel I am supporting the team that way. Besides I also watch a lot of college football too so it’s the best of all worlds. I went to UH, graduated on the mainland, my wife and kids are all UH graduates so we love our University.

It was once in a lifetime when the 2007 team went 12-0. I still think the 2006 team was a better team. We enjoyed it so much I even went to a couple of games to see for my self including UH beat UW 35-28 after being down 0-21 in the first quarter. That was the most exciting game that I ever saw in my life. Then we started to go at least one road game a season with a side trip to Vegas of course by the tour escort. Lately, UH football has been a joke. I mean, we’re watching PPV and we’re laughing and in shock at the same time with the boneheaded plays,
stupid penalties, and conservative play calling. Football is entertainment. At least June Jones’ offense moved the ball through the air and scored a lot of points. It was at least exciting. Now, it’s boring. Time for UH powers to move in a different direction and get a new Head Coach and maybe even a new Athletic Director. I will not renew my UH basketball tickets next season and I certainly won’t get football season tickets either. But, I will order PPV because I like to watch football in HD.

  106. oneseason December 2, 2014 5:18 pm

Interesting outreach today from UH Athletics. If I understood the call correctly, Ben Jay wants to make sure all Rainbow Wahine Volleyball season ticket holders who are also Rainbow Warrior season ticket holders get their 10% refund on Rainbow Wahine Volleyball tickets. Outreach is good. I hope it continues, and evolves to encourage more two way interactions.

Congrats to the Warriors for a season of so many awesome and pretty fantastic triumphs. Soooooo many great things happened this season. Put them all together for the entire games and sheesh, we woulda won all of the games! Cheehu!!!

Much improved from the season prior. I am proud of the strides toward the improvements you all had made; for the Seniors and leadership for stepping up to the task at hand; for everyone – the entire team – for never giving up even tho thoughts might have been there for brief moments (yeah, short spurts of deviations would be allowed when one is frustrated so long as one gets back up and tries again). You stuck it out, never gave up even thru to the last second, and gave the competition something to worry about hehe

Uh…Plus you all can run faster and etc than I ever could ๐Ÿ˜‰ teehee

Increase PPV and decrease ticket prices. We need to keep the ticket and PPV cost down to what it would cost for a family of four to take in a movie. $40-50. That will get the younger set who are still able to drive and tailgate to the games and the older folks can watch it on HDTV. We can TV Gate and Tail Gate. I wouldn’t mind paying more if it will help the cause.

    Buffoman — well said.

Also, as I pointed out yesterday, those “voicing” their displeasure by not renewing their football season tickets won’t be “heard” until the deadline passes and the new season ticket holders are seated… this is usually early in July. By then, the season is already underway with coaches in place… and probably someone has taken or been moved by request to the choice season ticket location given up by the non-renewer.

Coach Chow has the players. The coaching has to step up. Wynn and Matthews are too young. Chow can save his job by getting experienced college coaches for the receivers and quarterbacks. Norm can call the plays if the QB’s make good choices and the WR’s learn to catch.

Once I commented how “boring” the offense was under Dick Tomey, and Pride. nicely reminded me that watching Gary Allen carry the ball was anything but boring.
    1) He is correct, a good running game can be exciting. Look at some of the gains that Joey, Steven, Diocemy, and Pareese made this season, those were exciting carries.
    2) Even if he is wrong and even though this is a blog, I would not disagree with Pride. ๐Ÿ˜‰

political dollars come mostly from unions n pac’s…they knew he had no chance as an independent….

He seems to put his foot in his mouth all to often..n very very poor timing…

Morality…who as an AD would ever allow his charges under him to sleep in the locker room n not get their rent monies…also documented in here how they used all ‘freebies’ for other sports n not even allow the softball wahines a banquet…
and sumone is micro managing things up there…if not him then who.. cuz one of the founders of koa anuenue. quit in disgust.. n so did kobayashi…seems like to me he is chasing more people away then bringing them together…

And the charges against the 3 or 4 from the football team for bullying.. are they true..why does he not address those allegations..are they true or lies??? do you know.. do you think those should get a free ride ?

But you may be partially right… he maybe be very competent in counting beans… but his job requires more….as an aside…do you approve of him pencil in

The Big 5 conferences plus ND total 65 teams. With a roster size of 105 players per team, that is only 6,825 playing football. For the sport to continue beyond high school level, all energy should be focused on creative ideas to sustain/ expand the “football competition experience” beyond those 6,825 at the Big 5 collegiate level. UAB is not likely to be the last one to drop football, IMHO.
I agree with ST’s comment about just being grateful to have collegiate football games to attend in Hawaii. I have enjoyed the run since joining the WAC (also before when the UH helmets were gold color)…Energy spent on coaching changes is wasted energy..just my 2 cents.

In a way, the status quo is probably a comfortable place to be for UH leadership. You get exciting games against the โ€œeasy teamsโ€, and donโ€™t have to make the financial and intellectual commitments necessary to compete with the rest. The status quo also avoids risking more money while still having the risk of continued failure. Of course with each passing year of inaction, the UH leadership increasingly eclipses the records and notoriety of von Appen and Frazier. Letโ€™s go Bows!

  130. Former UH Athlete December 3, 2014 6:16 am

The rumor mill for CSU coach McElwain to Florida is heating up. Apparently the only thing holding it up is McElwain’s buyout number from his hand new extension. Sounds like Florida is trying to negotiate that number down a little.

CSU’s handling of McElwain’s contact situation is the textbook way to minimize risk for the University when they can’t afford a big money contact and they realize that their coach might catch the attention of bigger schools. I’m sure this is happening way sooner than CSU hoped for but they smartly reworked McElwain’s contract knowing he has SEC ties and multiple high profile jobs have become available (Florida, Nebraska, and Michigan).

The bad news for CSU is obviously they lose the architect that has built the program into a contender, but that sting is lessened by a cool $7.5 million buyout (or whatever that number ends up being but likely will be significant). Then it’s up to CSU leadership to decide if they want to reinvest this buyout money on a good coach if one is interested, spend $ on upgrading facilities, or both… Or maybe decide to put on a Stevie Wonder concert series if they so wish.

In any case, CSU has handled McElwain perfectly. It appears they may make $7.5 million from the buyout clause and they haven’t likely had to spend additional $1 since the new pay salary probably doesn’t start until January.

It’s a good news, good news situation for CSU now.

Hmm, CSU contract with McElwain perhaps isn’t as good for the school as first thought. That’s what happens when you have a school president involved in contract negotiations.

“Mac’s attorney asked Tony if he would agree to waive the breakup fee if the ‘dream job’ were to come along โ€” his attorney wasn’t getting the answer he wanted from me.”

“Unfortunately, during the signing meeting, Tony said yes. I was terribly disappointed in Tony’s decision to agree to that request. It left the door open for people to go after Mac.”

“Protecting CSU from schools like Florida going after Mac is exactly why we put the breakup fee into his employment agreement. After the 2013 season ended, I foresaw a year like our 2014 season coming, and I wanted to lock up Mac before this year’s season began to protect us from this sort of thing.”

If no one thinks that there could be a chance of UH football going away you should pay close attention to what’s happening at UAB right now…Sad to think we played and lost to them in the Hawaii bowl and that they had a petty good receiver by the name of Roddy White on that team…this is why we need to support our program through the ups and downs

  135. Tempmanoa December 3, 2014 8:18 am

We will end up like UAB if we try to compete with the P5 schools in providing stipends, meals and all day snack bars, health insurance extended beyond college, lifetime college scholarships, luxury facilities, and all the things the P5 schools are beginning to provide now that they are free of the NCAA. These things along with the cost of chartered flights, and million dollar coaches salaries, increase the subsidy that the schools need to pay for almost every football program. The question becomes why not just do away with football if we cannot compete, then subsidize the athletic department instead and shrink that if necessary. For schools like UAB, the tipping point is often when things like a new stadium are required they just cannot get the TV revenue or ticket revenue to avoid paying for it from the school budget.

Graham, any of the fellows you mentioned, would be have to be willing to take a 250-350k paycut to come UH. Factor the tenuous nature of the UHAD finances and leaving programs that are consistently in the top 20 programs in the nation, and the attendant accoutrements (e.g. bowl games, national televised prime-time coverage, great facilities and and recruits)–I am remain pragmatically dubious if we could pull this off….
