Departing again
The Warriors depart this afternoon on their fifth road trip of the season.
Once again, the Warriors will be short-handed. Head coach Norm Chow announced on his radio show that running back Steven Lakalaka and defensive lineman Marcus Malepeai are not expected to travel while recovering from injuries. Linebacker Julian Gener is expected to make the trip.
San Jose’s big even this weekend is “Oprah’s The Life You Want Weekend” tomorrow and Saturday at the SAP Center.

Another Saturday and a possible win against a team with a record not much sportier than ours. I no longer expect wins but at least this one feels possible.
Based upon what ST has shared and the financial situation at UH I am resigned to (or at least prepared for) the news that coach Chow will be retained another year. In most other programs he would already have been relieved of his position. But we are not most other programs.
If coach Chow is retained my agony could be reduced by the redesign of the offensive coaching staff. The hiring of a good OC (not another young or old coach who clearly will defer to coach Chow’s offensive vision but someone with mind of their own and the capacity to lead rather than follow). With the offensive players we have coming and coming back from injury we will have many more weapons. We need an offensive coaching staff able to mold them and ignite their abilities. On defense I think we might be OK. We need d-linemen and probably a JC guy or two in that area. I still think coach Clune has the ability. His defense is very linebacker dependent. With our two best linebackers out (JG coming back this week) we have been weaker.
So if we could create on off season buzz with the hiring of a young dynamic OC I would be placated enough to be interested. Budget wise hiring an OC would be much more economical than firing coach Chow and having to pay another HC. And with the right hire it is possible the fan base would at least be willing to hang in another year and some of those who bailed might be willing to have another look.
Warriors play at San Jose. I expect another offense or offensive loss.

Some may remember that after Macmackin our first DC left, JJ played a big role running the defense. He then told us that he was looking to hire a defensive coordinator that was not a yes man, but who could be on equal standing with him. He asked Tomey, but he had committed to coach with Mack Brown at Texas. He then got Glanville an ex NFL head coach like JJ to be our coordinator despite a little history of disagreement between the two of them. And Glanville made points to JJ about both the offense and defense and that made a big positive impact.

The 15th annual Road Rainbow Warrior football tailgate, a San Francisco Bay Area tradition, is scheduled for Saturday, November 15, near the San Jose State University Spartan Stadium. In the past, up to 1,500 have attended the Road Rainbow Warrior Tailgate that features live Hawaiian music, ono local Hawaiian style food, and fabulous raffle prizes.
The tailgate will feature several well known San Francisco Bay area music artists plus Alex Kawakami of Hawaii’s Manoa DNA group. The University of Hawaii band will also make a special appearance with Head Football Coach Norm Chow. Larry Beil, former Hawaii television and ESPN sportscaster, and now Bay Area ABC sportscaster, will emcee the event.
The event is supported by major sponsors including GEICO, Outrigger Hotels and Resorts, Hukilau Restaurants, Alaska Airlines, University of Hawaii Alumni Association, University of Hawaii Foundation, Na Koa Football Club, Hawaii Chamber of Commerce of Northern California (HCCNC) and HZONE.
The event is from 10 am to 12:30 pm with a major raffle drawing for two Alaska Airlines tickets to Hawaii, a Waikiki weekend stay donated by Outrigger and a Samsung Smart Watch. Many other prizes will be given away.
According to Daryl Higashi, HCCNC President, “the concept of a Hawaii tailgate at an away football game started in 1999 when HCCNC, a group of expats who were also die hard football fans, teamed with the University of Hawaii in sponsoring a November tailgate attended by 1,000 at San Jose State Stadium.
A Friday night (November 14) Hawaii football weekend kickoff party will be held at Hukilau San Jose from 6 to 8:30 pm. All information on the tailgate, buying football tickets

before we left Hawaii, Midnight and Barbara were at the tailgate and I was under the impression that they would be back in Texas for this game – to our surprise, as we were walking between the Cal and Main Street Station, we hear a voice yelling “Mr. A-House, Mr. A-House” – turned around and we see Midnight running in our direction – great to see them again before they left Vegas that evening for Texas.
ST I was wondering when you will be coming out with an article on the men’s volleyball recruiting class. Bobby Curran had Charlie Wade on this morning and he had no idea yesterday was the early signing day for several sports including volleyball. Spent a lot of his time with Charlie asking about short guys who could touch 11 feet. Really? Then as Curran says that’s all the time they had left Charlie interjects and says he would be remiss if he didn’t talk about the signings he received yesterday. Said it was one of the most successful recruiting classes ever for men’s volleyball. And that’s all the time he had. Curran is clueless on anything regarding recruiting. But Charlie did mention they received six signed letters.

The last time I saw UH play San Jose State was in 2011 when we screwed up on countless special teams mistakes. We seemed to never have come back from that loss.

I thought the moments where I really saw the program going downhill was the 2011 loss @UNLV where we were big favorites in that game and got smoked, and then the Utah State game @home that year where we were up by a few touchdowns and lost to that freshmen backup QB they had. Coincidentally, that was the moment that Utah State’s program started to really gain momentum.
We “get chance” against SJSU, so let’s hope for the best…

The pah-tay and tailgate moves to San Jose this weekend…always one of the largest Tsai-ko gatherings since New Orleans. I hear tom-warriornation is so involved in the stadium tailgate he has been drafted to work there. Stop by and say hi. 🙂
jm yeah saw those but now Charlie can talk about these guys and not sure if st mentioned all six guys. Well maybe UH comes out with a press release soon. Men’s volleyball is the one sport that gives UH the best chance at a National Championship. Wahine are competitive every year but even Shoji will you the landscape of Wahine recruiting has changed since the advent of the BCS. Since the BCS and now the Power 5 conferences only two mid-major teams have made the final four. UH and Long Beach State. With men’s volleyball we are in a power conference. Be competitive in the MPSF and a National Championship is well within reach.

#6. AF. That’s always been one of my biggest complaints about Chow, the coaches he’s selected to help him run the offense. There’s no opening for an OC unless he promotes someone or lets someone go. I complained when he brought in a RB coach instead of an OC.
I have my doubts about the two rookies who handle the WRs and QBs. I have to question their ability to develop the players under their tutelage. Are their students getting better technique wise and have increased this their football IQs? How good are they at evaluating the talent on hand. Do they have a say on who plays and who doesn’t.
The offensive staff’s collective efforts in game planning, play calling and in game adjustments have been disappointing. It’s Chow’s fault not the assistants. He’s the one the deemed them ready to coach. While they may have shown a high aptitude for breaking down film it’s only a small part of being a coach. Can they teach, can they motivate and just a s important or more so , can they RECRUIT?
Can these young guys step into someone’s home and sell themselves to a prospective recruit and his parents? This year’s offensive recruits were pretty thin – 8 out of 24. I wonder how they’ll do next year.

#37 CB….couldn’t agree more. I feel for these two young men (WR and QB coaches). They are clearly Chow protege’s and he has given them their start in coaching. But he has also put them in a position to fail (because of their inexperience) and they have done so. Whether the career start coach Chow gave them will turn out to be a blessing or a curse remains to be seen. But there are not many places in the country where the performance of their units would not get them terminated. It will be interesting to see how it all unfolds. I feel like they were simply given jobs that they could not yet succeed at. They may get fired and probably should. But at the end of the day it was their boss’s error in judgement that caused the problem and he may well wind up keeping his job.

In Vegas this weekend, damn I wish they had a line on the game.
SJSU is an average or slightly below average team in the MWC, meaning we have a shot. It is not a Utah State, Colorado State, or Nevada, but more like a San Diego State. They have one of the best passing offenses in the MWC, and rank up there in national stats passing, and the challenge will be to stop them and keep up with their scoring output. They have a good pass offense, and an average rush defense– rush defense is close to ours. If we cannot stop their passing attack, then it will be a long night. Once again, it comes down to putting in the best defensive effort of the season, and being able to run and pass– especially off of play action.

#38.. I will never tell anyone not to support the team but I’m a realist. This team doesn’t have a chance because the HC will not have them or get them prepared for this game. Arrived in The Bay Area for the game…#28 I remember Kevin Lempa…saw him in San Diego (East County) a few years after he left…was @ a golf course checking in & was wearing one of my HH hats & golf shirts. ..he sees my, smiles, and says “aloha”…I looked up, recognized him, and said “hey Coach Lempa what are you doing hear”…we started to wala’au & I almost missed my tee time…Hey Norm, give Joas, Duke, & Beau a chance. ..have much worse can they do ???
