Glimpse into the future
The Warriors conducted the Scout Bowl yesterday, a 34-play, full-contact scrimmage that involved redshirts and developing players. These three were among the standouts:
> Ryan Tuiasoa: Maybe inspired by the return of Joey Iosefa, maybe inspired by teammates chanting his name, but Tuiasoa displayed quickness and power in rushing three times for 30 yards. The 2013 Punahou graduate transferred after a year at Weber State. He said he is living his dream playing for the Warriors, a goal fostered playing catch with his father. “That’s the base of every football player’s game,” he said, “playing in the backyard for fun.”
> Darrian Josey: The Warriors have spent a lot of time and money in search of speed. In other words, they spent a lot of time and money recruiting in Florida. Josey is one of the reasons. The 5-11 wideout was 145 pounds when he first arrived in Hawaii in July. Under strength/conditioning coach Gary Beemer, Josey is now 168. He showed his sub-4.5 speed when he raced past a cornerback for a 60-yard scoring catch.
> Max Wittek: The former USC quarterback was the one who threw the 60-yarder to Josey. Wittek has been terrific — wait, did the blog host just make a rhyme? — as the scout quarterback during this redshirt year. He was 3-of-6 for 83 yards yesterday. Two of his passes were dropped. He has a strong arm, as well as touch on his passes. It looks like there will be a quarterback competition in the spring.

Boola: I guess this just shows what happens when schools forget that they’re schools, not just life support for football and basketball teams.
4-prong. Yes, I view this in a rather critical light, as long after the locker-room lights have been turned off, the library light will remain on ( almost poetic eh??).
But, much like the parent who may have an inkling that their son/daughter may be drinking or smoking weed, to turn a benign head, and hope nothing will happen, will not suffice. It is only after tragedy or a seminal event occurs, when we realize that we should have been more assertive, more proactive, and have the courage to have tough conversations. I will say this, this events do not entirely occur in a vacuum. Now, that is not to say, the President condoned or was cognizant, but rather whole departments have to be involved to make such a sway, through these many years of complicity.
Sort of sad for the entire academic community….
oh yeah, definitely. if it’s been going on for 20 years, including publishing fake classes in the course catalog, with approval by department heads and professors who are putting their names on the syllabus as actually “teaching” these courses, then possibly the entire university structure is going to be implicated, from the professors all the way up to the dean and the president.
if accreditation bodies are involved now, the consequences for UNC will go beyond just reduction in athlete scholarships, post-season bans, and vacated wins. This could affect the entire student body, not just the 1% or whatever that are athletes.
depending on the results of the investigation, heads will roll up at chapel hill. and not just coaches and ADs.
Oh, minor side note, one of my few claims to fame, well not fame, maybe one manini asterick, is I had a pick in a scout bowl once.
Won’t matter if we still have the same bad coaching / leadership / play calling …..

I feel for the legitimate student athlete at UNC. Good example of a few bringing down a once proud program. Then again, not sure how long this fiasco has been going on. If we had the UH admin. there, the whole athletic dept. would be fired before the NCAA release results, yeah?
Interesting day, yesterday. Now time to see if what they say they will do, gets done.

Def think Chow banking on Wittek was for good reason, but too bad he didn’t make it in for this season. Now did that cost Chow’s job??? GO BOWS!!!
Bigger possibility is that if Wittek had graduated he would probably have ended up at Texas. They are having QB problems too.
me would not place to much ‘assurances’ on the scout team 4 next year…not know who will be around…
there is so many that ‘come n go’ even coaches…n no matter how promising..we all have to keep in mind..that injuries will always play a very big part of what will be coming back…hopefully not so… but it does happen…we could be down to 4th string in many positions by opening day next year…
the new coach…will have his hands full evaluating the talent…hopefully with a big sprinkling of sum jc transfers n a good freshman class of recruits…
me thinks that scout team scrimmage is just a waste of time with this coach…like the last scrimmage…dudes that make plays n ‘shine’ are still relegated to ride the timbers n if used…only for spot duty under this coach…speed kills… so they are sitting n watching the ‘procession’ go bye bye… sj…ewaliko..n now this dude…what a waste…problem is ..we never score enough points to get ahead to use them…n see what they really can do…but good luck to them next year..if they are still around..
boola. My friends are always accusing me of remembering things that never happened. But I do recall being at that particular scout bowl. So you were the one who picked off Vince Acohido’s swing pass to Richard Higa. I also remember coach Tomey scolding Acohido…”how many times do I have tell you guys to be careful when you throw to boola’s half of the field.” I remember it like it was yesterday.

Did that cost Chow his job, God I hope so.
I sure hope there’ll be a qb contest in the spring summer and fall. Or maybe it won’t be a contest and we already know the answer.
I hope Zwahlen is as talented as he’s hyped up to be. The competition between him and Wittek should be a good one.

Not that this matters at all, but Utah St WR Gregory “Hayden” Weichers has been suspended indefinitely.
Apparently he was busted for soliciting a prostitute back on October 22. He still played Oct 25 vs UNLV and Nov. 1 vs UH.
#27 #28 If Chow keeps his job, his MO has been to anoint the starter early so Wittek will be handed the keys. I do hope Zwahlen can compete early, giving us some decent depth at QB: Wittek, Zwahlen, Woolsley, Reilly, Prater… GO BOWS!!!
I hope that some of the assistants will be retained when the inevitable happens.
Namely Beamer, Naeole, and Gouveia. These are the three areas that have seen the most improvement since they have been hired.
I like Powell also because he’s done a good job with the players on the transition to a 3-4 base. The DLine has done much better than I expected, however, they lose some key pieces after this season (Yap, Samia and Malepeai).
I know I’ve been bashing Chow of recent….please prove me (us) wrong Chow and Company. Lets start with an unexpected well deserved road game win in Colorado this coming weekend. Go Bows-I no believe anymore but still want to

I believe Coach Chow and his staff are incredibly hard workers trying to do things the right way. There work may not be reflected in the Wins & Losses, but in the team’s character. The players (team) never QUITS and work very hard all week long…yes, many mental errors from those who are stepping in to fill in for the injured, but the character is a reflection of the coaching!
I give this team and coaching staff a lot of credit! Its hard to stay up, fight and not quit when it seems things aren’t going your way and there are fractures occuring within the athletic department and upper campus that are beyond your control! In addition, the you’re losing support from the fans and administration who expect your coach to WIN, but don’t help with recruiting by leaving the program in uncertainty, instead of supporting the coach that they selected!
How do you expect a Coach to recruit when you allow rumors to grow about the firing the Coach? How can you WIN without good recruits? If you feel the Coach is leading the program in the right direction…come out and show stability, which is what recruits will look for in a program!
When you get married (get into a relationship) as UH is with Coach Chow or any other Coach that they selected; you selected this person because you knew what they were about and believed them. Don’t quit when its bad or sick, but fight with them and the rewards with be bountiful!

I think you are correct that our current losing situation is not a result of lack of effort on the part of the coaching staff and players. Seems to me that this group works as hard as any we have had. I am not a poker player but the poker principle of “know when to hold em and know when to fold em” applies here. Personally I say “fold em” (with regard to the coaching staff) but I say that from a safe distance where it is easy to feel smarter than those making the decisions. It would be best if the program turned around and the current staff were successful. But I for one have quit believing that is going to happen. “It” just doesn’t seem to work whatever the complexity of the “it” is.

What comes first and Chicken or the Egg? I say the Chicken because I don’t expect any miracles to create an Egg without a Chicken. That said, I believe the Chicken is the fans who need to show they believe and by showing I mean showing up and not quiting just like what we ask from the players and the team!
We, the fans, can only control what we do…as hard as that may be at times like these when we’re upset and frustrated! But what recruit wants to play for a program with NO SUPPORT (i.e. fans in the stands) versus another program. At least that would be one problem UH won’t have to fix and will help generate more revenue to create better facilities and entice more recruits. Not to mention provide the athletic program with the much needed stability it needs!
So I ask you…What comes first the Chicken or the Egg?
But we, the fans, didn’t choose this coach or any other coach for that matter. The Athletic Director does through a search committee that makes a recommendation. Neither can we, the fans, fire any coach. If the team does poorly, its not the fans’ fault. We don’t carry or pass the ball. We don’t call a single play in a game. We simply open our pocketbooks to purchase tickets; go to games; cheer for good play; moan for poor play. We buy and wear UH t-shirts and hats. We announce to the world we are Rainbow Warrior fans. And we want a winning program. Twenty-thousand fans show up as our end of the deal. The current program/staff is not delivering on their end of the deal. So we are asking for a change after three years of the same.

I understand that where you’re coming from…you’re looking at the Wins & Losses. I ask that you look deeper…the character, the fight, the attitude! Nothing done right happens overnight.
We’ve witnessed a lot of things that is not normal, but happened because it was a once in a lifetime occurrence, which we will likely not see again (i.e. the housing boom, June Jones turn around…etc.).
In REALITY, things take time and you have to look at the CORE, the FOUNDATION, and have vision of the FUTURE. Changing Foundations only sets you back and initially causes more unstable ground.
I never believed a successful Division I Football Program could be properly built in 3 years…especially with people calling for your job in 2! How can a Head Coach recruit for the future if people are saying there is no future? We ALL know you need good recruits (players) to Win. How does he do this when he’s put behind the eight ball?
#49 Just as an FYI, I never miss a game. But it has become an increasingly painful experience. I think my pain tolerance might be higher than some because the stadium is pretty empty these days. I feel for the players and the coaches. It’s even hard for me to accept this team is not going to turn it around. But at some point one has to accept the reality of the situation and leave the chickens and eggs to the farmers.

I believe Ikaika Woosley played one of his better games this past week. He was under duress all night and stood tall and stepped up in the pocket. He even took off and ran at appropriate times. Still needs work, but a lot of improvement in my opinion, yet people with tunnel vision were still calling for the Freshman to come in???
One Season – very funny…I’m not sure how long, but a Head Coach needs 100% SUPPORT for how ever many years that is.
ArcumFortis – It pains me too…to no end!!! But without HOPE is death and as long as I have breath, I have HOPE!!!
@arcumfortis I agree it’s getting tougher an tougher to watch. I’ll keep cheering on but it’s getting harder an harder to stay optimistic. I hope to see improvement but that hope has been their since Chow started here..

Colorado State is a good example of how a team can be turned around with a coaching change in almost no time. In 2009-2011 they had three consecutive 3 win seasons– that is as bad as Chow. Today, Colorado State is experiencing sellouts at their stadium. When we hired Chow, CSU hired a head coach who was the offensive coordinator at Alabama during two national championships. In his first year, MCelwein had only 4 wins (including a blowout over us in a battle of first year coaches). In his second year, CSU was bowl eligible, this year CSU is 8-1 and a contender for the MWC championship.
