Game day: Colorado State

FORT COLLINS — Our columnist Dave Reardon and I made reservations to stay in the same hotel as the football team during this road trip.

Like so many plans this year, we had the right intent. The execution? Not so right. We’re in the same hotel as the Colorado State football team.

Oops.

At least this gives us a chance to see if wideout Rashard Higgins and quarterback Garrett Grayson are both healthy enough to play in tonight’s game. Yes, kickoff is at 5 p.m. MST, which is technically day, except the sun is scheduled to set before then.

Updates will be posted here and at https://twitter.com/stephentsai

  4. kev-1 November 8, 2014 8:03 am

You know your football team is doing bad when your own media members are hanging out with the other team more.

Maybe you could cause some kind of commotion at the hotel? You know, call in the starting offensive and defensive stars for an interview and lock them in the closet.

  5. kev-1 November 8, 2014 8:04 am

Are you ready to watch Iosefa up the middle for about 90% of offensive snaps?

  6. iwonderderwhytheyhateme November 8, 2014 8:13 am

So Chow is going to be back for a 4th year?

Well, lets look at the positives. If we lose today, at least it won’t be the most disappointing thing I’ve seen all day.

    🙂

    kev-1,

Only 90%? What makes you think we are going to open up the offense like that? 0_o

  10. gigi-hawaii November 8, 2014 8:29 am

ST, that is so funny. Now, who made the hotel reservations? You or Reardon?

  11. oneseason November 8, 2014 8:33 am

With Hawaii gaining 356 yards passing against Utah State versus 98 from rushing, maybe we will see wide open Hawaii offense play calling with the addition of more running power. Lets Go Bows!

  12. Z November 8, 2014 8:33 am

  15. 3-Prong November 8, 2014 9:00 am

We need to have Ikaika’s roll outs (runs and passes) as the primary offensive weapon. They are going to be so concerned about Joey that the inside will be clogged up. Roll outs will be available. Once that spreads them out a bit GASH EM WITH JOEY in the middle.

Pounding Joey 30 times is not the way to do it.

Let’s Go Bows. Shock the nation! Can, CAN!!!

  16. Z November 8, 2014 9:13 am

Teams know that Ikaika will roll out which is why he at times ends up with a defender in his face when he does it. They will use the delayed blitz and bring someone up the middle. It seems to always work. When they do our receivers are still in their patterns and not looking to receive the ball. I can remember one when a receiver got hit square in the back. Some people only look at the sack count but those hurries will hurt you too. And we have had a lot of those.

  17. kev-1 November 8, 2014 9:18 am

3-prong … Yes, that would be the logical approach. But, the inside being clogged up never stopped Chow from trying to run it up the middle before. As a matter of fact, I think that is when he thinks it is time to run.

    el sub:

from yesterday’s post – no “corner” — that’s my intent now – could it change? sure — like Chow is gone or individual players improve or I like new coach and staff – which players leave and come in

from this corner – there are many options

its like a car that I pass every week day coming home – car used to be plastered with the H logo – must have had at least 15 – 20 around the car – today, not a single H logo to be seen – conclusion: a very die hard fan who called it quits!

and, I’m sure there are many others – how in the hell is Ben Jay going to turn things around if he continues to keep Chow?

anyone here expect a “miracle” in 2015 if Chow stays? if you do, have a happy trip!

maybe for 2015 road trips, if we decide to go, get ticket only to see the stadium – never mind the game itself cause Ohio St and Wisconsin will bowl over UH – now, how can I arrange transportation back to the hotel after seeing the stadium?

  20. cocobean November 8, 2014 9:43 am

Is this the game Chow realizes you don’t have to have a TE or Hback on EVERY play.

Teams on every level from high school to the pros have shown you can run effectively out of 4 receiver sets. I don’t know why Chow has never really tried to spread the defense especially when he has a mobile QB. He doesn’t have to give up on the formations he’s been using I just wish he’d add this formation to make the offense less predictable.

  21. SteveM November 8, 2014 9:55 am

    Good game day everyone!

    RE: #5
Kev-1 — my first reaction to your comment was, “(90% — nah, offense is gonna open up this week and Iosefa up the middle only 70% of the time…”

OK, if Iosefa/Lakalaka/ St. Juste is succesful, I believe in the attitude that “I’m going to do it until they stop me!”. Problem is, it’s the 4th quarter and UH is down 2-3 touchdowns before we accept we have been stopped. I am more hopeful this week.

  22. HawaiiMongoose November 8, 2014 10:20 am

Meanwhile, as we sit here looking forward to another helping of Iosefa up the middle, I see that the Bowling Green Falcons under their new head coach Dino Babers improved to 6-3 and became bowl-eligible today with a 27-10 road win over Akron. The Falcons are in first place in the MAC East with a two-game lead and can clinch a berth in the MAC championship game by beating last-place Kent State next week. Bowling Green runs the Baylor offense and is 45th in scoring among FBS teams at 32.9 points per game. (UH is 113th at 9.9 points per game.) We need to find a way to bring Dino home.

  23. HawaiiMongoose November 8, 2014 10:21 am

That should be 19.9 points per game.

  24. azwarrior22 November 8, 2014 10:27 am

This whole saga with the Rainbow Warrior teams misfortunes over the past 3 seasons is like Ground Hog day. You keep waking up and it’s the same thing over and over gain, with same results…another loss. BJ needs to wake up and smell the coffee (just look at the gate receipts and the fan forums) and start effecting some personnel changes, starting with the HC. It’s hard to keep a disenchanted fan base to keep watching perennial losing. A someone needs to step up and stop this bleeding before it’s too late.

  25. Old School Dave November 8, 2014 10:36 am

Winning cures all. UH needs to bear down. Go Warriors!!

I would think that Dino Babers has his eyes set on a BCS program in need, such as Purdue. Natural progression up the coaching ladder.

  26. NorthShoreFan November 8, 2014 10:37 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

Na Wahine Softball looked good last night. New players and returning players. Good to see them in action.

If Chow is removed, whole staff is gone. Up to new HC to keep or not so don’t think anyone will be retained.
Like the ground hog found out, the sun comes up the next day even if he no poke his head outside.
    IMUA WARRIORS!

#24 … Charlie Brown to Chow’s Lucy teeing up the football?

  28. 808 November 8, 2014 10:40 am

Ben Jay may be the AD for UH athletics. But he is not in charge of UH football. The person’s in charge of UH football will make the change in 2017. Chow is safe for the duration of his contract.

But, would be great for the players to see success today with a win. 16 game road losing streak does not sound like today will be the day UH breaks that streak. But, you never know…

  29. Old School Dave November 8, 2014 10:41 am

Brian Johnson as OC would be a great choice, with the Utah connection. However, Johnson currently earns $225,000 as QB coach at Miss State.

Non-Football, but interesting to see Gov Elect’s Chief of Staff Mike McCartney taking a sizeable paycut from his job as HTA Chair ($247,000 to $140,000).

  30. Stephen Tsai November 8, 2014 10:42 am

    Hey, hey, hey, people.
    Back to me.
It’s interesting to see the CSU players are wearing suits and ties. They even wore that to the team breakfast. Then again, several are on my floor, and well, you can put young people in suits, but they’re still young people.
Then again, I’m at the age where I say things like: “Why does it have to be so loud?”

  31. Z November 8, 2014 10:42 am

The most impressive thing was going to see LeBron last night at the Pepsi Center.
(By the way, they give you grief if you order a “Diet Coke.” As the guy said: “What’s the name of this place?”
    But I digress.
The organization, from helpful parking attendants to the scores of people who work in promotions/marketing, really makes for a fun event. It also helps to have a mascot.

  33. Warrior Dave November 8, 2014 10:57 am

What’s the name of the place you and your ohana had breakfast in NYC that was close to the Marriott Marque? You said it was good? I’ll be there next week.

  34. Boolakanaka November 8, 2014 11:16 am

Aloha all! Hawai’iMongoose– Dino, I think, at this point, a reach, should UH have an opening in the near future. In short, Dino, with one more solid season, is on the fast track to the Big 10–and I have personally heard, he in on the radar of several ADs in the big10.

Positive thinking: In today’s game the Warriors shoot for the highest point in the blue sky.

I would like nothing more than to see the Warrior football team soar today. Reach new heights. Reach their untapped potential. Reach for the stars.

I want…unchartered territory for this Warrior team.

I just want to see the Warrior football team win…again.

A huge effort is needed for the Warriors to pull off an upset today. It might take David’s sling and a pouch of stones, a Trojan Horse, a lucky bounce, a Hail Mary pass competition, a new found head coaches thinking cap…in other words a dark horse transformation. That’s I want. I look forward to the game.

Norm Chow in year five of his contract with no extension will leave the cubbard even more bare setting the program back an additional three years. Pretty sure an eight year football drought is not what Rockne Freitas had in mind when the plan to unseat Coach Mack was devised.

Same hotel. Can they afford that hotel? Who will be picking up the tab? Norm Chow or the University Of Hawai’i? Fair question to ask considering Norm Chow and that? 1420 AM Radio ESPN with Bobby Curran will be on again live.

  44. Tiki808 November 8, 2014 12:03 pm

What you could do is pay someone to streamline the game to this blog? Anyone in Colorado, back to Hawai’i and then to this blog. In that sequence. Try? It’s not cable because I already have the necessary files and memory to do it on my home PC. Just try. That easy.

  45. ArcumFortis November 8, 2014 12:04 pm

Once upon a time, there was a warrior fan. And he enjoyed Saturday’s. There was anticipation of the game to come and the possibility of a big win, a win that would suggest that the team was turning the corner and that once again he could be a proud Warrior fan.

Then kickoff time would come. The first series would look good. “At last we have an offence” he would say. There would be some variation and creativity in play calling and we would even score. “At last” he would say. Then, after a series of false start penalties, there would be a switch to the power running game. Except it would seem that we did not have much power. Three and outs would start again. The fan would start to get a little edgy. Sometimes he would say unkind things about coach Chow. But the defence would still be looking stout so he would not give up hope. But even though the defence was stout there would be long passes; really really long passes completed against our CB’s. It would start to not look so good again. Sometimes more comments on coach Chow would emerge. Sometimes his wife would decide she was busy and didn’t want to watch football games with him. She seemed to think coach Chow was a nice man and her parents taught to say only nice things about people. So the fan would be alone.

Well, half time and we are still close. We still have a chance. But we would look a little flat the first series out. And our “power running” game would become an even more frequent “go to.” But we would seem to have even less power now. And then more really, really long pass completions given up by our defence. But it was still a little interesting to see if Scott Harding could place his punts on the opposing team’s goal line.

The fan would get more frustrated. The phone would ring and neighbors would ask him if he was ok and inquire as to who this “coach Chow” was that he was so angry at as the whole neighborhood would now know he was not happy with this man.

And then he would have the “ah hah” moment and pinch himself, sure now this was just a nasty recurrent bad dream. But all he got was a bruise from the pinch and the sad realization that this was not a dream.

Yes, yes, ground hog day, Lucy and Charlie and the eternal recurrence of life as a warrior fan. And yet 2 hrs before game time he still believes and hopes. Go figure.

Remember when our Offense was Thunder and Lightning. Now we are a Burp and a Fart!

yep, they smell like crap too!

  111. markazulu November 8, 2014 3:16 pm

i know we lost kirkwood, haynes, & stubblefield but i at least thought our WR play would be better than this.

  112. gobows November 8, 2014 3:19 pm

hawaii offensive line not showing much effort. joey gains 4 yds, fighting to move a pile, and 4 linemen just standing at the line of scrimmage watching the play.

chris need to open his eyes and get on these guys. or go find another job.

  113. Bryson November 8, 2014 3:19 pm

The problem with the receiving corp is that they all fit the same mold none of them have the speed to stretch the field and they don’t play physical enough off the line on short or medium routes…

  114. Shoko November 8, 2014 3:24 pm

    Woolsey 4-18 for 34 yards.

  115. ArcumFortis November 8, 2014 3:24 pm

I think we should develop a new policy for the team. If you want to be a wide receiver you have to be able to catch. The current policy wherein this is not a requirement doesn’t seem to be working well. I know it is nice not to be picky and give everybody a chance (especially the kids who don’t get picked very often) but in the end I don’t think this is working out.

  116. markazulu November 8, 2014 3:25 pm

defense gets a stop offense goes 3 and out 🙁

  117. Shoko November 8, 2014 3:26 pm

    Reilly? Prater? Ewaliko? Anyone? Anyone?

  118. ArcumFortis November 8, 2014 3:26 pm

We actually still have a chance in this game…..but we usually take care of that in the second half

  119. markazulu November 8, 2014 3:27 pm

Does UH still have the jugs machine.

  120. nutmegger November 8, 2014 3:28 pm

We sure could use a stop now.

  121. gobows November 8, 2014 3:32 pm

hawaii garans crack the top 10 next week

  122. Old Diver November 8, 2014 3:32 pm

You recruit receivers who can catch. You can refine a players skills but you can’t turn iron hands into soft hands.

  123. 808 November 8, 2014 3:32 pm

It’s beginning to feel like playing games within the MWC are becoming body bag games where UH is on the receiving end of a beating. UH is becoming less competitive with each passing year. Being close is still a loss. It means nothing.

If UH can recover 7 fumbles in the end zone along with a couple of field goals in the second half, then they may have a chance to win against CSU. Let’s add on several more fumble recovery for UH defense and then I think UH may pull off a win today.

  124. Shoko November 8, 2014 3:33 pm

Rams have a pretty good offensive line the past couple years.

  125. gobows November 8, 2014 3:34 pm

    markazulu November 8, 2014 at 3:27 pm
Does UH still have the jugs machine.

yeah, they use it to hang laundry. none of the players know what it is.

  126. 4-Prong November 8, 2014 3:35 pm

UH really is pathetic. if stephen tsai is correct and norm chow gets a fourth year, or runs out his contract, then we have at most, two more years of this crap. say it with me now, TWO MORE YEARS! TWO MORE YEARS! TWO MORE YEARS!

  127. Buffoman November 8, 2014 3:35 pm

Defense getting schooled. Folks just out of position.

  128. markazulu November 8, 2014 3:36 pm

You know it’s going bad when the only good plays for your team are punts. 🙁

  129. gobows November 8, 2014 3:36 pm

can we play wyoming every year, twice a year, home and home.

  130. turfwar November 8, 2014 3:36 pm

This defensive coordinator is not much better than the last guy.

  131. markazulu November 8, 2014 3:38 pm

in other news smu hasn’t won a game yet this season

  132. ArcumFortis November 8, 2014 3:39 pm

Looks like this team has given up. It’s sad. They can’t capatlize on their chances and can’t step up when needed to change the momentum. At least the offence is trying to open it up. But maybe we are learning the reason we don’t play a more open style offensive game is that we don’t have the ability to do it.

But hey, just think how good it will feel when the team finally starts winning and we can talk about these being the bad old days when we wanted to resign from being fans.

  133. Shoko November 8, 2014 3:40 pm

SMU ranked 128th in total defense and 127th in total offense out of 128 FBS schools. Those are the ingredients for an 0-12 season.

  134. 4-Prong November 8, 2014 3:41 pm

    bench woolsey. please.

  135. gobows November 8, 2014 3:41 pm

    Arcum…

don’t know if I will live that long. and I’m not an old futt.

  136. 4-Prong November 8, 2014 3:42 pm

    shoko: who cares about SMU?

  137. markazulu November 8, 2014 3:42 pm

Again why not have Ewaliko or Iosefa throw the reverse pass.

  138. gobows November 8, 2014 3:43 pm

lets go beau, lets go beau.

at least let the new guy get beaten up too. damn, throw in eric prater also.

  139. oneseason November 8, 2014 3:44 pm

It’s not like UH has been sentimental about football coaching personnel changes since hiring coach Chow …
Aaron Price, the offensive coordinator – dismissed
Thom Kaumeyer, the defensive coordinator – dismissed
Tony Tuioti, the linebacker coach – dismissed

  140. gobows November 8, 2014 3:47 pm

why does the offensive linemen watch joey try to move the pile? they should be moving the pile for him.

  141. Shoko November 8, 2014 3:48 pm

Let’s see who takes the snap in the second half.

  142. ArcumFortis November 8, 2014 3:49 pm

123….OD….yes of course….116 is a joke…..it’s a way of trying to ease the agony of warching this a game…..I don’t drink much but maybe best to start instead if my attempts at humor are distracting.

  143. DoubleB November 8, 2014 3:49 pm

Can we please get it over with and FIRE Norm Chow. I just won’t renew my season tickets otherwise.

  144. markazulu November 8, 2014 3:50 pm

    New Mexico 42
    Boise State 35
    HALFTIME

  145. 4-Prong November 8, 2014 3:50 pm

at this point, woolsey and the offense are so ineffective, you might as well put in beau just to get him game reps.

  146. Willie November 8, 2014 3:55 pm

I’m done cannot watch anymore of this same old, same old.

Real football being shown on channels 6 & 7 now. Saw so many really good games today; two meaningful upsets in the Big 12 and SEC were fun to see.

  147. Old Diver November 8, 2014 3:56 pm

    131

The offense coordinator is also no better than last year’s coordinator.

  148. Shoko November 8, 2014 3:56 pm

I don’t see how a one-loss Rams team can get into the Fiesta Bowl this season as some of been predicting. They haven’t played a ranked team at all this season.

  149. ArcumFortis November 8, 2014 3:57 pm

146…..I agree. At least it would create some reason to be interested in the second half. It’s strange you know. With all the talk about Woolsey’s ability to scramble/run he almost always gets caught from behind. He really doesn’t seem that fast.

  150. Old Diver November 8, 2014 4:00 pm

    143

Sorry, should have known it was a joke.

  151. Shoko November 8, 2014 4:01 pm

I think as far as dual-threat QB’s, Woolsey is have average speed. But if you have good blocking, even an average dual threat can gain some serious yardage.

  152. oneseason November 8, 2014 4:02 pm

One the path to 2 – 19 in conference play …
Players are not the root cause … but all we get is the “players need to step up”
Coaches identify and recruit promising players.
Players become better players through good coaching.
The coaching staff develops game plans that enable their players to utilize their skills.
The coaching staff is selected and hired by the head coach.
The head coach communicates resource needs to the Athletic Department and Boosters.

  153. 4-Prong November 8, 2014 4:02 pm

shoko: highest ranked league champion outside of the power-5 will receive an automatic berth into an “access bowl,” which i guess this year will be the fiesta. so they would have to win out and hope that boise state loses.

Their strength of schedule is actually stronger than marshall and the other non power-5 undefeateds, but their destiny is out of their hands right now. they need to hope that boise loses and the other non power-5 teams lose as well. or that they win out, boise loses, and the rankings look on their SOS and leapfrog them over marshall and the others.

  154. jonj November 8, 2014 4:03 pm

    131 turfwar

its not the D coordinator that’s bad its the offense! I said this last year and I will say it again. The D has zero confidence in the O! They’re deflated already and worn out! U could see it last season when we made 4th qt rallies the D started playing well and got turnovers for us. But this year chow doesn’t even throw the bombs in the 4th. Sad pathetic ball these days!

  155. st. anthony trojan November 8, 2014 4:03 pm

not to worry….. just wait till next week…..

    then wait till next year..
    then wait till 2016…

we doing fine… not to worry…
like ST sat..ikaka be fine.. at start of season..

coach chow be fine.. not to worry..
he will be here till 2016…

  156. Buffoman November 8, 2014 4:04 pm

#141 I was wondering the same thing. They look like the take a step or two then stop.

I’m watching the other old guy coach, Snyder, and he looks like he has his team running on all cylinders. Age is not an issue. Resources, philosophy and smart recruiting contribute to success.

    Isn’t Snyder older than Chow?

  157. nutmegger November 8, 2014 4:07 pm

    UH should play UConn.

  158. markazulu November 8, 2014 4:07 pm

Realistically the defense has played decent this season to at least give us 4-5 wins.
The offense has played bad enough to give us only 2 wins 🙁

  159. st. anthony trojan November 8, 2014 4:08 pm

nutmegger the u conn basketball tean ?

  160. ArcumFortis November 8, 2014 4:11 pm

    160…yes…the womens’ team

  161. markazulu November 8, 2014 4:13 pm

It’s gonna be exciting hearing Norm Chow on inside access
“You just can’t do that against good football teams”
“It’s not about us coaches its about the players”
    “these young guys are resilient”

  162. markazulu November 8, 2014 4:14 pm

Hawai’i receives the 2nd half kickoff
Colorado state scores 3 plays in 🙁

  163. azwarrior22 November 8, 2014 4:14 pm

This is embarrassing. Maybe a blow out will hasten the inevitable.

  164. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 8, 2014 4:15 pm

    Nothing so far that I didn’t expect…

    =)

  165. 808 November 8, 2014 4:15 pm

If UH play Wyoming every year, Wyoming will eventually make adjustments to their team strategy and how they play UH. In the end, Wyoming will get a win.

UH is showcasing on national TV how it plays football every week. I wonder if their verbal commits are still interested in UH.

6-28 and counting in season 3. Way to go Coach. I thought when he said we are going to chase championships he meant MWC. It seems after this game UH is sure to break the bottom 10. Hopefully by the end of the year UH can win that #1 ranking. It’s going to be tough because it looks like SMU has that title wrapped up.

  166. markazulu November 8, 2014 4:17 pm

I would say the last 3 games the defense especially the secondary has made teams look like National championship contenders.

  167. 4-Prong November 8, 2014 4:18 pm

lol woolsey’s best and longest completion was off an underthrown (a.k.a. bad) pass.

  168. azwarrior22 November 8, 2014 4:20 pm

I’ve lost faith. Change is needed NOW. Don’t wait until the end of the season what you can do NOW. This is a train wreck that is on the wrong side of the tracks.

  169. markazulu November 8, 2014 4:21 pm

Lakalaka imo has been the biggest bright spot for me this season.

  170. Old Diver November 8, 2014 4:21 pm

How does a coach who is a perennial member of the Coaches on the Hot Seat Club with two years left on his contract recruit?

  171. azwarrior22 November 8, 2014 4:21 pm

    Let’s go for another FG.

  172. markazulu November 8, 2014 4:22 pm

Hawaii probably leads the nation in 3rd and long 🙁

  173. Shoko November 8, 2014 4:24 pm

That was a spectacular Iosefa acrobatic TD.

  174. Shoko November 8, 2014 4:27 pm

Haha, Warrior score a TD and no fanfare on the blog. Tough times, indeed.

  175. markazulu November 8, 2014 4:27 pm

@olddriver he probably tells them and not necessarily in this order Steve young, Phillip rivers, Jim Mcmahon, Carson Palmer, heisman trophy, USC, BYU, NFL, National Title, look at my rings, Ty detmer, Reggie Bush, Paradise, Barack Obama

  176. Old Diver November 8, 2014 4:31 pm

    176

    You forgot Gib.

  177. Inyoface November 8, 2014 4:31 pm

    Wow, defense sucks.

  178. 4-Prong November 8, 2014 4:32 pm

shoko: look at the scoreboard, buddy. it’s now 41-15. i feel like you can probably forgive people here if they’re not breaking out the party hats for a UH td.

  179. Inyoface November 8, 2014 4:32 pm

    DB’s always getting burned.

  180. Buffoman November 8, 2014 4:34 pm

We score one but cannot stop the opponent from scoring. Tough.

Let’s see if the scoring drive was a fluke.

  181. markazulu November 8, 2014 4:36 pm

In all quarters Colorado state has scored 14 points.

  182. Shoko November 8, 2014 4:37 pm

    179. Usually, though, there would be at least a few people that would express a little excitement when the team scores. Not anymore. Again, tough times.

  183. 808 November 8, 2014 4:38 pm

Usually when a business closes it’s doors, they have a close out sale. They liquidate all their assets to payoff debt.

If UH football was an actual business where the bottom line was important, this is how some of their assets would sell for:

    1. Footballs – sold at a discounted price. Money pay some bills.
    2. Equipment – sold at market value. Will be able to pay some debt with that revenue.
    3. Uniforms – sold off at auction to pay off more debt.
    4. UH practice field – create an agriculture farm suitable to bring in revenue to the school.
    5. UH offensive playbook – give playbook to the next school looking to get rid of their football program. It worked for UH. Maybe it can work for some other looking to get rid of football.

Disclaimer: This is only fiction and not true. Football is here to stay. We have 2 more years of seeing Norm Chow Offense.

  184. kwika49 November 8, 2014 4:38 pm

There went another $110. I coulda give Nakoa 5K so far.

  185. 4-Prong November 8, 2014 4:40 pm

shoko: well. if what stephen tsai says is true, then we have two more years of this. say it with me now: TWO MORE YEARS! TWO MORE YEARS!

  186. azwarrior22 November 8, 2014 4:40 pm

It’s embarrassing when the commentators say that Hawaii just throws it up and hopes for a prayer and our best play is a punt 🙁

  187. Old Diver November 8, 2014 4:41 pm

Gotta remember, UH has equal opportunities on offense as CSU. The defensive woes can be largely attributed to an inept offense.

  188. Inyoface November 8, 2014 4:42 pm

We still get chance! I tink!

  189. 4-Prong November 8, 2014 4:42 pm

lol norm chow. offense has some kind of success moving the ball through the air, mainly be drawing PI fouls. instead, lets hand off the ball up the middle and put the struggling quarterback in a third and long situation.

  190. Shoko November 8, 2014 4:44 pm

TD! Can a get a woot?

  191. markazulu November 8, 2014 4:45 pm

    Woot woot!

  192. Buffoman November 8, 2014 4:45 pm

Scored. Okay, any chance of a defensive stop?

  193. 4-Prong November 8, 2014 4:45 pm

announcers are right on one thing: scott harding is an animal. the future looks bleak without him next season.

well, the future looks bleak anyway, but goddam, scott harding is fun to watch. i could watch him punt the ball all day.

in fact, UH should try that for a game before the season is over: don’t run any plays. just have scott harding punt the entire game. i bet you attendance will surge in the stadium.

  194. markazulu November 8, 2014 4:46 pm

If our offense keeps it up and our defense can stop them we get chance 😛

  195. Shoko November 8, 2014 4:47 pm

Thanks for the woot! Now if I could get a woot from 4-prong. 😉

  196. ArcumFortis November 8, 2014 4:48 pm

190 Shoko. Well, I think this is our best offensive output on the road this season. Does that qualify as a woot?

  197. markazulu November 8, 2014 4:48 pm

@shoko you could probably get a woot if chow got fired lol

  198. ArcumFortis November 8, 2014 4:49 pm

    Yeah common 4 P….give a woot

  199. obachan November 8, 2014 4:49 pm

you can watch the live streaming of the game here but don’t download any software which is pesky malware to get rid of:

  200. 4-Prong November 8, 2014 4:50 pm

    shoko: woot.

  201. Shoko November 8, 2014 4:50 pm

Probably get multiple woots if it was announced Chow was released.

  202. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 8, 2014 4:52 pm

Remember when we used to have a defense? Wasn’t that long ago…

  203. Shoko November 8, 2014 4:53 pm

Dee Hart should go pro after this season. He already has his degree in criminal justice, I think.

  204. Buffoman November 8, 2014 4:56 pm

Wow, No stopping the opponent. Getting manhandled, no answers.

  205. Shoko November 8, 2014 4:56 pm

The Rams have run 50 plays and put up 463 yards and the Warriors have run 68 plays and put up 274 yards.

    Losely

  210. 4-Prong November 8, 2014 5:05 pm

    oh lawd. woolsey is awful.

  211. Shoko November 8, 2014 5:05 pm

    Terrible decision by Woolsey.

  212. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 8, 2014 5:05 pm

Moleni wiiiiiiide open in the flat for a 1st down and he throws into double coverage.

    So Awesome!!! ^_^

  213. ArcumFortis November 8, 2014 5:06 pm

    Dang interception……woot?

  214. Inyoface November 8, 2014 5:07 pm

Not a dual-threat, more like a zero threat.

  215. markazulu November 8, 2014 5:07 pm

    Woot 🙁

  216. oneseason November 8, 2014 5:08 pm

I like the CSU approach of building a winning team first, then looking at building a new/updated stadium.

  217. Inyoface November 8, 2014 5:09 pm

Will there be a Beau sighting?

  218. Shoko November 8, 2014 5:12 pm

On the bright side, I’m sure Stephen won’t have a problem beating his deadline. At this point, it’s just a matter of filling in the stat numbers. I think we can pretty much guess what the headlines will be tomorrow

  219. JustAsking November 8, 2014 5:13 pm

Good news: our defense forced CSU to change quarterbacks!

  220. markazulu November 8, 2014 5:14 pm

its like uh is doing the opposite lol

  221. Shoko November 8, 2014 5:14 pm

McElwain’s contract states at least a 7.5 million buyout for other schools that are willing to hire him after this season.

  222. ArcumFortis November 8, 2014 5:15 pm

218…. Good point…..Stephen should just be able to recycle the same piece week after week….same headline, same content.

  223. obachan November 8, 2014 5:15 pm

At this late point in the season Chow should live with his decision to stick with Woolsey; otherwise he will waste Beau’s redshirt year. Better to start over next year. If he does play Beau I would question Chow’s judgment more than I already do.

  224. Inyoface November 8, 2014 5:15 pm

    FG no good! Chee!

  225. ArcumFortis November 8, 2014 5:16 pm

221….is that dollars or malasadas?…..maybe we get chance.

  226. 4-Prong November 8, 2014 5:17 pm

it would be nice to see beau riley play. might as well. granted, he’ll probably be terrible becuase of lack of reps. but why not? empty the benches and get some game experience for the other guys? no use risking injuries for the starters.

  227. mytake November 8, 2014 5:18 pm

    There playing uninspired football.

  228. JustAsking November 8, 2014 5:19 pm

It is working. CSU’s offense looks tired!!! We got ‘me where we want them!

  229. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 8, 2014 5:20 pm

At this point just save Beau’s red shirt. Chow thought he had all of us fooled saying Beau would play when I reality that was never going to happen. #believewhatyousee

  230. 4-Prong November 8, 2014 5:20 pm

isn’t beau riley no longer redshirted? so whether or not he steps foot on the field, he already burned that year.

ben jay is an absolute idiot for making those “very real possibility that football will go away” comments.

    absolute idiot.

  231. ArcumFortis November 8, 2014 5:20 pm

Great recruiting advertising now with quotes of Ben Jay saying the football program might be gone and our facilities suck….what next?

  232. JustAsking November 8, 2014 5:21 pm

And now the Ben Jay comments get posted, again, on national TV.

  233. markazulu November 8, 2014 5:22 pm

@4 prong i believe Riley still is considered a red shirt unless he plays in a game.

  234. ArcumFortis November 8, 2014 5:23 pm

I nominate Ben Jay for the Herman Frazier Memorial Award for biggest knuckled.

  235. ArcumFortis November 8, 2014 5:24 pm

    That’s knucklehead…..but who cares

  236. markazulu November 8, 2014 5:24 pm

We hear about the football budget how do the other sports do??

  237. ArcumFortis November 8, 2014 5:25 pm

As long as Ben gets the award…..I understand it comes with a free one way ticket to anywhere outside the Hawaiian Islands

  238. mytake November 8, 2014 5:25 pm

    Pathetic

  239. Shoko November 8, 2014 5:25 pm

Rams running out the clock with the ground game and we’re still struggling to stop the run.

  240. markazulu November 8, 2014 5:27 pm

Can i get a woot when this game is over 🙁

  241. mytake November 8, 2014 5:28 pm

Ben is a ball licker so don’t expect ground breaking decisions

  242. ArcumFortis November 8, 2014 5:29 pm

    241…is that football or basketball?

  243. Tempmanoa November 8, 2014 5:29 pm

Why do we lose? We will never win anything as long as we have the worst offense in the MWC– every team averages more points per game than we ever score– only team like us is UNLV which has one only one game so far. We went from one of the best offenses with Rolo one of the worst in the MWC and nationally very year since Chow was hired.

  244. Shoko November 8, 2014 5:30 pm

Defense is gassed. It’s a long night and a longer flight back home for the team..

  245. Buffoman November 8, 2014 5:30 pm

#16 tackles like our receivers catch. These guys do not appear to practice fundamentals, like catching and wrapping up.

  246. ArcumFortis November 8, 2014 5:31 pm

The good thing about these announcers is they really know coaching. They opine that Norm is exactly what we need right now…..I guess so if you enjoy depression.

  247. obachan November 8, 2014 5:31 pm

Once Beau takes a snap in a game he loses his redshirt. Hope Ikaika stays healthy and doesn’t need to come out of the game – even for one play.

  248. ArcumFortis November 8, 2014 5:33 pm

Gotta feel for Ikaika……he actually has played decently…..but our receivers are just …well you know

  249. markazulu November 8, 2014 5:34 pm

    Woolsey right now 13-42
at least 6 or 7 were drops

  250. ArcumFortis November 8, 2014 5:34 pm

    Woot….woot!

  251. papajoe2 November 8, 2014 5:35 pm

It his quest to find the “proto type” of player, I was impressed at the size of the recievers he recruited. No Chad Owens, Kealoha Pilares type of players. Unfortunetly, they don’t have the breakaway speed, don’t play hard if their number is not called, and they can’t catch. IMO

  252. 4-Prong November 8, 2014 5:36 pm

woolsey wasn’t very good. regardless of the drops. although his receivers also suck. the entire offense is still a train wreck.

  253. Shoko November 8, 2014 5:37 pm

Woot, woot and one more for good luck: WOOT!

  254. markazulu November 8, 2014 5:37 pm

@4 prong agreed the offense at times to predictable other times they just fail to execute properly.

  255. Shoko November 8, 2014 5:38 pm

And now, on to the Utah – Oregon game.

  256. markazulu November 8, 2014 5:40 pm

TCU dominating Kansas State right now 41-14

  257. Buffoman November 8, 2014 5:50 pm

Our receivers are woeful. Slow, poor route runners and drop way too many passes.
We need a receivers coach who can teach fundamentals. We also need more speed.

  258. obachan November 8, 2014 5:55 pm

at least the Oregon vs Utah game is much more entertaining – probably just witnessed the most bizarre TD by Oregon in my life

  259. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 8, 2014 5:57 pm

Btw, can we give Mike From Waimanalo some kind of award? I look forward to hearing him after every game.

  260. Inyoface November 8, 2014 6:02 pm

Crazy 99 yard fumble return for Oregon.

  261. Irock November 8, 2014 6:02 pm

We may not have the best team or the best athletes. But, each one chose to play for Hawaii and that makes each one the BEST in my eyes. Keep up the fight! Don’t give up! And keep trying to get better! There are many out here cheering you on!!!

  262. Inyoface November 8, 2014 6:03 pm

Oh wait got called back I think.

  263. Inyoface November 8, 2014 6:05 pm

I wonder if Chow wants Ikaika to struggle so no starting qb controversy next year?

  264. Inyoface November 8, 2014 6:07 pm

Mariota TD pass on 4th down.

  265. 808WarriorFan November 8, 2014 6:09 pm

What really scares me is that those “power brokers behind the scenes” mentioned in Ferd Lewis’ column a few days ago (Interim Chancellor Robert Vroman), Atty Bert Kobayashi (whose son Jon was mentioned as a possible “future” UH AD…go figure, Atty / Board of Regent Jeff Portnoy, and CEO of the Clarence Ching Foundation John “Jack” Tsui) will allow Norm to keep his job.

This is OUR TEAM; NOT THEIRS, meaning those “power brokers”. I agree w/ “Tom -Warrior Nation” who said a few days ago in an ST blog that if 37,500 fans donate $20 each we’d have enough money to buy Norm out. “Tom-Warrior Nation” said he’d donate $200. I’ll put my money where my mouth is and match that offer. LET’S TAKE OUR TEAM BACK, GIVE IT BACK TO THE FANS, AND TO HELL W/ THOSE “POWER BROKERS” WHO DON’T CARE…..FIRE NORM CHOW…..

  266. 4-Prong November 8, 2014 6:14 pm

say it with me, everybody! TWO MORE YEARS! TWO MORE YEARS!

  267. Buffoman November 8, 2014 6:14 pm

#266. It would be somewhat unprecedented if there would be 37k plus who would donate to oust a coach. I believe such a feat would make national news.

  268. Andrew November 8, 2014 6:15 pm

Poor Gary haha doing fan phones is brutal

  269. Big J November 8, 2014 6:15 pm

Hey 808WarriorFan- I’m down with that! Norm must go and I will put my money where my mouth is. We know why he was never given a head coaching job after forty years of success in the business. The game has sadly passed him by- has anyone seen him ranting at the refs during the game- he looks crazy! Time to move on and put Norm out to pasture. “Offensive Guru” my a$%.

  270. 4-Prong November 8, 2014 6:27 pm

#268: lol yes. it’ll definitely be on espn. someone please start this on kickstarter. i’ll donate too. for the giggles.

  271. islandman November 8, 2014 6:39 pm

If you wait one more year, the buyout is $200,000. But looks like can’t wait.

  272. Wes'side Warrior November 8, 2014 6:57 pm

Listening to the phone call-ins on the radio…
Gary talks about how Beau Reilly is probably not ready and up to speed for blah blah blah reason. Funny… didn’t we just get torched by a True Freshman QB recently? He sure looked All-Conference. I mean, if not up to speed, then devise a game plan to fit him like Utah State did.

Another caller said, remember Coach Chow said he doesn’t recruit Freshmen to Red-Shirt them. Hmmm…

Anyways, hope our injuries aren’t too bad. Heal up, Warriors! Still gotta finish out this season. Finish Strong!

  273. Old Diver November 8, 2014 7:56 pm

My take is Beau is not physically or mentally ready to play. There is not one QB recruited by Chow who is physically or mentally ready to play. This after three recruiting classes. Chow’s downfall is his poor recruiting.

  274. 808 November 8, 2014 8:05 pm

The power brokers in charge at UH will wait and allow Norm Chow to finish his contract and then hire who they want for the next UH HC.

For the power brokers in charge at UH winning is secondary. They know they can call the shots so they do. All that’s going to happen is BJ is going to be replaced by another fall guy willing to go with the flow. I don’t blame BJ. These power brokers will get what they want.

If Chow stays at UH and finishes out his contract, I don’t believe the football team gets past 10 wins for the 5 year period of Chow’s era.

UH should just go cheap. Hire a local high school coach willing to make about 90K a year to coach the team. Pay all the assistants the same amount of money and then watch UH’s losing streak on the road and on national tv reach levels that no team will break. 30 years of consecutive road losing games and 30 years of losses on national tv would have UH hold a record that no team will break.

If attendance continues to be around 20K, their rationale will be why change we’re doing ok. But, if one day 150 people go through the turnstiles, maybe that would be the shock that tell these powe brokers we need to do something. Or, the power brokers plan is forming and going as planned. Have athletics be reduced to intramural sports.

Norm Chow is correct the players are resilient. They have to be resilient to keep moving forward and knowing that they not going to be chasing championships during their stay at UH. But, at least they are resilient.

To the power brokers at UH, congratulations, your finger prints on UH football and athletics will be felt for many years.

  275. Inyoface November 8, 2014 8:42 pm

    Hey guys, did we win?

  276. lawaia November 8, 2014 9:08 pm

Comment #272 submitted by 4-prong is uncalled for. Calling for the firing of Coach Chow and his abilities to coach the University of Hawaii football team, is fine. But, when you ask someone to commit suicide is No Class.

  277. Willie November 8, 2014 9:09 pm

Woosley throws for less than 200 yards, 34 percent completion and TD pass exceeded by 2 interceptions. He’s supposed to present the best opportunity to win. Record indicates this thought process by the HC is flawed. Every week his QB rating is at the lower levels of all FBS teams.

I guess Woosley is the only option going forward? Chow knows something not apparent to the eye or brain? Only 3 games left and now what?

  278. SC November 8, 2014 9:12 pm

At this rate, UH will be exiting the montain west not by choice.

  279. BigWave96744 November 8, 2014 9:12 pm

I say the UNLV game draws the lowest turnstile count since Aloha Stadium opened.
They should close the upper Yellow level to save money and allow people to sit anywhere that open. HHSAA playoff double headers will draw more fans.

I thought the USU game was bad 🙁

  280. SC November 8, 2014 9:14 pm

    Oops. Mountain West.

  281. BigWave96744 November 8, 2014 9:14 pm

At kickoff, the yellow north end zone section had less than 5 people total

  282. BigWave96744 November 8, 2014 9:16 pm

Good thing we played Northern Iowa early.
    They looked pretty good today

  283. BigWave96744 November 8, 2014 9:19 pm

Why use Pedroza on that failed trick pass to Woolsey when they could have used the former QB from Baldwin.

BTW, why the heck isn’t Ewaliko used more at receiver.
He’s faster and has better hands than 3 of the starting 4….

  284. 4-Prong November 8, 2014 9:24 pm

#277: looks like someone can’t take a joke and is taking things a little TOO literally. calm yourself, lawaia. it’s just the internet.

  285. 808 November 8, 2014 9:28 pm

SC, UH is safe in the MWC. You see when UH agreed to join the MWC, they also agreed to pay for all travel cost of all MWC football teams to play in Hawaii. That means each MWC team that comes to Hawaii receives about $175,000 from UH to cover their transportation to Hawaii. They get a free trip to Hawaii and at the same time kick the living cap out of our football team. What conference would walk away from that arrangement?

  286. SC November 8, 2014 9:29 pm

I noticed people are frustrated on this blog. So am I. However, UH football will not be any different this year. So, might as well relax and look at UH football as a comedy.

  287. 808 November 8, 2014 9:30 pm

    Correction: …kick the living crap…

  288. SC November 8, 2014 9:34 pm

    808. It’s a speculation. This is not life and death. Take it as a joke like UH football.

  289. Buffoman November 8, 2014 9:37 pm

#278 his numbers were made to look worse by the fact that our receivers dropped a lot of balls. Many were drive stoppers.

He still holds the ball too long, stairs down his first option and is tentative.

  290. inyoface November 8, 2014 9:37 pm

What happen to da run n shoot cuss.

  291. 4-Prong November 8, 2014 9:54 pm

the saddest part is that colorado state was playing man press with a single high safety. if this was during the mcmackin or june jones year, and you were stupid enough to play man press with a single high safety, it would’ve been raining touchdowns. but now, UH football is a national punchline, and then you have people like lawaia thinking i ACTUALLY want norm chow to commit ritual suicide after the season is over.

  292. 808 November 8, 2014 10:08 pm

For UH’s WR, maybe they can take a page out of the show The Replacements. Keanu Reeves stars as Shane Falco who throws to his receiver Clifford Franklin. However, Franklin can’t seem to catch balls thrown his way. So their coach uses some form of sticky glue to help Franklin catch passes.

That may help UH WR’s. It would probably increase Woolsey’s completion percentage a little. Of course, that won’t help Woolsey and his interceptions.

Maybe UH is trying to mix comedy and athletics together. That may work better for the entertainment value when watching UH football.

  293. JustAsking November 8, 2014 10:09 pm

#277: your comment is too funny! If you can’t see the humor in 4-Prong’s suggestion of an ancient ritual suicide, you need to take some happy pills.

  294. Z November 8, 2014 10:23 pm

Coach is playing whoever gives them the best chance to win so whoever is left must be………..I guess we just need to recruit better.

  295. kev-1 November 8, 2014 11:02 pm

My take from today’s game …

Joey Iosefa came back fat and slow. Lakalaka is the better RB, but now is injured.

Our receivers are horrendous. I’m not sure what’s worse, the drops or the mere fact that they simply cannot get open.

Can’t blame it on run only play calling this game. But get plenty blame to go around anyway.

  296. kev-1 November 8, 2014 11:04 pm

I have no money, but I will volunteer my time and labor to help clean out Chow’s office. I’ll also make myself available to clean out Ben Jay’s office too.

  297. 3-Prong November 8, 2014 11:12 pm

ST: Some of the comments today cannot be defined as “civil and in good taste”. Personal attacks with name calling should be banned. Certain individuals on this blog speak as if the were D1 all conference players or former head coachers. I feel sorry for these people.
