With the Warriors ending their season on the road this weekend, tomorrow’s final Manoa practice is essentially the season-ender for the more than 35 scout players.
The redshirts and developing players who form the scout teams attend the same number of meetings and run the same number of gassers as the depth-chart players, but they don’t get the payoff of playing on Saturdays. Sometimes there are cross-overs. Quarterback Beau Reilly, running back Pereese Joas, offensive lineman RJ Hollis, to name a few, moved from the scout team to the other side. But mostly they contribute in simulating the upcoming opponent’s schemes in practices. The winning touchdown the other night doesn’t happen without scout defenses running line stunts and press coverages all week in practice.
There won’t be any lei or family and friends or a game-winning TD tomorrow. But the Unknown Warriors should be applauded for their contributions this season.

IMHO I think that all members of the TEAM should be allowed to dress for each home game but at least for the last home game. How can you call this a TEAM when they are not allowed to be seen by most of the fans as part of the team. I am not a student of the NO CLUE AT ALL so is there some kind of rule that limit’s the number of players who can dress for a home game???

Yes, thanks and respect to the scout players. Hopefully for some of them there will be a promotion to the depth chart coming next next year. And let’s hope we end the season with a win. It will be tough to win at Fresno. But hey, for us it is tough to win anywhere, especially on the road.
Once the last game is over the “what to do with Norm” show will start. It is easy to say fire him and in most programs this would have already happened. But I don’t think it will as we don’t have the money to do it (unless there are well healed and influential boosters out there ready and willing to ante up the cash).
I doubt that there are many supporters left for coach Chow. Even those that like his style would be hard pressed to justify retaining him based upon his record. But my guess is that he will be back. If so I hope he makes the appropriate adjustments to his coaching staff and that we retain the coaches who are performing well. I did hear a rumbling that one of our key assistant coaches will be on the move.
So there won’t be anymore Warrior football games to watch for awhile but there will be entertainment nonetheless. Even if the entertainment is generated by frustrated and furious fans on the blogs.

NCAA playing rules limit the bench area to 60 non-uniformed personnel (NCAA Football Rule 1-2-4(b) limits the number of non uniformed personnel in the team area to 60 for both teams)
I looked it up according to the NCAA and MWC rules you can dress 105 players for any home game and are limited to 64 players on the travel squad. So the reason that we don’t dress all the team is a coaching decision, one that I don’t agree with.
#10 Kanak – You are correct about the number of non-uniformed personnel. But my opinion is that we should DRESS the whole team….They(scout team) are part of the team are they not????
#9 A-house – think about it, it also is good PR with the parents and family of the kids. I know if I had a kid on the team and he was dressed for the game I would want to see him on the sideline even if he never sniffed the field. If say I was on the mainland watching the game I know I would be zooming in on the sideline to spot my child.
To me it’s first a moral booster for the kids and second it’s good PR for the school. The only problem I see is that it would create a little more work for the coaches to keep order on the sidelines, but like most things it could be done and it should be that is IMHO>>>>

Re-Luke Matthews
I’m liking the WR coach. Some say send him down stream. But I say keep him. I’ve watched him, and he seems to be coaching up his players, diagraming plays and motivating his group on the sidelines during games. On the spectacular last play of the UNLV game I saw Luke Matthews huddled around his WR’s, clipboard in hand, diagraming a play. I even thought it was Matthews that got Chow’s attention to call that final timeout with one second remaining in the game.
On the season his unit has received criticism for many drop passes, running incorrect routes and not blocking downfield. Now it seems like the WR’s, slots, are showing improvement.
Half the battle in coaching is teaching, motivating and having a good rapport and respect between coach and players with the optimal result being that of extracting the best out of his players. I see this in Matthews and I would certainly take stock in Matthews coaching future.

The “Unknown Warriors”, as ST put it, are the backbone of the team and play a vital role in any team’s game planning and preparation. As Rudy said when asked by a first string player why he goes so hard during practice since he was only on the scout team and that he should tone it down, “If I don’t go hard and do my job on every play, you guys can’t do yours during the game.”
When you alienate people…be it in work place …or field…or court etc…it does not leave a ‘good taste’ in ones mouth…
This coach has sum very strange methods in his concept of ‘team unity’ n playing as one team….and it shows a…it seems at times they have no unity…coaches n players….he seems to have disenfranchised his coaches n players….
One of the first rules in negotiation skills that one learns is…to do it at home or in your office…or your home field…playing a football game is part of that…you are negotiating the ‘outcome’ of the game…on the field…
Therefore it stands to reason…you try to get an ‘edge’ in that outcome by using as much of what is available to you …to ur advantage…suiting up 105 players …50,000 rabid cheering fans….etc….using every legal opportunity at your disposal

The ‘greatest’ Mr. Ali….was a master at it…as were sum legendary coaches…n the library is replete with volumes n volumes on how these coaches used it to their teams advantage…
It is demoralizing to…parents…relatives…. n team members to be treated like second class members of the team…when in fact….they should be on the bench…cheering n encouraging their team mates on to victory…n high fives when they come of the field after an interception…fumble recovery…n pass reception for a TD…or running for a TD…or ne play for a long gain…etc…
Why am I wrong to think..that if we had an opportunity to play a game at home…or on the road for a million bucks…the AD n coach would both choose the away game…health and welfare of the players in our system is not priority one…it is just another option….my 2 pisos for the day…
You know what’s a scary thought? Ben Jay extending Chow Von Appens contract next year. That right there would be the demise of UH football.

21…Jay won’t extend Chow until after 2015 season at the earliest because he’s on contract through 2016. There’s no need to do an extension until then.
2015 will absolutely be the make or break year for Chow. Following the 2015 season, Chow will likely be fired or offered an extension. In modern FB & BB, schools don’t want to have coaches on the final year of contracts because the uncertainty of their future disrupts recruiting and is a point of negative recruiting by rivals.
The only surprise would be if UH fires Chow after this year, which seems unlikely when considering the costs involved, and the hugely negative public perception the UH leadership has right now with how they’ve handled prominent firings/forced retirements without good faith.
#20, I believe that given the financial situation that UH athletics is in, any AD would accept a million dollar payday on the road as opposed to a poor payday at home.
They (ADs) may not like it, but there are the realities of the need for dollars, especially in a deficit state of affairs. On another note, if you ask players if they rather play a “directional team” at home or say, LSU at Death Valley, I bet the players would choose going on the road.

As one season is ending, another season is upon us. Recruiting season is really a year round endeavor. The way I look at it, we are in dire need of defensive lineman for next year, at least 4 or 5. We need a couple of linebackers, a couple of pass rushers, about 3 or 4 for the secondary. We need to recruit at least 2 QBs, besides Zwahlen returning. We always need offensive linemen, at least 2 or 3 running backs, a deep threat at WR, a kicker, and a punter. That’s a lot of needs.
I like that Campbell defensive lineman, OL Uluave from Punahou, WR Noa as a good possession receiver. Offensively, the best player by far is McKenzie Milton, but he’s only a Junior. His decision-making and playmaking ability is the stuff of a winner. Chow should already be making an offer to him now. Forget his size. This guy can play the QB position. Taulapapa, also a Junior, is a load. He’s a man among boys and just bulls over people. He could be the next Iosefa. That Punahou kicker is pretty good too.
#26 That QB from St. Louis, also an underclassman is, in my opinion the best of the current QBs in the high school ranks. McKenzie is also a terrific field general, no doubt but I feel that the young man from St. Louis has a greater upside. I don’t believe we will get either as the lure of the Big School will have them as with most of the top tier players leaving the State.
If they intend on keeping Chow next year, and it looks like they will, I think they should just announce it already. Having the question still in the air gives other teams the ammo for recruiting against us. I mean the team’s record of course isn’t great by any means but there are still recruits that come here to play under coach Chow or even some of the assistants that recruit them.

Looking over FS record and schedule…not impressive. They beat a beat up Wolfpack and 4 turnovers made the difference. If the Warriors come to play they will be in it to the end. Comes down to who wants it. Go Warriors
If they can pull off the win at Fresno State it would extra sweet since not only is it a rivalry game, it is also their senior night and they need one more win to become bowl eligible.
pollyp. Were you at the game or did you see that happening on TV. You must have terrific eyesight to see him actually diagramming a play.
The jury is still out on Matthews. Young coaches got to make their bones on the practice field in their area of responsibility and on the recruiting trail. The receivers were the most inconsistent group all year. It may have been a lack of talent and experience mixed with a inexperienced coach. My biggest knock on him is not getting Ewaiko up to speed quick enough. The explanation given for Ewaliko not being used more was he was having difficulty learning the schemes and the routes. Was it all on Ewaliko? Would a more experienced coach have done a better job?
Hire Ashley Lelie or any ex June Jones era receiver for receiving coach next year.

You cannot evaluate anything in football without looking at how you compare to others. Because football is competition and being “good” is meaningful only to the extent you are better than your opponents. Luke Matthers is lacking in experience, he is still learning and will need to learn for another few years before he can compete with the more experienced receiver coaches in the league. If you watch the games, you will see that our receiver corps is not up to the other teams we compete with and this is due in part ti better receiver coaches with more experience.
Whaaat! Ewaliko cant grasp the schemes and stuff? Isnt he in college? I dont think Hawaii should accept an invitation to a bowl game. I mean 6-8 doesnt cut it in my book if they win a conf. playoff game. They might just embarass themselves on TV again. 9-5 or 8-6 then yeah, go for it. Otherwise Shame.

You must not have played football if you think that in half a season it is possible to get a guy just because he is fast to be a WR. It takes years to be on this level. Remember he is fast…but just fast on our team. A lot of these teams have faster players. He doesnt run good cut routes yet. He will get there but maybe not till next year.

Def will be a tough sell to keep these local QB prospects home with the lure of the big boys. But think UH needs to try as Tagovailoa and McKenzie are legit. Does the Norm “QB Guru” Chow pitch still work??? GO BOWS!!!

Especially if Ewaliko improves over the offseason and we get Stubblefield and Haynes back next year, we should have an improved receiving core hopefully with more speed. The battle at QB will be one to watch with Wittek and Zwahlen coming on board. I remember seeing somewhere that Zwahlen is a very mobile QB as well.

It was on one of the radio show interviews that the Mililani coach said that McKenzie made it clear that he wanted to play at UH. So pretty much it depends if they make him an offer or not. I know a lot of schools are passing on him because of his size, but I would like to see UH give him a chance and see what he can do on the next level.

Looking forward to having the whole squad of receivers and Oline guys healthy next year. Along with more competition with healthy QB’s we looking good for 2015. Hoping we get a bunch of good freshies to compete for playing time. RB’s looking good with speed and horse power to “plow” the middle.

#40,, size is good but there is a number of QB’s in the pros that do not fit the proto type NFL QB measurements.
It comes down to .. can they make plays.
Milton is a good athlete. He will be an asset to UH.

Having watched Mililani play against Punahou, I came away with the “ah, what the heck thought regarding public school ‘recruiting'”. Maybe the rule is, once you decide to get a GE from your existing school to go to another to play ball, blow and instrument, or whatever, you have to stay. No jumping around.
The public schools are really in a tough place if they have to use only students from their respective communities when the private schools can recruit/”scholarship” from throughout the State. That may put additional pressure on the receiving public high school to beef up their academics to assure these students the best opportunities to get scholarships when they move to the next level.
That should shake up the OIA alignment even further, but in the end, it could make all of the schools more competitive on the same level and thus may even prevent blowouts and possible injuries.
How good is McKenzie? Ask Punahou.
Seems to me like Ewaliko was really productive as a receiver. I wanted him to get more looks. We needed a deep threat to stretch our opponents defense. He was pretty much it. He made plays. I will take that any day over someone who runs pretty routes. One day he will learn to do that but as long as he keeps making plays I would play him. I see many freshmen playing on other teams. Seems like their coaches find ways to make them successful.
I do hope UH coaches are not “waiting” for another QB to commit – it could bit them you know were like it did the Punahou QB who went away on a VB scholarship.
Make the offer now and see the reaction of the athlete!!! as some posted, the higher profile QB from a higher profile school will probably go to the mainland.

He’s on Oahu now, resting from his stroke. He’ll rest up and spend Thanksgiving there before going “home” to Las Vegas.

#37. jeff. I disagree. The coaches had spring and fall to work with him. They could’ve used him more on specific plays designed to take advantage of his speed. At minimum they could’ve used him more as a decoy on fly routes to occupy a corner and safety to open something underneath.
I’ve been to all the home games and caught all the road games on TV except one. I don’t see how you can make a judgement on his ability to run “cut routes.” He hasn’t been on the field that often. There’s always a buzz when he’s in, people will tell other’s “Ewaliko’s in.” There’s a perceptible feeling of anticipation he might be involved in something. But how often has that happened.
I take you played football, wide receiver maybe? Again explain to me, since I’ve never played HS or college ball, exactly what a cut route is. I can’t recall that term being used in all my years of watching, listening or reading about football. I’ve always had the impression most routes involve a certain degree of cutting.
The chances of us beating Fresno and SJSU and UNLV winning their games to get us into the MWC championship games are 1.6% or less than 2/100. This is based on the ESPN computer model which has been very accurate.
The Percentage Chance of Being the Division Champion is the product of the following probabilities which all need to go our way:
UNLV Beating Nevada: 19.1% Chance
SJSU Beating DSU 28.0% Chance
UH Beating Fresno 30.4% (call it a 1 in 3 chance we beat Fresno).
Our chances of winning the division: 1.6%
I see Milton being a potential star at the FCS or D2 level if he continues to work hard and gets to play in an offense that fits his skills. I see him being like Vernon Adams from Eastern Washington. Adams has a much stronger arm, but Milton appears to have better foot speed.
Milton is most definitely a gamer and he has good speed, but he lacks the pure arm strength to drive the ball. The ball floats and lacks velocity when he doesn’t have a clear space to step into. Even when he steps into a throw, it doesn’t have much zip on it. I would rate his arm strength as similar to Higgins or Schroeder at best.

I will take coach York’s assessment of Milton above anyone elses. I think he knows him the best. I think Milton will be good for UH. I don’t know if he will end up the starter but I know he will add to the competition. I remember a quarterback named Mo who snuck in and surprised me. I remember seeing him at the spring scrimmage at the stadium and wondered why he wasn’t startng?
Pomai…while I, too agree with you on having everyone suit up, I believe with our current budget restraints we are unable to finance another 30+ uniformed players. From head to toe each outfit sans pads must run $1,500 +/-. That’s a lot of coin for a program strapped for cash.

There’s this guy at Kansas who led them to an 11-0 record in 2007-2008. He was only 5’11” 200 lbs. His name is Todd Reesing. Milton is 5’11, 155 lbs. now. By the time he’s a sophomore in college he could be 6’1″ and about 190 with the weights. His arm should be stronger and he should be faster.

Unless we are Mackenzie’s doctor, we cannot speculate on whether he will continue growing or not. Some kids are done growing by the 10th grade, 11th grade, etc. Some kids are late bloomers and have a growth spurt late. Mackenzie could be done growing for all we know. I do know that we should offer him a scholie, not only because he has 4.5 speed, or is an accurate thrower, but because we are the only state school, and the local kids, especially the top tier locals must know that we value them and want the best local kids to stay home. So keep a scholarship open for him, especially since he wants to stay home. The sophomore QB from Kalaepohaku will be courted by the best programs, and while we should (and already have) offered him a scholarship, the reality is that he is the second coming of Marcus Mariotta, and cannot turn down the opportunity to play for a school that is really “chasing championships.”

al . . . I think the Mililani QB has better character traits than Manziel. But I have thought the same about his playing ability.
Saint Louis QB will beast out next year and draw multiple offers. People will tout him (if they aren’t already) as the next Mariota. Hawaii won’t stand a chance at keeping him. They should still try hard though.

Re: Ewaliko, Chow said it himself– he said Ewaliko was not playing more because he could not figure out where to play him. Chow said the same thing last year about St. Juste– he was trying to find a way to use him more but hadn’t found it yet. It is his old school style– you run your system and if a guy does not fit, you don’t go out of your way to find a place for him even if he is talented. Ewaliko, St. Juste, Donnie King, and others have mostly sat instead of being trained to play in a position that they can learn and get on the field to give our offense speed and efficiency and bring our offense up from next to last in the Mountain West in scoring and total offense.

Mack, like most coaches, stopped suiting up redshirts because, let’s face it, there’s no purpose for them being on the sideline except cosmetically. The bottom line is the sideline is a work area.
What’s probably a bigger concern is all the regular people on the sidelines (but not within the team area). I’m convinced most of those people want to be on the field to be seen, not to actually watch a game. We go on the field for the final couple minutes and the view is horrible. We have to take notes off the scoreboard. It’s hard to see coverages on the field.

1.6 percent is better than the zero percent everybody believed after SDSU won last week. Who knew the tie-breaker formula would be that difficult to comprehend.
All I know is I’d rather watch football in late November than the alternative of no-football days for eight months.
